There is no comic I recommend more often or more emphatically than Brubaker, Rucka and Lark's Gotham Central. It is easily one of the best superhero comics of the last twenty years–probably one of the best superhero comics ever. It is thrillingly written, gorgeously drawn, and emotionally resonant–and on top of this? Its treatment of gender, race, and sexuality isn’t just nuanced, but central to the storyline.

The first thing you need to know is that it isn’t really a superhero story. Gotham Central is about the Gotham City Police Department in general, the Major Crimes Unit in particular–caped characters pop up here and there, but the series is mostly about mopping up after them. It’s an ensemble story, and every single character is memorable, but the true protagonist and beating heart of the story is Renee Montoya. Half a Life, the comic’s second arc, deals with her outing as a lesbian to the GCPD–and if her story had stopped there, it would have been fantastic. Half a Life deals with professional discrimination, family tension, and the reality of being a lesbian woman of color–in a memorable scene, Renee confronts Maggie Sawyer, her white lesbian boss, for assuming their experiences are identical. But her story doesn't stop there. Renee’s arc goes on to deal with killing in the line of duty, confronting police corruption, the loss of friends on the force, and her own predilection for violence. It’s an incredible lesson in how to lead a female character down a dark path the right way–it’s never exploitative, it’s never gross, it’s never because of her gender or sexuality. It’s never cheap. Renee’s is the kind of hard-bitten, morally thorny sojourn reserved almost entirely for male characters.

But even apart from Renee, Gotham Central is tremendous. Soft Targets, the focus of the second volume, is one of my favorite Joker arcs ever, and I have serious Joker fatigue. Nature, a single issue story, gives Poison Ivy a personality beyond Sexy Plant Lady. Gotham Central even made me briefly care about the shitshow that was Infinite Crisis. I don’t even really like police procedurals! It’s just that goddamn good.

(So you want to get into comics?)

Fic Recs #3

I thought I had already done three of these, guys! I guess I was wrong… If I am wrong, please let me know.

TO THE FIC.

Part 1, Part 2

In Your Eyes by @yellowflicker09011996 and @honorthedeadbyfighting - GUYS. This fic is amazing! Felicity is blind, but aside from that and a friendship with Tommy, it seems like the universe is the same to the Arrowverse. I’m loving this story so far and can’t wait to see where it goes!

And Above, The Vaulted Sky by @yellowflicker09011996 - I seriously can’t get enough of this fic! It’s so amazing. The writing is great, the story is so compelling, and I’m impatient for every single update! Felicity is the Spider - an integral part of the League of Assassins - but she escapes and teams up with Oliver to defeat her enemies and attain permanent freedom. Certain people - *cough* Amanda Waller - want her as an asset.

Only Lovers Left Alive by @yellowflicker09011996 - Can you guys tell I’m obsessed with Annie? Because I really, really am right now! Also, I’ve recced this fic before but I DON’T CARE. It’s seriously amazing! If you know the movie, you can guess what the plot is, but let me tell you, you really can’t comprehend the breadth of beauty and emotion and sorrow that Annie is capturing in this story. I’m consistently brought to tears - which is a good thing for me. READ IT NOW.

Chase the Light by @ohemgeeitscoley - THIS IS FLOMMY. It’s literally the ONLY Flommy fic I’m reading. Basically, Felicity finds out her long-time boyfriend is married right before she was going to take him home for Hanukkah. Tommy steps up to go with her as her fake boyfriend. The problem is, they’re both totally in love with each other and the other has no idea.

Our love will never fade away (I’ll bear your mark on my skin for eternity) by @charlie-leau - (Anyone have her Tumblr?) I’m usually not into soulmate AUs. At least, not multi-chapter ones. But, this one is so amazing! Soulmates have matching marks that bond them. When Felicity is 16, a private investigator finds her and tells her that her soulmate’s family has deemed her unsuitable for their son and they want her to take the Med - something that will make her Mark disappear and muffle the bond if she takes it every day. The man also says her soulmate wants what’s best for his family. Four years later, Felicity moves to Starling City and meets Oliver Queen at a coffee shop.

