Rubens painted the Genoese aristocrat Brigida Spinola the year after her marriage to the Marquis Giacomo Massimiliano Doria. According to the National Gallery of Art, women from 17th-century Genoa were able to exercise a level of self-government significantly higher than women from other Italian states at the time. Spinola Doria is represented as an exceptionally regal noblewoman.
