Beginner's Guide to Pendulums

⛤Okay, so I have been wanting to put out a post about pendulums based on how I was taught to use them by my aunt, a long-time pendulum diviner and dowser. This post is based solely on our traditions and beliefs. I am NOT telling anyone that this is the one and only way to work with pendulums. Please do what works for you. If these methods suit you, fantastic! If not, it’s okay. Alright, buckle your seat belts ‘cause here we go.

⛤So, you want to use a pendulum. Cool! First you have to get one. There are several ways to obtain a pendulum. You can buy one from a specialty shop (many new age and crystal shops sell them). You can buy one online from places like Etsy, Ebay, and other places. You can even make one. All you need is a string or chain and something to hang from it. It can be as simple as a needle stuck in a cork hanging from some thread (as my great grandmother did). You can also use a piece of jewelry, such as a necklace or a lanyard as a pendulum. Find, make or buy one that is suitable for you.

⛤Now that you have a pendulum, it’s time to clear/charge it. A very important step when using a pendulum is to cleanse it, especially if you bought one. A pendulum in a store, even an online store, has been touched by many people. People have probably touched it to look at it, shop employees have probably touched it when they were putting out to be bought. The seller from an online shop has certainly touched it. All of these people touching the pendulum that you just bought have left residual energies on it. These energies can affect the accuracy of the pendulum. So, you have to cleanse it. I recommend you cleanse your pendulum the same way you do any of your magickal tools. If it’s made from a crystal, you can cleanse it the same way you cleanse your crystals. If you don’t know how to cleanse your pendulum, I was taught to start with a prayer/incantation/chant. Write one that explains your intention just like you would to write a spell. Be specific in your writing. If you want to work with your spirit guides, say that. If you want to work with your higher self, say that. Be specific in the kind of spirits you want to work with. Do you want to work with ancestors? Spirit animals? Etc. If you want to work spirits aligned with light, be specific on the type of light. Anyway, after you have your prayer/incantation/chant written down, you can begin to cleanse your pendulum. The cleansing ritual/ceremony/process can be a elaborate as you deem fit. When I cleansed mine, I didn’t go very elaborate, but if you need to go for it. There are several ways you can use to cleanse your pendulum. 1st, smoke cleansing. Just as you would use sage to cleanse a room, you can use it to cleanse your pendulum. Light a bundle of dried sage, or sage incense. Pass your pendulum through the smoke and say your prayer/incantation/chant. Do this for as long as you think is necessary. 2nd, visualization. Hold your pendulum in your hand and visualize it being surrounded by a brilliant white light. Focus on the residual energies being driven away and cleansed from your pendulum. Say your prayer/incantation/chant while you do your visualization. I used this method to cleanse my pendulum. I visualized putting the pendulum in a stream of white light and letting the light flow over it like water, cleansing away the residual energies. 3rd, if your pendulum is made of crystal, any crystal cleansing techniques will work to cleanse it (i.e. burying it, putting it in running water, burying in salt, putting it with cleansing crystals, such as clear quartz and selenite, etc.). If you made your pendulum, you might not have to worry so much about cleansing and charging it because you made it and it’s already aligned with your energy. However, if you bought your pendulum, after you have cleansed it you need to charge it with your energy. You can do this by carrying it around with you in your pocket and asking small, mundane questions. (I’ll explain this more later)

⛤Now you have a cleansed and charged pendulum. What’s next? Well, you need to program it. By programming, I mean you need to establish how your pendulum will work for you. This includes deciding how you want your pendulum to move based on certain responses to your questions. Now, I have seen many posts and read several books that say that you are supposed to ask the pendulum to show you how it will move for yes, no, maybe, I don’t know, etc. I was taught that you shouldn’t do this because it opens you up for potentially dangerous situations and it sets the precedent that the pendulum or the spirits communicating through the pendulum are in control. I was taught that this is potentially dangerous. I was also taught that this is your experience on this plane of existence. Because of that, you should be in control and do what you are comfortable with. The pendulum is a tool and the spirits communicating through it are guides that can only offer advice. Anyway, you should be the one who decides how the pendulum will move according to the different responses. My pendulum moves in a clockwise circle for “yes”, a counter-clockwise circle for “no”, back and forward for “maybe”, side to side for “I don’t know”, and it stays still for “please rephrase the question.” You can program your pendulum however makes you feel comfortable and however you will remember the meaning of the movements best. After all, what’s the point in asking a question if you can’t understand the answer?

