male variation

The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male.

You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster.

I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?

—  Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post.

you can make a million photosets and there are a million quotes explaining just how exactly it is that you write a ‘strong female character’

but honestly i think the key is just to have many. if pam beasley had been the only woman on the office her soft-spokenness would have been seen as one-dimensional - but pair her up with strict angela, with abrasive jan levinson-gould and with goofy holly, pam suddenly feels a lot more realistic

if ginny or hermione or even dolores umbridge or molly weasley had been the only women in harry potter, think of how frustrating their characters would have been. but throw them all in together - and suddenly there’s a depth to the whole story that feels so much more believable, because when you only have one woman, you’re saying that all women are feisty or are bookish or are frumpy evil megalomaniacs or are warm mothers

in real life, there is an infinite variety of women who make different choices and different mistakes. when you have a movie or a tv show or a book that has a limited amount of women - they almost always feel flat and one-dimensional, because, in a way, they represent all of the women in that particular universe. but if you have multiple women? bam! it’s hard to write a bad female character when you have enough of them that they feel varied and interesting

Mega DraconicGhost variation | Mega Ghost

You guys voted and so here they are! Draconic variation =D I went with a frilled lizard approach, but instead of putting the frills around their necks, I put the frills in the place of their skirts/pants!

Hope you guys like ‘em!! I really enjoyed drawing them ;w; Also! Due to a loss of their natural habitat, this subspecies of the Ralts line adapted to a more arid, dry, desert like environment. They’re known for being rather aggressive, and the Ralts have a tendency to puff themselves up in an attempt to make themselves look bigger. Their frills flare out when they’re startled or are attempting to scare off a predator - as a whole, the subspecies hisses and growls quite frequently u w u

Megas will come later =D

THE ADAAR AND CADASH APPRECIATION MONTH

From September 15th to October 24th, your resident dwarf/qunari appreciation blog will be hosting an entire (technically over a) month dedicated to producing as much content as possible for Inquisitor Adaar and Inquisitor Cadash.

There will be specific days dedicated to both male and female variations of dwarf and qunari inquisitors, along with days dedicated to each possible paramour for a qunari or dwarf inquisitor.

All posts should be tagged as ADAAR AND CADASH APPRECIATION MONTH as I will be tracking that tag and reblog all posts in the tag to the qunarianddwarves blog.

GENERAL ADAAR WEEK: OCTOBER 9TH - 16TH:

GENERAL CADASH WEEK: OCTOBER 17TH - 24TH:
This week is for sharing general content about dwarf inquisitors. Can be used to finish up any content that didn’t get finished or posted during the original Cadash weeks or to post additional content about dwarf inquisitors.

I’ll try to reblog as much as the generated content as I possibly can, but if there’s something you want to show off and it doesn’t manage to make it to the blog, send us a message or throw us an @ tag!

After our Inquisitor weeks are through, we’ll have a month (or possibly over a month) dedicated to Dwarf wardens!

(Additional Note: Anyone with dwarf or qunari Inquisitors that do not identify as male or female can post according to what they selected for their in-game avatar, on general days, or whenever they feel most comfortable posting their content. I wanted to generate content for gender-specific Inquisitors but I also don’t want anyone with non-binary Inquisitors to feel left out!)

Like, there’s still a certain issue where the over-simplified phrase is still in use.

“Sex is what’s between your legs, gender is in your mind.”

Is there any point where it is helpful to say “Your gender is female, but your sex is male”?

Let’s say we categorize people into sexes of “male”,”female”,and “intersex” based solely on their bodies.

Is there any medical benefit?

Even within the category of “cis male”,there are great variations in terms of genetic, hormonal, and muscular structures! For medical purposes, those components must be viewed and treated specifically, not broadly based on a label of “male”.

From a social perspective,is there any benefit from lumping the wide spectrum of AMAB trans people together with cis men and calling them “male-bodied”?

As though there was some commonality between them in society.

It may work as a phrase to drastically simplify trans-ness to cis people, but it is of no use towards actually tackling issues.

As though to tell The Cis ™,that “It’s okay, everything you were taught about gender isn’t wrong after all!”
