Often known as Madame or Countess d'Aulnoy, Marie-Catherine was a writer and salonnière.  She published a total of twelve books, but she is best known for her two collections of folk tales: Les Contes des Fées and Contes Nouveaux ou Les Fées à la Mode.  In using these titles, Marie-Catherine coined a new phrase which was soon translated to English as “fairy tales.”