Jerry the EA by @dettiot - Obviously, Mel is amazing. She has Love is Red, Little Flowers of Eloquence, the Core Curriculum series… All FABULOUS. But, I have a special place in my heart for Jerry the EA who should totally get more screen time.

Ninja Warrior Hacker Goddess by @acheaptrickandacheesyoneline - I fell in love with this fic before I even knew Megan, and it made me so happy when I figured out she wrote it! In Ivy Town, our favorite couple watches American Ninja Warrior. It inspires Felicity to up her workout game. (Also, keep an eye on Megan! She’s writing an Indiana Jones AU and collaborating with @andcreation on a Smoaking Billionaires fic. GET READY, GUYS.)

The Way It Was Supposed to Be by @hannasus - Guys, I generally don’t like amnesia fics. I don’t really know why. But I LOVE THIS ONE. Felicity is kidnapped the night before her wedding to Oliver and the team is going crazy trying to find her. When they do, she’s not the Felicity Smoak they all know and love. I was so hesitant about this because amnesia, but it’s one of my favorite fics at the moment! Read it!

She Refused to be a Swooner by @suchaprettypoison - (Anyone have her Tumblr?) Felicity and Oliver meet in the public restroom at a baseball game. She’s snarky. He’s intrigued. In this ‘verse, Felicity’s father didn’t leave and had much more influence on her life. SO funny and sweet and romantic.

Going Mental by @thatmasquedgirl - It’s an Arrow Mentalist AU! I’ve never watched the Mentalist (I know enough general info to get by), and it hasn’t hindered my enjoyment of this fic at all. Felicity is sassy and snarky but wounded, Oliver can’t really explain why he likes her so much. The synopsis is wonderful: “One of these days, she might actually be the death of him, but what a way to go. Snapshots in the lives of Oliver Queen, head of the Major Crimes Unit of the California Bureau of Investigation, and his partner Felicity Smoak, his best friend and the bane of his existence.”

Give Him Your Heart (he will give you his) by @alexiablackbriar13 - PUPPY!OLIVER. Oliver gets whammied by a meta and turned into the animal that best reflects his soul: a Husky puppy. It is equally fluffy and adorable and heartbreaking and sad because Oliver has a lot of Bad Feelings and puppies aren’t really equipped to deal with them.

Blind Item by @darlinginmyway - Oliver and Felicity are best friends. Once day, he realizes how horrible of a friend he is and that he’s madly in love with Felicity Smoak. Now he just has to change his ways and earn her love, all while opening a restaurant with Tommy and Digg. (Slade is a chef! I love Slade.) This fic is funny, sweet, sassy, and absolutely worth reading!

Truthfully Lying by @witchwithwifi - (is this the right blog?) Felicity gets into Starling City Boarding School on a full scholarship. She just wants to learn and keep her head down. Oliver Queen and Tommy Merlyn have other plans. I’m a SUCKER for a good boarding school AU and there just aren’t a lot of them in this fandom!

Okay, that’s all for now! HAPPY READING, EVERYONE! If anyone wants to recommend me some awesome fanfiction, please feel free. I’m always ready to read more fic.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Lizard’s attack on Manhattan and the death of Captain George Stacy, of New York City Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. Stacy was a decorated police veteran who left behind a loving wife and four children. In this Daily Bugle exclusive we spoke with the Stacy family, Helen, who lost a heroic husband that day, and Gwen, Phillip, Howard, and Simon, who lost their father.

Daily Bugle: Helen, is this a hard anniversary to commemorate?

Helen Stacy: It’s hard to believe George died a year ago. That night, that call, it still hurts as if it happened five seconds ago.

DB: Does your family take any solace that Curt Connors will spend the rest of his life in prison?

Helen Stacy: I think that would have mattered much more to George, just to know Connors is paying for his crimes. He cared very deeply about the law and about justice.

DB: Gwen, your graduation from Midtown Science High School is coming up and you are the valedictorian. How proud would your father have been?

