About half of all U.S. deaths from heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes are linked to poor diets, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

And eating more — or less — of just 10 types of food can help raise or lower the risk of death from these causes.

Scientists at Tufts University identified the foods that seem to contribute the most to the risk. At the top of the list? Salt. Next, the high intake of red meat and processed meats such as bacon was linked to 8 percent of the deaths. And sugary drinks were a factor in 7.4 percent of the deaths.

Why I eat a banana everyday!

Bananas are great sources of many nutrients. Bananas:

-Have ~350mg of potassium per serving, which helps to regulate the cardiovascular system
-Contain trace amounts of fat. The fat they do have belongs to the sterol family, which helps to control blood cholesterol
-Packs 3g of fiber. Soluble fiber helps to clean the digestive track, regulate carbohydrate conversion, and may lower the risk of heart disease
-Has the amino acid tryptophan, which the body uses to create serotonin. This chemical promotes a good mood
-Are low in terms of glycemic index
-Gives your body a quick burst of energy without feeling a comedown
-Contains ~43% of your daily needed B6. This water-soluble vitamin must be replenished daily, and is responsible for enabling antibody and red blood cell production, as well as regulating blood sugar levels

My favorite ways to eat a banana are plain, cut up in oatmeal, or frozen as part of a smoothie!

is it possible we could stop tagging posted nsfw art in the main #steven universe tag and just keep it within the respective gemshipping (or other adult ships) tags?? kids won’t be searching for ship names, and omitting the su tag from your post gives it a much lower risk of showing up through google

i know there’s already a project to help clean up su-related search results, and i think that’s wonderful!! i just feel like this extra precaution could help out everyone a bit more

New Study Recommends 10 Servings of Fruit and Veggies

How many servings of fruit and vegetables do you consume in a typical day?

Eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruit is a great way to promote better health and wellness. Fresh produce offers a plethora of beneficial nutrients and vitamins; thus, lowering the risk of disease and illness. But many people fall short of consuming the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables in their daily diet.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults should consume five servings of fruit and vegetables per day. While that may seem excessive, there’s actually new evidence suggesting that we should consume even more produce in our diets.

According to a recent study conducted by researchers from the Imperial College London, consuming roughly 800 grams of fruits and vegetables offers the greatest protection from many common diseases, as well as early death. More specifically, researchers found that people who consume 800 grams of vegetables and fruit had a 24% lower risk of developing heart disease; a 33% lower risk of stroke; a 13% lower risk of cancer (all types); and a 31% lower risk of premature death from all causes.

To make these conclusions, researchers analyzed 95 existing health studies involving some 2 million people throughout the world. Researchers say that increasing the recommendations for vegetables and fruit could save 7.8 million lives each year.

Among the most beneficial vegetables were leafy greens and cruciferous, while apples, pears and oranges were the most beneficial fruits.

The study’s lead author and researcher, however, stresses that more research is needed to determine the effects of specific types of fruit and vegetables

We need further research into the effects of specific types of fruits and vegetables and preparation methods of fruit and vegetables,” said lead author and researcher Dr. Dagfinn Aune. “We also need more research on the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake with causes of death other than cancer and cardiovascular disease.”

Being that only 1 in 3 people currently consume the five servings of vegetables and fruit daily, it’s difficult to achieve this through dieting. However, there are ways to increase your intake of produce. Investing in a juicer or blender, for instance, will allow you create delicious beverages with fresh vegetables and/or fruit. Substituting chips or french fries for produce can also prove helpful.

This study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Diabetes is caused from consuming too much fat. Although there still could be a chance you develop it (type 1 or 2 i forget which one). But check out “mindfuldiabetic” on instagram and youtube. Robby has diabetes, yet eats an entirely plant based diet (lots of fruit too!)

Whoa I didn't know anti anxiety meds can be that devastating on the body, what exactly happens?

Only in ridiculously high doses, which some cases of extreme anxiety or reactivity might need. Typically they will begin to cause liver, kidney, or heart failure as the dosage continually increases. The typical dose that most dogs need to maintain an emotionally healthier mindset is much lower and thus much lower risk.

