make new things and think about them

Dragon Quest 1 was much shorter than I was expecting.

This has got to be one of the most straight forward RPGs I’ve played in a while, and I don’t mean that in a bad way at all.

The DQ series in general has added so many staples to the RPG genre that it’s scary to think of what it’d be without them alongside FF, and one of the things I have a habit of saying about them despite all the ‘new and incredible’ features they’ve incorporated over the years is that DQ always and repeatedly shows that simple isn’t a bad thing. That simple can make the games accessible and fun. And I’d say this is one of the first instances of Enix proving that. (Or should I point attention towards Chunsoft for deving this, as they helped pave the way other devs like Level5 would continue for the series)

Whether from technical limitations, or avoiding overextending themselves, the game seems to bend over backwards to AVOID straying from the main goal.

Save the princess, build a bridge (with 3 artifacts, only one of which needs an additional item to attain) defeat the Dracolord.

It’s pretty sweet to see how focused the game remains.

This spills over into the rest of the design, for better or worse in some areas, and overall made the game feel charming in it’s simplicity.

One party member, few weapons, few armor pieces, TWO accessories, ONE optional dungeon with a single reward, ONE hidden piece of equipment that you could ‘maybe’ call a side quest due to how the npcs talk of it.

It’s incredible to see how big an adventure this is when not only are there so few parts, but there isn’t artificial filler dragging those parts along either. Each was given attention and the end result is better for it.

It’s just fun.

Simple and fun.

Hello! I love your work, and need your help. I am writing a novel, and I want to do it from multiple perspectives. The problem is... one of the characters I want to focus on is physically incapable of moving. And I don't mean they can't walk or anything, I mean they are a plant who is incapable of moving. How can I make their perspective interesting?

I can definitely see where you’re having trouble with this. (Also, I believe you win the new award for most interesting ask!) Limited mobility and being…well, a plant can limit what there is to talk about. So, try these things!

1) Give the plant an interesting philosophy. If they can’t go any where or do much, it gives the character quite a lot of time for thinking about things and observing the world around them. Talk about how they view anything really as they watch the setting near them. Nearly any event can be given a symbolic purpose in this way.

2) Explain the setting in depth. Since they can’t move, your character is going to be very familiar with minute details and changes of the setting. You can use this time to describe beauty or decay or growth for whatever symbolic reason you may need to.

3) Give them a unique tone. If you give them a specific voice that’s significantly different from the other characters in your story, then things will be more interesting because they’ll be more unique. Give them a voice that you wouldn’t normally see with the rest of the cast to make them stand out even more (this could be something old fashioned and wizened to something extremely colloquial and full of slang to a mixture of the two).

Did you go to art school/ Are you in art school I just started today and I'm very scared

Hello!! I actually just started studying for an arts degree in uni myself last year actually!

I think it’s okay and super normal to be afraid at first. There’s always lots going on in the beginning of school (like making new friends) and I think it just means that you really care about doing well and that’s a really good thing!

A couple of things that worked really well for me in school:

-Putting in extra effort in my work (e.g. extra research, doing sketches on train rides outside of class sessions)

-Recording my progress (e.g. taking photos of your work, doing reflections occasionally about what you can improve on)

-Set goals and a vision (and prioritize)

-Turning up for classes (and also knowing when you should skip them so that you get maximum rest and not miss something incredibly important)

-If you know you procrastinate (and will), factor procrastination into project hours. Procrastinate the heck out of that 1-2 hours so that you’re super happy and channel it into your assignments. A good mood is always important! (I procrastinate alot :’) )

-THE MOST IMPORTANT: Allowing yourself to get enough rest!

(I usually only pull all-nighters in the last week of my semester or right before a long break. It’s something that is actually quite hard to do when you are swept up in assignments, but sometimes a productive, well-rested 2 hours is much more effective than a sleepy 5 hours.

In one particular sem, I pulled a crazy amount of all-nighters and didn’t sleep for days at a time because I constantly felt that my works were imperfect and the pressure to keep working at it. I felt like I wanted to crawl into my bed and live there forever after that (;u;) )

I feel that:

Art is not about a sprint! It’s about who lives longer to be able to experience and share more happiness! :)

These are some of the things that worked for me so far and might not work for you or relate very well, but I sure hope they’ll help you feel abit better at least!