Going back to charging the pendulum. Programming it actually goes into charging it. The more you use your pendulum, the more it becomes aligned to your energy. When you first start using your pendulum, begin by asking it mundane questions. Start with things that don’t have a significant impact on your life, such as what should a I eat for dessert, what color shoes should I wear, should I buy this thing. Simple stuff like that gets you used to your pendulum and it helps you remember your programming for it better. It also helps your pendulum become aligned with your energy and makes the responses more accurate.

⛤Using a pendulum is a great way to get advice on decisions you’re indecisive about. It’s also a wonderful tool for communicating with your spirit guides and companions.

⛥As you get more accustomed to using your pendulum, you can do other things with it. You can create charts to help you get more in depth information. For example, you can make a time table to help organize your tasks for the day. You can make a list of activities to do and when you are bored or don’t know what to do next, ask your pendulum. My aunt did this a lot with her kids. They would want to go outside to play and she would want them to do homework. She would dowse (ask her pendulum) on it and whatever the pendulum said is usually* what they did. Additionally, you can use your pendulum for spirit work. You can make a letter board (like a ouija board) and communicate with spirits. You can also use pendulum for Reiki work, using it to find blockages in the chakras. The list goes on and on.

I put an * next to “usually” in my little anecdote because as I said earlier, this is your experience on this plane of existence. Your pendulum and the spirits communicating through it can only offer advice. You have the ability to either listen to what your pendulum advises or not. That being said, in my experience the pendulum is usually right.

⛤Anyway, I know that was a super long winded post about pendulums. I hope you find the information useful. If using pendulums is something you want to do, go for it! I absolutely LOVE mine and I am so happy I had someone in my life who could teach me about them!

Thank you and blessed be,

Anne Sage 🌻🌼

⛤Also: a good exercise to do with pendulums is to have two, one in each hand, and see if you can get them both to move in harmony with each other. This will show any weak energy flow in your body. It’s a good way to help build up that flow and make it stronger. I, personally, have to work on this with my right hand because it is significantly weaker than my left.

Rowan’s, “Bathe Me the Fuck Better” Bath Spell

You Will Need:

  • As many candles as you want (I chose six, and had red, white and blue ones. Not because I am a mad patriot but because they’re associated with health, love (of self), and cleansing.)
  • Filter paper to make a lil’ bag out of (if you don’t have this to hand, you can chuck the stuff into the bath water as long as it’s safe to do so).
  • A small elastic (rubber) band to tie the bag off with.
  • A bath full of favourably temperatured water.
  • Rose petals.
  • Lavender buds.
  • Smoky Quartz, Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz (you can have some of those, all, or one).
  • Pink Himalayan Salt.

To make this easier, prep your bag before you run and intend on getting into, the bath.

  1. Open your filter paper and place the salt in the centre first - remember that you’re going to seal the bag with a rubber band, so leave room around the edges.
  2. Then add the rose petals and lavender buds into the centre of your little salt pile.
  3. Lastly, add your crystals and then seal the bag by pulling all of the edges upward towards each other, and tying the band tightly around the neck you should have.

Once your bath is run and you’re prepped, you

may

want to do this

optional step:

  1. To add an extra oomph, pass the baggy through the smoke of your favourite incense. Mine, in this case would be vanilla.

Final bit!

  1. Place your candles around the edge of your bathtub, and as you begin lighting them, repeat this phrase (you can do this aloud or in your head) until each candle is lit and flickering deliciously:

By the warmth of the flame, I am cleansed. By the crackling of the fire, I thrive once more. Et sic factum est, et semper erit.

Now place your bag into the water and climb in. Allow the troubles of the day to melt away as you soak amongst the flames.

Passive Magick [Part 1]

As a witch who works full time, suffers from a couple of chronic illnesses, and has two furbabies to care for, I’m finding that I have little time or physical energy to carry out full blown rituals or spells when practicing magick. For a long time, I felt like I was neglecting my practice because I wasn’t “doing enough” until I realized that you can be a witch and do spells with a minimal amount of tools and supplies. I’m not necessarily saying that you don’t need to put in just as much effort, but there are plenty of ways to practice magick in a minimalistic manner.

