making sense of japanese

5

Hello everyone! 👋🏻
Recently, I made a new friend who happens to speak Japanese and so he has been translating things for me. This karmagisa doujin happened to be one of them. I did the cleaning and typesetting, so that more people can enjoy it like we did! However, I don’t know the original source, and can’t imbed links on mobile anyway, so if you know it, please feel free to add it if you reblog.

getting the hang of hiragana and katakana. everything makes SO much more sense now (excuse my terrible japanese handwriting, i’m practising to make all the characters look more even and correct!). now learning how to write simple greetings and phrases that i’ve picked up over the years, but never knew how to put on paper. it’s all coming together!

A theory about Pearl and why she looks how she does

Pearl’s design is heavily themed around royalty, and this includes her face. See during the eight century many aristocratic women practiced a style known as hikimayu, where they removed their eyebrows and painted them on instead. This was considered beautiful and likely acted as a symbol of their status.

Seeing as Pearl is meant to be a princess type character, with her crown and her japanese name, Hime, meaning princess. It would make sense that her facial appearance is that of an aristocratic woman in hikimayu makeup.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was an interesting observation..

It’s almost as if changing this shit just takes unnecessary effort and causes problems down the line…

She should be posting it on her own blog and dA soon. But for now, I want to show my finished commissions made by @mulberryart!

Paya is very Japanese oriented and it makes sense that Zelda wouldn’t be too familiar with the culture aside from interacting with Impa, Purah, and the Sheikah poet. After the game, perhaps Link and Zelda take a trip to each village to announce their victory and meet Paya!

I also headcanon that the Bolson Construction Company decided to use their superior skills of mastery to rebuild Hyrule Castle! …too bad the only person available that particular day was Karson.

And perhaps at one point in the game before heading to Ganon, Link cuts his hair.
When they visit Gerudo Town, Link’s now allowed in because he appeased Vah Nabooris and gave his Vai outfit to Zelda. She’s enjoying it a little too much so Link decides it’s best to cover her up so she remains modest. But come on, she’s a cutie~

But thank you so much! As usual, your art looks absolutely beautiful!

OTP Idea #908

Imagine Person A is a Kitsune who is known in Person B’s village as a spirit of trickery and mischief. No one knows who exactly Person A is, until B ventures out to discover the motives behind A’s mischief. Once Person B finds Person A, A attempts to woo B into being their spouse with promises of power and freedom.

Alternate to Verb Conjugation (語幹)

I got a few messages asking about an alternative way of learning verb conjugations I mentioned in my last post, so here’s a sort of….rough introduction? It’s also a pretty good way to memorize hiragana so if you still only know romaji I suggest using this as well.

Basically, the use of a verb changes with the ending sound. We can use the verb 遊ぶ (あそぶ、asobu). This literally means “to play,” but a lot of younger people use it as “hang out/have a good time.”

When you learn kana, you usually learn it going down the line as consonant+vowel, like ka-ki-ku-ke-ko, sa-shi-su-se-so, and so on. This is the 五十音順 (gojūonjun), or “syllabary order.”

So the ending of this verb is ぶ、the dakuten of ふ (ha-hi-fu-he-ho)、which is ba-bi-bu-be-bo.

If you familiarize yourself with ばびぶべぼ、you basically have five verb conjugations already under your belt. Please note: the conjugations below aren’t the only verb types, they’re just examples of the way stems can be used.

あそば - stem for the negative plain form (won’t play): あそばない。
あそび - stem for the masu-kei (polite) form: あそびます。
あそぶ - the original dictionary form (play).
あそべ - stem for the potential form (can play): あそべる。
あそぼ - stem for the plain-form volitional (like “let’s play!”): あそぼう。

「あそぼう!」(let’s play/hang!) and「あそべる」(i can play/hang) are two sentences that are easy to remember and give you 1. a grasp on how and why verb changes occur, and 2. an easy way to memorize the sounds in the kana syllabary.

When my friends ask if I want to go out, they say 「また今度遊ぼう?」(またこんどあそぼう)– let’s hang out again next time. In context, this is a super useful phrase and would make learning kana + verb conjugations like a million times easier and more fun because you know how to actually use it

Kana means nothing if you have no idea what the words you’re reading mean. But if you know even just a few verbs, you can remember kana in relation to that verb’s ending and knock out two things at once. You’ll progress quicker and gain a better grasp on the language.

The sun and moon

So I’m taking a Japanese literature class at my university and my professor explained to us that unlike in most cultures where the sun is masculine and the moon is feminine, in Japanese poetry it is the opposite.

This is due to the fact that they believe that the sun is like a woman because she is constant. The sun rises every day, unchanging.

The moon, like a man, leaves and disappears. It sometimes rises but it never stays. It fades and eventually vanishes.

