The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

From The Wind’s Twelve Quarters: Short Stories by Ursula Le Guin

With a clamor of bells that set the swallows soaring, the Festival of Summer came to the city Omelas, bright-towered by the sea. The rigging of the boats in harbor sparkled with flags. In the streets between houses with red roofs and painted walls, between old moss-grown gardens and under avenues of trees, past great parks and public buildings, processions moved. Some were decorous: old people in long stiff robes of mauve and grey, grave master workmen, quiet, merry women carrying their babies and chatting as they walked. In other streets the music beat faster, a shimmering of gong and tambourine, and the people went dancing, the procession was a dance. Children dodged in and out, their high calls rising like the swallows’ crossing flights, over the music and the singing. All the processions wound towards the north side of the city, where on the great water-meadow called the Green’ Fields boys and girls, naked in the bright air, with mudstained feet and ankles and long, lithe arms, exercised their restive horses before the race. The horses wore no gear at all but a halter without bit. Their manes were braided with streamers of silver, gold, and green. They flared their nostrils and pranced and boasted to one another; they were vastly excited, the horse being the only animal who has adopted our ceremonies as his own. Far off to the north and west the mountains stood up half encircling Omelas on her bay. The air of morning was so clear that the snow still crowning the Eighteen Peaks burned with white-gold fire across the miles of sunlit air, under the dark blue of the sky. There was just enough wind to make the banners that marked the racecourse snap and flutter now and then. In the silence of the broad green meadows one could hear the music winding through the city streets, farther and nearer and ever approaching, a cheerful faint sweetness of the air that from time to time trembled and gathered together and broke out into the great joyous clanging of the bells.

Fili x Reader: Adjusting to Middle Earth

(Author’s Note:  So sorry about how long this took!!!  I really appreciate you for hanging in there and being so patient!!   And this was absolutely the most adorable request, so I had a lot of fun writing it!  I really, really hope you enjoy it!

Request: Along the normal lines of you ended up in the company. But a story where he (Fili) kinda takes the reader under his wing-shows her how to ride his pony, how to defend herself.. he reads to her since she can’t obviously read anything there… and a fluffy ending–like she cuddles with him under his blanket?

Also, gif is not mine!  Credit to original owner!)

“You might want to tighten your grip on the reigns,” Fili instructed.  You could just hear the amusement in his tone.  Even after all this time you spent traveling with the Company, he still couldn’t get over the fact that you didn’t know how to ride a pony.  “The pony will go anywhere he pleases unless you guide him.”

“Right,” you nodded, trying to hide your smile.  “Got it.”

The last few months you’ve been in middle earth have been challenging in many different ways.  You came from a world of technology; cars, electricity, the internet.  And now you were forced to adjust to life on the road with no phone, television, or anything of the sort.  The first few weeks, the Company had decided to let you share a pony with someone since you did not know how to ride.  It just so happened that you and Fili ended up bonding over the course of the journey.  You felt more comfortable asking him questions about middle earth.  Of course you knew the basic plot of the Hobbit, but what they don’t tell you is the small details of everyday life in middle earth.  So, he insisted on using all of the spare time between destinations to teach you how to ride the pony.

So here you were, sitting near the front of the saddle while Fili perched right behind you, hands gently moving yours farther down the reigns.  The close contact brought a blush to your cheeks.  This whole thing certainly wasn’t helping your crush on the handsome, blonde prince.  You tried to just bury your feelings and hope that you could make it through this journey without embarrassing yourself in front of the Company.  But it was getting harder with each passing week you spent with them.  Fili had become your guide, teaching you everything you needed to know about surviving here.  You were glad to have a good friend, but it was nearly impossible to avoid your feelings at this point.

“You’re doing great, _______,” he told you.  “Really, it’s not bad at all.”

“Well, it helps to have a nice teacher,” you replied, shooting him a smile over your shoulder.  “I’m sorry your stuck with me.  The only girl in middle earth who can’t ride a pony.”

He grinned back.  “It doesn’t make you any less worthy to be a part of the Company.  It just means that you come from a place where things are different.  Besides, I don’t see it as being stuck with you..  It was my decision to help you in the first place.”

