Black tea

Think black tea makes you feel good? You’re right. It’s been proven to help you de-stress fast. It also helps eliminate bad breath. Plus medical research indicates that it lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and reduces bad cholesterol.

Green tea

Want to stay slim, trim and beautiful? The antioxidants in green tea just might slow signs of aging, prevent the flu and raise your metabolism. More dramatically, it’s being shown to prevent and slow cancer, and help with arthritis and bad cholesterol too.

Oolong tea

This one’s known as a fat-buster in China, and science is indicating that it does indeed speed up your metabolism, burn fat and block fat absorption! Use it to fight expanding waistlines, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

White tea

Science is saying that white tea might be more effective than even green tea at preventing cell damage, shrinking cancerous tumours and stopping the growth of cancer cells. Plus it’s becoming the new cosmetic fix for aging skin. Beautiful!

Pu’erh tea

Traditional Chinese medicine prizes Pu’erh as a wonder tea. It’s said to aid digestion, cleanse the blood and help with weight loss. Studies in Europe are also saying it busts cholesterol as effectively as some medications.

Rooibos tea

It’s said that rooibos helps you recover from hangovers, and that it could slow dementia. Plus there’s evidence that it fights skin cancer and boosts the immune system. And it’s supposed to help with insomnia!

Yerba tea

Yerba mate is a fabulous stimulant, without the jitters. It’s also full of antioxidants, so there’s scientific speculation that it could have anti-cancer properties, help stimulate the immune system and protect against disease.

Herbal tea

Herbs, spices, fruits and flowers have long been used in traditional medicine to cure everything from headaches, stomach bugs and colds to stress and insomnia. The power of the tea depends on its ingredients.

So we’re in combat and one of our players wants to try out a certain move but is asking the DM a question about it first. The monster had reach and the player was low on health, so he wanted to avoid an attack of opportunity to lower the risk of him getting knocked out.

About half of all U.S. deaths from heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes are linked to poor diets, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

And eating more — or less — of just 10 types of food can help raise or lower the risk of death from these causes.

Scientists at Tufts University identified the foods that seem to contribute the most to the risk. At the top of the list? Salt. Next, the high intake of red meat and processed meats such as bacon was linked to 8 percent of the deaths. And sugary drinks were a factor in 7.4 percent of the deaths.

Zen (this turned out really long whoops)

  • A lot of his fans were jealous of you, so you got a lot of hate for being “to ugly and fat for Zen”
  • You were home alone as he was at rehearsal, so he couldn’t scold you for looked down at your thighs in disgust
  • They were faint, but the old scars on them gave you an idea. You hadn’t done it in a long time, but you remembered that it did feel calming to a certain degree
  • You went to the bathroom, popped out a blade from your razor, took a deep breath and let yourself feel that familiar burning
  • Suddenly you heard the front door open and Zen’s voice telling you he was home early
  • You scrambled to find something to wipe the blood away with, and ended up just messily wiping it away with a paper towel before pulling on a pair of his sweatpants and going out to greet him
  • He smiled when he saw you, then frowned
  • “Princess, I feel rude to ask, but are you on your period? You’ve got blood on your pants”
  • Shocked, you looked down and saw that the cuts appearantely were too deep for your messy wiping, so there was quickly growing blood spots on your legs
  • Zen was no stranger to people with bad mental health around him as he was a public figure, so he quickly suspected what you had done
  • When he saw that the spots got bigger his fears were confirmed, and you saw his entire face fall
  • “I-I can explain…”
  • He cupped your face and looked straight into your eyes with the saddest look you had ever seen 
  • “Listen here… I know a lot of my fans don’t treat you right, is that it?”
  • His worried stare was too intense, so you looked down with tears in your eyes and just nodded
  • He sighed and pulled you close to him, kissing your head
  • “I love you so much, it hurts me too… But harming yourself won’t do anything good, you understand that? Can I see..?”
  • Hesitantely, you nodded again and pulled down the pants so he could see, and he got down on his knees and started kissing your thighs, not caring that they were bloody
  • “I love every single part of you, you understand that? Let’s go clean and wrap this up, I will protect you. Even if it’s from yourself”


Yoosung

  • He convinced you to cook with him
  • You were supposed to make cookies, but the only thing you managed to make was a total mess
  • By the time you finally got them into the oven, you both had dough and flour all over from the food war you had
  • He offered to clean some up from you, and when you agreed he blushed and kissed you
  • When you smiled into the kiss because he tasted like cookie dough, he gained confidence and slowly pushed you back to the wall, where he pinned your wrists over your head
  • You moaned softly in suprise as he wasn’t usually this dominant and it was really hot I’m always a slut for dominant Yoosung
  • Wanting to see what effect he had on you he pulled away for just a second, when his eyes were pulled to where he was holding your wrists
  • The sleeves you usually made sure were always covering your scars had rolled down to your elbows, revealing all of them
  • You saw his eyes go from filled with lust to filled with worry, and you looked away from him in shame
  • “They’re all old… Right?”
  • You nodded and he sighed relieved, before he hugged you tight
  • “You mean so much for me, I don’t want you to ever feel like that again. Please talk to me if you feel bad, okay? Can you promise me that?”
  • You agreed and he kissed your head
  • “I think it’s time for cookies and cuddles”


