After nearly nine years in prison,
O.J. Simpson will soon be a free man. Again. A four-member parole board in Carson City, Nev., voted unanimously to curtail his 33-year prison sentence for kidnapping and armed robbery, stemming from a confrontation over sports memorabilia in Las Vegas in 2007.

Simpson rose to prominence for his athletic talent and record-breaking football career. He became the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season. After the 1979 season, he retired from football and was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, beginning careers in acting and football broadcasting.

In 1994, Simpson became embroiled in controversy and media scrutiny after he was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman. The two were found stabbed to death in Los Angeles near Brown’s condominium. Police treated Simpson as a person of interest, and after failing to turn himself in, began a low-speed pursuit of him along Interstate 405 in California, while he was riding in the backseat of a white Ford Bronco SUV.

Simpson was acquitted of charges in a lengthy and widely publicized trial that culminated on Oct. 3, 1995, in a jury verdict of “not guilty.” Millions of people tuned in to watch or listen to the announcement. The crime remains unsolved, but many saw his nine-year service in prison as a place he should have been since his murder trial.

He faced other legal troubles throughout the early 2000s that included arrests, FBI searches and lawsuits. Attention returned to the Hall of Fame running back and former actor for his 2007 ill-fated bid to retrieve sports memorabilia and again, ten years later, when he became eligible for parole. This Sept. 9, 2008, file photo shows O.J. Simpson arriving at the Clark County Regional Justice Center on the second day of jury selection for his trial in Las Vegas. Nevada parole board officials cited good behavior in prison as factors for his upcoming, early release on Oct. 1.
Bucky knew they were coming long before they arrived. He’d set up a few contingencies to alert him to pursuit–mostly low tech, but effective. He was out of the room he’d been sleeping in and on the roof long before his enemies were approaching the building.
It was about fourteen–no, fifteen. there was a woman who’d been hidden by the sheer fucking bulk of the guys they’d sent after him. Hydra, not soldiers or police.
Enough to be a pain in the ass, but they helpfully split forces at the front of the building, with seven going inside and the remaining eight coming around the back.
Jumping down to the fire escape, Bucky swung off the rail and took the first man out with his landing, kicking him in the head to make sure he stayed down.
They hadn’t expected him. Shock. Fear.
Bucky felt a surge of guilt as he recognized the emotion he was feeling as he tore through his opponents, metal arm crushing the face of one, throwing another into the wall of the building so hard that the crack of his head against the bricks was audible, even above the yells of orders and dismay.
He was glad they were afraid. Really glad. He wanted them to be.
Even as a primal joy of combat and revenge warred with that guilt, he was aware of everyone on this small battlefield, and the presence of the others who would soon come to the aid of these. One was missing. He could not longer see the woman who’d been part of this group.
That set of an inner alarm and the speed of his fighting increased. Reaching out, he grabbed the nearest man with both hands, snapping his neck. That left three and the missing woman, plus the seven inside.
He spun, flipping sideways as he did to avoid gunfire, then threw one of the wounded at the three who stood grouped as though proximity to each other gave them some kind of safety.
One dropped his Glock and Bucky picked it up, shooting all three. He’d hoped to avoid gunfire, but once they’d started, there was no need to maintain silence.
He collected the other guns quickly, then moved so that his back was to the wall, and started looking for the woman. She hadn’t run, so she must be using some kind of stealth device, waiting for a chance to strike.
Why hadn’t she fired already? Maybe she was waiting until he started to leave, so she could hit him from behind without him finding her.
Well, he had enough bullets to simply shoot until he found her, and a need to deal with her before the others arrived.
Bucky raised a gun and fired a little to his left, fired again a foot to the right of the first shot, and continued, each shot coming quickly off the last. “You’re making me waste bullets and time.”
