Courage! I have shown it for years; think you I shall lose it at the moment when my sufferings are to end?

- Marie Antoinette by Joseph Ducreaux

‘We had a beautiful dream and that was all … I could not have any pleasure in the world if I abandoned my children.… I do not even have any regrets’ - Marie Antoinette to the Chevalier Jarjayes on his persuading her to escape alone from the Tower.

Gift of Louis XV to Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria, 1758

This present made by Louis XV to Empress Maria Theresa marked the change of the European system of alliances after the Austro-Prussian war of succession as well as the rapprochement between Austria and France in 1756.

In 1758, the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory delivered to the Viennese Court 185 pieces of a table and dessert service, 38 figures for a table centre-piece, and 116 other pieces of porcelain including déjeuners, potpourris, vases, cups, a fountain, amber-pots, pie-pots and Land-basins. Also added were 21 for a dessert centre-piece. Only 45 pieces of the original service still exist.
