The Phantom Empire, Mascot Pictures 1935 - A lobby card for the first of a twelve part Mascot Pictures serial featuring Gene Autry in his first role as ‘the singing cowboy.’ The film is a strange combination of western, musical, and science fiction. Autry discovers the ancient civilization of MU under his ranch - the plot revolves around the conflict between ruthless speculators from the surface who want to exploit the huge reserve of radium below and the Muranians who have their own agenda.
I really really want everyone to know that in Moscow Idaho there is a laundromat where they literally took this picture of Muffy from Harvest Moon, edited out the child, and replaced her hair with bubbles, and that picture is blown up on their huge sign as their laundromat mascot
I’M CURRENTLY WRITING A NEW PODCAST IN MY HEAD ABOUT AN UNDEAD PARK RANGER. WORKING TITLE IS “DEATH AND RECREATION”
IT REVOLVES AROUND THE DAILY ON-GOINGS IN A BIZARRE NATIONAL PARK VISITED BY THE UNDEAD AND MYTHICAL CREATURES. THE PARK RANGER IS A SKELETON BALANTLY BASED OFF THE VOODOO RANGER MASCOT PICTURED BELOW. STRANGE THINGS ARE ALWAYS HAPPENING THERE AND IT’S HIS JOB TO KEEP SOME SEMBLANCE OF PEACE IN THIS PARK BETWEEN LIFE AND THE AFTERLIFE.
I JUST LOVE THE LOOK OF THE RANGER OKAY? IT’S REALLY COOL TO ME AND IS MY CURRENT AESTHETIC!
By the way, I shouldn’t be starting another new podcast idea. I can barely keep the one alive as it is…
Alex and I made a point of getting as many pictures with mascots as we could.