Jaehee

  • You had such a crush on her, but she was either really oblivious or just didn’t like you back
  • No matter what the reason was, it really hurt and you couldn’t help but feel insecure when all of your flirting got turned down
  • You really didn’t want to stoop so low as to go back to your old self harm habits, but it was so hard
  • In addition to the fact that you lived with her, the stress of running a café and your parents not accepting that you had a crush on a girl, it all got too much for you
  • One day when she was grocery shopping, you couldn’t help but find a small knife in the kitchen, locking your bedroom door and resume your old habit
  • You tried to keep them relatively shallow so they would heal quicker and lower your risk of getting caught, but once you started you found it hard to stop
  • You sobbed softly but because of that you didn’t hear Jaehee return from the store
  • Not finding you in the couch where she left you, she wandered around the appartment untill she heard you and stopped in front of your room
  • “MC? What’s wrong?”
  • When you didn’t answer she got worried, found a spare key and unlocked the door with a warning
  • You didn’t even bother trying to hide what you were doing, you just hung your head in shame as she gasped in shock
  • “W-what do you think you’re doing? Give me that knife!”
  • She quickly took it from you, ran to the bathroom to get a first aid kit and found you full on crying on the bed
  • Putting bandages on your wrists she softly said “Shh… I don’t know why you did this and you don’t need to tell me if you don’t want to, but please know that this isn’t going to make anything better”
  • When this just made you cry harder, she kissed your newly bandaged wrist
  • “I… I care way too much about you to see you like this, you should know that. Please come to me if you ever feel like this, okay? I can’t ever lose my reason for happiness”


Jumin

  • Whenever the two of you made out, you would always stop him when his hands started roaming under your shirt
  • Which he thought was fair, considering that your relationship was still new and you probably just weren’t comfortable enough with him yet
  • A few weeks after you started dating he offered to take you on a vacation, figuring you needed it after the stress of the party and hacker and all that
  • With Elizabeth the 3rd safely at V’s house and a mansion by a private beach rented for the weekend, he wanted to spend some time alone with you
  • He was suprisingly fond of the beach and wanted you to take you swimming there, but you kept declining
  • Kind of upset, he asked if there was any spesific reason why
  • You shrugged it off and said that you just weren’t in the mood, that you were tired and wanted to nap instead
  • He encouraged you to do as you pleased, not showing how hurt he was that you declined his offer
  • An hour or so after you had fallen asleep, he got bored and went to check on you and saw you sleeping, your shirt riled up revealing dozens of scars on your belly
  • His heart broke when he realized that was probably why you were so insecure about intimacy and going swimming
  • Careful not to wake you up, he hovered over you on bed and kissed your stomach
  • Despite his efforts you still woke up, and squeeled suprised when you saw him practially praising your biggest insecurity
  • “Kitten, I don’t ever want to see you do this again, but please understand that I love everything about you and you have nothing to be ashamed of. You’re like a tiger, these stripes show that you are strong. Promise to not hide yourself from me anymore, okay?”

  • Yet again he was doubting your love and pushing you away
  • He yelled when you tried to hug him, not knowing that the reason why you were clingy was that you were feeling like shit and needed to be comforted
  • You knew you were overreacting when you stopped by the bathroom to get a razor before returning to your shared bed (that he rarely used), but it just hurt so much that he didn’t trust you even after months of living together
  • Taking a deep breath, you pulled the leg of your pants and traced the outline if your old scars on your shin with the razor blade
  • Seven did realize how much he had hurt you, and just to be sure he checked the security camera he had installed in your room
  • When he saw that you were hurting himself he rose from his chair and ran to the bedroom, desperate to stop you
  • “Stop what you’re doing right now!”
  • You looked at him with tears in your eyes and yelled “so now you care?!”
  • With a firm look he pulled up the sleeve of his hoodie, showing his own scars and cuts
  • Taken back, you looked confused at him
  • He just smiled sad
  • “I know life is hard, okay? I know I am a shitty boyfriend, a shitty brother, a shitty person. But that doesn’t mean you are, do you understand that? It might not seem like it right now, but I really do love you. Like, I really love you. Can we make a deal? If you try to never do it again, so will I”
  • You nodded and hugged him, both of you apologizing for not being there for each other

