I Like You When You Are Quiet

I like you when you are quiet because it is as though you are absent, and you hear me from far away, and my voice does not touch you. It looks as though your eyes had flown away and it looks as if a kiss had sealed your mouth. Like all things are full of my soul you emerge from the things, full of my soul. Dream butterfly, you look like my soul, and you look like a melancoly word. I like you when you are quiet and it is as though you are distant. It is as though you are complaining, butterfly in lullaby. And you hear me from far away, and my voice does not reach you: Let me fall quiet with your own silence. Let me also speak to you with your silence clear like a lamp, simple like a ring. You are like the night, quiet and constellated. Your silence is of a star, so far away and solitary. I like you when you are quiet because it is as though you are absent. Distant and painful as if you had died.

Pablo Neruda

The Signs // As Nice Poems

 Aries:
“You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise.”
- Maya Angelou, Still I Rise

Taurus:
“i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it (anywhere i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling) i fear”
- E. E. Cummings, I Carry Your Heart With Me

Gemini
“I am not yours, not lost in you, Not lost, although I long to be, Lost as a candle lit at noon, Lost as a snowflake in the sea. You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright”
- Sara Teasdale, I Am Not Yours

Cancer:
“I do not love you except because I love you; I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you; My heart moves from cold to fire.
I love you only because it’s you the one I love; I hate you deeply, and hating you, bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you, Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.”
- Pablo Neruda, I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You

Leo
“Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself. But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love;”
- Khalil Gibran, Love Chapter

Virgo
“I have no time for idle cares; Through gazing on the unquiet sky.
And when an hour with calmer wings; Its down upon my spirit flings-
That little time with lyre and rhyme; To while away- forbidden things!
My heart would feel to be a crime; Unless it trembled with the strings.”
- Edgar Allan Poe, Romance

Libra:
“I do wander everywhere, Swifter than the moon’s sphere;
And I serve the Fairy Queen, To dew her orbs upon the green;
The cowslips tall her pensioners be; In their gold coats spots you see”
- William Shakespeare, A Fairy Song

Scorpio:
“I have no wit, I have no words, no tears;My heart within me like a stone
Is numbed too much for hopes or fears; Look right, look left, I dwell alone;
A lift mine eyes, but dimmed with grief”
- Sylvia Plath, A Better Resurrection

Sagittarius:
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood; And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth”
- Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken

Capricorn
“I like you when you are quiet and it is as though you are distant.
It is as though you are complaining, butterfly in lullaby.
And you hear me from far away, and my voice does not reach you:
let me fall quiet with your own silence.”
- Pablo Neruda, I Like You When You Are Quiet

Aquarius:
“Lately your eyes have shut down to a shade more durable than skin’s. I know you love distance, how it smooths. You choose an aerial view, the city angled to abstraction, while I go for the close exposures”
- Alice Fulton, Yours & Mine

Pisces:
“I loved you first: but afterwards your love; outs oaring mine, sang such a loftier song; As drowned the friendly cooings of my dove.
Which owes the other most? my love was long, and yours one moment seemed to wax more strong”
- Christina Rossetti, I Loved You First: But Afterwards Your Love

Butterfly (Acapella)
Rajaton

Butterfly (Acapella) // Rajaton

And while I’m on the subject of Rajaton, I’ll also post this because it’s my favorite Rajaton song ever.

Love me, love me on the leaves

before we say goodbye.

Love me, kiss me with the breeze,

you’ll be my lullaby;

Tomorrow I’ll die

You’ll be my lullaby

His fingernails used to paint butterflies and love songs into the creases of my back. His voice used to whisper lullabies. And I used to have to remind him to drink water, because he would get so worked up over the hurt in the world, but I didn’t mind. Sometimes late at night I call him again. I whisper into the phone. I ramble on about butterflies and lullabies and water. He never calls me back. But I don’t mind anymore.
