Rob Sheffield Rates One Direction Members' Solo Careers So Far
From Harry Styles to Zayn Malik, how each member is faring musically – and how they've addressed the breakup in the press

By Rob Sheffield Aug 3, 2017 10 hours ago

It’s official: All five lads in One Direction have kicked off their solo careers. Ever since 1D went on hiatus in late 2015 – we can only hope it’s temporary – the world has been eager to hear what kind of history they’ll make on their own. Some have dropped full-fledged albums; others are still getting their toes wet. But in the great Beatle tradition, they’re all speaking their minds about the breakup, in the press and in their songs – whether they’re dishing out praise or shade. Here’s a handy guide to the story so far.

Louis Tomlinson

Solo music: Working on his first solo album after releasing one single, “Just Hold On,” a banging duet with electronic DJ Steve Aoki. The most prolific songwriter in 1D – and the most continually surprising – so “Just Hold On” feels like just a taste of what he can do, more a teaser for glories to come than a proper solo debut.

Solo mystique: “Just Hold On” gained emotional resonance from the way he debuted it on The X Factor just a week after the tragic death of his mother from leukemia, making it sound like a heartfelt tribute.

Sounds like: Skrillex plus Diplo plus Calvin Harris times Stevie Wonder plus Howard Jones.

Sample lyric: “What do you do when the chapter ends?/Do you close the book and never read it again?”

Fighting words: “Niall, for example. He’s the most lovely guy in the world. Happy-go-lucky Irish, no sense of arrogance. And he’s fearless. There are times I’ve thought: ‘I’d have a bit of that.’ Zayn has a fantastic voice. Harry comes across very cool. Liam’s all about getting the crowd going, doing a bit of dancing. And then there’s me.”

Equivalent Beatle record: George’s “What Is Life?”

Harry Styles

Solo music: His debut was a Number One hit (obviously) and a deeply personal singer-songwriter statement (which wasn’t obvious at all), steering away from celebrity glitz. “Sign of the Times,” a five-minute piano ballad that’s long and rambling and downright weird, made up in the studio on the spot, nonetheless went Top Ten. He kicks off his first solo tour this fall.

Solo mystique: He’s making his mark as a credible adult rocker without the slightest hint of shade at his pop fans – which is merely the most difficult trick in show biz. He takes the all-smiles Paul McCartney exit ramp while Zayn has gone for John Lennon–style beef. And “Two Ghosts” drops sly hints about Taylor Swift – he even sings about a refrigerator light, an in-joke for Swifties everywhere – showing that he loves to keep everyone guessing.

Sounds like: Mick Jagger plus Harry Nilsson plus Taylor Swift plus Badfinger plus Donovan times Stevie Nicks.

Sample lyric: “You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky.”

Fighting words: “How can you say young girls don’t get it? They’re our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going. Teenage girl fans – they don’t lie. If they like you, they’re there.”

Equivalent Beatle record: Paul’s Band on the Run

Zayn Malik

Solo music: He quit 1D bitterly in 2014, calling them “generic.” His R&B debut Mind of Mine went Number One in 2016, as did his single “Pillowtalk.” The soft-porn video with model Gigi Hadid was his inevitable “hello, I’ve just left a boy band, so let me announce I am in favor of sex-having” statement. If Gigi is his Yoko, this was his Plastic Hadid Band. He also dueted with Taylor Swift on a Fifty Shades of Greysoundtrack theme.

Solo mystique: Talks about how repressed he felt in the group, yet hasn’t quite backed it up with his pleasantly blah solo music. His best solo hit, “BeFoUr,” comes on like a dis of his ex-bandmates, who made the album Four right BeFoUr he quit – and the capitalized letters suggest he’s sending them a Big FU.

Sounds like: early the Weeknd meets late the Weeknd, with a side order of George Michael circa Listen Without Prejudice.

Sample lyric: “I don’t drink to get drunk/I feel all the right funk.”

Fighting words: “That’s not music I would listen to. Would you listen to One Direction, say, at a party with your girl? I wouldn’t. To me, that’s not an insult, that’s me as a 22-year-old man. As much as I was in that band, and I loved everything that we did, that’s not music that I would listen to.”