  • Correspondences - while it’s totally fine to have a physical grimoire that’s beautifully written, it’s not always time effective to flip through pages and pages of notes just to find a correspondence for an item you want to use, regardless of how organized you are. This is where technology comes in. I use OneNote for my grimoire - it’s an app that can be synced across various platforms such as your PC, smartphone, and tablet. There’s the option to add tabs at the top of the page (when using it on a PC), which is great for organizing your grimoire by subject. There’s also a search function, which comes in handy when you want to do magick on the go or need to quickly and easily find something.
  • Apps - I’d dare to say that most people have some kind of smartphone these days, so if you do, find some apps that you can use in your practice. Some of my favorites for Android include Phases of the Moon, Aquarius2Go, Galaxy Tarot and Galaxy Runes, and Runic Formulas.
  • Pre-spell Preparation - if you’ve been practicing for a while, you probably have an idea of the kinds of spells you like to do the most, whether they’re for protection, cleansing, relaxation, peace, grounding, cursing, whatever. With that being said, stock up on various ingredients that you know you’ll use, and separate them based on intent. In the same sense, you can prepare and charge various spell components ahead of time so that they’re ready to use when you need them - things like moon water, powders, and oil blends come to mind. I tend to do a lot of spells for success, so I’ve made a success oil in the form of a roll on perfume that I keep with me at all times - it contains a few different essential oils that match my intent (and are skin safe), a carrier oil, and some gem chips that keep it charged. I dab a little bit on the insides of my wrists when I need a boost, and sometimes I’ll even use it to draw sigils on myself that also match my intent.
  • Use items you already have - this bit is especially useful if you’re trying to cut down on the cost of “made for magick” items, i.e. things you’d find in a metaphysical store. There are tons of household items that can be used for magick that you likely already have - tea bags, herb blends for cooking, vinegar, body wash and soap, perfume, distilled water, etc. You can use these items as is, or combine them to make whatever you need. [disclaimer & warning: be smart about it, don’t go around mixing bleach and vinegar]
  • Speaking of using stuff you already have: Find out the correspondences of the things lying around your house and combine mundane action with magick. Gotta take a shower? Need to clean the house? Time to cook dinner? Figure out the correspondences of the stuff you’re using and make a quick and easy spell out of it.
    • I tend to do bath magick a lot - everyone has to bathe at some point, so why not make it magickal? Places like Bath & Body Works and Lush are really good about listing the herbal and floral ingredients they use in their products, so pick a few of your favorites and go to town!
    • I use a Swiffer WetJet for the kitchen and bathroom - the liquid cleaning agent that I buy for it smells like lavender, so not only am I physically cleansing my space, I’m also inviting peaceful and relaxing energy into it.
    • When I go to buy a new candle, I open up my OneNote grimoire and quickly find the correspondences of the color and scent and use it accordingly - so not only does my house smell good, it’s also filled with a particular energy based on the correspondences of the candle.
    • When cooking, look up the correspondences for both the meal as a final product and the ingredients that go into it - I use olive oil a lot, so sometimes I’ll even draw a sigil in the bottom of the pan or dish to add a little boost.

Look out for part 2 of this post, where I’ll be making an actual list of various ways to perform passive magick and incorporate it into your daily routine.

Magickal Margarita Toner

Lime is a kitchen essential in my home, but I just recently learned the more witchy uses for it! Lime is super great for the skin but is also used to promote tranquility, to purify, and protect. I whipped up a little toner water to use as a glamour spell and gosh, does it smell and feel wonderful.

If you’d like to try it yourself, the recipe was super simple:
One Lime
A spritz of citrus vodka (Vodka is surprisingly good for the skin, did you know that? A little bit of lemon or grapefruit juice can work as a substitute though)
Fine Salt
Water of you choice! I recommend moon water as most witches do, and full moon water is good for reinvigorating the soul. New moon is good for cleansing of negativity, though, and (properly treated/diluted) ocean water can be good for washing away the bad or instilling change.

It doesn’t make too much, as these sorts of things don’t tend to keep very long (2-3 weeks at best). It’s a super quick recipe, too! It only took me like 5 minutes to whip up - and that’s including having to find gloves because lime juice is really painful on open wounds ;;

If you’d like to try it, just remember that you have to think real hard about what you want out of your toner water while you’re creating it. Is its purpose to cleanse, to invigorate, to protect you from outside forces? Your intent matters a lot.

Happy witchin’, everyone <3

Dragon Protection Oil

Wear as a personal oil to enhance your powers and to call on the Dragon’s power, protection, and wisdom.

Magickal Circles

Introduction:

Circles are powerful magickal constructs that can help power you’re working, and help you in your rituals, and spellcraft. These constructs can be constructed, and used in order to direct specific energies two specific places. By understanding the ins-and-outs of the magickal circles one can construct unique powerful designs that will incorporate metaphysical understandings, occult understandings, correspondences, associations, shapes, alphabets, glyphs, sigils, and words to create beautiful designs that will act as tools to help you direct energy in very specific ways. By incorporating all these things together a practitioner can allow these things to work in harmony, so that they can help manifest their will. The practitioner will need to learn how the different parts are connected to each other, and what they stand for in order to create powerful magickal circles. In this post we will be familiarizing ourselves with the different parts of the circle, and how they interact with the energies, so we can put them together in some form of a system that will help us in specific forms of magickal working.

