marjorie organ

Lady in Black with Spanish Scarf (O in Black with a Scarf), detail (1910). Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929). Oil on canvas. De Young Museum.

The woman depicted is Henri’s wife, Marjorie Organ, whom he often affectionately referred to as “O.” Organ was a cartoonist for the NY Journal and active in the Dress Reform Movement. Henri used vigorous, fluid brushstrokes to present his wife as a strong, liberated woman, clothed in loose, modern attire who gazes out directly and confidently.