Equivalent Beatle record: John’s “How Do You Sleep?”

Niall Horan

Solo music: The Irish guitar boy, always a hit with the moms, scored a great solo hit last fall with the understated and beautiful folkie ballad “This Town.” As a nostalgic breakup song, it doubled as a bittersweet farewell to the group. His second solo single, “Slow Hands,” goes for a sultrier, even bluesier vibe, with lyrics about making out.

Solo mystique: He’s unflaggingly loyal to the group – he’s the one who talks about how it’s inevitable they’ll get back together – and he’s stuck to his long-running monogamous relationship with his acoustic guitar.

Sounds like: James Taylor meets Ed Sheeran, with Bonnie Raitt on lead guitar.

Sample lyric: “Slow hands/Like sweat dripping down our laundry.”

Fighting words: “When One Direction come back we’ll still have albums left to do. … It’s been a year and a bit already. We don’t want to put a time on it. But when that phone call does come, no matter whoever it comes from, we’re back again.”

Equivalent Beatle record: Ringo’s “Photograph”

Liam Payne

Solo music: The last to test the solo waters, Liam recently dropped “Strip That Down,” a party-hearty flop with Ed Sheerhan and Migos’ Quavo that missed the Top 40. He can do better – he cowrote some of 1D’s finest tunes – so it’s tough to guess why he even released it. He also just became a dad: Welcome to the world, Bear Payne!

Solo mystique: He gets personal about breaking free from 1D in “Strip That Down.” But it’s bizarre to hear Liam sing about hitting the club to chug rum and grind on groupies – it doesn’t ring true from a guy who just had a baby with one of England’s most famous models, Cheryl Cole. Quavo adds the unfortunate hook “She gonna strip it down for a thug” – there are many words to describe Liam, but “thug” doesn’t make the top ten thousand.

Sounds like: Lil Jon plus Wham! plus Nu Shooz plus Huey Lewis plus the News.

Sample lyric: “I used to be in 1D/Now I’m out free/People want one thing from me/That’s not me.”

Fighting words: “Everyone is now free to do their own thing in music and explore the music. I was worried that people would take it negatively but it’s not meant to be in that sense at all. None of us left the band; we’re on hiatus still, and what a great hiatus it’s been so far.”

Equivalent Beatle record: Paul’s “Spies Like Us.”

Harry Styles Emulates Folk-Rock Heroes at Intimate Los Angeles Gig
Harry Styles was joined onstage by Stevie Nicks Friday night at Los Angeles' Troubadour, a gig that marked the singer's first full U.S. concert.

“Tonight is maybe the best night of my life,” Harry Styles confessed Friday, facing an excited crowd of fans and friends gathered to hear the songs of his just-released solo debut, Harry Styles. The intimate club performance unfolded at the Troubadour, the celebrated West Hollywood room where some of his folk-rock heroes from the Seventies performed early career-defining gigs.

The erstwhile One Direction singer walked out as casually as anyone can in golden glitter pants. He picked up an electric guitar to begin “Ever Since New York,” a ballad warm and jangly, to an audience of raised cell phones. He winced dramatically to the lyrics of bitter love (“Almost over / Had enough from you”), ending with a fan sing-along to the repeated closing line: “Oh, tell me something I don’t already know.”

The album wasn’t the obvious move for the pop idol, but is now fully expected to debut at Number One on the Billboard 200 album chart. The concert at the 500-capacity Troubadour was a night to celebrate (and a benefit for homeless teens), while a crowd of mostly female fans not lucky enough to score a ticket stood outside waiting behind a barricade, maybe hoping for a glimpse of Styles, guest James Corden or anyone else.

At 23, Styles has launched a solo career to genuine acclaim, drawing less on the immediate pop of his multi-platinum boy band than lessons learned from the rock and pop past. His new songs show the direct influence of Bowie, Elton John, the Stones, Lennon & McCartney, and many others. The results that aren’t revolutionary in 2017 but are emotionally resonant, and suggest a healthy foundation of taste and ambition.

At the Troubadour, the percussive piano on “Woman” began like Elton’s “Bennie and the Jets.” The folky glimmer of his “Meet Me in the Hallway” shimmered like Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” His “Only Angel” snarled with Stonesy guitars and fittingly brutal beats and cowbell from drummer Sarah Jones.