If you think about it, various drugs for human mental conditions also have a warning about extremely high doses being not good for your body and most doctors want to start you off on a low dose and see what the lowest they can do will do for you so that your body and brain don’t decide you’re ingesting poison. When I was on anti seizure drugs when I had epilepsy, there was a lot of doublechecking to make sure my organs were functioning properly. Even my heart meds, which are to prevent me having a heart attack, may cause heart failure if I overdose on them.

It reminds me of something I heard while playing an AC game- you call it medicine when it heals and poison when it kills, but the only difference is how much you’ve taken.

I'll never see where he's from, I'll never get to visit his hometown. because I'm trans. and that's illegal. ofc being a trans man I'm at a lower risk of police violence (I'm protected under laws against harassment/abuse of women) but it's sad. and it's scary. and it's only worse for trans women there.

Honestly it’s so like terfs to just completely ignore the existence of transphobia and pretty like we’re all perfect safe and have it so easy. Also I’m so sorry you’re in that position and I hope things somehow get better.

Male privilege resembles the global epidemic of 100 million missing women due to sex-selective abortions. Male privilege is the lower risk of divorce and higher paternal involvement during pregnancy and the first 5 years of age when it's a boy. Trans women are women, but they do receive some male privilege before transitioning that they never lose. They're still valid.

I have never heard of someone eating differently during a pregnancy because they believe their fetus will be assigned male at birth but idk a whole lot about pregnancy. Ur wording of sex selective abortions is also weird to me, also I feel weird about referring to not being aborted as a privilege even tho I know sex selective abortions are rooted in misogyny but that’s rly neither here nor there.

I am cis and I have no business making any kind of argument here. Plenty of trans women have spoken about this, there’s no reason not to listen to them. I can’t link anything bc I’m on mobile but basically I’m not the person to make this argument with, it’s not my arguement to have because I don’t have the experiences we’re talking about.

And if we want to not misgender people (that’s what I want at least) “pregnant people” is really better, not every pregnant person is a woman and so they definitely aren’t all “mothers.” Just btw

Lunch at Limone sul Garda, a town in the province of Brescia in Lombardia, Northern Italy, on the shore of Lake Garda. Despite the presence of famous cultivations of lemons, the town’s name is probably derived from the ancient “lemos” (elm) or “limes” (Latin: boundary, referring to the communes of Brescia and the Bishopric of Trento). Until the 1940′s the city was reachable only by lake or through the mountains; the road to Riva del Garda was only built in 1932. Today, Limone is one of the most popular tourist resorts in the area. 

In 1979, researchers discovered that people in Limone possess a mutant form of apolipoprotein (’ApoA-1 Milano’) in their blood that induced a healthy form of high-density cholesterol, which resulted in a lowered risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. The protein appears to have given residents of the village extreme longevity - a dozen of those living here are over the age of 100 (for c. 1000 total inhabitants). The origin of the mutation has been traced back to a couple who lived in Limone in the 17th century. Research has been ongoing to develop pharmaceutical treatments against heart disease based on mimicking the beneficial effects of the mutation.

Losing your sense of of smell? You could be dying!

New research has linked the sense of smell with one’s death. This finding is said to be different from other health variables such as age, gender and chronic mental disorders like dementia.

This study was carried out by researchers from the University of Stockholm, Sweden with Dr Jonas Olofsson as the lead researcher. They analysed 1,774 people belonging to the age group 40 to 90, over a decade.

“After controlling for demographic, health-related, and cognitive confounders, each additional correctly identified odor lowered the risk of mortality by 8 percent. Individuals who performed at chance level on tests (indicating complete olfactory loss) were at a 19 percent higher risk of death than individuals with normal smell function,” said the statement.

Around 23 percent of those who took part in the study, ie, 411 out of 1774 died during the experiment. Those participants who could identify odours correctly were said to be at an 8 percent lower mortality risk.

Hence, olfactory loss was considered as a signal of increased death risk in middle-aged and elderly people.

The researchers concluded that the results of this experiment point towards the fact that assessing the olfactory system may shed light on the ageing brain.

“Our results were not explained by dementia, which was previously linked to smell loss. Instead, mortality risk was uniquely predicted by smell loss,” said Dr Olofsson.

“In our future research, we will try to pinpoint the biological processes that can explain this phenomenon,” he added.

