Summary: Your married to Danny (Luke Evans) for a few years now. You guys started out strong, but over time the marriage slowing starts to fall a part. One night you decided to take off and enjoy yourself at a local lounge. There, you meet a man name Negan (JDM). He gives you all the attention of been needing and over time, you two begin to become close. How would things play out for the two of you? How would Danny take it once he finds out?
For the past couple of hours, I’ve sitting in a beautiful elegant restaurant. I’m in my favorite black lace dress and matching wedges. My hair done, nails done, and make up perfect. I should be having the time of my life, but, I wasn’t.
Because yet again, I find myself completely alone. Danny, my husband, once again forgot another anniversary.Just like he forgot holidays and birthdays, he just forgot them all. I tried calling, but I never got an answer back. I just got the check and headed on home.
When I got there, Danny wasn’t even home. Guess he was working late, again. I headed upstairs and got ready for bed, then went to sleep. I was only sleep for a couple of hours when I heard a noise from the hallway. I got up to check it out, it was Danny, drunk.
“There’s my girl.” Danny said, smiling as he stumbling into the bedroom. “How was your night?”
“It was fine.” I said, crossing my arms as he kicked his shoes off. “Where have you been?”
“With the boys.” Danny said, falling back on the bed. “We were watching the game and had drinks. My team won by the way.”
“That’s good.” I said, as he turned on the TV. “Glad you had fun.”
“Everything okay babe?” Danny said, putting his hands behind his head and looking over at me. “You look upset.”
“Yeah. I’m fine.” I said, nodding my head. “Actually… I’m not.”
“What’s wrong? Broke a nail or something?” Danny said smirking.
“You forgot again.” I said and he rise an eyebrow. “Our Anniversary. Our five year anniversary.”
“Fuck.” Danny said, closing his eyes and rubbing his face. “Babe.” He looked over at me as he sat up. “I’m sorry. I had a long day at work and I just wanted to take my mind off of things. I’ll make it up to you, I promise. I’ll take you to dinner tomorrow night if you want. We can go to that sushi place that opened up.”
“It’s alright.” I said, shaking my head. God, I hate sushi, you should know that. “I think I’m going to go back to bed.” I crawl back to bed and laying on my side, looking away from him. “You should to, you got work in the morning.”
“How about we don’t go to sleep and I…” Danny said, putting his arm around me as he start kissing my neck. “Can start making it up to you right now.”
“Please Danny.” I said, looking up at him as he looked down at me. “I’m not feeling well. I just want to sleep, please.”
He let out a sigh and nodded his head. I wrapped the blankets around me tight, trying not to cry. Danny always made promises that he’ll make it up to me, but he never does. He things sex is a cure all, when what would really cure it, is him just being there for me.
The next morning, Danny said for me to be ready by seven so he could take me to dinner. I got ready and sat there on the couch, waiting for him. I kept looking at the clock, watching time go by. I let out a sigh, when I saw it was nine a clock.
I did my usual routine when he didn’t show up. I went upstairs, got ready for bed and went to sleep, alone. And like his usual routine he comes in, making noise and smelling of beer. He would give me another excuse and another promise to make it up to me.
I really thought he was going to make it up to me the following week, my birthday. He had bought us tickets to the phantom of the opera, a play I’ve been dying to see. I got dress and waited for him to get home, so we could head out.
Yet again, I was sitting there waiting and waiting. I shook my head when I saw he was already over an hour late. I started heading upstairs to get ready for bed. I looked at myself in the mirror, seeing myself all doll up and going no where.
“You know what?” I said, talking to myself in the mirror. “It’s your birthday and you deserve to go out.”
I headed downstairs and called a taxi. I decided to visit a lounge that had just opened a couple of months ago. It was nice, wasn’t too nosy at all. I took a seat at the bar and order a drink. I just sat there, string it around as I looked at the happy couples.
“I should have just stayed home.” I said, in a low voice.
“Why you fucken say that?” I looked over at a man sitting next to me as he looked over at me. “So, why do you fucken say that doll face?”
“No reason.” I said, looking back at my drink.
“So it fucken has nothing to do with the couples sucking each others faces?” He said. I looked over at him as he chugged his drink and slammed it down. “Cause that’s why I was fucken thinking I should have stayed home.”
