“There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable… I simply am not there.”
I also want everyone to know that I literally procrastinated writing chapter four by reading the Carmen novella, because I decided why not. I might as well learn more about Ann’s Persona and god damn, no wonder you get a charm boost from reading the book!! Holy hell, Carmen knows her shit!!
Anyways, I’m naming Carmen’s Heart Guys José and Lucas because reasons that involve me being too lazy to leave them nameless.
Lucas is the Heart Guy Carmen has hanging in the air from a leash made of rose thorns, since Lucas is a picador in the novella that she JUST started charming near the end of the book, so basically Lucas is the guy who got dragged along. Meanwhile José is the Heart Guy she steps on, José being the guy she basically had wrapped around her finger for quite some time because he fell HARD for her and did a lot of things for her that pretty much ruined his life (he killed men out of jealousy for Carmen, that’s how he became her husband since he got rid of her previous one. Their first meeting ended with José getting demoted for letting Carmen go after she cut an X on a woman’s face using the knife she used to cut cigars at the factory she was working at).
He’d do just about anything for her, which I think fits well for José to be the Heart Guy she steps on. Of course, José does end up killing Carmen after trying to get her to stay with him and stop her from charming any more guys, like she usually does (he says he can’t keep killing them off like he has been doing). He tries to convince her to start a new life in America with him. She refuses because Carmen is free and she’d rather die than give up her freedom. And so she dies, but not without saying that she knew he would be the one to kill her.
You know, the Lovers Arcana usually deals with making a choice. And another depiction is of a man having to choose between two women, which is exactly the plot of Catherine. Catherine is the embodiment of the Lovers Arcana and I honestly like how well it actually fits Carmen since she chooses freedom, which does happen to be a possible outcome in Catherine. Lol, I might just be reaching but fuck it, it interests me.
Well that’s enough procrastinating for me, I should get back to writing!!