As the days bled into weeks and the weeks poured into months, you found yourself slowly on the mend.  Working around Spencer became easier and easier, because at least he was decent enough to not talk about his explorations while you were around.

It also helped that Derek always slid in to be your partner in the field, lowering the risk of being paired with Reid by an unassuming Hotch.

Derek eventually suggested you take physical time off from the team after struggling for a few weeks at work, citing that a few weeks completely away from him might solidify the process your heart and mind were attempting to instate.

Hotch had approved, but only because you hadn’t taken vacation since first joining the team.

Though that didn’t keep your boss from darting his eyes between Spencer and Derek whenever he thought no one was looking.

You knew enough to know he wasn’t sure what was going on, but you also understood that he knew something had happened.

The three weeks of vacation were very much needed.  You made the decision, after two days of crying within the confines of your bedspread, that you were going to treat yourself to a spa day.  So, you rolled out of bed, went for a massage, a facial, a mani-pedi combination, and gotten your hair cut for the first time in 5 years.

You felt refreshed.  Treasured.

Beautiful…

And that’s when you realized that you needed to start treating yourself to things you were relying on others to do for you.

So one evening, on a whim, you dressed yourself up and took yourself out to one of the nice restaurants in the area, ordering a luscious dinner along with a couple of glasses of fine wine, and a wonderful dessert to-go.

After all, you had been listening to Rossi’s suggestions, even if they were technically for your best friend’s dates.

Derek checked up on you frequently, as per usual.  He commented on your nice hair-cut and how you were beginning to look a bit better, how you looked more rested and were smiling broader than he had seen in a while…and you found yourself incredibly thankful for his company.

After all, he was your best friend, and you missed seeing him everyday.

The days where you did stay in and grieve, it helped to point out Spencer’s flaws in your head.

Like how he wasn’t big on looks, so complimenting women on them wasn’t something he normally did.

Or how he could get so engrossed in a case that sometimes people had to remind him to shower or eat.

Or how messy people said his apartment had a tendency to be (you wouldn’t know, since you had never been invited over) and how disorganized messes drove you absolutely insane.

Underwear does not belong in the living room!

“Or how he can’t get a sentence out when he’s flustered!” you laugh as you shove Chinese food into your mouth, “I mean, getting flustered every once in a while is cute, but with it happening all the time, it’s a wonder someone he likes can even converse with him!  Poor guy.”

As Derek watches the crease at the corner of your eyes as your laughter fills your living room, he continues to pick at his lo mein noodles, his eyes dancing along your figure as he takes in the fullness of your cheeks and the thickness of your thighs.

“Oh, and his not ever wanting to go out.  I mean, I’m the definition of a homebody, but sometimes I just wanna have a drink and watch people sing terrible karaoke, ya know?”

But Derek’s eyes were locked onto your hair.

Watching as his hand slowly begins to extend, you watch with your eyes as your head holds still, his fingertips reaching out to finger a lock of hair hanging at the side of your face, the heat from his palm radiating towards your cheek as you find yourself holding your breath.

“This haircut really does look good on you, Y/N,” he says, a light smile gracing his cheeks.

“Thanks.  I was really overdue for one,” you snicker playfully, your eyes watching his face intently as his stare slowly wanders over your curves.

“Derek?” you ask, slightly breathless.

“Yeah?” he responds, his eyes whipping up to yours.

“You, uh…you alright?” you ask.

You were thoroughly confused at your own reaction.

It was as if your mind was attempting to keep a secret from you that your body was already let in on.

“Yeah.  Yeah, I just…it’s really good to see you treating yourself a bit better.  You know, giving yourself some credit for being the incredible woman that I know you are.”

You felt a smirk creep across your lips.

“Yeah, well…Spencer ain’t gonna do it for me,” you remark, bringing another forkful of chicken to your mouth as Derek’s hand drops back into his lap.

“You never know, it doesn’t have to be Spencer,” he says as he slowly wraps some noodles around his fork.

“Eh.  I mean, yeah I wanted to date Spencer, but now I just…eh…I don’t know.”

“Y/N,” Derek says as he sets his food to the side, “don’t let your crush with Spencer somehow deter you from finding someone,” he says, scooting himself closer to you on the couch.