“Yeah.” I said and he looked over back at me. “That’s why I said that.” I went back to my drink. “This sucks.”
“Fucken tell me about it.” He said, waving at the bartender to pour him another drink. “I”m Negan by the way.” He offer me his hand. “What’s your name doll?”
“(Y/N)” I said, shaking his hand.
“Well nice to fucken meet you doll.” Negan said, smiling as he kiss my hand. Then he saw my wedding ring. “My fucken bad.” He let go of my ring. “I didn’t know you were taken.”
“It’s okay.” I said, string my drink.
“So why are you fucken here alone? Where is your husband at?” Negan said, drinking his whiskey.
“I don’t know.” I said, shrugging my shoulders. “He’s probably at the spots bar with his friends. We were suppose to go to the opera today for my birthday but, he never showed up.” I took a drink. “He never shows up.”
“Wait.” Negan said as we both looked at each other. “It’s your fucken birthday and your husband isn’t with you?” I nodded my head. “Take it hes going to say “He forgot”?” Using his fingers to do quotes. “What a douche.”
“Yeah.” I said, taking another drink. “He always forgets. Like our anniversaries, valentine’s day, dinners I had plan. Pretty much everything.”
“You know what? We need to get you a fucken cake.” Negan said, grabbing a menu and flipping to the dessert page “Which one do you want doll? Pick one out and I’ll fucken pay for it. I’ll pay for your drinks too.”
“Oh no Negan.” I said, shaking my head. “I don’t want you to pay for me.”
“Too fucken bad.” Negan said smiling at me. “It’s your birthday after all. Now” He pointed at the cake slices. “Which one do you fucken want?”
“Alright.” I said smiling as I looked at the cakes. “How about this one?” I pointed at a cookies and cream cake. “We can share it.”
“That’ just happen to be my fucken favorite.” Negan said, smiling at me.
We sat there, drinking and eating together. We talked for hours, laughing like we didn’t have a care in the world. Laughing, god I haven’t done that in months. I almost forgot what it was like to laugh, what it was like to be, happy.
Negan was so carefree and open, you could tell that by his cussing. It was over the top, but I liked it, it was, colorful. He told me about how him and his ex had broken up a couple of months ago, he was taking it a bit hard. He wanted to more and she wanted less, so he choice to walk away from it.
He said he hadn’t been out the whole time til tonight and he was glad he did. I had to admit, I was glad we both decided to go out tonight. I needed this, I needed someone to talk to. Someone that made me feel like I was someone again and not a nobody.
It was almost midnight when we decided to head out. Negan called a taxi for us and made sure I got home. Lucky me, Danny still wasn’t home, but for once, I didn’t care.
“So doll, this is were I fucken leave you.” Negan said, walking up to my door.
“Yeah.” I said, smiling. “Thank you Negan. I had fun tonight.”
“No fucken problem birthday girl.” Negan said, stepping closer to me. “Here’s a fucken birthday kiss for you.” He lean down and kiss my cheek. “Happy birthday (y/n).”
“Thank you Negan.” I said, blushing a bit. “So goodnight.”
“Yeah.” Negan said, looking down as he smile. He was blushing a bit too. “Goodnight doll face.” He looked up as he started walking backwards to the taxi. “So I’ll call you tomorrow and we can catch that fucken movie we were talking about. If that’s still alright with you doll?”
“Yeah that’s alright.” I said, smiling as I open my door. “But friends.”
“A course.” Negan said, smiling. “Just fucken friends.” He open the taxi door. “Goodnight doll.”
“Goodnight Negan.” I said, going inside and closing the door. I lean up against the door and let out a happy sigh. “I hope you do call tomorrow.”
And Negan did just that. Anytime we had plans, Negan always showed up. When he was running late, he always gave me the ends up about it. God, he was so much different than Danny was.
We were hanging out almost every day, if we weren’t hanging out we were on the phone. We were going to the movies, lunches, over to his place to watch TV, and we event went shopping together.
It was like that for weeks and I couldn’t be happier. Even with Danny forgetting our plans or coming home smelling like booze, it didn’t bug me. Hell, the man didn’t even notice when I came home after he did or didn’t come back home till the next day.
