Happy 195th birthday, Marius Ivanovich Petipa!
Marius Petipa, a ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer, who is considered to be the most influential ballet master and choreographer of ballet who has ever lived, was born on this day 195 years ago. He was born in France and lived in Russia from 1847 until his death in 1910. From 1869 to 1903, Petipa held the position of Director of the Ballet Company of the St Petersburg Imperial Theatres. Without Petipa, Russian ballet would have probably developed in a completely different way. One cannot imagine Russian ballet without such works as The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, La Bayadère, Raymonda, Don Quixote and, certainly, Swan Lake. Every modern choreographer who stages these works has to consider what was done by Petipa.