By the time Stevie Nicks stepped out as his surprise guest for a trio of duets, Styles had traveled comfortably through a variety of styles. “You look pretty wonderful,” Styles said almost shyly as Nicks arrived at the mic. She replied, “So do you.”

“Nicks wore black and sang harmony on Styles’ "Two Ghosts,” a dreamy tune that could be Beck in sad singer-songwriter mode. Nicks looked over at her singing partner and blended her voice with his: “We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me / Trying to remember how it feels to have a heart beat.”

They followed with Fleetwood Mac’s classic “Landslide,” trading lyrics and admiring glances. Young women in the crowd shouted along to Nicks, but turned silent when Styles delivered his lines, which were his most gentle and reverent of the night. When Nicks paused to share some history about “Landslide,” Styles stepped back to sit and listen like the rest of the room, then joined her on one more song, “Leather and Lace.”

For much of the 80-minute set, Styles’ demeanor was as casual as if he were hosting a cocktail party in his living room, at ease with fans shouting ecstatically to his every syllable. With him were not a band of session players but a group of young musicians and peers, including guitarist Mitch Rowland, who was still working at a pizza shop when recruited by Styles as a player and co-writer on the album.

Together, they charged into “Kiwi,” a grinding rocker in the tradition of the Strokes or Jet, sending Styles bouncing around the stage, leaning into the front rows, punching the air.

“Unfortunately I only have one album, so we’ve only got one song left,” he said with a laugh near the end of the night. “We’ve quite literally run out of material.”

He then turned to the band and suggested performing “Kiwi” once more, as many in the crowd erupted. The band dove back into the rocker, and it was just as convincing, the song and energy clearly a sweet spot for Styles. When it was done, he asked, “Do it again?”

Instead, Styles closed with the emotionally lush “Sign of the Times,” already a career-defining song for the new solo artist. It wasn’t a casual reading. His voice soared and shifted gracefully between tenor and falsetto, retaining the epic song’s solemn gospel flavor (even without the album’s accompanying choir).

Like “Kiwi,” the tune tapped into something real in the singer, lifting him far beyond casual charmer and into passionate performer. Which might the greatest lesson of all from the musical heroes of the rock and pop past.

Masterlist

You nervously twist your wedding band, while you sit in the bathroom, waiting for this little stick to determine your future. “Oh God,” you gasp and cover your mouth. The two little white lines staring back at you tell you everything you need to know. You’re pregnant. You are going to be a mom. And Daveed. Oh God, Daveed. What was he going think? The two of you had always talked about kids, but what if he didn’t actually want kids.

You’re pulled out of your thoughts when Renee knocks on the door. “(Y/N), you’ve been in there for thirty minutes. Are you okay?” You quickly wash your hands and walk out of the bathroom, test in hand. “Help.” You show her the stick, causing her to squeal. “When did you find out?”

“Thirty minutes ago?”

She smiles and hugs you. “Did you tell him?”

“No. I literally just found out.”

“I have an idea!” She exclaims, leading you into the Schuyler Sisters’ dressing room. “Put on Pip’s dress. I’ll try to get Lin on board with this. We still have time to rehearse for this.” She doesn’t give you time to ask any questions before leaving the room to find Lin.

You sigh and change into the blue dress, rather than your yellow one. Not even ten minutes later, she comes back. “We’re switching roles for the show! I told Lin to have the guys trade roles. Daveed is going to be Hamilton.”

You give her a quizzical look. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“You’ll be singing ‘That Would Be Enough’. For your husband,” she explains.