But like I said, it didn’t bug me, it didn’t bug me one bit. All because I had Negan, someone that was always there. I was happy and I was grateful for that, grateful for Negan. What else could make me more happier? My question was soon answer, when me and Negan went to a local diner one day. That day, everything change for us. But would it be for the better?
Luke stood in front the building he has spent most of his childhood in, the chilly breeze of the New York winter air flying past his nose. 9 years since he last stepped foot into the building, 9 years since he had been here at all. Nothing seemed to change, if anything, the building seemed to have formed a more homey, family-like glow to it.
Luke looked both ways before running across the street to the opposite sidewalk, weaving his way through the throng of people in business attire. The feeling of the revolving door he always went through as a child almost brought tears to his eyes, the glass against his calloused fingertips brought old memories to flash before his eyes. He made his way inside, the secretary behind the front desk the same one he had always seen coming in, except she had aged quite significantly. Like everyone else has while he was gone.
The secretary looked up and was about to speak but she paused, her face full of shock. “M-Mr. Hemmings… Yo-you’re back…?” she questioned. Luke smiled softly, bringing a hand out of his coat pockets to give a small wave.
“Hello, Lora. How have you been?” he answered, walking over to her, and giving her an unexpected hug. She hesitated, stuttering.
“I-I’m fine, s-sir. Whe-Where have you been?”
Luke shrugged and made his way to the elevator, turning back to her while he waited.
“Exploring. I guessed it was time to come back.” He gave one last smile before he disappeared before elevator doors, leaving the secretary speechless.
The few minutes he had alone as the elevator ascended was spent thinking of the last time he saw you. The hurt in your eyes, the hatred, the anger. He still hasn’t properly forgiven himself for that. he wondered where you were now, how you were doing, if you were with anybody. 9 years and you still occupied his mind, his soul unresting.
The elevator stopped, signaling its arrival and Luke stepped out, everyone buzzing around to get stuff done. He smiled at the scene, something he had always remembered being annoyed at but now that he looks back, it was a great part of his past years.
No one else seemed to notice his presence as he headed to the large office in the back, his father’s name on the plaque now replaced. He took a deep breath before opening the door to an older version of Michael and his little son playing footie in the office.
Luke hasn’t seen any of his best mates since before they went to college. He isolated himself and went away to pursue a different lifestyle, away from the lifestyle he thought he had always wanted.
Michael aged significantly, too. His stance looked more serious than it did when they were just teenagers but Luke seeing him in slacks and a dress shirt with a tie around his neck was something he thought he would never see in his life. Stubble adorned Michael’s face and crinkles now formed around his eyes whenever he smiled, an obvious sign of aging, and he packed a bit more muscle than he did the last time Luke saw him.
“Come on, Danny, you can’t beat Daddy,” Michael taunted his little son, who Luke assumed was about 3. A giggle escaped the toddler’s mouth as he juggled the small football between his tiny feet.
“No, Daddy, you’re too old!”
Michael stood up straight and rested his arms against his hips, a smile playing on his lips.
“27 isn’t too old!”
“But you’re a lot older than me!”
Luke smiled at the interaction between father and son as he leaned against the doorway, still not noticed by Michael as he was too occupied with his son.
Little Danny Clifford giggled as he kicked the ball between Michael’s legs, crawling in between them to shoot the ball into their makeshift goal. He let out a small cheer as Michael groaned jokingly at his son’s victory. “You lost, Daddy! I’m better at you and I’m only turning thwee!” Little Danny teased, tugging on his father’s slacks. Michael shook his head and leaned down to pick him up, blowing a raspberry on his cheek.
“You’d think that all those football lessons would’ve given you a fair advantage against a three year old.”
Michael’s head shot up towards Luke. Confusion, happiness, with a little bit of frustration, flashed though his emerald eyes but that didn’t stop him from putting down his son and pulling Luke into a tight hug. “9 years man. 9 fucking years and you just show up randomly?” Michael chuckles, holding Luke at arms length as he inspected him.