  • Being practically blind, he depened a lot on his touch
  • Because of this, he had really sensitive finger tips
  • As weeks passed and you got closer to the handsome photographer, you let him touch and explore more and more of you
  • His new favorite hobby was to just run his hands over your smooth skin, trying to picture exactly what you looked like
  • During a particularly steamy makeout session you were on his lap, his hand travelling up your thighs where he could feel raised lines on your otherwise close to perfect skin
  • Pulling away from the kiss and raising an eyebrow questioningly, he kept tracing the lines
  • You hesitated before you admitted that you had self harmed, and he asked you if you had any other scars

  • When you confirmed that you didn’t, he held you closer and kissed your nose

  • He didn’t like to admit it, but something about you pulled him towards you
  • The way you always put up with his bursts of anger and sadness and comforted him, made him care for you more and more as time passed
  • So when he saw you sleeping on the couch, his first reacting was to smile as you looked cute and carefree
  • And as he did find you quite attractive (not that he would ever admit that), he couldn’t help but let his eyes roam over your sleeping body
  • When he saw the scars and cuts on your wrist where your shirt had riled up your arms, he got mad
  • ?? Who had dared to hurt someone as nice as you??
  • He woke you up suprisingly gently, wanting to know who he needed to kill
  • Disoriented from sleeping, you said that he didn’t need to worry but he refused to give up, so he asked his brother
  • He admitted that he had seen you harm yourself but hadn’t really figured a way to confront you about it yet
  • Saeran got even more mad and walked back to the couch where you had gotten up and was now lazily stretching
  • “Why the fuck are you hurting yourself? Explain!” he growled and pushed you against the wall
  • Stuttering and ashamed you explained that it was a way to deal with sadness, but he didn’t get it at all
  • “Giving yourself another type of pain will just make you more sad, you idiot! God, what’s wrong with you?”
  • Hearing the guy you were crushing on saying this to you and literally growling made you tear up, and you saw his expression change to one of sorrow
  • “I-I’m sorry, okay? It’s just… You’ve helped me so much and I want to return the favor, but I have no idea how to. You… You are special, I don’t want you to be sad”
  • You met his eyes and saw how sincere he was, and was suprised when he hugged you tight
  • “Please don’t ever do it again, MC”

There’s a rich body of evidence that links chocolate to heart health.

Now comes a new study that finds people who consume small amounts of chocolate each week have a lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation, a heart condition characterized by a rapid or irregular heartbeat.

“The rate of atrial fibrillation was 20 percent lower for people consuming two to six servings [of chocolate] per week” compared with people who ate chocolate less than once per month, explains study author Elizabeth Mostofsky, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The findings are published in the journal BMJ Heart.

can i rant about something that i feel like is super important yet extremely understated? ok here goes:

heath care givers, scientists, and other health advocates oftentimes overlook the obstacle that poverty has on cancer prevention. i’m not talking about treatment, which we all know can absolutely devastate a family’s finances. i’m talking about the “simple” and “easy” day-to-day lifestyle actions that can dramatically decrease one’s risk of certain cancers, and how they can be hard to achieve when money is tight. 

take sunscreen for example. sun protection is the #1 best way to decrease one’s risk of skin cancer, the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer. but sunscreen can be a luxury when that ~$6/bottle needs to be spent on food, or saved up penny by penny for utilities or rent. and take into consideration that many low-wage jobs are spent outdoors, like farm workers. 

diet and exercise–other great ways to lower the risk of certain cancers (and other diseases). but the ratio of fast-food places to grocery stores with fresh produce can be extremely skewed in poorer neighborhoods. and then think about how much $5 can buy in terms of fresh vegetables and fruits (and then other ingredients to cook them with, along with the utilities to keep them fresh/cooked well) vs items from the dollar menu at mcdonalds. i see so many ads calling for the “mediterranean diet” to prevent cancer, and i always think… ok that’s pricey. fish is pricey. also if i was someone who worked a labor-intensive job, and only had $3 to spend on lunch, would i go for a low-calorie salad, or a high-calorie high-protein burger? 

and trying to jog through unsafe streets, without access to nearby and well-maintained parks? not easy. 

and then there’s cancer prevention routines at the clinic–like mammograms and pap smears and visits to the dermatologist to get a mole checked out. covered by insurance or not, these procedures involve having that time off from work/other responsibilities, and having the transportation to get to the clinic. again, very real obstacles for those who can’t afford them. 

none of what i’m saying here is new, nor is it isolated to just cancer prevention. talk to anyone experiencing or has experienced poverty about these concerns and they’ll say “well duh”. but the thing is that we–the people advocating for these “simple” cancer/other disease prevention strategies–are not listening to them and making the necessary changes to society. all i hear from scientists and doctors is “prevention is key!!!” and yes, that’s true, but i want to yell back “well what are you doing to address the societal and financial barriers to that!! your fancy DNA test to detect cancer early is neato and all but can everyone afford it!!!” 