   “But…why?  If I may ask.”

He leaned in a little more, making you freeze.  “Because I could not leave a beautiful damsel in distress to fend for herself.”

Your mouth fell open, and you were glad that he was behind you so he couldn’t see your expression. He called you beautiful?  You straightened up a bit and regained your composure just in time to shoot him another look over your shoulder.

“A damsel in distress that saved your life,” you reminded him.

“Ah, yes, how could I forget?  You rescued me from that river the Company had to cross.  You’re not such a damsel when it comes to rescuing others, I suppose.”

“You suppose?” you laughed.  “I guess that’s a start.”

The two of you ended your conversation when Thorin barked orders from up ahead to stop and set up camp.  Fili hopped off the pony and reached to help you dismount.  You wrapped your arms around his neck as he lowered you to the ground.

   “T-thanks,” you told him.

   “No problem.”

At this point, you were a little grateful to have some space.  You knew the routine of setting up camp by now.  You helped gather firewood, set up your bedroll, and gave Bombur the proper ingredients for dinner.  However, that didn’t stop you from sneaking occasional glances at a certain prince.

“Good evening, ________,” Kili said from somewhere behind you, making you jump and drop a bunch of supplies from your arms.  “Sorry,” he laughed, looking between you and Fili who was tending to the ponies.  “Am I…interrupting something?”

“No, of course not,” you said, blushing.  “I was just…admiring the ponies.  They’re such beautiful creatures.”

“They are, aren’t they?  With their long, golden mane and braided mustache-”

  “Kili,” you warned.

“Please,” he chuckled.  “I’ve seen how the two of you look at each other.  Why don’t you say something?”

“Because it’s awkward.  I don’t think Fili feels the same way.  He’s just helping me with learning what I can about middle earth so that I can survive.”

“I know my brother, and believe me, he does like you.”

“Even if that’s the case,” you paused, glancing at the leader of the Company.  “There’s no way Thorin’s going to be okay with it.”

Kili dismissed your concern with the wave of his hand.  “Never mind him.  Uncle needs to, as you put it, ‘lighten up.’”

You chuckled.  “I’m still not convinced that telling Fili how I feel is a good idea.  Nice try, but we all more important things to worry about.  Like reclaiming Erebor, for instance?”

“That is months away,” he pointed out.  “Besides, I don’t know what could be more important than love.”

“What was that, Kee?” Fili’s voice joined the conversation, making the two of you look at him in surprise.

“Oh, hello, brother,” Kili clapped a hand on his back.  “______ and I were just discussing the importance of love.”

“I see,” Fili gave you a questioning look, to which you just shrugged.  “Well, you’ll have to let me borrow her for a minute.  She and I need to go over some fighting techniques.”

“Right, training,” you nodded.  “I’ll see you later, Kili.”

“Indeed,” he replied slowly.  “See you later.”

Once you and Fili were out of earshot, the blonde prince gave you a look.  “Okay, what was that about?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” you shrugged again.  “Kili is just acting a little strange.”

Fili raised his arms in a defensive stance, nodding for you to do the same.  “I wonder about him sometimes.  He’s spending more and more time with you.”

The two of you practiced throwing punches.

“Yeah, we’ve become good friends,” you admitted, smiling.  It was true.  The dark-haired brother of your crush had been spending more time getting to know you.  Even figured out you were crushing on Fili.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he had…feelings for you.”

You had to refrain from laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of his statement.  Yes, you and Kili had become closer.  But it was certainly not romantic!  Kili teased you, and you gave him a hard time; just like a brother and sister would.

“I can assure you that’s not the case,” you told Fili.  He rested a hand on your elbow to correct your stance.  “In fact,” you ventured.  “He’s trying to convince me to tell someone else about my feelings for them.”

At that, Fili paused, his hand not leaving your arm.  “Oh?”

“Yep,” you nodded, mentally face-palming.  Perhaps it was a bad idea to say something.

“And this person you have feelings for…  he’s a member of the Company?”

