madame samovar

O, What’s In a Name?

In Brazil, the names of a few major characters in Beauty and the Beast are different from the English version.

Belle became Bela, meaning ”beautiful” or “pretty” in Portuguese (and a common nickname for Isabela just like in English)

Beast became Fera (Portuguese for “beast”)

Cogsworth transformed into Horloge (French for “clock”)

Mrs. Potts turned into Madame Samovar (Samovar being a type of tea kettle-ish thing used in central and southeastern Europe).