“Oh, no no.  Nothing like that,” you say, shaking your head as you set your half-eaten platter to the side, “I just…need to try and treat myself the way I thought I needed someone else to.  And it’s going really well.”

“Good,” he says as he puts his hand on your knee and squeezes, “that’s really good.”

The silence was pregnant with his unspoken words.

“Derek?” you ask, leaning your torso in lightly as you catch his eyes, “You’re not finished.”

The stare that caught your eye was filled with a ferocious intensity that you had yet to see in Derek.

Which is saying something, considering the bond the two of you shared since the day you walked into the BAU.

“I just…don’t want you to give up,” he says as his hand makes its way over to yours, “you never know.  One day you might wake up, and the person you’re supposed to be alongside is the last one you ever imagined yourself with.”

Feeling his fingers slowly wrap around the top of your hand, your eyes flutter down briefly, taking in his touch before slowly panning your eyes back up to him.

“Wise words from the player,” you smirk, your eyebrow cocking playfully in the air as Derek continues to hold your gaze.

“Sometimes a game is played by someone because they know they can win,” Derek shoots back.

Blinking as you digest his words, you find your mind carefully formulating your response.

You just didn’t know why.

“Wouldn’t the game be boring if you know how it’s going to end?” you ask, feeling yourself lean slightly closer, hanging onto the silence in the air as you pause, waiting impatiently for his answer.

“Playing a game is never about the winning, it’s about the confidence that comes after you realize you’ve won,” he admits.

You watched something flash behind his eyes.  Just for a second, when his eyebrows relented and the corners of his eyes twitched.

“Maybe you could gain the same kind of confidence by playing a different game,” you muse, your face softening as your eyes dance along Derek’s face.

“Or maybe I just need a permanent partner to play the game with,” he muses lowly, his voice rattling your rib-cage as your tongue darts out to lick your lips.

“Derek Morgan…a permanent partner…” you trail off.

You were just now becoming aware of how close the two of you had become.

Clearing your throat as you sit back, you tuck the loose strand of hair behind your ear quickly as you swallow hard, taking in a couple of long, deep breaths before reaching out to grab your food off of the coffee table beside you.

“She’ll be a lucky woman,” you smile, winking playfully at your best friend as he forces a smile upon his face, not bothering to grab his food off of the table as he sinks slowly back into the pillows of your couch.

“Nah,” he playfully shrugs off, “but I’d be lucky to have you,” he says.

Wait…what?

Furrowing your brow as you pause mid-bite, the fork halfway to your mouth as your eyes widen, you quickly dart your gaze up to Derek as he cocks his head lightly.

“What?” he asks.

“Me?” you breathe.

“Huh?” he asks, thorough confusion wafting over his face as you watch his breathing ever-so-slightly pick up.

“You said, ‘But I’d be lucky to have you’,” you state.

“No, I didn’t.”

“Yes, Derek.  You did.”

You flinch as the chicken falls off of your fork and back into the container at your chest.

As you slowly set the tray in your lap, your brow furrowing deep as you watch your best friend squirm uncomfortably at the end of your couch, you replay the conversation quickly in your mind as his voice rings in your head.

Or maybe I just need a permanent partner.

The last one you ever imagined yourself with.

It doesn’t have to be Spencer…

When you finally snap back to reality, it was because of your front door being closed hastily, the ricocheting thud springing you to your feet as you dash for the door, whipping it open only to see Derek climbing quickly into his car.

“Derek!” you call out, jumping off of your porch as you watch him quickly back out of your driveway.

“Morgan!” you shriek, cupping your hands around your mouth as you watch his car zoom down the street, your body standing in the middle of your lawn as your mind begins to whirl with the truth that has started to unfold.

Feeling a vibration in your pocket, you fumble with your phone, dropping it to the ground as you curse to yourself before bending over to pick it up.

1 Missed Message.

Swiping your phone open, your eyes flitter along the text message, the unknown tears brewing behind your eyes dripping onto the screen as the simple words dance along your phone.

“I’m sorry, Y/N.”

Feeling the emotion bubble inside you, the anger from Spencer’s denial and the frustration from your blindness and the fury from your shock, you peel your mouth open as your throat emits a sound-wave that could easily be misconstrued as alien.

“Daaaaaaaamn IT!”