School is a good time to get to know friends who love art too! I hope you find someone who can connect well with you if you’re in an unfamiliar environment! It’s always better to suffer together www

GOOD LUCK FOR SCHOOL! Let’s both do our best!!!

alieraah  asked:

saw your new QnA and got me thinking about the origin of gem weapons. It's a little weird that, of all things, gems can summon a weapon that is unique to them. Why a weapon? Given that gems are basically AI, obviously its programmed in. But wouldn't it then make sense for only the soldiers, the quartz, to be able to summon weapons? Why make a pearl capable of summoning a spear?

Well, keep in mind that weapon is a blanket term here. We’ve already seen two Gem “Weapons” that aren’t weapons at all, that being Rose’s shield and Jasper’s helmet. They can both be used as weapons, but fundamentally they are not. Also keep in mind that the current hierarchy of Homeworld was likely imposed by the Diamonds, and is not the original intention.

Maybe each Gem can summon an object that in some way represents them, and most of the ones that we’ve seen have a weapon because they live in a time of conflict. Or maybe the intention was that each Gem be able to defend itself should it ever need to, and so they are actually defensive weapons akin to the sidearms carried by the characters in Star Trek: considered a necessary evil that should only be used as a last resort.

I'm sad for the finale because it's gonna end but I'm happy for the finale because it's gonna end! It's the end of a really incredible thing that I've used as a sort of hand hold? For a really long time but it's evolving and turning into something new with new characters and a new world and I'm so excited to see what's gonna happen but I'm also scared a little bit. But mostly excited.

oh god i feel you like justin said a bit ago it’s just so surreal that the character’s stories are actually ending because dnd just doesn’t end it’s its own world and yet this is it for them and to think i won’t be able to make fun of whatever shitty thing mags does every other week is so weird and i’m honestly crying a bit thinking about it but yeah whatever is to come from the boys is gonna be good, it’s gonna be a bit wild as they try out their new shoes it’s gonna be a ride and i trust them

On fantrolls/fan kids

Idk about the other mods but I do not mind oc requests. I however do not want them to become the only thing that gets done on here. so I’ll make 2 choices to go with

1. we have a open times for you to request ocs. we’ll take x number of oc requests at a time on certain days or something

2. I or one of the other mods can make a new blog just for ocs.

I’ll talk it over with the other mods when I get the chance. in the mean time however you see fit you may tell us what you think about this. but until we have this figured out (at least for me) I’m gonna say ocs on hold.

Things to do instead of thinking about that gross boy:

-Take a bath. With candles and a book and a face mask

-Look for a new show on Netflix

-Watch videos of happy babies (or happy puppies. or kittens)

-Paint your nails

-Do that thing you’ve been procrastinating for hours

-Reorganize your room

-Find new music, make a new playlist

-Pet your cat or dog. Or your friend’s cat or dog. Or your neighbor’s cat or dog

-DIY a hair mask or a sugar scrub (I can write up some recipes if anybody wants them!!)

-Call your mom

-Sing and dance around your room to some Rihanna (or another singer that makes you feel like a boss ass bitch)

-Do some yoga

things I’ve learned this year:
  1. Being kind is always worth it. Compliment a stranger’s sweater, bring your neighbor their mail, pick flowers for your mom.
  2. If you want to do something, don’t be afraid to do it alone. You can make new friends along the way.
  3. Never underestimate the importance of late night talks with new friends. They’re good for the soul.
  4. Speaking of, don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Tell people what’s going on in your life. Your friends want to hear it.
  5. It’s okay to let people help you.
  6. Always do a little bit more than expected.
  7. It’s okay to say no.
  8. But if something interests you even a little, say yes.
  9. You can have a conversation with anyone if you ask about their pets or their favorite show on Netflix.
  10. Text old friends when you think of that one really funny thing that happened. Even if you haven’t talked in years, it will make them smile.
  11. Making people happy makes you happy. Be kind. Be thoughtful. It will all come back around in the end.
how the signs start a conversation

check mercury

aries: boldly ~ aries will come out of nowhere with something to talk about, the conversation will usually be short and quick but full of enthusiasm or new ideas.

