magnet agency

Satellite SWARM to investigate Earth’s magnetic field in unprecedented detail.

These are European Space Agency satellites, launched on a four year mission  as part of their Earth observation program and designed to widen our understanding of every level of our magnetosphere and its origins deep in the fluid outer core. They are designed to study the different components of our protective anti-radiation shield: Magnetised crustal rocks, the mantle, outer core, ionosphere and oceans. Scientists hope to understand how these components interact to produce our planet’s magnetic sheath, while gleaning data useful to many Earth science disciplines.