and i get it. sometimes we as scientists and doctors can’t really have control over this (money has to come from somewhere, and we all have mouths to feed). but as a society, a community of people who can care for others, there are things we can do: raise minimum wage. have better employee benefits like more personal time off (to go to clinics). expand public transportation. have affordable universal healthcare. aliquot more government spending on scientific research to offset costs. promote neighborhood gardens, parks, better infrastructure (without gentrification). end the cycle of poverty and crime by means other than prison (like reaching out and understanding mental health needs, improving public education, etc). basically make the fundamental changes to society so the downstream effect is that people can realistically afford positive impacts to their health. 

bottomline: we can’t hope to prevent or cure cancer–or any other disease–until we address affordability and accessibility. a new diagnostic test is sweet and all, but it does absolutely nothing if it can’t actually help people

ah yes, the dreaded animal rights agenda

lower our contribution to the harm and death of animals

stop polluting the oceans and destroying the land through animal agriculture

lower our risk of dying from the top killers of humankind in western civilisation, therefore lowering our need for modern medicinal drugs, therefore loosening the grip pharmaceutical industries have on us

NO!! THAT’S WAY TOO EXTREME !!!!!!!

12: dairy is one of the worst foods for our skin, so many people notice that their acne or eczema improves massively after going vegan
13: once you learn how to perfect the art of cooking and preparing tofu, it is the gift that just keeps on giving. So versatile & delicious!
14: you will learn not to discriminate between animal species, and take a stand against ALL unnecessary cruelty & exploitation everywhere
15: you’ll learn labels like free range are senseless as long as NO suffering/exploitation is preferable to reduced suffering/exploitation

19: if you’re reading this, that means you are not a baby calf, so there is absolutely no need to be drinking breast milk from a mother cow
20: antibiotics in the meat industry are responsible for drug resistant bacteria, eating meat may increase risk of exposure to this bacteria
21: a healthy vegan diet can help prevent the majority of cardiovascular diseases
22: we desperately need to stop eating fish, if we don’t, we could see entirely depleted, fishless oceans as early as 2048
23: vegan food is versatile, affordable, colourful, filling & delicious - not “rabbit food” as some ignorant people say
24: according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, eating a vegan diet is an effective way to lower your risk of strokes
25: you can happily bite into a big, delicious burger without the worry of chomping on a piece of fatty gristle or sinew!
26: even unhealthy vegan food usually isn’t AS bad as animal junk foods -you can typically eat MORE of the foods you like & still feel good!
27: chances are you’re lactose intolerant whether you’re aware of it or not & will feel far less heavy, bloated & gassy by giving up dairy
28: a plant-based diet is an internal deoderizer - eating vegan can actually change and improve bad body odour
29: veganism (especially vegan activism) can give your life a massive sense of purpose, it feels utterly amazing to help and save others
30: if you love wild/exotic animals, you should be vegan - animal agriculture is the leading cause of habitat loss and species extinction
31: when you meet a fellow vegan, you often instantly feel this wonderful connection & understanding and have so much to talk about!
32: you can take part in single issue campaigns (Sea World, fur, etc.) without seeming hypocritical - ALL animals need freedom from harm

37: going vegan reduces your carbon footprint significantly more than giving up driving a car does
38: vegan restaurants are creative & use ingredients I’d never even heard of as an omni - I’d never have tried jackfruit, tempeh or seitan!
39: the vegan community can be massively helpful, friendly and supportive, you could make so many new like-minded friends!
40: vegetarianism is not enough, the egg & dairy industries have practises and elements as cruel as (if not crueller than) the meat industry
41: waking up in the morning feeling passionate about a cause that you can help every day might be the closest you feel to being a superhero
42: you will be boycotting the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest, up to 91% of the destruction has been caused by animal agriculture
43: you’ll learn that a lot of the joy & pleasure from food comes from seasoning & preparation, not from whether it’s an animal or a plant
44: going to protests, demonstrations, vigils & marches is so exhilarating and really affirms how you are part of a social justice movement
45: veganism might help you grow into a more compassionate and understanding person as a whole, not just towards animals
46: eating meat can harm native carnivores that are killed to protect animal agribusiness, such as seals in Scotland and wolves in America
47: if you don’t need animal products to live a happy, healthy & comfortable life, there is simply no valid reason to keep on consuming them

A Guide to a Successful Training Session

Training birds, or any animal for that matter, can be done by essentially anyone who’s willing to put in the time but there’s a few things that many people tend to overlook.  The difference between a trusting, responsive bird and one who may learn slowly or only preform under certain circumstances lies in these fine details.

Motivation

 Motivation is how much the bird desires to work for you, whether you use a primary motivator (food) or a secondary motivator (stimulation) your bird has to be motivated to work for it!  This typically means reducing those motivators from their every day lives and using them solely for training.

If you’re using physical touch or a toy as a motivator this means letting the bird play with the toy less so they look forwards to playing with it during training.

For food, it can be a little more complicated depending on how you do it.