taurus: slowly ~ taurus take their time starting conversations mainly because they like to think things over. their practical nature tends to make people listen to them more as a result.

gemini: sporadically ~ much like aries, geminis like to start a conversation randomly and quickly, they often interrupt others because their thoughts are so scattered.

cancer: easily ~ cancers tend to ease into conversations, often beginning with formalities and polite small talk before getting to the main point. they usually are very thoughtful.

leo: loudly ~ regardless of the volume of their voice, a leo’s authority makes it easy for them to be heard. they use creativity and warmth to win the attention of others while also standing out.

virgo: orderly ~ virgos tend to avoid being flashy but still appreciate their intellect being acknowledged. they control conversations by focusing on little details or planning what they have to say.

libra: smoothly ~ libras are diplomatic when it comes to talking and try to please everyone with fair intellect. their charm gets them a large audience but they can seem like a perfectionist with the rants and tangents they go on.

scorpio: urgently ~ scorpios aren’t the most talkative sign but when they want to talk, they try their hardest to get straight to the point. they enjoy observing and discussing more deeper matters.

sagittarius: optimistically ~ they enjoy looking at the big picture and don’t care too much about little details or organization. they tend to have flaws in their arguments due to their scattered thinking, but their enthusiasm can convince many.

capricorn: methodically ~ capricorns tend to start talking slowly, mainly because they need to organize and structure their thoughts. they tend to be skeptical and authoritative.

aquarius: quietly ~ although they enjoy breaking the rules, aquarius tend to quietly slip into conversations without being flashy. they enjoy arguing and often win due to their intellect. this can cause them to push their ideas on others, giving them a subtle authoritative demeanor.

pisces: softly ~ pisces aren’t too concerned with details but will be good listeners. this results in them seamlessly entering conversations with indirect statements or the occasional rambling when they get the chance. they have a tendency to fib in order to avoid offending others.

⚡ How to Charge Objects ⚡

⚡  In witchcraft we talk about energy a lot, especially in the context of “charging” objects, or filling them with energy, whether personal or external, as the moving force behind magic and spells.

⚡  Old energy becomes stagnant and bleh. Kinda like old food in the fridge. You gotta clean that out of it, so it doesn’t make the new good you put in “stink” too. So cleanse first before you charge!

⚡  Think of it like batteries! Things lose their charges, and then they kinda feel useless. So you gotta plug it back in to its metaphysical roots.

⚡  there are many ways to charge objects:  ⚡

  • moonlight
  • sea water
  • moon water
  • sunlight
  • fire
  • wind
  • soil
  • planetary influence
  • electricity
  • and many more! almost anything you can come up with

⚡  You can even charge one object with another, like charging a coffee cup with a crystal before breakfast. The magical energy stored in the crystal will transfer to the coffee, and then you have charmed and charged your drink!

⚡  When new energy is introduced to an object with correspondences, and it sits in there, it takes on those new properties of itself and

Regular water (no corres) + sunlight = sun water, water that has taken on the magical properties of the sun.

Amethyst (healing) + moonlight = boosts the existing healing properties of the amethyst, and has moons magical properties too

⚡  You can charge almost any object, with anything that has an energy.

Ohmygosh SO many of the tags on that post of mine are things along the lines of ‘I used to have a Sonic OC’ ‘maybe I can use them’ or ‘I haven’t thought about my OCs in years’ and things to that effect.

SEE? THIS. THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT! Look around you! Look at how many people are suddenly thinking about the OCs they made when they first got into Sonic and it’s not necessarily with shame and revulsion… it’s suddenly with NEW APPRECIATION. All these people who had OCs, once upon a time, but who probably put them aside out of shame because of the stigma surrounding it.

Now SEGA has said ‘Hey! No, that’s okay! Your OCs are valid and awesome! Make them! They can do what you always dreamed of and help Sonic save the world! They’re canon! They’re in the story! They’re important!’

And suddenly all these fans are rising from the depths, shedding the shame and embarrassment and thinking ‘Maybe that OC is okay after all..?’and ‘I should revamp them and try again…’

THIS is how it’s going to change things! THIS is why it’s important! THIS is what I’m so thankful to SEGA for!

So, again and again, thank you, SEGA. For giving us the one thing the Sonic fandom has needed for years.

