My name is Lt. Aldo Raine and I’m putting together a special team, and I need me eight soldiers. Eight Jewish-American soldiers. Now, y'all might’ve heard rumors about the armada happening soon. Well, we’ll be leaving a little earlier. We’re gonna be dropped into France, dressed as civilians. And once we’re in enemy territory, as a bushwhackin’ guerrilla army, we’re gonna be doin’ one thing and one thing only… killin’ Nazis.
Inglourious Basterds (2009) dir. Quentin Tarantino
Okay, so I’ve been re-watching “Inglorious Basterds” all weekend, and I’ve been putting a lot of thought into Aldo’s character, especially the very prominent scar that can be seen on his neck.
Okay, so after digging around on the Basterds wiki, I’ve learned that all that has been divulged about this scar is that it is rumored to be from a lynching. Which got me thinking:
What if Aldo is married to a black or multi-racial woman? Or has/had one as a sweetheart? Or a best friend?
He mentions his Tennessee roots several different times throughout the film, and, given the period of time that the movie takes place in, an inter-racial relationship would not have been looked upon with favor, especially in the South. This could explain the whole “lynching” thing, in theory. It could also add to the reason why he carries so much hate for Nazis. I mean, yes, Nazis are bad, obviously, and everyone wants them gone. But they didn’t just persecute Jews; they went for various others, including multi-racial people.
Aldo isn’t Jewish, but carries an amazing passion for his cause that makes his crusade seem really…personal. And, again, I’m not saying that you have to be Jewish to want to stand up against the genocide of millions of people (not all of whom were Jewish anyway).
