Moffat Appreciation Day 2016: Happily Ever After

Last year, I wrote about the overwhelming optimism that drove the characters of the Eleventh Doctor’s era to overcome dark situations that could have destroyed them, and this year I want to return to that theme having now seen the last two episodes of series 9 and how that optimism had transformed but ultimately still triumphed.

Where the Eleventh Doctor’s era could be described much like a children’s fairy tale with characters who are put into truly horrifying situations that they overcome through the power of love, the Twelfth Doctor’s era brought the darker side of those stories into focus. Love remained one of the most powerful forces in the universe, but this era explored the reality that love doesn’t always last a lifetime, even for the main characters.

Rory and Amy left the show when their story was finished, and they lived long, happy lives, dying of old age off screen. We all know Cinderella will one day die and so will Amy Pond, but the picture book ends long before that day. When Amy Pond stopped being the Girl Who Waited, it was the beginning of the end of her time on the show, but River Song and Clara Oswald remained on the show long after the stories of ‘The Woman who Killed the Doctor” and “The Impossible Girl” had been resolved.

And they lived until their lives were cut short in tragic, yet heroic deaths. With the direction the show had been taking in series 8 and 9, their stories could have been bleak reminders of the reality that many people die before they ever reach old age, and what we think of as happily ever after is rare (if not impossible), but instead, their endings came with an acceptance of the inevitability of death, while at the same time allowing these women to control their fate in a way we can only dream of in the real world.

The show did not lose all of its optimism as it grew out of it’s fairy tale era, and instead of telling us that River and Clara won’t get their happily ever afters, it asked us to examine how we define happily ever after. Clara Oswald will face the raven and River Song will go to the Library, but those endings do not prevent them from having their own happily ever afters. These two characters are given the opportunity to seize the time they do have and live it the best they can so that when they die, they will have lived full lives on their own terms. Happily ever after does not mean forever. It’s a message we can all take to heart knowing that we too will not live forever.

Clara flies off to see the universe with her new companion, and River Song spends 24 years with the man she loves (and with a vortex manipulator and a time machine, it could easily be more than 24 years). They will both die, just as we will all die, but their stories are neither tragedies nor fairy tales. Their stories are examples of what fantasy does best - addressing the harsh realities of life while allowing the characters to do the things we wish we could do, taking both time and death into their own hands.

You guys are… really nice.

@gibslythe look what you’ve made me do

So I had an endocrinologist appointment today and found out I’m back down to 63kg (138lbs for my American friends) which for someone who is 6'2 isn’t ideal.

On the plus side I like my hair and this filter hides my ever fucking nightmarish stubble. Seriously if I ever meet the inventor of Snapchat filters I owe them so many drinks for devising a way to make me look something approaching presentable.

So yeah here’s a selfie for all my peeps 😇

pros to being my fucking girlfriend
  • tall (6′2″)
  • funny
  • own my own car
  • flosses (who you know that does that? nobody. fresh breath)
  • thick (i know you like em big)
  • crippling social anxiety (means i spend more time with you since i can’t go places alone)
  • snores (breathing on hard mode, always up for a challenge)
  • wears glasses (attractive disability, everyone has a fetish for broken eyes)
  • collects toys (unashamed about what makes me happy)
  • depression (humble)
  • insatiable appetite for just the junkiest, worst food imaginable (makes you look better by association, unless you eat shit food too, in which case we have something in common)
  • thick facial hair (makes me look intimidating to ward off threatening animals)
  • when face is shaved, i look like a large pink baby (makes me approachable to friendly animals and humans)
  • clingy (caring)
  • paranoid (cares about safety)
  • buys video games and never plays them (has disposable income)
  • unemployed (lots of time to spend with you)
  • physically strong
  • high aversion to violence
  • likes animals more than people (except you, probably)
  • you no longer have to attend anime conventions alone because i will also be there

Cons to being my Fucking Girlfriend

  • spends too much money on taco bell

“I wasn’t here on the first night, I mean, didn’t get here early” I said, and Harry smiled again.
“I know, I would never forget your eyes if I had seen it before…” he said, taking the wineglass out of my hand and placing it on the side of the bottle. I rolled my eyes, but this time Harry didn’t smile at that. “You have beautiful eyes, Zayn”
“What do you want from me, Harry?” I asked, watching him bring his face closer to mine. His eyes glittered and watched me closely.
“What do you want from me, Zayn?” He whispered, running his fingers over my face, making me shiver. Harry approached me and I closed my eyes, feeling his breath on my face. “You just have to say” he whispered, running his long fingers over my face.

  • Or the one where Zayn is a journalist in a Horror & Thriller Convention, Harry is a mysterious guest and people die.

Hello! So, this is the first fic I publish on AO3! This supposed to be part of Sub Harry Fic Fest but I couldn’t/wanted finish at time, so I’m posting it now! Please feel free to let me know what you’re thinking about it! I’ll update everyday (or week maybe?)… The photos aren’t mine, so credit to the owners! I think that’s it… Thank you!

Hey Angel! <3 I'm going attending this huge party this Saturday, and I know that there is going to be a really fine dude there. I dont know him, and have only seen him on social media. How do I grab his attention and make him notice me, and how am I going to make him approach me/ I build up the courage to approach him? Love!

i find making eye contact with him for a few seconds, smiling, and looking away works well. but if he doesn’t approach just walk up to him and start a convo. start with simple small talk. i find once you get your foot in the door and actually start the convo, it’s not as nerve-racking; especially if you guys end up having chemistry. don’t let him intimidate you, he’s a person, just like you. don’t put him on a pedestal.

I wear glasses.

Which seems to be something no one on this blog expects of me. Because wearing glasses has connotations of ‘innocence’.

But that is precisely why I enjoy wearing them. I instantly become a wolf in sheep’s clothing, someone no one expects anything bad from. They make me approachable, intelligent looking, even a little 'cute’ and it definitely attracts a lot of attention from the opposite sex.

They also mask my eyes ever so slightly. Which works wonders in displaying emotions I’m not feeling with cold, dead eyes that people cannot see so easily.

I am thankful for the glasses I have to wear. They work wonders in making me look approachable and innocent. No one expects the worst from the pure, intelligent and 'cute’ one with the glasses.