 The preferred method of food reward if to just alter the feeding schedule, do training first and feed meals afterwards, I wouldn’t be interested in working for cake if I just had a three course meal, would you?  I prefer this method because it’s safer, you don’t risk lowering their body weight or making them ill.  The most common method used is weight management, reducing up to 5% of the bird’s regular meal and filling that 5% with treats during training.  Using the weight management method requires careful attention paid to their weight through weighing them daily and recording their weights, ensuring the weigh does not drop below 5% it’s original weight and definitely no lower than 10% as that risks serious health issues.  I don’t like this method because of these risks but for some birds, they will just continually eat and gain weight which puts them at risk of other health issues (like fatty liver disease) at which point that method becomes necessary to allow the bird to stay at a healthy weight and train effectively.

Behaviour and Communication

 Watching your bird’s body language and how you are able to communicate with the bird is the only way you’ll be able to teach a concept, if neither of you know what the other is saying you will get nowhere!

If your bird is starting to play more than it wants to train, is looking around, chewing the perch, and overall seeming disinterested, that’s you bird telling you that they don’t want to do this anymore and it’s time to end the session before they get grumpy.  If you’re trying to teach a trick that involved being in close proximity to your bird and they’re starting to nibble your hands or show defensive behaviours, that’s them telling you that they aren’t ready to move that far yet and you need to back up and slow down the process until they’re ready for you to get that close.  Pushing a bird past these obvious lines of communication will more than likely result with them flying away or just biting you.

Along with you understanding how to read the bird the bird needs to understand how to read you.  How do you accomplish this?  Start off with basic concepts like target training and clicker recognition, these simple things allow the bird to understand how to do something for a reward, they start to acknowledge your body language and how it’s directing them to preform and action and will help them know when they’ve done something right as well as how that progresses in to a larger concept.

 A consistent bridging device is the best way to communicate a correct behaviour to your bird.  A bridging device is a word or sound that can be repeated consistently and is always followed by some form of positive reinforcer (food, stimulation, etc.).  Consistency is important, if you make a different sound every time the bird does something right they will struggle to understand what marks the correct behaviour.  A bridging device must sound at the exact moment the bird did the correct behaviour, this helps the bird pinpoint exactly what they did correctly and increases the odds of them repeating that behaviour.  If you’re making a different sound every time they will not know what your bridging device is and won’t think they’ve done something right until they’ve got the treat in their mouths, this can mean that them standing around or reaching for the treat (whatever they were doing when being rewarded) is the behaviour they will believe they did correctly and is the behaviour they will repeat.

Rewards and Jackpots

 This is by far one of the most helpful things when training a bird, if a bird doesn’t like what they’re being given they won’t work for it, if they have the same thing every day they’ll get bored of it, a key to a good reward is variety in substance and quantity.

Establish what your bird loves best, many birds change their favourite foods around frequently so it’s important to note when they start to lose motivation for the reward you are using and change it up. Good food reinforcers include hulled sunflower seeds, millet, banana chips, oat groats, anything that can be consumed rapidly so they don’t forget what they just did to earn the food, a good stimulative reinforcer may be a favourite toy, sounds, or physical touch.

Simple enough, but what’s a jackpot?  A jackpot is something you reward the bird with when they’ve made a larger step in the right direction, anything that’s better than what you’re already feeding them (this can mean more of the same treat or just a better treat in general).  A jackpot helps the bird understand that what they just did was better than what they were doing before and increases the odds of them repeating that behaviour to earn the jackpot again.  An example of this would be: If I’m teaching a bird to step up and they’re just leaning over my hand, all I’m rewarding with is millet then suddenly they put a foot on my hand I’m going to reward with something better, like sunflower seeds, the bird will want more of those sunflower seeds and start to put their foot on my hand more frequently to earn them.

Session Length, Session Frequency and Ending the Session

 Birds all have different attention spans, it’s important to watch their body language for signs of boredom and lack of interest.  If you push a bird past their reasonable limit they will lose interest in training all together and may learn to hate training!  The average training session should not go any longer than 15 minutes, when just starting out many birds will only be motivated long enough to work for 5 minutes.

The more sessions you have the faster the bird will understand this concept, this is true but there’s also a risk of overdoing it and stretching the bird’s attention span too far causing them to regress.  According to the various CPBT-KA’s (certified professional bird trainers, knowledge assessed) the best number of sessions to have for one concept in one day is 2, one in the morning and one in the evening.  Some birds are equipped to handle three sessions, some can only handle one, you have to evaluate your bird and determine what works best for them.

How you end the session is important, you always have to end on a positive note so the bird looks forwards to coming back the next day.  If you end with the bird tired, overworked, frustrated and confused, they won’t want to work with you and will refuse any attempts by you to get them to participate.  Have the bird enjoy the session and end it as soon as you see them getting bored.

Positive and Negative Reinforcement

 The two most common methods that work best with birds are positive reinforcement and negative punishment (not to be mistaken with negative reinforcement and positive punishment ).  Positive reinforcement is the action of encouraging repetition of a behaviour through some form of reward, negative punishment is discouraging the repetition of a behaviour by removing something positive from the environment.  

