Joyce Banda (b. 1950) is a Malawian politician, founder of the People’s Party, and the first woman to serve as both president and vice-president of the African country. She was the President of Malawi between 2012 and 2014.
Other positions she occupied over the years are Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Gender, Children’s Affairs and Community Services. She has established various organisations aimed at helping women escape poverty and become financially independent. Her efforts led to the abolition of anti-LGBT laws in Malawi.
