JESSAMYN’S YOGA ESSENTIALS: The Unsung Heroes of My Home Yoga Practice

1. MAT - Lululemon’s The Mat. It’s double-sided- the first side is made of polyurethane and it absorbs moisture very nicely during non-hot yoga. However, the second side is built for hot yoga- the more you sweat, the easier it is to grip into the mat. Lululemon might be sizephobic as all hell, but they definitely know their way around a yoga mat.

2. HEADBAND - Kobieta’s Bamboo Jersey Yoga Head Wrap. Not only does it keep my very unruly hair under control, it absorbs sweat like none other and protects my hair when I’m practicing notorious “hair ripper” poses like inversions and backbends. It’s also really soft and looks totally normal if you forget to take it off before heading to a lunch date. Not that I’ve done that or anything.

3. STRAP - Hand crocheted by my mom. Early in my home practice, she said the sight of me using a dog leash as a strap was too much for her to bear. I keep trying to convince her to open a yoga accessories Etsy shop- not to brag, but my strap is kind of the best ever.

4. POLISH - No matter what color I paint my toes, I consider Sally Hansen’s Triple Strength a necessity for my pedicures. Inversions involve a substantial amount of toe dragging aka the key to having a jacked up pedicure. Weekly professional gel pedicures are not part of my post-academia budget, but Triple Strength is a nice budget friendly option to help make sure my pedicures are not immediately ruined as soon as I start inverting.

5. TABLET - Oh, where would I be without my little Samsung Galaxy Tab 2? It’s small (7” screen), but just large enough for me to view classes on Yogaglo or listen to music on Spotify no matter where I’m practicing. Actually, speaking of spotify, check out my yoga music playlists if you need something to inspire your own practice. Yes, I’m a little obsessed with Kendrick Lamar.

6. SPEAKER - I bought the Ivation Bullet Bluetooth Speaker for my bike (so I can blare Dolly Parton and Ginuwine while hauling ass through downtown Durham, duh), but I find myself using it more during my yoga practice. Sometimes, when I’m thinking too much about a pose, it’s nice to have music or a teacher’s voice overrule my thoughts and this speaker is extremely helpful in that capacity.

7. BLOCK - Because I’ve been using a VHS box set as my primary yoga block for the better part of a year, I was unbelievably grateful when my friend Suzanne (@suzamama) gave me her old Gaim Yoga Block for my birthday. I don’t know if she knows it, but it’s one of the best (and most thoroughly used) gifts I’ve ever received.

Day 21 of #SizeDoesntMatter is #DowndogSplit (#EkaPadaAdhoMukhaSvanasana).

I always want to go deeper in this pose, but my hands always slide down my mat when I raise my extended leg. I can’t tell you how many times I have face planted in pursuit of downdog splits, y'all. It would probably be embarrassing if I had even a shred of shame. Anyway, today I thought to turn my mat over- my @lululemon #yoga mat is reversible and the black side is excellent for hot yoga because the base layer uses the sweat your body produces to help stick you to the mat (It’s called “The Mat” for those of you who are wondering). Anyway, I rarely think to flip my mat when I’m not practicing #hotyoga which is SO STUPID because I still get sweaty enough during my home practice to validate use of the second side.Using the second side, I was able to really dig in my hands to reach some of my deepest downdog splits ever. I am still reeling from the benefits of that stretch, y'all. So grateful. I am so thankful for this feeling. Namaste.

As much as I want to believe otherwise, the world of Western #yoga is not very inclusive of varied socio-economic backgrounds. While my home yoga bubble is very comforting and inclusive (DIY props and equipment, nudity encouraged, 4/20 friendly, all bodies are beautiful), I have to remind myself that my bubble is very much against the grain. The moment I step out into this community of retailers and studios, I’m constantly reminded of how much of our yoga world is fully focused on capitalism and money.

Unfortunately, this means that A LOT of people feel excluded from a practice which can be done without expensive mats or studios or even clothing. Legit, how is it possible that one of the least expensive forms of physical and spiritual exercise has morphed into a ravenous Western moneymaking machine? I feel like a bit of hypocrite, since I’m getting ready to roll out my expensive @lululemon mat and I definitely buy into many other aspects of this culture (WHATUP @yogajournal and @yogaglo annual subscriptions) but I resent how much of this community is only available to those with means. I don’t have a solution to this problem, but it probably helps to acknowledge that there is DEFINITELY a fucking problem. #yeahisaidit #firstworldproblems #camatkarasana #wildthingpose #backbends

In America, it’s pretty uncommon to see an employed single femme lounging poolside in the middle of the day on a Wednesday, absorbed in her cell phone and soaking in the sun. So today, while I was exercising/breakfasting/sunning myself by the pool, I made up little backstories for myself. For example, maybe my fellow hotel guests think I’m someone’s ‘not that hot but pleasantly fat’ trophy wife? Or maybe they think I’m an obnoxious American heiress who’s spending her family’s fast food empire fortune on pineapple juice and cheap sunglasses? And then I thought- why wouldn’t they just assume that I’m a hard-working freelance yoga teacher+writer who enjoys the luxury of being able to work remotely, therefore enabling her to work non-stop while doing fun things? Because even I, the person who is legit living this reality, have difficulty getting over society’s rules about work and (ESPECIALLY) about the way women are allowed to work. I mean, Y'ALL- EVEN MY BACKSTORIES WERE FILLED WITH MISOGYNISTIC UNDERTONES. On the real, that is how the patriarchy fucking gets you- it slips in when you’re a baby, festers throughout adolescence, and it’s not until you’re almost 30 that you realize you’re a female chauvinist pig, too. Sigh. Anyway, Dubai is beautiful- kind of insanely beautiful, honestly. And the @voyogauae fam has totally swept me up with love- I think all of my classes are sold out, but being on the wait list is never a bad idea! Thanks to my baby girl & (hopefully) baby mama Olivia, I’m giving away a FREE @Lululemon yoga mat AND a headband! I’ll post more info about the giveaway later this weekend, but if you want to see the stuff that two of you guys are going to win (& hear me ramble about the state of yoga materialism), click over to my snapchat (I’m @mynameisjessamy) and you can see everything up close and personal.
