Do what you want, make the things you want to see, because more than likely you’re not going to have any material rewards, so you might as well not sell that part of yourself out. My advice to young artists would be to follow the path they themselves recognize as the right one. Chasing after false idols or role models is always a dead end. Even if the path they want to follow might seem strange or doesn’t seem to promise much success, stick to it. It’s the only way to deal with the things that need to be dealt with. You can’t do it according to a recipe or instructions from others. Art doesn’t necessarily have to make an artist famous. My advice to the young artist, to the young architect, is, first of all, does architecture, or art, sculpting, painting, drawing, is that what you really, really want to do more than anything else in the world and you would do anything to be able to do it, because it really fires you. I think the best advice I got really came from work experience. How do you know you’re an artist? That is the main question. To know you’re an artist or not is like breathing. You don’t question breathing. You have to breathe otherwise you just die so you breathe. So if you wake up in the morning and you have some ideas and you have to make them and this becomes an almost obsession and you have to create, you have the urge to create…I think a great artist has to be ready to fail, which not too many people do. Because when you have success in a certain way and the public accepts you in a certain way, you start somehow involuntarily producing the same images, the same type of work, and you’re not risking. The real artists always change their territories, and they go to the land they’ve never been. There is unknown territory, and then you can fail and you can risk…“Ready to fail,” that makes a great artist. The only advice I have is probably something young artists and musicians already know. Although some of them may have the ambition to be the next Jay-Z, the number of those artists are very small. And often the artists that are very successful that way, they don’t have much flexibility. Why Virtue & Moir deserve to win Gold at Sochi 2014.
Not since Grisuk and Platov have an ice dance team captivated the figure skating world. With their on-ice chemistry, spectacular lines and enviable technique, Virtue and Moir have cemented their place in ice dance history as being some of the greatest technicians the sport has ever seen.
That being said, it was with a heavy heart that I watched their Free Dance choreography for this season. It is at times disjointed and flow-less, a far cry from ‘Mahler’ their Gold winning routine at Vancouver. Speculations have been thrown around about Zoueva’s preference and favourtism between her ice dance teams. As the two best couples in the world, Virtue & Moir and Davis & White’s rivalry has been a topic of great discussion. However, this season, Davis & White’s choreography lends itself to an Olympic winning program. Their choreography is far superior and suited to their athletic style. Davis and White will win Olympic Gold however it would be a tremendous shame if Virtue and Moir were given silver. Not that silver is anything to sneeze at but it would show that all the technique mastery in the world cannot be trumped by the exquisite choreography Davis & White’s hold.
I personally would like Virtue and Moir to win Gold. Not for the seven minutes that they will be on the ice in Sochi, but for the 17 years that they have committed to becoming the best skaters of our generation.
I’m an American. And God, do I love my country. But Olympics 2014, I was rooting for Tessa & Scott the entire way.
When I first discovered ice dance in 2011, I was in the midst of watching the Grand Prix Final. Davis/White struck me as technically clean and mechanically perfect, and I was proud of them because they were American, like me. I wanted to become a fan, but as soon as Virtue/Moir came on, I knew that wouldn’t ever happen. They skated just as cleanly and beautifully as Davis/White, but there was something more. Tessa & Scott made me feel invested in the dance, and the emotion they brought to the performance was near blinding.
Today, they won the silver for ice dance. And hell yeah, I’m happy. But you know what? They should’ve won the gold. Davis/White can skate however clean and spot-on they want, but they will never bring the level of feeling that Virtue/Moir possesses.
I think this year, there was a lot stacked against Tessa & Scott. First, Marina has obviously favored the Americans, especially since Meryl is rumored to be dating her son. If you google Marina’s 2013 interviews, it’s very obvious she put more effort into choreographing Davis/White’s dances. And then there’s the whole judging scandal. While I didn’t believe anything at first, it does seem highly suspicious, that Davis/White’s combined score remains that much higher than Virtue/Moir. There has only ever been the marginal point between the two teams, but that is not reflected here in Sochi. And damn it, that’s unfair. If the judges can’t appreciate the exotic beauty that is Tessa & Scott, then it just proves even further that this team is on a different level altogether.
I’m mad, but I love these two and always will, no matter what. An American commentator once said, “Virtue/Moir have been two of the most influential ice dancers over the last few years, innovating new lifts and taking risk after risk. But boy, have those risks paid off.”