Acknowledgement that this is 100% acceptable and okay. ♥

don’t think about:

  • dan and phil looking for their new place together and making that decision together for the third time
  • them deciding together which things should be left behind or gotten rid of
  • them sitting down and packing up their rooms together, finding little trinkets and reminiscing about the past
  • them finding pictures from old conventions and meetups and thinking about how far they’ve come because they used to only have a few people show up to see them and now they have to limit how many people they can meet
  • them packing up items from their various tatinof shows and thinking about how far they have come over the past few years and that they did it all together
  • dan and phil finally moving all of those boxes and items into a truck to be sent off to their new place
  • dan and phil closing the door to their flat for the last time and standing outside on the curb, holding hands, and saying goodbye to the place they called home for 5 years
  • them knowing that they have so much more to look forward to at this next place and how they’re going to do even bigger and better things in the coming years
Mental illness mostly caused by life events not genetics, argue psychologists
Mental illness is largely caused by social crises such as unemployment or childhood abuse and too much money is spent researching genetic and biological factors, psychologists have warned.

[W]hile there has been some success in uncovering genes which make people more susceptible to various disorders, specialists say that the true causes of depression and anxiety are from life events and environment, and research should be directed towards understanding the everyday triggers.

This should come as a surprise to no one. Genes don’t just express themselves without an adequate environment for their expression. If there’s a set of genes that, for example, reduce serotonin production in response to stress, there’s almost nothing you can do about the gene, but you can remove the source of stress.

I think one reason psychologists have refused to accept this position (it isn’t new, or even that extreme, although it is radical in the sense of “getting to the root of things”) is that it demands an analysis of the social conditions that lead to mental illness. In addition, the corollary of “mental illness has social causes” is “society can and must be changed”. Most psychologists have no interest in analyzing society, let alone asking for it to be changed (most of them make good money just handing out prescriptions). If you can blame DNA, or the human brain, you never have to step outside of your patient or even recognize that they actually exist in the social world.

What kind of friend are you?

Our 11th house rules friends, groups and communities. Planets and signs there show how you are in front of your friends and in a group. It also show the kind of friends do you feel attracted to!

Therefore, they’re the counselor friend™ or the emo one. In fact, they may remember all their friends’ birthdays but not what they have said 10 minutes ago. These people seek for friends as sensitive and helpful as they are!

☉ Sun in the 11th house is the kind of people whose main focus is on their social life. These people tend to be natural leaders and are very popular. Their friends shape their identity the most. For this people, you are who you’re friends with.

☽ Moon in the 11th house is the kind of people that feel easily attacked if they find someone gossiping abourt their friends. These people have a rough time separating their emotions from their friends’ actions or emotions. They’re easily hurt by them and tend to be overdramatizers. Their emotions could be aligned with a group’s emotion (for example, if your classmates are all angry at a teacher, these people may get angry with that teacher too, not because they have a reason to get angry, but they feel the atmosphere and imitates it unconsciously).

☿ Mercury in the 11th house is the kind of people that is constantly airing their opinions and knowledge. They seem to know everything, or at least they’ll act like it. They update their friends with all the news and gossips, and pretend the same from them. They’re the brain of the group.

♀ Venus in the 11th house is the kind of people that need peace in their group of friends and try to get along with everyone. These people may feel really stressed out if there’s problems in their main group. They have a way with words and know how to talk to each person. They might become known for their relatiosnhips.

♂ Mars in the 11th house is the kind of people that seem to be angry with everyone. They have troubles making enduring relationships and tends to have a lot of frenemie relationships. On the other hand, they can focus all their energy on defending their friends and fight anyone who threatens them and their friendship.

♃ Jupiter in the 11th house is the kind of people who weirdly get along with EVERYONE and seem to have friends around the world. They expand themselves through friendships and new people. However, they can become inconsiderate of that that are less socially savy (i.e that obnoxious kid that is constantly telling you to dance in a party).

♄ Saturn in the 11th house is the kind of people that keep friends forever but have a hard time getting friends at first. They get disappointed when their need of stability isn’t fullfil by their friends. Can be very critical over people and, therefore, damaging their relationship. Anyway, they want the best for their friends and when they find the right people, they’ll be the most loyal friends ever.