Gwen Stacy: Very proud, I’m sure. (fighting back tears) And nervous for me, and concerned because he wouldn’t want me to be scared. And excited for my future.

DB: Do you ever have any regrets that Spider-Man and your father saved the city but only one of them walked away that night?

Gwen Stacy: I think… (long pause) I think both of them did what they thought needed to be done without regard to the risk. I think both of them were heroes that night. I regret that my dad died, but not at the expense of anyone else.

DB: What about the kids? What do your classmates say about that night?

Simon Stacy: All my friends think that Spidey was totally cool, but that my dad was the coolest!

TNT’s Hit Series Major Crimes to Tackle Tough New Cases

When Season 4 Launches in June

Top 10 Basic Cable Drama Returns Monday, June 8, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Television’s favorite squad of detectives will be back on the case this summer when TNT’s hit drama Major Crimes returns for its fourth season. One of basic cable’s Top 10 series, Oscar® and Emmy® nominee Mary McDonnell heads the extraordinary ensemble cast that includes G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Kearran Giovanni, Graham Patrick Martin and Jonathan Del Arco, along with Robert Gossett. Major Crimes is set to launch its fourth season on Monday, June 8, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). It will be followed by the return of TNT’s hit crime-drama Murder in the First.

In 2014, Major Crimes ranked as one of basic cable’s Top 10 series for the third consecutive year. The series averaged more than 8.2 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery in its third season, with 2.5 million adults 18-49 and 1.9 million adults 25-54, all on par with the prior season’s performance. Overall, the show reached an average of 11.6 million viewers per episode across TNT’s linear, VOD, online and mobile platforms.

Major Crimes focuses on how the American justice system approaches the art of the deals as law enforcement officers and prosecutors work together to score a conviction. In the series, McDonnell stars as Los Angeles Police Captain Sharon Raydor, who heads up a special squad within the LAPD that deals with high-profile or particularly sensitive crimes. Her team of investigators includes G.W. Bailey as Lieutenant Provenza, Tony Denison as Lieutenant Andy Flynn, Michael Paul Chan as Lieutenant Mike Tao, Raymond Cruz as Detective Julio Sanchez, Kearran Giovanni as Detective Amy Sykes and Phillip P. Keene as tech expert Buzz Watson. Robert Gossett plays Assistant Chief Russell Taylor, Raydor’s boss, while Jonathan Del Arco plays Dr. Morales, the medical examiner. Graham Patrick Martin plays Rusty Beck, a formerly homeless teen who has been adopted by Raydor.

In addition to the main cast, Major Crimes features recurring appearances by Jon Tenney as Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Bureau Fritz Howard, Ransford Doherty as Coroner’s Investigator Kendall, Kathe Mazur as DDA Andrea Hobbs, Malcolm-Jamal Warner as Lt. Chuck Cooper and Bill Brochtrup as Rusty’s therapist, Dr. Joe Bowman. Also set to return this season is guest star Tom Berenger as Jack Raydor, Capt. Raydor’s estranged husband.

This season on Major Crimes, the division will be called upon to investigate a complicated string of home burglaries, a case involving a dead body left in the trunk of a car that is wrecked during a high-speed chase and a gangland shooting case involving an 11-year-old witness. During his first drive-along as a Reserve Officer, Buzz Watson will be dragged into the latest Flynn and Provenza investigative debacle after a dead body in a bathtub threatens an extremely expensive wedding. And Sanchez will return to the Major Crimes unit, but struggle to rebuild relationships and trust with his fellow officers. Back at home, Sharon Raydor’s newly adopted son, Rusty, will discover a passion for journalism that tests his mother’s patience, and could threaten the prosecution of a confessed murderer.

Created by James Duff, Major Crimes is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television. Duff, Greer Shephard & Michael M. Robin, Rick Wallace, Adam Belanoff and Leo Geter serve as executive producers.

The masked vigilante Spider-Man has once again apprehended notorious bank-robber, Herman Schultz, nabbing the prison escapee yesterday afternoon during an attempted robbery at a diamond exchange in Midtown Manhattan.

