First of all, Happy Labor Day! Do people say ‘Happy Labor Day’? Anywho, I do not believe I have posted on here about the studio space I am opening here in Tallahassee, so I will take the opportunity to do that now.
Since the minute I moved back to Tallahassee (even before that, but for the sake of this story, I will start there) this May I had been looking for a space to use as a studio. I saw some cheap places that doubled as an apartment, an open space connected to one of my favorite tattoo shops, an open space connected to my favorite bar of all time, an old bike shop, an old factory, and so on. One day while I was just hanging out with the child, I went to hang with my old roommate/best friend as he was getting tattooed by our buddy and I found out the space the shop was in had some vacancies, so I began looking into the available units and found one that I fell in love with immediately. After 3 weeks of phone tag, vacations, sickness, travel days on other peoples parts, everything is now official. 'Matt Burke Photo’ is now a legal company with the state of Florida and the IRS, I have an insurance policy on my studio, budgets, business plans, design plans, Grand Opening Party plans, etc etc. Everything isofficialand it scares the crap out of me haha.
If this studio fails, it is my fault. No one to blame, no 'boss that’s out to get me’, no calling in sick. On the other hand, when this studio succeeds, it is all on me. Either way, this is the craziest thing I have ever done, second only to becoming a father. I am putting every single cent that I have to my name, all of my furniture, all of my belongings, and everything that I own on the line to start this studio. I am getting loans that require a collateral to be put up, so I am putting my personal belongings on the line. Camera, gear, car, electronics, etc. All of it: at risk of being handed over if I screw this all up. haha. wow. That’s a lot different to see written out than to just be thinking it.
Anywho, today is my last free day before I get the keys in hand tomorrow and begin the remodel, design, and build of the studio in hopes of opening on the 10th anniversary of me moving down to Florida. 25 days to completely build a photo studio… with no knowledge of building anything. haha.
And on that note, I have some stuff to get handled before I Go take some photos of some people that I hope to hear on the Radio someday.
Enjoy your labor day, tumblr, if anyone has earned it, it’s you guys.
Stay classy, Tallahassee.