The Main Circle(s):

The first thing we are going to talk about is the basic part of the circle which is the circle itself. Magickal circles are generally made with a main circle that goes around the center, that acts as the space in which the practitioner can move around, and interact with their working. The main circle is going to act as a doorway between the two worlds of the spiritual, and physical, and will be the place magick is performed from. This circle will represent the unity of the two worlds, and will also be the area where energy will gather, so that you can use it for your spell, or ritual. The circle is connected to the spiritual realms, and the higher planes of existences, and we’ll call energies down from the universe in order to help you, and your practice allowing you to raise a cone of power. Energy is going to pool and gather inside this main circle empowering you and the rest of the circle. The circle will also bring in feminine, and yin energies into your working, and will protect you from outside forces you do not wish to interact with while you are doing your practice. You can have more than one main in your design these will act as different levels in the overarching paradigm of your design.

Smaller Circles:

Other circles can be incorporated into your design, these will be treated like smaller versions of the main circle, and will be places for energy to pool, and to form their own cones of power. Inside the circles will be good places to put sigils, glyphs, names, and/or symbols, so that energy taken into the circles will be able to empower the symbol within. This will result in the energy inside the circle taking on the intent of the sigils, glyphs, names, and/or symbols allowing you to use that to affect your practice. If you have other practitioners helping you out in your practice, this could also be a spot for them to reside in to help you with your working instead of using some form of a sigil, glyph, name, and/or symbol. These circles will also provide protection for whatever resides within that circle just like the main ones do, and will also bring feminine, and yin energy into your circle.

Center:

The center is the middle point of your circle. This is a very important point, because it controls, and affects everything else in the circle. This is where the main intention, or the controller of the magical circle is placed. You are usually the controller of the circle, or you can put a sigil, glyph, name, and/or symbol in this place. Whatever is in the middle of the circle will act like the generator in a crystal grid, and will act as a conduit to the rest of the energy in the circle, so that it’s will can be acted out. The center will act in this way in middle of every single shape, so it is important to be aware of this. By understanding how to get the most out of the controlling center points of the shapes that exist within your design will greatly help you understand the energy flow through out your circle, and how it will empower your desire.

Squares:

Squares can also be incorporated into your design to help empower your practice. They will bring forth the energies of the elements, and directions along with the masculine, and yang energy that the square embodies. The square is also connected to the physical world, and when the square is brought together with the circle the square supports, and fortifies it empowering the circle, and creates perfect balance with its female, and yin energy. This will create a good balance in your circle, and will allow your circle to represent duality. You could also put a sigil, glyph, name, and/or symbol inside the square.  that would give whatever is inside stable, balanced, and grounded energies that it can use to fortify and support itself, so it can do its job more effectively, and use the energy of the four elements, and four cardinal directions to help it in it’s working.

Cross:

The cross just like the square is also connected to the four elements, but is instead connected to the five directions (the five directions include center as the 5th direction). The cross is also connected to choice, hope, balance, masculinity, physicality, sun, life and yang energy. The cross in magickal circles will direct energy to the center, and will compartmentalize other energies into the four slots that it creates. The cross can be a tricky thing to incorporate into some circles, but when used right it can be very effective.

Triangle:

The energies of the triangle can be brought into your design of your magical circle. These triangles will stand for, and will be greatly connected to creation, and manifestation. Triangles are used primarily in circles to create, manifest, or call a specific energy into the circle, so that you can work with it. The triangle is also connected to the balance between the trinities, and will bring balance of those energies in to your magickal circle. Triangles have both masculine, and feminine energies , and yin, and yang energies depending upon which way they are facing. An upright triangle is a triangle that manifests things to you, while the inverted triangle is one that manifests your desires upon the external world. The upright triangle is the one who embodies the feminine, and yin energies, while the inverted triangle is the one who embodies the masculine, and yang energies. Upright, and inverted will be decided upon the triangles relativity to the center of the circle. These are also used as the places to summon entities through invocation, and evocation. The traditional version of a evocation triangle is call the triangle of art. Triangle of arts are upright because it is used to manifest entities to you. When the triangle is used for evocation it is put outside the circle in order to give the practitioner some protection, and space in between them, and the entity. These triangles usually have names of powerful spirits or deities around them to act as a form of binding, so that the practitioner can control, and worked with the entity safely. These triangles also usually have circles inside them to allow the entity to have its own space that will be in between  the physical, and the spiritual worlds, and will also allow them to build up more energy to help you in you’re working. Depending upon where your triangles are placed will communicate, if yours magick circle is a evocative circle, or invocative Circle. Triangles can be very useful when trying to manifest constructs, and will be very important tools to incorporate into your magical circles.