“What’s he like?” Fili’s eyes scanned the camp, pausing on each of Company member suspiciously.  He really didn’t know.

“Well…He’s always there to help me,” you replied.  Fili’s eyes met yours, and his lips turned up in a smile.  You could see a glint in his blue eyes a he leaned in a little closer.  But before he could say anything more-

“Fili!” Thorin called.  “We need more firewood!”

Fili gave you one last longing look.  “Sorry.”

“It’s okay,” you giggled.  “I’ll talk to you later.”

You hugged your knees close to your chest, leaning towards the fire in an attempt to absorb its warmth.  Even with your cloak, it was freezing.  The others seemed be doing just fine.  How fortunate for them.  Most of the Company had fallen asleep, save for Kili and Bofur, who took the first watch of the night.

You couldn’t stop thinking about your earlier conversation with Fili.  you had basically said that you had feelings for him.  And he had smiled.  Surely, that was a good sign?  He returned your feelings.  But of course Thorin had to interrupt the moment by making his nephew get firewood when there were plenty of others available for the task.

A shiver ran down your spine as another cold wind blew through the camp.  You squeezed your eyes shut and scooted a little closer to the fire.  You hadn’t even noticed the footsteps that approached.

“Here,” Fili’s voice was barely audible as he gently took a seat on your left side, draping a blanket over both of you.  You were too cold to get embarrassed or blush at the gesture.  Instead, you cuddled up against his side gratefully.

“Thank you,” you mumbled tiredly, resting your head against his shoulder.  “Why is it that I’m the only one bothered by the cold?”

“My people can withstand extreme temperatures a lot better than most,” he replied quietly, arm around your shoulder.  “Better?”

“Good.”  He paused.  “So, to continue our earlier conversation…”

“Um, right.”  You suddenly became aware of the close contact, blushing.  “In case you weren’t sure…it’s you.”

He chuckled.  “I had my suspicions when you dropped that hint earlier, but thank you for confirming it.  And just to let you know, I feel the same way.”

“Oh…good to know.”  You paused.  “What now?  I mean, we should probably wait to tell Thorin, or anyone, really.  I don’t really want the unnecessary attention…”

“I agree,” he nodded.  “For now, we don’t tell anyone.  Although, I have a feeling Kili will just know.”

You chuckled, snuggling closer to him.  “I’m starting to think he knows us better than we know ourselves.”

“Probably,” he agreed.  “He could always tell what I was feeling and why before even I knew it.”

“I’m kind of glad.  Or else I wouldn’t have had the chance to tell you how I felt.”

   “Me too.”

The conversation gave way to a comfortable silence as you both watched the fire.  At some point, you felt your eyes fluttering closed as sleep began to overtake you.  It was an eventful day, that’s for sure.  The last thing you remember was hearing the peaceful crackle and snap of the fire while enjoying the warmth.

bornwithgasolineheart  asked:

Omg dude I love your regency!AU!!!! Can you imagine Bucky waking Tony up early in the morning, acting all weird and suspicious with a bag full of something as he guides the omega through unknown hallways and Tony is so confused. And then, they're outside the stables and Tony is even more confused but at the same time elated like, "are we going to feed the horses?" and he's so happy for that but bucky just smiles and says, "it's even better than that".

They go in and they’re met with horses neighing. Tony, of course, goes to pet every horse he can see and Bucky patiently waits for him before leading him to the most beautiful creature he has ever seen- a giant, chestnut horse, that’s Tony’s and only Tony’s, his to name and care for and train. And Tony can only stare as Bucky gives him the bag, that was actually full of horse treats like apple slices a d carrots.