The sun and moon have their set obligations within the universe and due to this they can’t always be together and they become separated for some time.

However, every once in a while the sun and moon reunite for a short fleeting moment,

**note: Most of this information was passed onto me via oral lecture so I do apologize for any misinformation or if I may I have forgotten something. However, if you read and study Japanese poetry, it actually makes a lot of sense.

***Side note, though this is more of a joke, anything that takes place on a bridge is apparently not platonic. It also makes sense why so many shoujo confessions take place on a bridge.

I know your crazy busy with life and use your writing time for drive and winter song but... Could you write a smol sick fic? Nothing long or extravagant! It would be a blessing.

Summary: Yuuri falls ill during a practice at the Ice Castle. Pre-Episode 5.

***

When Victor excused himself from practice to take a quick phone call, Yuuri was fine. Perhaps a little quieter than normal while he rehearsed a combination spin out on the Ice Castle rink, one gloved hand extended gracefully overhead, but there was no indication that anything was wrong.

He was fine.

How that changed so quickly was anyone’s guess.

Victor was gone for less than five minutes, and when he returned, Yuuri was on his knees in the center of the rink with his head in his hands. Victor took one look and started running, even before he fully registered what he was seeing. He wasn’t wearing his skates for practice today, but that didn’t stop him from running out onto the ice and slipping and sliding for the first few steps before he regained his balance.

“Yuuri.” Victor came to a clumsy stop in front of him, and when he dropped to his knees, the ice soaked through the fabric of his pants. He grasped Yuuri’s shoulder and said, “What happened. Did you fall?”

Yuuri was shaking. His face was so pale that even his lips had lost their color, and he kept squeezing his eyes shut and reopening them as if to clear his vision. “Dizzy,” he said.

Hi! I wanted to ask about fantasy world building based on a mix of cultures, even if those cultures are totally different. For example, a country that has an architecture based on egyptian and arab art, or one that is a mix between indian and russian architecture. I dont know if that would be appropiation or offensive, or how to avoid it or doing it in a respectful way. Also if there is a problem only using the art part and having a different made up traditions/lore (thanks for your time!)

On Combining Cultures Respectfully, Art, and Architecture

“Does it make sense within the world”

Avatar: the Last Airbender mixes Inuit and Japanese culture. Is this any form of sensical in the modern world? Sort of, with how there’s a language link between Siberia and the Canadian Arctic. Does it make sense within the confines of A:tLA? Absolutely yes.

I’m not against the concept of cultural blending. It just has to be sensical within the world itself. They might not be neighbours in the real world, but if you end up with a culture that’s “ocean-heavy Arctic on top of Asia”, then Inuit+ Japan makes tons of sense. But had it been even “continental Arctic”, then the Inuit influence would’ve barely made any sense at all, because they’re really not a continental people.

Like mixed-race characters, blending real-world cultures in fantasy isn’t prima facie a problem, but you’d better make sure it makes sense within the world you’re constructing.  Lots of times authors fall prey to the “Rule of Cool” and just throw in things they think are neat without thinking about how they could have reasonably got there.

In the cases you mentioned, there are some historiocultural overlaps between Indian and Russian cultures (for instance, similar building materials, similar types of timbers in temperate parts of India and southern Russia, very deep cultural roots shared between Slavic and certain Indic cultures, etc.) that would give you a foundation to build on.  Other times shared cultural aspects have a common but non-native root—for instance the Russian onion dome and characteristic Indian Taj Mahal-style dome may have a shared origin in Islamic and Middle Eastern architecture.  Islamic culture is native to neither India nor Russia, but it touched and influenced both areas extensively.

Similar constraints hold for Egyptian and Arab art and architecture.  They used similar building materials but produced different results because the culture and artistic preferences were historically different, but we know that Arab culture strongly influenced Egyptian art and architecture in the Islamic period (think going from pyramids to Graeco-Roman amphitheaters to mosques and minarets, but all made out of limestone, mud brick, and very little wood).  Saladin Ahmed’s fantasy novel(s) feature an Islamic/Middle Eastern-influenced culture built on top of a dead Ancient Egypt-analogue [Nikhil’s note: I’m reading this right now and it’s awesome and you should too].

But regardless of the cultural influence, the material culture stays similar in place—in some Indo-Russian hybrid you might be looking at imported marble and precious stones for those buildings whose patrons could afford it, provided they have access to those materials either through production or trade, but for poorer constructions you’re looking at local building materials—so maybe thatch and half-timber framing and wattle-and-daub in Indo-Russia, or stone and mud brick in a desert environment like Arabegypt.  Art and architecture are functions of culture, and culture as a primitive exercise arises from the local environment, since it’s only once you get to the level of at least an organized economic community that outside trade starts to be a significant factor, which would facilitate creating art and architecture that would be exotic to the local environment.
