“The reason you haven’t felt love is because it doesn’t exist. What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons. You’re born alone and you die alone and this world just drops a bunch of rules on top of you to make you forget those facts. But I never forget. I’m living like there’s no tomorrow, because there isn’t one.”
It [‘Men and Chicken’] has a very dark sense of humour - is that your sense of humour? Mads Mikkelsen: “Yes, absolutely, I have a hard time with any other kind of humour - romantic comedies have to be very sharp to find myself laughing. When it’s dark, when it’s awkward, when it’s character-driven I find it interesting.” [x]
Nostalgia - it’s delicate, but potent… in Greek, “nostalgia” literally means “the pain from an old wound.” It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s a carousel that lets us travel the way a child travels - around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved.
The reason you haven’t felt love is because it doesn’t exist. What you call ‘love’ was invented by guys like me to sell nylons. Pretty sure about it. You’re born alone and you die alone and this world just drops a bunch of rules on top of you to make you forget those facts but I never forget. I’m living like there’s no tomorrow because… there isn’t one.
- Speaking of Mads Mikkelsen you’ve made a lot of films with him and have written for him. Do you specifically think of him when writing a script?
Anders Thomas Jensen: Yeah. Obviously I adore him as an actor, he can play anything and I don’t think I could have done this role because it’s so difficult what he does. So yes I always have him [in mind], in almost every script I do, I have a part for him because I really just like him as an actor. Especially in this one I really did. I approached him very early and asked him if he was interested in playing a chronic masturbator and he was!
- What’s cool about him is that despite the fact he has a large female following he’s unafraid to look disgusting. Does he have no ego?
Anders Thomas Jensen: No but he loves that. His wife hates me because she always waits to see what I’ve done to him [laughs]. He’s one of the least vain actors, he just likes to do characters with a twist. I think he enjoys it very much.
I can’t wait until next year when all of you are in Vietnam. You will be pining for the day someone was trying to make your life easier. And when you’re over there and you’re in the jungle and they’re shooting at you, remember you’re not dying for me because I never liked you.
