Heavy Metal Astrology: The Feminine Man & The Masculine Woman
Every now and again, you come across people who transcend gender walls. This is especially so in the metal world where pretty much anything goes. You have everything from the ball-busting alpha man trying to prove his own bravado to the infinitely feminine woman trying her best to prove that she is just as tough as any man. So, this post is devoted to two of my favorite people whom I feel best personify the breaking down of the metal gender paradigm.
How does one determine this astrologically, you might ask? Well, it’s actually quite simple. Feminine energy is equal to introversion, and masculine energy is equal to extroversion. Depending upon the gender, there are certain planets which are more prominent. When looking at this technique, for a man, it’s his moon and Venus placements. These are the stereotypically feminine planets, and if they are placed in any of the feminine signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, or Pisces), it’s a very strong indicator that he will come across more like a female. For a woman, you should be looking at the placements of her sun and Mars. If they are positioned in any of the masculine signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, or Aquarius), it’s a strong indicator that she will come across more like a male, as they are the stereotypically masculine planets in the birth chart. You can also apply this technique to the chart as a whole. If a man’s feminine sign placements outweigh his masculine sign placements, and a woman’s masculine sign placements outweigh her feminine sign placements, then the above is also true. You can also count the ascendant if you like. Use only personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) for this technique, though, because the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) do not have a direct effect on our energies here on Earth.
OLIVER SYKES, BRING ME THE HORIZON: THE FEMININE MAN
A lot of what you’ll notice about Bring Me’s music is that there is a seething, dark and introverted undercurrent to everything. This all comes back to Oli’s abundance of feminine energy, which is very obviously Scorpionic. But on top of all of that introversion lies the very brash, bold, fun-loving, jovial, lively and unapologetically honest sign of Sagittarius, which is the total antithesis of Scorpio energy. The darkness and light come together in a very forthright manner. But ultimately, even though he comes across as confident and brazen on the outside, beneath it all lies a sweet, kind and gentle soul who enjoys the silence and doesn’t want to be the life of the party.

MARIA BRINK, IN THIS MOMENT: THE MASCULINE WOMAN
There is a very obvious masculine undertone to the way that Maria expresses herself, and she makes it known in In This Moment’s music. This all comes back to her abundance of masculine energy, which is, for the most part, Sagittarian. But on top of all of that lies the very meek, feminine, gentle, kind and nurturing sign of Cancer, which is the total antithesis of her plethora of masculine placements. These energies come together in a very empowering manner, not just for her personally. She uses her combination of masculine and feminine energies to show women how to empower themselves. Although she may initially come across as very feminine and girly and introverted on the outside, beneath it all is a warrior goddess who knows her own power and would die before she let any man tell her what to do, what to be or who she is. She’s here to let everyone know that she is just as powerful as any man, if not moreso.