♅ Uranus in the 11th house is the kind of people that constantly change friends in order to get new experience. They like people who have something new to offer and have strange interests. However, they may reject people that don’t share the same moral values and politic view as them. They might reject urban tribes and may want to start their own club/group.

♆ Neptune in the 11th house is the kind of people who put their friends at the top. Their friends are not bad, they’re not hurting them. They’re perfect and, of course, better than the person with this placements. People tend to reflect themselves in this person, put on them high expectatives and and mispercieve them. People with this placements tend to have struggles with letting people walk over them. However, they’re very comforting and intuitive.

♇ Pluto in the 11th house is the kind of people that, like Uranus, constantly change friends. They may have trust issues and, therefore, have a hard time forming durable bonds and getting along with groups. When they finally trust the other person, the bonds are intensily strong.

Fishing: digital painting walkthrough

So I got a question on anon asking me about my drawing coloring process, and unfortunately I accidentally deleted it, because I have clumsy fingers on mobile.

Thank you so much for your interest, I’m really honored! I will try and give a brief overview of my drawing process, and hope this is helpful or useful to you! I just started experimenting with Photoshop last summer around July, so I’m definitely not the most experienced, I’m still learning a lot!

I’m going to be using this drawing of Lapis, because it’s one of my favorite pieces and it is more detailed than my average drawing:

This drawing was inspired by the episode “Alone At Sea”, where I wanted to illustrate this concept:

This was my main reference, but I also throughout, used a lot of google images of water and colorful fish.

Sketch: My canvas size was 3000 px wide and 2000 px high. I tend to sketch with the standard brushes and I actually have like 2 layers of sketches (one for basic shapes/sizes of things, then one for rough details and things).

Lineart + base coloring: I add lineart, usually px size 6-8, with the pencil brush. I then add base colors, using the default solid brush. Usually they are the generic color I’m going for. I try not to get too stressed about the base colors because I usually cover most of them up.

Primary highlights/light sources: It gets more interesting once you establish primary light sources, so where the main light source is coming from, as well as reflections of things. I use a larger brush and add these on new layers, set to either overlay or screen or pin light. So I wanted light to be shining through the water, making the color reflect on Lapis, which is how it works with real light.

Detail/color: I think this is the most fun part, where you choose colors to paint over. I think I painted this the way I normally use watercolor, which is combining a lot of complimentary and contrasting colors with varying amounts of saturation. It’s more complicated to explain that, but it’s a lot of eyeballing. For example, referring to the reddish colors, I tried spreading them around the drawing instead of having them just in one place. The reddish fish reflects around the water bubble, and the light is reflected on Lapis’s clothing as well.

Highlights: This makes your drawing really stand out - often at this stage, many layers are on ‘luminosity’, ‘screen’ or ‘overlay’. I also do this with the lineart layer as well, so there are not just harsh black lines, which can be distracting. There are also secondary light sources, such as at the back of Lapis’s head, because I felt like there was still not enough red-orange in the drawing.

Small white lines also make a big difference (such as those on the bubble, and on the edges of her jacket/in her hair).

I later went and adjusted the color balance a bit, as well as increased the contrast so some more areas would appear darker and it was a bit less green in color.

That is kind of the overview! I hope this was helpful at all, or at least interesting! If you have any more questions I would be happy to answer, I enjoy rambling. Sorry if this was a bit long!

Thank you so much for taking an interest!

Humans in Space theory.

Humans can warp probability.

I read this book, a hard sci fi novel in high school. Fucked if I can remember the title but the basic premise was that there was a brain-nanite thing that you could inhale and it would change things. Also the Aliens enclosed the whole solar system in some sort of shield. Nothing in, nothing out.

There was a woman who was part of an experiment in probability. Her brain-mod would allow her to not only predict, but alter the ‘up’ or ‘down’ spin of some sort of ion or another that was completely random.

But think about it. Humans are against ALL ODDS the craziest, most intelligent, cruelest, most compassionate, gentlest, harshest beings. There’s no predicting a human because we don’t actually follow the universal laws of probability. To attempt to graph our behavior patterns in a sane quantifiable manner leaves you a little nuts. We perservere, survive. We have NO CHILL when it comes to some things, and are extremely lax about others. We can’t really be predicted, because we’re always altering our realities.