The morning is spent on learning how to take care of a horse, like grooming and feeding, etc. Bucky teaches the omega how to ride other than sideways and this is how morning rides with Bucky start. Steve occasionally joins them, but this will remain their special time Sorry for the long rambling but your AU got me going and I just had to share this

Okay but in the morning when Bucky comes and wakes him, Tony gasps and pulls the blankets up over his head. “James! I’m not dressed!” And Bucky being like “You’re wearing more than I do when I spar??” But then he rolls his eyes and sighs and says “Just–get dressed and meet me outside.” He pauses, then adds, “Put on something that you don’t mind getting dirty.” And Tony does, wondering just what they’re going to do that he needs to worry about getting dirty (gardening?) but then he balks because Natasha’s not there. “This is inappropriate! Her Majesty will be upset!” (Tony has no idea Sarah has put these rules in place for Tony’s sake and not for Steve and Bucky. Tony’s a delicate flower.) “Then we just won’t tell her,” Bucky tells him slowly, and then grabs his hand and begins dragging him down the hallway.

And Tony is so nervous, so afraid of being caught, so he keeps his mouth shut and follows silently. He doesn’t recognize most of these hallways and for a moment he feels a thrill of real, bone-chilling fear–but Bucky wouldn’t hurt him. (He mostly believes this. But there’s a little niggling doubt.) He’s even more confused when he’s led outside but then–then he hears the shuffling of hooves, the sound of lips flapping–he’s only heard them a few times but he knows this is what horses sound like. Tony clings to Bucky’s hand, nearly vibrating with excitement. He gets to give the horses apples.

Except apparently he doesn’t? Bucky didn’t bring apples? But that’s okay because apparently too many apples is bad for them and Tony gets to pat each one’s face and coo at them as they walk through the stables. They all have names, some sillier than others, and he giggles over “Cigar” and “Dr. Fager” and “I’ll Have Another” and  “Mr. Prospector.” He even gets to meet Steve’s silver and gray horse, The Captain, and Bucky’s beautiful black, white-stockinged mare, Red Star.

“This one has no name yet,” Tony says sadly, admiring the beautiful chestnut. It probably just doesn’t have a name marker yet. It’s probably something strong, like Admiral or Man o’ War. “Well that’s because you haven’t named him,” Bucky tells him gently. “Oh.” Tony strokes his palm over the horse’s nose a few times before whipping back toward him. “Wait what?!” “He’s yours,” Bucky says, and then hands him the bag, and Tony fumbles but then he opens it and sees apples and manages a stuttered, “You said they’d get colic–” “Unless it’s moderated. A couple apples as a treat every once in a while won’t hurt them.” Tony’s eyes widen as Bucky whips out a knife, flips it in the air to hold the handle out to him. “It’s better if you cut the apples up, too, so they don’t choke.”

Bucky shows him how to groom the horse, assuring him that they have a farrier to look after its hooves, laughs a little when Tony takes the time to carefully braid its mane. He needs to give the horse one pail of grain in the morning for breakfast. The couriers take care of the second pail of oats in the evening when the horses are brought in from the pasture. You need to put the saddle blanket up higher or he’ll whip it back off. This is how you put on the saddle–

“This–this is the wrong kind of saddle, Bucky, wait, this is–Bucky it’s wrong wait!” Tony grabs his arm but Bucky just draws the belts tight anyway, gives the saddle a tug to make sure it’s on firmly. “No, this is the right kind. You’re gonna learn to ride a horse like this.” And Tony stares up at him, uncomprehending, before he leans in and whispers, “But won’t it make me unable to have children?” “Why the–” Bucky takes a breath. He has learned to hide his first reaction to the terrible things Tony has said. “No, honey. Omegas can ride horses like this and still have children.” “Are you sure?” “Sarah rides horses like this all the time and had Steve.”

Bucky saddles Red Star and helps Tony get on the horse outside the stables. He clutches the reins with white knuckles and keeps looking at Bucky for reassurance as he carefully walks the chestnut around. Then he gets a little confident, starts sweet talking his horse, calling him sweetheart and honey and buttercup. “How about we try a trot?” Bucky offers, and shows Tony how to urge his horse faster. They get up to a canter that Tony is delighted by before they have to head back in, and he shows Tony how to wipe his horse down and give him water. The couriers will put him out to pasture with the other horses.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, this giant, spirited chestnut ends up with the name ‘Sweetheart.’