An example of positive reinforcement: The bird lifts it’s foot on to my hand, I reward it with food, the bird wants to earn more of that food so it will look to repeat the behaviour of putting it’s foot on my hand

An example of negative punishment: The bird starts to nibble at my hands instead of stepping up, I slowly move my hands away and pause, removing the opportunity to earn the desired reward.  The bird doesn’t want the opportunity to earn a reward taken away, the bird will reduce repetition of nibbling on my hands in order to continue earning treats.

Negative punishment is not the same as positive punishment, we are not harming the bird in any way or initiating a negative response from them.  Positive punishment has been linked to numerous behaviour problems including feather destruction, screaming and aggression. Birds can not correlate an action with positive punishment and understand that their action caused the punishment, positive punishment causes regression and emotional harm to the bird. Do not use positive punishment on a bird.

Progression

 How quickly you pace sessions is determined by the bird,  when teaching a concept you have to break it down in to steps so it is easily understood.  These small steps are extremely significant, birds who learn behaviours by jumping right to the end behaviours commonly forget what they learn and the entire concept must be relearned from scratch.  When taught through a variety of smaller steps a bird may forget different steps and only have to be retaught a few of those last steps to accomplish the end behaviour, the constant repetition displayed through smaller steps also solidifies the concept in their brain and makes it harder to forget.

How many steps you need is dependant on your bird, if you make too many steps and the bird is jumping ahead of you the bird may become frustrated and confused, it’s your job to keep up with the bird’s pace.  If you have too little steps and the bird is stuck it’s your job to break it down in to smaller steps so the bird can accomplish the end goal.

It’s long, I know, but incorporating all of the things listed above can drastically improve not only the bird’s ability to learn and responsiveness but also the bond and communications you are able to have with your parrot.  It might seem like a lot at first but it’s really worth it to see just how excited they can be to work with you, training has become my girls’ favourite part of the day and it’s obvious to me just how much more they enjoy my interaction after working to connect, communicate and bond with them through training.

Animals (and CGI) are EXPENSIVE. A movie won't happen because no one would ever want to shell out the money for that questionable a success. Nah, if it ever gets touched again, it will be something much lower risk. I'm half-expecting a comic series, whey could do so much with that.

Yeah, I’ve been known to joke that That Fucking Hawk (aka the questionably-talented actor who played Tobias and presumably shat on Brooke Nevin an untold number of times) was personally responsible for driving the show off the air, because I have no idea how much of their minuscule budget AniTV blew on that stupid bird but it was probably a huge proportion.  Honestly, I’ll never know why the show actually delayed restoring Tobias’s morphing power for so long compared to when the series did it, given that they did save themselves a lot of money (and a lot of narm) by having Visser Three and Ax pretty much always walk around in human morph, and could have done the same with Tobias as well.  

Honestly I’d love to see an animated adaptation of Animorphs (I’m thinking something like Avatar meets Attack on Titan but with transformation sequences straight out of Akira) if I had my druthers, because that would eliminate the budget issues while also cutting down on the likelihood of whitewashing.  There are also a lot of concepts that a live-action show would necessarily struggle HARD to be able to convey (I still cringe thinking about how AniTV shot Jake’s conversations with Temrash 114 while he was a controller) whereas there are lots of Anime and cartoons that successfully convey multiple characters inhabiting one body through various unreal animation schemes that get the point across.  Anime also have a good history with conveying huge discrepancies between appearance and character (I’m thinking of how sweet and adorable Alphonse Elric always seems despite the animators only ever drawing a huge suit of armor), whereas live action adaptations continuously struggle to convey that pretty people can be evil and ugly people can be good (*cough* fans are still trying to redeem Loki post-genocide *cough*).  

Phalloplasty - Stage 2 Pre-op Appointment

We’re less than 24 hours away from my second (and hopefully final) stage of phalloplasty! It’s unreal to think that this might be my final surgery. It’s been a long 5 years leading to this point and it’s especially tiring to think about the fact that this is my 3rd major surgery in less than a year. But here I am… so close to the finish line and so ready to be there. During this operation Dr. Chen will place my testicular implants, my erectile device (I opted for the semi-rigid rather than the inflatable), and perform a mons resection to lift my phallus to a slightly higher position.

Yes, you making profit through the labor of another person is still a form of theft. The person you hire would need to generate more through their labor than you end up paying them, and the difference between those two things would be your accrued profit. Everything you described at the beginning of your ask is a needless complication created by the capitalist economic system – capitalism demands that you invest, compete, reinvest, compete, and so on, and a person from a lower income bracket risking their money in a scenario like that can be rough. But that doesn’t mean, when you hire someone, that you profiting off of someone else’s labor isn’t theft like all other examples of capitalist exploitation. You might have much more difficulty than a big business capitalist, and the exploitation might not be as extreme, but the labor/surplus appropriation/profit process is still the same. 

