Things your meal doesn’t have to include in order to be balanced and healthy:

1. Designer protein powder
2. “Superfoods” that will “change your life” including but not limited to: maca powder, bootstrap molasses, acai, chia seeds, coconut oil, dandelion greens, brazil nuts, turmeric, tart cherries, kombucha, spirulina, goji berries*…
3. 30 ingredients
4. Any one ingredient that you never usually buy and will only use in this one recipe
5. Any one ingredient that you never usually buy and which will sabotage your entire grocery budget for the week
6. Spiralized vegetables
7. “Detox” ANYTHING.

All this shit does is make healthy eating seem expensive and unattainable. IT’S NOT. 

You can get $25 worth of fruits, vegetables, rice, and lean protein at the grocery store and you’re set for a week or two. You don’t have to eat maca-spiked spiralized-zucchini avocado protein muffins (or whatever the fuck). You don’t have to rush out and buy fennel or tabbouleh or bison.

Just try to eat mostly real food, a lot of it, treat yourself when you feel like it, drink a lot of water, and you’re set. 

It’s cheap, it’s attainable, it’s accessible. Don’t let anyone - your parents, your friends, a girl trying to make money off of instagram - tell you differently!!!

Up close and personal: overnight oats. One of my top healthy meals of choice.

Blend the following ingredients in a blender or food processor:

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 heaping tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp maca (optional)
Transfer liquid mix to a bowl or jar and add between ¾-1 cup GF oats.

Allow oats to soak in fridge for at least one hour or overnight.

I topped my oats with fresh strawberries and pomegranate seeds, cacao nibs, desiccated coconut and a scoop of raw cacao powder.

I wanted a purple smoothie after watching @planetumoja sip on one this morning. So here we have a maqui PB smoothie:

3 dates
2 frozen bananas
1 tsp. maca
2 tbsp. creamy unsalted peanut butter
1 cup water
1 tbsp. maqui powder (from @nature.restore)

Blend until smooth. X

How do you feel about overnight oats? I remember the first time I heard of soaking oats in the fridge overnight I was turned off by the idea. Now I don’t know why I didn’t try it sooner. I prepare my oats by first blending following ingredients:

1 cup unsweetened almond milk (Preferably my homemade cinnamon almond milk)
1 heaping tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp maca (optional)

I transfer liquid mix to a bowl or jar and add between ¾-1 cup GF oats. Sometimes I do this the night before and sometimes in the morning (I find that even an hour of soaking is okay for me personally). My favorite toppings are frozen blueberries, fresh strawberries and cacao nibs.

My ancestors didn’t add milk or sugar to ka’kau. Ka’kau was a gift from the Gods and consumed as a ceremonial elixir and mood enhancer. Most people don’t like the taste of pure ka’kau so I include bananas and dates to sweeten this potion. I also added a bit of instant espresso for an added kick but this can be omitted.

Kaape Ka'kau Smoothie

2 frozen bananas
1 ½ cup water
1 tbsp raw cacao
½ tbsp instant espresso
1 tsp maca (optional)
2 tbsp hemp hearts
3 pitted medjool dates

Blend until smooth.