LOTR CHAPTERS: THE TWO TOWERS - Chapter Two: The Riders of Rohan

Their horses were of great stature, strong and clean-limbed; their grey coats glistened, their long tails flowed in the wind, their manes were braided on their proud necks. The Men that rode them matched them well: tall and long-limbed; their hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them; their faces were stern and keen. In their hands were tall spears of ash, painted shields were slung at their backs, long swords were at their belts, their burnished shirts of mail hung down upon their knees.

looks like I have another pile of Briggs headcanons so here you go!!

  • Despite his size, Buc can be impressively stealthy and light on his feet. This has led to a lot of startled soldiers. Sometimes it’s an accident.
  • New transfers to the fort, regardless of age, are affectionately referred to as “cubs” by their superiors, who are very protective of them starting immediately.
  • To the inhabitants of the fort, anyone living south of Briggs counts as a “southerner”, including the residents of North City, who endure their share of good-natured teasing. Anyone who brings up the fact that Briggs itself is south of Drachma will be met with an indignant look and a quick subject change.
  • Falman was transferred to Briggs from Northern HQ after Miles crossed paths with him on a North City supply run and took note of his quick thinking and impressive memory skills. He mentioned this to Olivier back at the fort, and she suggested the transfer right away.
  • The horses of Fort Briggs are very well cared for and used mostly for long-distance patrols. Many of the stablehands are young people from North City who were happy to find an employment opportunity close to home.
  • Some of the horses are used by various soldiers, while others belong to individuals; Buc favors a huge draft mare and takes delight in braiding her mane and tail, complete with bows to match his own. He also sneaks her sugar cubes from the breakfast table.

A Sebaciel one-shot.

Summary:  Ciel lived in a small village where they sacrificed a person to the gods every spring, this year he was the sacrifice.

A/N: Thanks to @lovemyciel for cheering me on, I wouldn’t have finished this without her much appreciated support. Love you mimi-chan <3. Feedback is the reason I live.

Read on AO3

When he was five, Ciel had watched the villagers slaughter a sheep, they placed it -it because if it’s a he we can’t hurt it anymore- on the hard, unyielding rock that served as an altar and made a gash through its throat.

Blood, shining crimson, flowed down on the altar, coloring everything red.

Drip, drip, drip.

So much blood.

The only thought in his mind was that the sheep didn’t fight, it lowered its head, accepted its fate. His people said it was a good omen, the gods were happy with them, and they were lying. There was no God, only demons, Ciel knew. He saw him, eyes like the blood spilled from the poor animal, hair dark like an angry night, and he was laughing. He wanted Ciel to come to him.

Ciel didn’t.

I have this head canon that Bishamon's younger skinki will braid Kuraha's mane with lots of flowers or beads, and he LOVES it, because 1) he appreciates that they help keep his mane neat, and 2) he thinks it looks awesome. Plus, Bisha always gets a good chuckle out of it. :3

Omg omg Kuraha with beads and flowers in his mane omG and when he transforms back he still has some in his hair but he doesn’t take it out bc the kids did a wonderful job of putting in he cant ruin it

Dear Pony.Town Staff,

These are absolutely free for you to use. I made these in hopes that you’ll apply them to your game in some way so that the users of your game have even more customization options. I do not require payment for these. You can use them for free in your game, even the ideas for them or the actual art itself.

Pictured above in picture 1 (From left to right):
Spiky Tuft, Spiky Tail - Curly Puff, Cotton Tail - Braided Mane, Braided Tail - Bubbly Mane, Bubbly Tail - Faux Hawk, Windswept Tail - Wet Mane, Fish Tail

Pictured above in picture 2 (From left to right):
Paint - Chestnut - Zebra - Scars - Deer - Dapples

I did NOT draw the base for this. It belongs to Pony.Town staff.
However, I did draw the manes, tails, and markings.

If you’d like to see these in game, please reblog!

15 Things I Personally Want

1. Hide other players option
Name says it all. As someone who likes playing solo and taking screenshots, this is vERY mUCH wanted.

