Root + Shaw. 1 - 3 - 8 - 10 -11 - 13 - 19 - 39! :)

1.   How do they fall asleep? Wake up? Any daily rituals?

Shaw falls asleep easy, always - she can sleep practically anywhere, at any time. it’s kind of annoying. when root’s off on a mission, she always wakes up at some ungodly hour to root’s cold feet; she doesn’t mind nearly as much as her sleepy complaints might have you believe. Root, on the other hand, has a restless sleep schedule; sometimes shaw will come home from working a number at three, four in the morning. root will be on the couch with all the lights on, a computer in front of her face like she hadn’t realized how much time had passed, and shaw finds herself pulling the nerd glasses off of her face and luring her into bed (or, on her particularly stubborn nights, falling asleep with her head in root’s lap with the lights still on while root finishes her coding. being woken up when the sun’s coming up to root’s soft voice telling her to come to bed)

3.  Are they open about their relationship? How do they feel about public displays of affection?

depends on where they are, who they’re around. The prospect of pda doesn’t bother either of them in the slightest if they’re not on a mission, or in a place that feels unsafe. neither of them either particularly get off on it, either, although occasionally they’re both totally for inappropriate groping and semi-crude innuendoes if it means making someone they both find annoying or idiotic or bigoted feel uncomfortable. once they have to spend an afternoon at a church event while they’re working a number and some woman who’s been side-eying them all day asks with a sneer if either of them is even christian; root, with her fucking ridiculous wink just goes, “oh, I talk to god every day” in this voice that even makes sameen blush. still, she tries to be a supportive partner: “sometimes she even lets me listen.”

8.  What do they like best about their partner?

see above

(that’s my way of getting out of answering this impossible question)

10.  Who drives? Cooks? Does the handiwork? Cleans? Pays the bills? Handles the public?

Shaw drives unless it’s the motorcycle. root won’t let her anywhere near it. Which, whatever - but root’s a terrible driver. Reckless, and not in the fun way. Her driver’s license is the one piece of documentation she probably shouldn’t have forged, honestly. And shaw won’t let the machine drive unless it’s a code red (a code red is code for banging in the back seat). Cleans/handiwork: shaw. Root’s a goddamn mess. Bills? Root wires money from various places (i.e. pro life organizations, trump’s campaign donations etc) into the account she uses to pay for utilities and whatnot. When it comes to handling the public, they’re pretty good at picking up on when the other needs some support. root knows when shaw’s reached her forced socializing limit and shaw knows when root’s just kind of going through the motions, or especially if she’s been cut off for the machine for some reason and needs an assist. They’re pretty good together when it comes to that sort of thing

11. Do they celebrate holidays? Anniversaries?

nah, not really. holidays are neither of their things. Shaw doesn’t have the sentimentality and root doesn’t have many fond memories attached to like, christmas or her birthday or anything. Anniversaries, not exactly; but every year around the time the war ended comes around, root gets all depressed – it was bittersweet; Samaritan was long gone but that had meant they’d lost finch and reese in order to save the machine – and shaw takes her to that restaurant overlooking the city. She doesn’t say much; it’s the machine that tells root it had been the restaurant sameen’s parents had come to all those years ago before she even mentions it. But it’s this oddly sincere affection, this attempt at comfort, that makes root nearly dizzy. She watches sameen with her jaw set firm, sipping at john’s preferred drink, all utter respect and earnest acknowledgement. And she feels so sad and wistful and proud and loved all at once

13. What do they do for fun? Do they have a favorite activity or do they like to switch things up?

lately, they’ve been training more often. Shaw was actually pretty impressed when she realized that root had learned to throw a decent punch while she’d been away. Apparently she’d been sparring with reese. but she still needs a lot of improvement which ends up being a pretty fun pastime for both of them (shaw really likes teaching people to fight and root really like watching shaw get all sweaty in a sports bra). oh, and root has gotten weirdly into antiquing? probably has something to do with having an actual home for the first time in decades, and being overly-indulgent in decorating it. Shaw hates it at first – what does anyone need an antique storage chest for? “guns, sameen. or sex toys. maybe we need two” Also root somehow finds a legitimate 19th century apothecary cabinet where they store things like medical supplies and lube which. Yeah okay, that’s pretty cool even shaw has to admit.

19.  What do they fight about? What are their arguments like? How do they make up?

Mostly about root not giving enough of a shit about herself and shaw getting really annoyed in a way that makes her almost uncomfortable. she’s never given this much of a shit about anyone for such an extended amount of time and the fact that root treats her body like a disposable weapon makes this terrifying in a variety of ways. this sometimes leads to root feeling like she’s being treated like an invalid by shaw, who somehow threatens the machine into also being more cautious with root. it’s a bit stifling, and not something root’s used to – which shaw gets. they’re not the sorts to let themselves simmer in an argument so they tend to work their shit out fairly quickly. it’s just a matter of figuring out how to verbalize it, which can be difficult for all of them (they’re working on it)

39. Who initiated the relationship? Who kissed who first?  When did they realize they were in love?

I mean, root talks a big game, but it was totally shaw who kissed her first – root didn’t dare, really; sure, she wasn’t shy about wanting shaw, but she wanted shaw to want her. and, okay, she may have been more than a little encouraging on that front, but she was always gonna wait till shaw gave in. it was more fun that way. It happens when theyre in the cia safehouse – and root’s kind of been holding her breath since shaw got all up in her face with the knife in the car -  but then there she is, sitting there with a hood and some zip ties, just patiently waiting until shaw breaks the silence and levels her with her little spiel about this being a once off thing. Ha. And love? hmm. root hadn’t realized how deep she’d gotten herself until the stock exchange. an awfully cruel time for a realization, but she’d never truly considered it before that. and with shaw, I think it’s just little things that spark off realizations, like buying soy milk or constantly tripping over wires and cables or buying those dumb fuzzy socks for root’s cold feet – she doesn’t dwell on it much; maybe you could call it love, sure, whatever. she doesn’t really think there’s much of a point in thinking about it too much, but she’s become pretty content with it either way. sometimes, cold feet or not, she’d even go so far as to say she’s happy
