Dear Sciblr/Bugblr/Entomoloblr or whatever the “the more legs the better” side of tumblr is called,
Allow me to present a solid, definitive, irrefutable answer to the question, “wtf do Megaphasma denticrus aka giant walking stick insects eat?!?!”
I had this question recently, when I had managed to collect a male and female nymph of this species from my backyard, with the intention of bringing them to the Baker Sanctuary Open House on May 13. I didn’t know if I would be able to find them again closer to the date, and thought people would get more interested in local bugs if they knew that central Texas has some of the most awesome bugs in North America.
I spent hours searching online. Bugguide.net, an invaluable resource for every North American bug found north of Mexico, did not have any information on their diet or host plants. University entomology websites: nothing. The only thing I found was a journal article from the 1970’s that had one sentence about M. denticrus, that being that they ate elm. I went “aha!” and pulled up an elm sapling in my yard, put it in water and placed it in their tank. I also put some woody branches in so they could dangle from them. I saw a couple poops the next day and was very happy to have solved the mystery. Except, they weren’t interested in the elm. What was going on???
The next day, I had collected too much hackberry for the tawny emperor caterpillars, so I put the excess in the stick habitat for dangling. I come home from work that day, and the hackberry branch is destroyed. Poops everywhere.
It was hackberry the whole time.
I knew this, but I couldn’t just take a picture of a leaf that had been nibbled and say “Proof!” because that’s not how science works. Well, just now, as the sun was setting, I heard loud munching from the kitchen. I turn on the light, the sticks freeze in place… With their mouths right on the hackberry leaves.
I hope google picks this up for their answer to “wtf does Megaphasma denticrus eat???” Megaphasma denticrus eats hackberry. At least, MY Megaphasma denticrus NYMPHS eat hackberry. It’s entirely possible there are elm ones. Or other trees. Or the nymphs only eat what the mom ate but eat whatever they want when they grow up. However, the ones in my yard eat hackberry and only hackberry.
I hope that helps the next generation of people like me.

The personification of the sun, ruler of sight and oaths and a titan from Greek mythology. Helios was the son of the titan, Hyperion and Thea, who was sometimes called Euryphaessa and Aethra.
He was said to live in a golden palace far to the east, alongside his mother, wife and children and everyday set out across the vast ocean on his chariot until he reached the land of the Hesperides in the west where he climbed inside a golden cup that carried him across the roughest waters back home.
When the world was first created, it was the rising of Helios that brought forth life either by drying up the primordial mud or melting it. It was also he that first invented the chariot.
At the kidnapping of Persephone it was the all seeing eye of the sun that told Demeter what had happened to her daughter. Helios also used his power to see all, to tell Hephaestus of his wife’s affair with Ares.
When his cattle was slaughtered by Odysseus's men, he sought revenge.
Helios would also become jealous of Poseidon's lover, the male nymph called Nerites and transformed him into a shellfish. The huntress, Arge would pursue a stag, and boasted that she would catch it even if it was as fast as Helios. For this slight, the sun god transformed her into a doe.
He would later curse Phineus to be followed by Harpies, because he had either been revealing prophecies to humans or chose blindness over death in his punishment from Zeus, stating he would rather never see the sun again.
Helios was also known for his favors. In one tale, when Heracles journeyed to Libya, he grew so hot that he shot an arrow at the sun. Helios was so surprised at his daring that he lent the hero his golden cup, who used it to reach Erytheia and therefore, the giant named Geryon.
Orion would also come to him while blind, and was cured. The sun god once let his daughter, Circe, ride in his chariot to the island of Aeaea which became her home. He then gave his favourite son, Aeetes, a golden helmet, a golden set of armour, a chariot and horses. He was even given his own kingdom, Cichyrus before he moved to Colchis.
It was he who gave the Drakones to his granddaughter, Medea. Helios consoled his sister, Eos after her son’s death by making his tombstone appear to speak. The island Rhodes was given to him when Zeus forgot to draw a lot for him when he was deciding whom the island should got too. When Helios brought this up, Zeus began to draw lots again, before the sun god asked that he didn’t. Because of this humility, he was given the island, that he named after one of his consorts, the daughter of Poseidon.
Helios also held a small rivalry with Posideon about who should rule the land of Corinth. One of the Hecatonchires, Briareus, gave Helios the upper lands and the sea god, the lower. In Aesop’s Fables, he had a dispute with Boreas of the north wind, to see who could strip a man of his clothes faster. Helios won because the wind only made the man wrap his clothes around himself tighter.
The most famous myth involving Helios was that of his wayward son, Phaethon, who persuaded the sun god to let him control the chariot. Phaethon was so inexperienced however, that he quickly left control and set the earth ablaze from flying to close. Zeus then smote the boy with his thunderbolt, and he fell into the river of Eridanus. His sisters, the Heliades crowded around the banks and in their mourning were changed into poplar trees with their tears becoming amber. In one version, this was a punishment for yoking the horses wrong.
Helios was also famous for having many consorts and children. His consorts included Aegle, Clymene, Neaera, Rhode, Perse, Ocyrrhoe, Leucothoe, Nausidame, Gaia and Selene. His children included, possibly the Charites, the Heliades, the Heliadae and many many others.

Eren's mother was a nymph herself, Carla was a very beautiful nymph, she became pregnant and gave birth to Eren who is the only known male nymph since nymphs are mostly female.
She was hunted and killed when he was little but he managed to escape. Eren would beat up anyone who made fun of him for being a male nymph, so even though he’s all willowy and beautiful, he’s still capable of kicking ass.
