martes

Sable - Martes zibellina

The species Martes zibellina (Carnivora - Mustelidae), commonly known as Sable, is a species of marten distributed throughout northern Asia (China, Finland, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Poland, and Russia).

The pelt of the Sable is very valuable, and sables have been hunted for their fur for hundreds of years. It has been estimated that just a few thousands of individuals of this species remain in China. Globally the species’ population was historically fragmented due to hunting, and it has since recovered and is now fairly abundant in Siberia and the Far East.