You smile and hug her. “You are a genius.”

~~~
You take a deep breath before ‘Helpless’ starts. Smiling, you twirl around remembering when you met Daveed.
You stare at your laptop, trying to finish your English essay. You look up and take a sip of your coffee.
“Excuse me,” a deep voice starts, “can I sit here?”
You move some of your papers out of the way. “Yeah. I should probably get going anyway.” You close your laptop and grab your binder.
“Do you need some help?” the man asks.
You smile. “I don’t want to bother you.”
“Don’t worry about it. Let me help.”
You take a seat next to him and pull up your essay. “Thank you.”
“Really, it’s no problem. Let me see what you have.”
You watch him read over your work. You watch as his eyes scan over the words, gently biting his lip.
“I’m helpless.”
You smile as Pippa starts singing “Satisfied”, leaning into Daveed’s chest, you’re suddenly flooded with memories of your wedding.
Daveed leads you into the middle of the floor for your first dance. You rest your head on his chest while he guides you. “I love you. I love you so fucking much.”
You smile and kiss his cheek. “Not nearly as much as I love you.”
He shakes his head slightly. “Whatever you say, Mrs. Diggs.”
You chuckle. “God, I love that.”
Once the song ends, you make your way back into the crowd and talk to his family. His mom immediately engulfs you in a hug. “You look beautiful.”
“Thank you. And thank you so much for coming.”
She sighs. “He is incredibly lucky.”
You stand next to her and watch Daveed talk to your parents. “If anything, I’m the lucky one.”
She rubs your back. “You two really seem to love each other.”
“We do. We really do.”
You leave the stage as the opening notes of the next song start playing, giving Renee a hug as soon as you see her. “Thank you!”
She grins. “I’m really enjoying this.”
~~~

You slowly walk over to Daveed.

“How long have you known?”

“Not long ago.” You place his hands on your stomach.

He continues singing, not processing that you changed the lyric.

“But you deserve the chance to meet your son.” Your eyes meet his, and he suddenly seems to understand what you mean, pulling you closer to him.

As soon the song stops, he turns to you. “You’re pregnant?”

You take a deep breath. “Yeah.”

