Last night there was a candlelight vigil held at the Magic Kingdom at park close to honor the victims of the Pulse massacre. It was unofficial and not sponsored by Disney in any way. And yet, Disney showed their solidarity and respects in a uniquely Disney way.
After the nightly “Kiss Goodnight,” the atmosphere music was shut off and all of Main Street was cloaked in dead silence as hundreds of people held candles, phones, and glow sticks into the air. And then, in an unexpected show of support, the colors of the castle changed from red to yellow, then green and blue and finally purple.
Disney also allowed working cast members to attend in costume and even shut down a few of the Main Street shops. Emporium cast members, who lost one of their own in the shooting, stood directly in front of the castle with a heart made of glow sticks. Inside the heart, among the candles, were trinkets and small things that cast and guests left to show their respects such as stickers, celebration buttons, maps, even Photopass cards and Mickey ears.
As guests exited the park, they were handed rainbow Mickey pins or Mickey love pins by working cast members. And cast members who left through the tunnels were handed rainbow Mickey antenna toppers.
I cannot put into words how comforting and important it is to see Disney showing their support for the LGBT+ community. They didn’t have to acknowledge the vigil at all but they did and they made it more magical than anyone expected.
So There is a magazine published weekly that is specifically for Disney Cast Members, called “Eyes and Ears”. Here’s a picture of it:
This isn’t the issue that I took a picture of this from, but this magazine IS specifically for Disney cast members (you pick it up backstage; I work in Magic Kingdom so I pick it up in the tunnels) and occasionally it publishes misconstrued Disney Facts and corrects them . The sentence at the top says “The internet and other non-Disney sources can be a host to a wealth of misinformation. Take not of the following facts:” Including the one above about whether or not the Beast’s name is Adam. If you can’t read it, it states: In “Beauty and the Beast,” the name of the Beast in human form is… the Prince! There is no human name for this character! Snow White’s prince is also just “the Prince.” — If you ask Belle in the parks what his name is she’ll even tell you it’s just “Beast”. I personally asked Snow White the same thing once and she said “Well, the dwarfs already took all the names so we decided to just call him Prince!” So the Beast’s name is NOT Adam.
I am so RIDICULOUSLY glad they let them do this. I’ve talked to Research Cast who are retired Entertainment Cast and they’ve told me that when shows close they don’t normally let the Cast who ended the show come back out and do a final good-bye. One CM even got a reprimand for just doing a bow at the end of a show he closed (I’ll leave out which one for his sake).
But this show means a lot to me and many others. The Cast deserved their bow and final good-bye. Hopefully many of them will be back in the new show!
Omg ok so a few days ago Kourtney Kardashian and her fam came to Magic Kingdom and they rode the ride that I work at (of course I was off that day) but she ended up leaving her phone on the ride. So my shift coordinator called one of our cast members and the conversation went as follows:
“Colleen you will not believe what I am holding in my hands right now”
“Kourtney Kardashians cell phone”
“OH MY GOSH SHE PROBABLY HAS BEYONCÉ AS A CONTACT”
And this is why there is never a dull moment at Disney World.
