Bucky knew they were coming long before they arrived. He’d set up a few contingencies to alert him to pursuit–mostly low tech, but effective. He was out of the room he’d been sleeping in and on the roof long before his enemies were approaching the building.
It was about fourteen–no, fifteen. there was a woman who’d been hidden by the sheer fucking bulk of the guys they’d sent after him. Hydra, not soldiers or police.
Enough to be a pain in the ass, but they helpfully split forces at the front of the building, with seven going inside and the remaining eight coming around the back.
Jumping down to the fire escape, Bucky swung off the rail and took the first man out with his landing, kicking him in the head to make sure he stayed down.
They hadn’t expected him. Shock. Fear.
Bucky felt a surge of guilt as he recognized the emotion he was feeling as he tore through his opponents, metal arm crushing the face of one, throwing another into the wall of the building so hard that the crack of his head against the bricks was audible, even above the yells of orders and dismay.
He was glad they were afraid. Really glad. He wanted them to be.
Even as a primal joy of combat and revenge warred with that guilt, he was aware of everyone on this small battlefield, and the presence of the others who would soon come to the aid of these. One was missing. He could not longer see the woman who’d been part of this group.
That set of an inner alarm and the speed of his fighting increased. Reaching out, he grabbed the nearest man with both hands, snapping his neck. That left three and the missing woman, plus the seven inside.
He spun, flipping sideways as he did to avoid gunfire, then threw one of the wounded at the three who stood grouped as though proximity to each other gave them some kind of safety.
One dropped his Glock and Bucky picked it up, shooting all three. He’d hoped to avoid gunfire, but once they’d started, there was no need to maintain silence.
He collected the other guns quickly, then moved so that his back was to the wall, and started looking for the woman. She hadn’t run, so she must be using some kind of stealth device, waiting for a chance to strike.
Why hadn’t she fired already? Maybe she was waiting until he started to leave, so she could hit him from behind without him finding her.
Well, he had enough bullets to simply shoot until he found her, and a need to deal with her before the others arrived.
Bucky raised a gun and fired a little to his left, fired again a foot to the right of the first shot, and continued, each shot coming quickly off the last. “You’re making me waste bullets and time.”