Schultz managed to hold off the police for some time using his technologically advanced vibratory gauntlets that either emit dangerous pulse waves or have the unique singular power to throw cop cars hundreds of feet in the air (we’re guessing it’s the former).

After a brief skirmish that left several police vehicles heavily damaged, Spider-Man removed one of Schultz’s gauntlets and gave Schultz a taste of his own medicine, which in this case was a pulse wave right to the face.

Schultz had recently escaped from Ryker’s Island penitentiary where he was being held on bank robbery charges.  Detective Jean DeWolff of the Major Crimes Unit admitted the police thought Schultz had fled the city.

“The really sad thing about him is that he must be a brilliant engineer to create a weapon like this,” said DeWolff. “He could sell that technology and make billions, instead he chooses to rob a bank for what? A couple of grand? This guy is a stone cold dummy.”

A daring nighttime raid by Spider-Man on a nondescript townhouse in Greenwich Village led to the arrest of the reputed organized crime boss, The Big Man. Spider-Man, having conducted his own investigation and in another instance of his now all-too-common vigilantism, left the webbed-up gangster hanging from a lamp post, for the arrival of a surprised police squad.

But the biggest shock of all came when the mask of the Big Man was yanked off and the gangster was revealed to be Daily Bugle crime beat reporter Frederick Foswell! In a prepared statement, NYPD Major Crimes Unit Sergeant Stan Carter said, “Foswell confessed to his role as the organizing force behind the city’s recent surge in crime. He has not provided a motive for his actions.”

Daily Bugle Publisher and brilliant, stunning, generous philanthropist, J. Jonah Jameson issued a statement, “For the record, the Daily Bugle has been a proud institution in this great city for generations. We report the news, we don’t make ourselves a part of the story. Foswell’s a good writer. I look forward to reading his insider account of Ryker’s Island Penitentiary over the next twenty-five years to life.”

Frederick Foswell, the former Daily Bugle reporter unmasked as underworld boss “The Big Man” was found murdered yesterday in Ryker’s Island penitentiary. Correctional Authority officials stated that Foswell’s body was found in a storage closet adjacent to the commissary where he had been working.

Authorities refused to speculate on the cause of death but sources say it was severe blunt force trauma to the head. “Only a couple of prisoners have the strength to do that kind of damage,” an anonymous source said, “but they have alibis, or at least enough people willing to provide them alibis, that I don’t think we’ll ever know who killed Foswell.”

Detectives of the Major Crimes Unit stated on condition of anonymity that they were not surprised in the least that Foswell met a quick and grisly end, hinting that you don’t get to be “The Big Man” because people love you.

Police and New York City prosecutors expressed outrage with the state of security at Ryker’s, as Foswell had promised to reveal evidence of sweeping collusion between city workers and the criminal underworld pending a sweeter deal from the District Attorney’s office.

Ironically, Foswell’s plan to unite crime in New York by manipulating the organized crime families against each other is apparently being emulated by various power players in the criminal underground.

Despite the fun, innocent acronym, DUMBO, Brooklyn was the scene of an old-fashioned gun battle today when factions of the Russian mob and The Big Man’s gang escalated their ongoing war for control of the city’s organized crime, culminating in a dramatic shootout along Jay Street that left three dead and the police scrambling for answers.

Despite the tragic outcome, police found a silver lining as security camera footage captured the first visual confirmation of the reputed Big Man leaving the scene with his crew (the Enforcers). Police spokesman, Major Crimes Unit Sergeant Stan Carter, said the image would not be revealed to the general public until the department’s analysis of the footage was completed.

Sources indicate that the video footage confirmed the involvement of the Big Man’s Enforcers, including Fancy Dan Brito, Jackson Montana Brice and Raymond “The Ox” Bloch, all of whom were out on bail from previous criminal charges. The police identified the victims as Anatoly Melikov, Gennaty Panarin, and Evgeny Teryoshin, all reputed members of Alexsei Sytsevich’s Brighton Breach crew.
