main lawn

Actually you know what. Just don’t mow. Get rid of your lawnmower. Turn your whole yard into a wildflower field or an edible garden. Lawns are the invention of the upper class to show wealth through wasted plots of grass that is meticulously tended for no reason other than to be grass. It’s literally an empty plot of land they kept because they had so much money they didn’t need it to grow food. Not using a yard as just a yard is an act of rebellion.

One of the main industries still supporting lawns is chemical pest control companies, and they’re also responsible for the insecticides that crashed the bird populations in the 40s and 50s as well as a lot of what’s killing bees and butterflies now. The herbicides they produce specifically targets “bad” plants like dandelions, buttercups, and clovers, which are plants bees rely on for early spring feeding. Grass is just grass; it would be great for feeding small mammals if people would let it grow more than three inches, but they won’t.

So, yeah. Kill lawnmower culture. Plant some native flowers. Grow some vegetables and fruit trees. Put out bird feeders and bee sugar spots and homes for both. Be kind to bugs and birds and rabbits and opossums and whoever else might wander by. Make your neighborhood a lot more beautiful.

Listen…words happened. Lots of words. I hope this is what you wanted. Maybe you wanted something darker? And more…painful? I am working on being more angsty and pain-filled :D

Hot Thoughts

Neil slipped into his trainers without untying them around five in the morning. He was trying to be as silent as possible because everyone else in the dorm was still asleep. Regardless of when Neil went to sleep, his internal clock has him up at five am, every day. Technically, Neil had only fallen into bed at three after a night practice with Kevin and Andrew. Kevin was snoring in his bed across the room and Andrew was awake but hadn’t opened his eyes. Neil tried to be as stealthy as possible when he got out of bed, but there was no climbing down from bunk beds without waking the other person, especially not if they were a light sleeper. Andrew was so used to Neil slipping out of Fox Tower around 5:10 am, and running until he was tired enough to fall back into bed for a few hours before his 11 am Stats class, that he no longer started swearing at being woken up, he would just murmur, “phone on,” before pulling the covers over his head and going back to sleep.

Neil took the elevator all the way down in order to take the time to stretch and relish the protesting of his tired muscles. They had gone hard at night practice. Andrew was in an accommodating mood and had the two strikers running up and down the court like mad. He had even let Neil drive home so he could smoke in the passenger seat and look at Neil. Neil had given a mocking little, “Staring,” making Andrew blow smoke in his face. Kevin had started complaining in the backseat about the perils of smoking and what it would do to Andrew’s body. Andrew how will you continue to play exy if you can’t catch your breath? Kevin had finally asked, imploringly. Andrew was completely unimpressed and lit another cigarette, passing it to Neil, before turning up the radio to drown out Kevin’s protesting.

sign of the times (a riley matthews fic)

But she swallows the tightness in her throat, forces a small smile on her face and hangs up the graduation picture of her and her friends above her desk. Her heart tugs as she thinks of them all, scattered across the country. All off to find their own destinies. Her fingers ghost over her ribcage, the galaxy etched into her skin burning at the thought of them all. The pride that she often feels when she thinks of her friends comes crashing onto her like an ocean wave.

She ignores the bitter feeling of loneliness that follows it only moments later.

Chapter: 1 (Girl Meets New Beginnings)
Ships: Riley/Lucas (main romantic pairing), platonic Riley/Clique Six, Riley/Charlie, Riley/Dave & Riley/Asher
Word Count: 11k+

Notes: Well here it is friends, the first chapter of what will hopefully become my best work yet. I’m so excited for this fic and everything I plan to do with it and I hope you guys are excited too. Special shout out, as always to @friarlucas for editing and overall supporting this endeavor. Please enjoy and let me know what you think! Also, this fic takes place in the same canon verse as Maggie’s “Gravity on the Open Road” fic, you don’t need to read that fic to understand this one, although I highly recommend it, because it’s a wonderful fic!

Riley enters college under the complete and total assumption that she’s going to love it. She has no reason to think otherwise, especially after bidding all of her friends goodbye on their road trip across the country, and their wide-eyed and blinding smiles burned in her memory forever. They were all excited for the next chapter in their lives, and she was too. Of course she was nervous, but those nerves were overshadowed by something stronger, an anticipation and excitement of things to come.

So when she drudges across the main lawn of New York University, her backpack on her shoulder and duffle bag in hand, her parents bickering behind her and her younger brother by her side, a smile finds its way across her face. Things are going to be different – no friends, no Lucas, no dad as her teacher, but she has faith that it will be a good different.

Her room is a cramped double in the third floor corner of the largest freshman dorm, and her roommate merely nods at her when she first enters. While this dampens her spirits momentarily, she catches a glimpse of the New York streets below her window and realizes that things aren’t all bad. She’s Riley after all, always finding the good in otherwise unsatisfactory situations.

She won’t lie and say the less than pleasant living arrangements she finds herself in makes the goodbye she bids to her family hurt any less, but she plasters on her ever-present Riley Matthews smile and knows that things will get better in time.

Her roommate, as she learns over the next couple of hours is named Hannah, is a chemistry major and is not in college to make friends. That stings a little and Riley’s childish dream of being best friends (as best of friends as one can be with her true best friend across the country in California) with her college roommate immediately crumbles around her in a cloud of dust.

Edward slid the pot back into its space, letting out a deep sigh. He scraped the back of his hand over his forehead, probably sliding dirt all over face. But he liked this so much better than out on the main lawn. Standing up, the man turned and surveyed the work he’d put in. With another sigh, he leaned forward and patting the lettuce that was just starting to pop up. Turning, the man let out a startled gasp. “Fuck, you scared the living shit out of me.” Taking a deep breath, he held up his thumb and forefinger. “You were this close to getting hit with a spade.”

Long time, no see [ @lily-nordin ]

Melody walked along the main campus lawn, gladiator sandals making little noise as she balanced on the edge of the path, with one hand clutching an official looking clipboard. Her t-shirt showed clearly that she was a volunteer, heading towards the main area for residence halls to help with the moving in process, sunglasses pulled down over her eyes to shield them from the glare of the midday sun. As she walked, she smiled at the familiar faces and soaked up the surroundings that she had come to know intimately over the past four years, taking deep breaths in and grinning to herself as she let them out, thinking that finally, after an awful summer, she was home. Cabot Creek University had been her life for the last four years and she was continuing on as a graduate student because, if she was honest with herself, she didn’t want to leave and didn’t know what she would do if she did.

As she walked forward, she wasn’t expecting to see a very familiar face a little way in front of her. she did a hasty double take and pulled her glasses from over her eyes, planting them on the top of her head as she blinked in the light and wondered whether her often unreliable eyes were playing tricks on her… but the figure didn’t disappear, so Melody called out. “Lily Nordin?” she shouted, a little uncertainly, not wanting to look ridiculous if she was wrong about who was standing in front of her. Lily turned at Melody’s shout however, and Melody grinned widely at the girl who she hadn’t seen in over a year… or perhaps it had been longer. She bounded towards her old New York City friend and embraced her. They had partied hard and shopped until they quite literally dropped, bitching about their parents and getting up to no good and now… she was here. “Lily, what on earth are you doing here?” she asked, pulling back.

Aside from the whole vampire girlfriend thing, Laura is a normal college student. That sometimes involved running around and doing stupid things and getting hurt.

Sometimes, she thinks, Carmilla would probably rather tie her to a chair than have her go do something stupid. The other half of the time, she doesn’t seem to care.

What really annoys Laura is when Carmilla goes crazy over situations that really aren’t dangerous at all.