Luke looked like he hadn’t aged at all. There were small changes, such as crinkles by the eyes, same with Michael, and he definitely worked out more. He was fresh shaven with a small amount of stubble littering his jawline and neck and he definitely seemed broader, and taller if possible, than Michael had remembered.
“Well, it definitely was a surprise, wasn’t it?” Luke chuckled.
“Where have you been the past decade? You could’ve at least contacted us to tell us how you’ve been.”
“I’ve been in London actually. Exploring. Helping with record labels.”
“I uhm, I’m a producer now actually. I keep it on the down low though. Use an alias for credits. I wanted to stay anonymous, secretive.”
“Why? You just left without a trace.”
‘I kept in touch with my family, of course. I just- I couldn’t face you guys after what happened with y/n at graduation. So I left. First time visiting in a decade.”
Michael stayed still, nodding at Luke’s words. It was silent until Danny started tugging on Michael’s pants, wanting affection from his dad. “Daddy, who is this?” he asked. Michael smiled down at him and back at Luke before picking the little boy up and resting his small figure on his hip, facing towards Luke.
“Daniel, this is Uncle Luke. He’s one of my best friends.”
Danny seemed confused and looked up at his father.
“But I thought it was only Uncle Ashy and Uncle Cally,” the little boy muttered.
“Uncle Luke has been exploring the world! That’s why you haven’t seen him yet.”
Danny nodded and blinked at Luke, holding out his arms. Luke seemed confused and surprised but took the little boy in his arms anyway.
“Where were you? You weren’t at my football game!” the toddler asked, messing with Luke’s hair.
“Sorry, bud. I’ve just been exploring, like your dad said.”
“Is it fun? To go exploring?”
“Yeah, it is. You should go exploring when you get older.”
Danny nodded, smiling widely. Luke turned back towards Michael as Danny ran off somewhere.
“Didn’t know you were married, lad,” Luke chuckled, as he spotted Michael playing with the wedding band on his left finger. Michael chuckled, nervously. heading over to his mini fridge and fetching two bottles of water, handing one to Luke.
“9 years does that to you, mate. Shoulda been there for the wedding.”
“Who’s the gal?”
Michael sighed and took a drink of his water, looking at Luke seriously.
“That’s the thing, uhm. We wanted to tell you but we couldn’t get in contact and we invited you to the wedding and the baby shower through your parents, but you wouldn’t answer back. Uh-”
“Mate, she’s your wife. Why do you sound so nervous about telling me?” Luke chuckles, confusingly. Michael sighs heavily and before he gets to utter a word, Danny starts yelling.
“Okay, next time, we’re making Sydney take care of the birthday preparations. This baby bump is making it hard to walk around.”
Luke freezes. He never thought he would ever hear that voice again, and he never thought those words would accompany it. He turned his head slightly towards the woman he had spent nearly a decade trying to forget but there you were, in your trench coat and heels with your hair messed by the wind, in all your pregnant glory.
You walked up to Michael and pressed a soft kiss to his lips with Danny teetering between your hip and falling, with your swollen stomach in the way.
“How was the trip, love?” Michael muttered, resting his hands on your stomach.
“Hated it. Airborne with a pregnant woman does not sound entertaining at all. Just ask Cas. He’s been annoyed at me ever since we got on the plane. Plus planning Danny’s party tonight almost made him wish he was drunk the whole week but then he concluded that being hungover and with a pregnant woman would be worse. I agree with tha- Luke?”
Luke smiles softly at you, also noticing all the changes that have happened the past decade. Your lips seemed more kissable now that you’ve matured and he was just craving to give you a well-deserved hi-I’m-back kiss but of course he knew better, with the bump and the shiny ring on your finger basically a red light to all his thoughts. And plus, Michael wouldn’t like that very much.
“H-How have you been?” you asked him, tears prickling in your eyes as you reached up, even in your heels, to give him a hug. Luke nuzzles his head in your hair as he cherishes your touch, something he hasn’t had in a long time.
Michael doesn’t even seem bothered by it. He just smiles and leaves the room with Danny to give you and Luke some time to talk some things out.
“I’ve been good. Gone, but good. How about you?”
You chuckled, disconnecting from the hug and looking up at him.
“Pregnant but everything’s good.”