I understand your points, and I’m glad you can at least empathize with the central point of capitalist wage theft. But here’s my question to you, Anon:

You recognize that bosses accumulate wealth off the backs of their workers, and you also seem to recognize that capitalism essentially forces you to exploit another person’s labor if you want your small business to stay viable. If you want your business to grow and be more secure, you’ll likely have to exploit more and more workers over time. With that in mind, why support capitalism at all? It’s a system that reproduces and rewards the exploitation of labor, essentially requiring that all bosses dominate workers in some capacity just to stay in business. It’s a vicious cycle and you seem to understand it.

The system is toxic and we need to build the socialist alternative. You mentioned you enjoy creating things for other people, Anon – what if I told you that socialism was about settling the necessities of society through democratic control of utilities, distributing according to social needs and individual interests, building up to a scenario where individuals can then put their creative labor to use however they see fit after those material faculties are covered? We’re fast approaching a point where technology could weed out human labor en masse, so why not take control of the automation and divvy up the otherwise necessary work among communities, in turn cutting down the work week and freeing up our time for things we enjoy doing? You get rid of that poisonous “invest, exploit, compete, reinvest, exploit, compete” cycle and you remove enjoyable labor from that cycle, thus simplifying it. You would be able to put your creativity to use for other people all you want, free from the realm of economic necessity and labor exploitation. 

A more fleshed-out picture of this socialist alternative will start to take shape as more people jump on board to that initial vision. We need people actively building this alternative in their communities and declaring it in political manifestos. I have an undying faith in the human condition, leading me to know that we’d be able to pull this vision off once people understand the basic premise. Question a system that demands that you exploit other people’s labor in order to stay in business, Anon – maybe, just maybe, that system is detrimental to the human condition.

Delirious dragged the two pieces of pasta off the fork with his teeth, sitting back and chewing as Evan stabbed a few more and waited. He watched as the mental patient took his time in eating. He always did, and Evan had long since stopped urging him to go any faster. He’d had to give up his previous patients to take up Delirious full-time.

It meant visiting for check-ups three times a day plus taking time to take him anywhere else, such as monthly doctor checks or fortnightly bathroom runs, and whenever he deemed necessary he could take the patient to the arts room where he would sit and draw and paint for hours. He loved the art room. Evan did too.

Directing another forkful to the red painted lips, Delirious swallowed and took another bite. Music played lightly from Evan’s phone, taking up the silence and blocking out any white noise that would bring the voices back to Jon’s mind. He still scuffed his feet.

I know this isn't NECESSARILY a fat-related question, but more so a "I don't trust mainstream health politics" question, but: what do you know about the correlations between cholesterol levels and heart attack / heart health? I've heard some things that recently people are more skeptical of the direct relationship, and also that those with genetically high cholesterol are not able to lower it with any diet changes. Thoughts / a direction to look for answers?

It is well established that fatness is correlated with higher blood lipid levels (cholesterol/triglycerides), and that blood lipid levels is in turn correlated with cardiovascular disease. Based on this correlation, dietary changes and “maintaining a healthy weight” are often recommended to lower the risk of heart disease. 

But what does the science tell us?

One meta-analysis concluded that “Increasing soluble fiber can make only a small contribution to dietary therapy to lower cholesterol”. 

Another meta-analysis found that: “compliance with current dietary recommendations (30% of energy from fat, < 10% from saturated fat, and < 300 mg cholesterol/d) will reduce plasma total and low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol concentrations by approximately 5% compared with amounts associated with the average American diet.” 

Exercise also appears to lower cholesterol by a similarly small margin. 

Regarding the potential benefits of weight loss, a recent meta-analysis of weight-loss experiments that included long-term follow-up of participants found that diet/exercise/weight loss did not lower blood lipid levels in any meaningful way (i.e., less than 0.25 mmol/L change), these small observed changes were not correlated with weight loss, and weight-loss did not predict a decreased incidence of cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore: “A meta-analysis of prospective epidemiologic studies showed that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD or CVD.”

Based on these results, it seems like changes in diet, exercise, and weight-loss have negligible effects on blood lipid levels, and similar (non) effects on incidence of cardiovascular disease. I’m not sure what to make of these results, but as with all things fat and health related, it seems that the literature poses more questions than answers.

Why I eat a banana everyday!

Bananas are great sources of many nutrients. Bananas:

-Have ~350mg of potassium per serving, which helps to regulate the cardiovascular system
-Contain trace amounts of fat. The fat they do have belongs to the sterol family, which helps to control blood cholesterol
-Packs 3g of fiber. Soluble fiber helps to clean the digestive track, regulate carbohydrate conversion, and may lower the risk of heart disease
-Has the amino acid tryptophan, which the body uses to create serotonin. This chemical promotes a good mood
-Are low in terms of glycemic index
-Gives your body a quick burst of energy without feeling a comedown
-Contains ~43% of your daily needed B6. This water-soluble vitamin must be replenished daily, and is responsible for enabling antibody and red blood cell production, as well as regulating blood sugar levels

My favorite ways to eat a banana are plain, cut up in oatmeal, or frozen as part of a smoothie!

