madame chalgrin

Jacques-Louis David

Madame Trudaine (1791-92)

Musée du Louvre, Paris

Formerly thought to be Madame Chalgrin (the daughter of Joseph Vernet), this young woman was the wife of Charles-Louis Trudaine, a friend of the artist. The painting remained unfinished, which explains the vibrant scumbling, also present in the Portrait of Juliette Récamier (Louvre)

Mme Chalgrin  (1789) by Vigée Le Brun

Marguerite-Emilie-Vernet, baptised 1760, the daughter of Joseph Vernet and Cecilia Virginia Parker. In 1776 she married Jean-Francois Chalgrin, Intendant des Batiments de Monsieur, le comte de Provence. Their daughter, Louise-Josephe Chalgrin, was born in 1777, and in 1794 married Claude Maurin Saugrain of the familiy of Parisian engravers. She was a close friend of Rosalie Bocquet Filleul and Vigée Le Brun. She was arrested at Mme Filleul’s home; both were guillotined in July 1794.
