A case for Lydia as a strong character

I’ve noted some criticisms of Lydia centred around her “weakness”, i.e. her nervous disposition, her frightened reactions to threat or intimidation, and her lack of direct aggression (whilst responsible for numerous murders, Lydia never wields a gun or initiates any kind of physical confrontation herself). Given that these characteristics are often negatively associated with women and femininity, this makes me think about how Lydia’s gender is depicted in Breaking Bad - something worth thinking about, given that she’s one of only a few prominent female characters on a show which examines ideas about power, gender roles and masculinity.