There's a service dogblr who says that spaying and neutering are more invasive and worse for a dog than cropping and docking. But you said they're not comparable. Can you elaborate?

If you mean the post by a 18 year old kid who has falsely been told that speying and neutering removed the genitals of dogs then I can certainly elaborate. I am a practicing veterinarian who decided long ago she wasn’t going to perform procedures that were ethically questionable, so I think I have a decent background knowledge with these things.

First, let me talk about desexing dogs, only briefly from a pain perspective.

Speying - for female dogs, a small incision is made through the flesh of the abdomen, ideally through a band of fibrous tissue called the linea alba. The ovaries (gonads) and uterus are removed. The dog retains her vagina and all external genitals. This is the equivalent of an ovariohysterectomy in humans and only soft tissue need to heal.

Neutering/castration- for male dogs, a small incision (sometimes only keyhole) is made between the penis and the scrotum to remove both testicles only. The dog retains its penis, prepuce, scrotum and all the internal bits. Only soft tissue needs to heal.

Soft tissue damage is considered to be lower on the pain scale than bone or other tissues.

Tail docking - amputation of the tail involves soft tissue damage, plus disarticulating bone, severing tendons and cutting the end of the spinal cord. This often results is abnormal sensation, increases sensitivity at the amputation site and painful neuromas. The frequency at which neuromas develop would be reason alone to ban cosmetic tail docking of dogs. 

Ear cropping - Surgically amputating up to 2/3 of a dog’s ear flaps, consisting of skin and cartilage. Ears are then generally bandages up to ‘train’ the ears into the desired shape, which the puppy may have to endure for several weeks.
The pain is at least as much as desexing. It is not like poking a tiny hole in an ear for an earring stud.

So from that information you might conclude that tail docking is the most painful, both short and long term. Desexing and ear cropping may induce similar levels of surgical pain, though ear cropping requires more discomfort while training the ear.

So why do we do any of this in the first place?

Well Anonymous, certain breed enthusiasts spend their time fear mongering about trauma, specifically ripped off tails and ears. Let me tell you that in all my years in practice, including with farm dogs, bush dogs, two police dogs and a suburban emergency clinic the ONLY times I have ever seen a ear or tail “ripped off” or damaged badly enough for amputation was either the result of a dog fight or a car accident. I practice in Australia where ear cropping and tail docking are not legal, so you would think if this was a real problem my colleagues and I would be seeing it.

Numerous reviews of these practices have resulted in many countries banning them for cosmetic purposes, and many more veterinary bodies urging for them to be banned in their country.

The only reason the practice continues at all is that breed enthusiasts in those countries like the ‘look’ that results from these procedures. There are zero medical benefits and some surgical/post-op pain. In a cost-benefit analysis, there is no reason for the dog to have this done. This is why veterinary organizations condemn these procedures. This is why I don’t do them.

The only reason cosmetic ear cropping and tail docking are done is because the human that owns the dog believes their desire to have an aesthetically pleasing dog is more important than the dog’s pain at and after surgery.

Moving on to speying and neutering (desexing), there’s no denying they cause some surgical/post-surgical pain, but we perform these procedures to benefit the animal and that is why I almost always recommend desexing at some point in a dog or cat’s life.

Pets that are desexed, on average, liver longer. They are less likely to roam and face those associated dangers. Females have almost zero risk of ovarian and uterine cancer, and speying is the best method to prevent pyometra (which is basically lethal without an emergency spey, and that is not the relatively minor procedure a routine spey is by any stretch of the imagination). Females are also at less risk of mammary cancer, and the sooner they are speyed the lower their risk. Males that are castrated eliminate the risk of testicular cancer and lower the risk of perianal adenocarcinoma.

There was a study to suggest that some cancers were more common in desexed golden retrievers. Though the study was good, the results weren’t replicated in Labradors, so you can’t extrapolate 100% to other breeds. Also, the tumors ‘prevented’ by keeping those dogs entire were already relatively uncommon, compared to something like mammary cancer which will affect 1 in 20 of female entire dogs.

There may be something to be said for delaying desexing in large breed dogs, but that also needs to be weighed against the potential benefits of PennHip radiographs and hip dysplasia risks. The time of desexing should be planned on an individual basis to manage all the potential risks and benefits.

Some owners don’t wish to desex their pets. That’s fine, so long as they’re aware of the risks and capable of managing them.

Speaking of evaluating things individually, ear cropping, tail docking and desexing should also be assessed individually. Just because a procedure like declawing or tail docking is worse than ear cropping, it doesn’t make it okay when it still provides zero benefit to the dog.