Lines, And Curved Lines:

Lines, and curves are used to combine two points, so that their energies can directly interact with each other. Lines represent the masculinity and yang energy, while curved lines represent feminine, and yin energy. Lines, and curved lines also stand for the energy of balance, and duality. When two constructs are connected with a line, or curve the two points, become the two extremes on a polarity spectrum with a line in the middle representing the space in between those two energies. These lines, and curved lines will also be used to move energy through out your circle. This is done, because energy will take these lines as paths to follow, and a physical mark of your intention, so the energy will enjoy moving on these lines like the water in a river. These lines, and curved lines will take on the energy around them, or that interacts with them, so by writing symbols, names, and/or glyphs under, above, and/or near will Infuse those lines with that type of energy, given that line its properties, associations, and magical correspondences allowing it to flow throughout the circle. It is important to remember that these lines, and curved lines make up all shapes that will be used in the magickal circle. This will truly apply to any place within the circle and must be kept in mind, so you can use it effectively to empower your working.

Pentagram, and Pentacle / Inverted Pentagram, And Inverted Pentacle:

The pentagram, and pentacle along with the inverted version of both of these can be brought into the design of your circle to bring in energies of power, protection, connection to the five western elements, and connection to the wu-xing (the five phases). These will greatly empower your circles by allowing the energies they produced to run throughout it in order to charge, and power your working. Depending upon what you are doing with your circle will determine whether you will want to include upright pentagrams, or inverted pentagrams, or you might even try to include both of them. Whether it is a inverted, and upright pentagram, or pentacle will depend on its relativity to the center of the circle. Using the upright pentagram would bring the energies of the external, feminine, yin, and spiritual world to help you in you’re working, while using the inverted pentagram would bring the energies of the internal, masculine, yang, and  physical world to help you in you’re working. The Inverted pentagram is a lot more connected to the self, where the upright pentagram were connected to the collective, both are very wonderful symbols and can help you out on in creating your own magick circle. Simply by adding a circle around the pentagram, it will become the pentacle. inverted, or upright the circle of the pentacle will add energies of unity, and protection to the already existing power of the pentagram, but it is up to you to decide when to use which.

Hexagram:

Another wonderful shape that you can bring into your magickal circle creation would be the hexagram. The hexagram is made when an upright triangle, and an inverted triangle meet to form the shape, because of this the hexagon shares correspondences with both triangles, and is also made out of masculine, and feminine energies, and yin, and yang energies. The hexagram also corresponds to the four elements and the Trinity because of the triangles that is made out of. The hexagram is also connected to the planetary energies, and  is also connected to the western four elements. Due to the fact the hexagram is made of the connection of the two triangles it is connected to both external, and internal manifestation, which makes it a good tool to have in magick circles that are related to invocation, and evocation.

Sigils, Glyphs, Names, And Symbols

Sigils, glyphs, names, and symbols are going to be powerful tools that will help you in the creation of your own magickal circle. All of these constructs have energies that are going to be used in order to empower, and guide you’re working towards your desire. Every one of these sigils, glyphs, names, and symbols is going to have its own correspondences, energies, and associations that will add different effects based on which one you choose, and how you choose to implemented into your circle. These can be taken from anywhere, or even created. This will not only personalize your circle, but will also provide energies that will be helpful with specific rituals, and practices. you can also choose to incorporate names of specific entities in order to invoke them to your ritual to help you accomplish your desires through the use of the circle.  All you would need to do is to write an entity’s name in, around, or near a specific aspect, or shape to connect their energies to that construct, so that their energies can help out your circle to manifest your desires. Their energy will usually show up to help you out, if they are willing to help you in your endeavors. Any surface that is blank in your magickal circle can be filled with some form of sigils, glyphs, names, and symbols to empower that specific part of the circle to represent a specific energy. By learning how these energies interact with each other, and work together to form one common goal the practitioner can craft a very effective circle in order to help them out with specific intents. Any shape that surrounds, or is near these sigils, glyphs, names, and symbols will be influenced by their energy.

Conclusion:

Learning all of these elements of the circle will allow you to bring all these aspects together in perfect harmony to create a magical circle, that will be good for the workings that you want to do. It is a very creative, and magickal process that will push the extent of your metaphysical, and occult knowledge. But, through the creation of a magickal circle you will greatly be able to empower you working, and to better your magical effectiveness.