2. Seasons, weather changes
As @stormiesquall mentioned, bright grass in the spring with cute flowers, orangey leaves and less bright grass in the fall, etc. But since I doubt SSO will add entire seasonal changes, I’m hoping at least for weather changes per day? Like sunny days (the standard we have now) and gloomy days, or something in between. Maybe even rain or mist, though there should be an option to turn it off, and it shouldn’t show up in races or championships. + a moon at night, please. And while we’re at it, remove the shadows in dino valley!

3. Club vs. Club competitions
My idea is to have races/games you can do with your club. You could enter if you’re in a club with at least ?? 5 something members online. You finish the game-race thing together and get a score. Other clubs will try to beat that. Like daily races. OR competing against another club ‘‘live’’. This idea might make clubs more attracting for players who don’t like clubs much.

4. An existing pasture
… thus being able to visit the horses you send to your pasture. Just imagine how cool it’d be to walk around in a big pasture with all the horses don’t fit into your stables. Maybe .. just maybe .. giving the horses animations like walking around etc could be added too?? And they stop walking / galloping as soon as you get close to them.

5. Upgraded horse models
I disagree with having 2 types of models for one breed already (ex the old and new Morgan, etc), but oh well. I wish that they’d at least make the older breed models look a little better, the Jorvik Warmbloods and Fjords for example look a completely different style from the Lippizaners and all the newer breeds. Also giving them smoother animations.

6. Dressage
I know eventually SSO will add this, so I’m not going to go much into how this could work. I just want it now, lol.

7. Animations with your horse
I think the easiest would be if these animations (aka interactions) with your horse would be something like the emotions / animations you can do in chat. You’d have to stand close to your horse and then you’d be able to choose what kind of interaction you’d want to do with your horse. Just things like petting, hugging or scratching him. I don’t know.

8. Wild horse toggler in settings
It’d be nice if players could toggle ‘‘hide my character’’ in the settings so that they can easily play a wild horse instead of diving into the game files.

9. Call for horse
For when you walked far away from it. You’d be able to call/whistle for your current horse and he’d teleport somewhere near you (and walk/run towards you maybe?).

10. Character can jump
Nothing special – the SSL games had this, right?

11. More interaction with friends
A little vague, yeah. But I’d like to be able to invite friends into my stable and send them gifts. Any other ideas? I don’t see them adding the ability to ride your friends’ horses.

12. Stable diversity
I’d like if the outside of the stables all looked (at least a little) different, based on their location. I know they do at some places (Fort Pinta, Jorvik Stables). Also if there were small hints inside MyStable that point to the stable being located in [whereever your homestable is].

13. More tack
I want more western tack, damn it! Especially bridles. Also.. maybe they could add different styles of bridles?

14. More western type & show-jumping races

15. More mane styles
Short chopped or braided sort of things..

I was thinking of adding ‘‘being able to ride horse and cart’’ but it’s not something I actually want in SSO. It’d be cool for a quest or a particular race but that’s it for me.
Feel free to comment, reblog or add your own things.

Petwatch but with a twist it's while Jesse is still in blackwatch, he sees a pony while out on a mission and pleas and begs for one, only a year later do Gabe and Jack get him one. Jesse builds it a little barn. Uses most if not all his money to care for the pony. He names it rose wood. When he is out on a mission, someone is always taking care of her for him. The whole base ends up really liking her and she becomes a unofficial mascot. Jesse learns how to braid her mane with roses.

Good. yes. Give that Cowboy a pony.
Omg can Gabe make her an Official Overwatch Mascot outfit/saddle?!
Maybe Jesse trains her to deliver stuff around base too, like mail to member’s dorms or parts back and forth from the lab to the garage.

I’m anxious about posting this but i absolutely adore @jeusus‘s Viking post (like all of us do let’s be real lol) and had to write a little something to go with it! The first chapter is up on AO3 here, and here’s a sneak peek!

At the head of the table, was the most beautiful creature Ben had ever seen. He was the flame that smiled at him before the water smacked him unconscious, Ben was sure of it. What he thought was just torchlight was a mane of intricately braided hair, large braids and small ones, coming from the top of his head later joined by little ones from the side. Most of it was let loose, it spilled over the man’s shoulders and snaked around his biceps, bright and orange, and…and…angry?
