A/N: anonymous asked: Can you write a oneshot where Sam is sleeping and holding reader while she’s just hanging out with him. He starts to talk in his sleep and she hears him say Jess’ name. I don’t really mind where you go with this or what reader does, I’m just lookin for some angst. :) thank you for writing!
It had been a long day and an even longer hunt and when you all had finally made it back to the bunker it was a relief, although still being fairly early you and Sam and decided to watch a movie for the time being. Laying in Sam’s be curdled up in one another, you could hear Sam’s breaths deepen as he slipped further into his own little dream world. You, on the other had, were still wide awake but thought it best to let Sam sleep, besides, he had a tight grip in your stomach and his head buried in the back of your neck so it wasn’t like you were going anywhere.
You and Sam had been dating for a few months now, although it came as a shock when the hunter had confessed his feelings for you. It was different than any other relationship you had, you loved Sam’s company and the way he felt so safe, you loved that he was all yours, no one else’s, unlike your ex who had been cheating on you with two other girls.
That had stung, and it was Sam who had picked up the pieces of your broken heart.
You were halfway through the movie when you head Sam mumble in his sleep. You scooted back, straining to listen.
“Mmmhf.” He groaned, his breathing picking up.
“Sam?” you whispered, shifting your weight slightly to try and look at him.
His arms tightened around your waist as he pulled you closer.
“Mmmh, Jess-” he sighed nudging your neck.
Your heart was pounding in your chest as you lay wide eyed.
Jess? As in college-Jess? Love-of-his-life Jess? Not-you Jess?
Thump, thump, thump
Did Sam always dream about Jess?
Thump, thump, thump
How many times did he mutter her name in his sleep?
Thump, thump, thump
Gingerly you tried to untangle yourself from Sam, you felt uncomfortable with his arms wrapped so tightly around you.
Did he think you were Jess? Did he wish you were Jess?
Moving his hands away from your stomach you rolled away from him, pausing when you heard him start to stir. Sam took a deep breath before he flipped on his back, reaching to your side of the bed and pulling you against his chest. You cursed internally. Stuck again.
“I missed you.” Sam mumbled before pressing a kiss into your hair.
You couldn’t breath and you squeezed your eyes shut. You waited for a few seconds before you decided to move again.
You had just made it off the bed when you heard Sam groan.
“Y/N?” he questioned in a sleepy voice, hands coming up to wipe the sleep from his eyes.
“What are you doing?”
“Uh- getting a drink.” you whispered as you walked to the door.
“Oh, I’ll come with you-”
“T-that’s okay, go back to bed.”
“I don’t mind-”
“Sam, I just need to be alone.”
You watched as Sam sat up, just barely making out his form in the dark room.
“Y/N, what’s wrong?” he asked, flicking on the lamp beside his bed, eyes squinting from the brightness.
Sam knew you were lying. Standing up Sam made his way over to you, arms reaching out to pull you into him.
Did he do this to Jess when she was up late too?
It was an accident, you weren’t really thinking about what you were doing, it just happened. You flinched away from Sam.
“Y/N? What is it? What’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?” he questioned, letting his hands fall to his sides.
“Sam you mumbled Jess’ name in your sleep.” you admitted as you pulled open the door and made your way to the kitchen, Sam following right behind you.
“You were talking in your sleep and you said Jess’ name.”
You pulled the fridge door open, blocking your view of Sam as you grabbed a water bottle.
“Do you miss her Sam?” you questioned as you shut the door.
“W-well I mean, yeah but-”
“Do you love her?”
“Do you love me?”
“Of course I do! Yes, I love you-”
“You said Jess… you- you thought I was jess, Sam.”
“Y/N- I don’t…”
You put your water on the counter, suddenly not thirsty as you walked past Sam.
“Y/N please, I didn’t know what I was saying.”
You smiled sadly.
“Sam she was the first person that came to mind when you felt another body next to you,” your hands found their way to the hemline of your shirt and tugged at it nervously.
“Its been years, do you still think its her when you wake up? Do you feel disappointed when you wake up to me?”
“Sam, you have pictures of her in a shoebox in the closet.”
You could see Sam stiffen.
“You know about-”
“Yeah, I know, I found it a couple weeks ago.”
“Why did you hide it from me Sam?” you questioned shaking your head.
“I didn’t want you to think- I thought you would think that I didn’t love you-”
“But its not just Jess is it? you have a necklace labelled Madison and some photos with Amelia labelled on them.”
“That’s- its not what you think-”
“When you wake up in the morning do you think I’m Jess?” you questioned suddenly, folding your arms over your chest and looking at you bare feet, wiggling your toes against the cold tiles.
“Sam the more you stall the more I’m thinking yes.”
Sam’s mouth bobbed open and close, a strangled noise escaping form his lips. The corner of your mouth pulled into a sad smile as you walked past Sam.
“Y/N wait!” he called after you, following you down the hall.
“What are you doing?” He questioned when you started to pull covers out of the closet.
“I think I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight.”
“Wouldn’t want you to think I‘m Jess and be disappointed when its just me.”
“Y/N you cant actually believe I’m disappointed when I wake up to you.”
“You hide other things from me, what’s one more right?” you spat as you walked out of the kitchen , Sam trailing close behind.
“Please you have to believe me, sure sometimes I wake up and I get confused, sure sometimes I think you’re Jess, but I am never disappointed.”
“I’m not so sure I can believe you Sam.” you said sadly as you left Sam in the hall.