Even our greatest heroes face ‘impossible’ odds and survive. Especially, even. A human is at their shining best when the entire universe is in a point of flux. When choices become the most important things we have. We stare into the blackness between the stars and wonder. Hope. Dream. Wish. We change energy with a thought. We reach out and touch not just things but people, hearts, minds.

Aliens just watch us and are either baffled, indulgent, or terrified. We’re tiny beings in the grand scheme. Numerous but fragile. Perfectly adapted to hostile environs. We have taken aggressive adaptation to the point of modifying our bodies for our environments synthetically. We can take a situation from ‘we’re all gonna die’ to ‘holy shit we lived’ with just one flash of genius. We can stare into the face of danger and smile. We live for those life or death adrenaline scenarios. Some of us have made entire careers out of being batshit crazy.

Humans warp probability.

It’s technically classed as a psi ability in some alien lexicons, but one that’s passive. There’s various grades of it too. Captain Kirk, for instance, is like ‘Let’s make some noise’ and they all survive. Han Solo says ‘Never tell me the odds!”. Arthur Dent reaches into a bag and produces the question that fits the answer. River Tam turns the tide of battle with a mental flip of a switch. Samantha Carter again and again builds doorways between stars, sometimes with nothing more than her wits and the equivalent of a paperclip and tinfoil. Jane Foster survives longer than anyone else ever has with the literal force of chaos flowing through her veins. If she wasn’t human, she’d never have lived long enough to save her world.

These are all people who are extraordinary, who through their sheer humanity have built new futures.

Aliens can’t quanitfy us because we’re chaos in motion. Rogue physics, the edges of cosmic constants. Variables with no fixed value. We make choices, and reach out and touch other beings, and we take logic and probability and the most likely outcome of things and twist them into new shapes. It’s more than just creative thinking, high-stakes adaptation, or even empathy.

A human can literally even the odds.

That’s why alien crews like keeping humans around. We’re crazy and unpredictable and able to survive just about anything. We’re loyal for the most part, to love or money or Crew. Once a human decides that you’re theirs, they will literally warp the universal constants for their crew.

That’s our alien superpower, I think.

a-not-so-clever-man  asked:

Someone important to me believes that something I wrote is based off of them and it as been hurting our relationship, how do I get them to know that it's not them?

I don’t know. I don’t think it’s possible to persuade people that you didn’t write about them. There is one long-ago short story of mine in which every former girlfriend of mine saw herself reflected, and each of them made a point of telling me that she had read it (I think they were flattered) and obviously the person in it was her, and I realised that nothing I could ever say about the story would change anybody’s mind.

That’s because it’s almost impossible to explain to anybody who hasn’t done it that the way we make fiction is a sort of composting process in which things we see and feel and experience and think and imagine are put into our minds and then rot down into a black compost, in which new things grow. Or for that matter that you can steal the way that one person plays with their hair and the way another person sighs and always turns up late and grow a third person who isn’t either of them out of it.

So you can tell them it’s not them in your fiction. But they will still believe what they will. Perhaps instead you should just work on the relationship, and if they are worried about issues of privacy (or whatever) being compromised by what you write, tell them you must have done it without realising, and will do your best to make sure they aren’t in any more stories of yours, even unwittingly.

I hope this helps. (You will probably find a lot more wisdom than this in the comments or the reblogs.)

it’s such a strange thing that we care about what we look like. like have you ever just considered that cavemen didn’t have mirrors or cameras or anything to see themselves up close with and they didn’t even care about what they looked like? we literally come from the universe, all of us, and we have most of the same basic parts/appearance but otherwise we look different. our skin and eye colours change based on where we live to protect us from harm and ours cells join together different to give us our other differences in appearance. we’re just built the way we are to survive as every other animal is. when did we go from recognizing our bodies for their health and grace and strength and resiliency to picking them apart and criticizing them and starving ourselves to eliminate parts of them and comparing them to others? when money became the vital part of owning anything and therefore critiquing bodies and selling products to combat these new flaws was a new marketing technique to make tons of it. they made something so unimportant a crucial part of life and i think it’s pure bullshit. don’t even just love your body but realize that its appearance is actually such a stupid thing to waste your energy caring about.