Luke nodded and it was awkward between you two for a few moments before finally Luke took a deep breath and started speaking.
“So, uh, you and Michael, huh?”
“Yeah, yeah, we uhm, we were gonna tell you a few months after we started going out but we couldn’t get a hold of you but uhm, yeah.”
“So how did you and Michael get together?”
You sighed and sat in one of the chairs, Luke taking a seat in front of you.
“Well, uhm, when we broke up after graduation, I couldn’t really trust anyone, really and 2 years after graduation, while I was in Paris, I bumped into Michael while I was out getting coffee for one of our fall runway shows. I hated him at first and tried to avoid him but he was persistent. I couldn’t trust any of you guys since I found out about the bet and uhm, I gave in.
We hung out a few times before he had to leave to go back here and I noticed how much he’s matured since we left high school. We were on the topic of the reunion, which you missed, so I asked him about you. He told me that you left a few months after we graduated and haven’t contacted any of them since. And on the day of the reunion a few months after he left Paris, we started hanging out more regularly since Casper, Sydney, and I were back here for some fashion events and that’s when he told me that since you went away, your dad handed him ownership of the company. I also reunited with Ashton and Calum, who are now successful lawyers and are happily married.
And then, uh, Michael. He asked me out. I couldn’t really trust him yet but I said yes to the date anyways. We hit it off but still, a few months in I was questioning where our relationship was going but then he promised me, this time, there were no lies, no secrets, no games, nothing. It was either tell everything or lose everything. Worked out pretty well, few fights here and there but resolved with no harm done so after 3 years and some months of being together, we got married. I was pregnant with Danny during the wedding, too. We found that out during the honeymoon.”
You finished with a nervous chuckle while Luke smiled and nodded. Silence once again overcame the both of you and it was once again Luke who broke it.
“Are you happy?”
Your head shot up at his question and you looked at him confused.
“Are you happy?”
“Yes, of course, Luke what-”
“Do you love me?”
Your features softened and you looked at him sadly, his eyes starting to water.
“Please. Just- Answer me, please.”
“A part of me still does, yes, but I’m already bound to Michael now, and to our children. I loved you as much as I do Michael once, Luke, but I’ve moved on. Please, if you still love me after all these years, just do this one thing.”
With his face in your hands, he looks up as a tear escapes his eyes.
“What is it?”
“You pick up your feelings, give them to someone else and move. On.”
“I don’t know if I can-”
You press your lips against his in an attempt to stop him, and an attempt to encourage him. It was wrong to kiss him, but Michael would’ve understood. He knows a part of you still loved Luke.
Luke’s body relaxes and he blinks at you once you depart.
“I’ve missed that,” he chuckles, wiping away the stray tears.
“I do too, believe me. But Luke, please. We had our chance. It’s time.”
Luke nods and stands up, pulling you in for one last embrace.
“I’ll try. I’ll try for you, princess.”
You close your eyes and bite your lip as you wrap your arms around him, resting your forehead against his shoulder. You’ve missed the sound of his voice, his warmth, his raspy voice accompanying the pet names. But that was all in the past. You’ve already moved on.
“Thank you,” you whisper.
You stay in each other’s arms for a little longer before detaching, chuckling as you wiped the tears away.
“Well, I, uhm, I have to get Danny home. And you probably have somewhere to be.”
“I actually have to meet with someone but that’s not until tomorrow.”
You nod in response and pick up your purse, giving Luke a peck on the cheek as a goodbye before opening the door, but you paused and turned back to him.
“Tonight’s Danny’s birthday party at our house. You should come,” you tell him. Luke shakes his head and rubs the back of his neck, chuckling.
“I don’t think I’d be welcome there.”
“It’s my house, Lucas and I’m inviting you, of course you’d be welcomed there. And plus, it’d be nice seeing everyone again after 9 years.”
You shoot him one last smile and leave, hearing Danny’s excited cheers in the hallway. Luke smiles and replays your words, heading out of the office and out of the building, but not before giving Michael a goodbye and telling him he might see him later, to which he smiles and agrees to. Luke walks to his hotel for the week, paying attention to the city that he left, trying to remember all the small details of the place he once inhabited.
Maybe coming back will finally put his soul to rest.
