Tuesday Tips - Gesture Drawing

As a story artist, I feel like one of the most important technical skill to develop is the ability to draw things things clearly and fast. Practicing gesture drawing is, in my opinion, a good way to get better at it. I think it’s fun, too! Of course, you can draw from life and find unique things people and animals do, but I also think practicing gesture drawing from imagination is truly helpful. For instance, I usually do some gesture drawings of characters I’m about to work with in a sequence. It helps me find a short-hand to start building from. The simpler, the better. Especially early on a project, it really helps to find a quick way to draw a character over and over without repeating yourself all the time.

I remember Life Drawing teachers telling me to “draw from within” and to “feel the weight”. It’s absolutely true, but in terms of storyboarding, other elements came to be as important to the process. Silhouette and a sense of “cartooning” is tremendously helpful to communicate certain things clearly to an audience.

I’m only focusing on character posing right now (and this is just an introduction to the subject). Gesture drawing is very close to thumb-nailing, another ultra-helpful skill. More on that later.

For those who want to spend some money on great books on the subject, I highly recommend you to pick up “Drawn To Life: 20 Golden Years of Master Classes of Disney Master Classes” (Vol. 1 and 2) , from Walt Stanchfield. Do it.

Do you have any spare time in your life to help curious learners give some lessons on art? I mean, however bad you think you are in teaching others, you can still be some aid, at least by sharing what you experience during creating art

I dont really have time to do that, im sorry…  im not an art teacher, and i feel my experiences are of little value. so instead i hope this list of resources made by others can help you more than i can:

Art Youtube Channels:

Free Online Courses on a ton of subjects (including art!)

Brushes:

Inspiration & Stories:

Archives & Free Resources:

Books:

*Drawing

*Sketching

*Animation

*Color

*“Art of” Books:

Remember, a resource post is nothing if you dont use it. You can watch videos and click links all day, but nothing replaces putting the time in to draw. You get best at what you do most. Draw the most, and you will get good at it. I promise.

good luck!!!

The Will Roland master class, pt. 2

Part 1 is here!: [x]

A bunch of people asked me for more info, so here’s the extended cut of my post-Will Roland freak-out :D I’m so glad you guys found my post interesting–thank you so much for all the Asks!!! I thought it’d just be one of those rambly personal posts that sits there gathering virtual dust with a grand total of three notes, haha.

Y’all asked to hear about the more nitty-gritty details, so here’s stuff I pulled from the notes I took during the class and from the initial draft of the first post. These are mostly technical things and stuff about how he approaches song interpretation, and as someone on the other end of it (I’m trying to learn songwriting), I find it absolutely FASCINATING. I learned a lot from that one class, and I hope you guys enjoy it, too!

~~Will Roland freak-out, extended cut:~~

  • How Will describes his career: The founder/director of the program went to NYU Steinhardt with Will. She was talking about how he graduated seven years ago and how amazing it is that now, he’s on Broadway. His reply:
    • “This was my Broadway debut, so it’s all going downhill from here!” –Will Roland

fallingwinter00  asked:

what is a classpect?

Classpect is a system that was created by Andrew Hussie in the game called Sburb which is in his webcomic called Homestuck. It is a combination of the word “class” and “aspect” as, in the webcomic, there are 12 regular classes, 2 master classes and 12 possible aspects with a potential of 168 possible “Hero Titles”.

People have many interpretations on what each class and aspect means because the creator NEVER gave the readers the answers on what these words mean but the most popular interpretations of what they could possibly mean were derived by @bladekindeyewear. What he mostly did was:

There are a lot of classpect blogs out there that mostly follow this theory to an extent and/or put their own spin on it depending on their interpretation/understanding of the system including myself. Some deny bladekindeyewear’s theory, some stick to it and try to see what the combination of each class and aspect could possibly mean, some do a mix of both.

What you see from the classpect tags are people who still love this system because your Hero Title will affect how Sburb is played. It’s mostly trying to find out the role you are meant to play in life.

It is a really messy theory but it is quite fun depending on how you interpret each class and aspect, and how it pertains to yourself and your “quest”.

taranandart  asked:

Hi Arielle, are there any books you would recommend for someone who wants to study illustration? like to help teach one composition, anatomy and schist?

I actually get this question often so I hope you don’t mind that I’m answering this publicly so that I have a masterlist to link to. These are all bent towards the animation industry but a lot of the concepts still work for illustration.
