Motivated Monday: Courage for Aspiring Journalists

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.
- Helen Keller

I’m giving two weeks notice at my day job at the law firm today. No, I don’t have another job lined up (other than my freelancing gig). However, I’m taking action before anymore of my motivation is beaten to death at this horrible cubicle hell. Yes, I will miss having a steady paycheck. A lot. But in exchange, I’ll have time to truly devote my efforts to something I’m passionate about. You have to sacrifice a few pawns to get to the king, right?

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared of failure. Because I am. Very. But I’m trying to have faith in my abilities. If my past is any indication of my future, then I’m destined to succeed. At the very least, I’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that I was brave enough to have tried my best.

Motivational journalist of the day: Mariana Van Zeller; she works for Vanguard (Current TV) and here’s an excerpt from her bio about struggling to make it as a journalist:

She applied to Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism three times: her first application was rejected, and her second was wait-listed. After her third application in 2001, Van Zeller flew to New York and knocked on the dean’s door, explaining her dream of becoming a journalist in the United States. The dean was impressed and allowed her to enroll. Read full bio here.

So, how badly do you want your dream career?

Nothing would make me happier than if you could all just watch this documentary. I know a lot of you won’t watch the full twenty six minutes (or any at all) so for the sake of your attention span, skip to 2:00. It’s good, I swear. These are problems you won’t hear about on the news, unfortunately, and I hope it makes you realize how petty most of your problems actually are.

“Cage Fighting In The USA” Documentary

Mariana van Zeller explores the fastest growing sport in America - Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). MMA is now a billion-dollar industry, watched by millions on national TV. But increasingly, amateurs are stepping onto the mat and drawing blood. Mariana meets male and female cage fighters to understand why they love this sport. We also meet Savant Young, a professional fighter and lead trainer at Fight Academy MMA gym in Pasadena, CA. Finally, Mariana spends time in a church run by “The Fight Pastor,” who ministers a flock of young men who fight for Jesus.