His smile widens, and he kisses your forehead.

~~~
The two of you are inseparable during intermission. After the show, the cast congratulates the two of you. Almost everyone knew what was going on because Lin can’t keep a secret.
Once you get back to your apartment, Daveed kisses you. “We’re going to be parents.”
You smile. “Yeah, yeah we are.”
“You’re going to be the best mom.”
“Only because you’re going to be the best dad.”
And if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones.
‘Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs.
Setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong
And if you’re still bleeding, you’re the lucky ones.
‘Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone.
And if you’re in love, then you are the lucky one,
'Cause most of us are bitter over someone.
DIVIDE REVIEW
Eraser: Eraser is easily one of Ed’s best and most honest raps I think he’s put out there. YNMIDNY and Take It Back have more the undertones of not giving a fuck about what the industry thinks and staying a step ahead while being aware of the darkness to avoid. Eraser shows the side of Ed I feel he had been trying to hide from us. It’s honest about his struggles and alludes to cocaine, which is a terrifying drug (not that he needs to be told).  It seems to be an almost apology for the wrong turns he’s made throughout his career; to us, to his family and friends, and to himself. I think this song is the perfect reminder as to why Ed took his year long break to find himself and his happiness again and for that reason it is a perfect opener for this album. It forever warms my heart endlessly to know Ed trusts us with songs like this that are so brutally honest and full of his deepest emotions. I feel happy that he can open up and get these feelings out, but I hope he never feels like he needs to apologize to us for things like this. This is a reminder that celebrities are real people too, just like you and me. It can’t be easy to live under a microscope all the time. I hope he knows how much we love and appreciate him. We are well aware he is not a perfect person and it is totally acceptable to make these mistakes and lose yourself because everyone does.
Castle on the Hill: I remember when Ed dropped this song and Shape of You at the same time, I was immediately drawn to this one despite the ABSOLUTE BOP that Shape of You is. It made me feel so nostalgic for a childhood that wasn’t even mine and that is an amazing talent that no other artist has ever really made me feel (besides when I was 4 and first heard ‘butterfly kisses’ with my dad). This song made me, for the first time in my entire existence, feel nostalgic for my home town, I remember being back on campus in the city and crying in my bed about home AND I WAS MISERABLE IN MY HOME TOWN. I have always heard that nostalgia is a dirty liar and they would be right. But I found that, even though I hated home, I felt a longingness to be there and was reminded of the little moments of drinking in corn field at my friends barn and running through fences when the neighbors called the cops, of driving down every country road around my house with my dog or best friend listening to music, of all the little memories Ed sang about. It gave me an over powering feeling of excitement for the future; to look back and feel happy and whole at my life as ed does. As I have said so many times, I feel blessed to be alive at the same time as an artist like Ed Sheeran. He trusts us with these personal feelings. Hearing this song reminded me a lot of the same sensation I got from watching the Photograph music video. I felt like he had let us into such a different point in his life, before fame and music and before we existed in the same world. Letting us into his childhood and pre-fame life is such a big deal and he has no obligation to tell us anything about his past. I’m lucky to love an artist that acts as our friend in telling us childhood stories and secrets.
Dive: This one if for sure in the top 3 best of this album. I love the beat and the whole idea of starting a relationship and being nervous on whether or not to trust them or to just dive in. I think this might be the most relatable and best song both lyrically and sound wise on this album. Also, I low key see this as an Ath*na drag… do with that what you will.
Shape of You: I’m very happy Ed released this song first because it’s catchy and attracted more people to the album and him in general. It’s a very different sound and at first listen, I thought it was the SING of divide and didn’t love it, though it is an absolute tune. As I listen to it more, the more I really hear the lyrics. I appreciate a big star like Ed writing a song about the female body without degrading it. Also, he is talking about the entire shape of the female body; any and all types. As someone who has struggled with eating disorders and body image issues, it actually made me tear up a bit when he talked about appreciating the female body because the media usually puts pressure on women to look a certain way that isn’t possible and I guess I just really love Ed’s appreciation of women in every sense that he does. Also, that music video actually killed me and is absolute perfection. *cough**cough* SHIRTLESS ED!!
Perfect: I knew this song would be my favorite on the album because Ed had told us that this song was about Cherry and you all know how hard I ship them. Lyrically this song is beautiful. I think it really shows a very happy and in love side of Ed that we didn’t really get in + or x and I love that he is happy now. It is the purest song I have ever heard and an amazing change of pace from all of Ed’s other love songs because it’s not so sad. Thank you Ed for sharing yet another extremely personal part and emotion in your life. Cherry is extremely lucky to have such a beautiful song written for her AND I BETTER BE INVITED TO THIS WEDDING.
Galway Girl: This song makes me want to take Irish dancing again like I did when I was 4 years old just so I have the proper dance moves for this tour. I really appreciate hearing Ed say “pretty little” and sing about Irish girls. I had heard that this song wasn’t approved by his label because I guess Irish folk music isn’t popular but bitch now it is. I appreciate that Ed has always felt he could stay true to himself and where he comes from in his music. He is always 100% honest and embodies his roots, even when it’s not “the popular” thing to do. He had always talked about how important it is for artists to break in America to make it big, so most artists gear their art towards the American audience; Ed, though, has always kept it diverse and different. He further emphasizes the importance of being yourself to be the most successful you can be. Without realizing it, Ed has influenced and inspired so many people, whether it be in pursuing a musical career or just going out and doing what you want regardless of what anyone says. What a guy, what a bop.
Happier: This one was such a tease because I was really expecting a happy song but instead I got my heart ripped out. I think this goes with New Man because it’s about moving on from someone. It’s very heartbreaking to see someone you loved be happier with someone else and learn to be okay with it because if you really loved them you’d be happy for them regardless on if it includes you. This is another + vibes song and a sad song, and I live for the sad songs.
New Man: This song is a great change in pace and it gets goofy but is also serious. This is part of The Holy TrinityTM: YNMIDNY, Take It Back, and now New Man. This is such a drag on the fuck boys and I appreciate it and the fact that, even big famous popstar Ed, isn’t a fuck boy. This song drags this New Man to the deepest pits of hell with a catchy beat and lyrics about bleached assholes. Clearly this song is the quality content we all expected on this album and this honestly has to be in my top 3 favorite tracks on this album.
Hearts Don’t Break Around Here: For whatever reason, I really thought this was going to be the next Take It Back. I thought it was going to be a rap but again I WAS WRONG. This is the only time I actually enjoy being wrong and I should just learn to expect it with Ed because he’s always doing some type of shit to surprise us. It ended up being one of the sweetest songs on the album. It really continues on from Perfect and it makes my heart feel so full when I think of how happy he is now. As a fan, I think our job is to support his career but also respect his personal life and encourage his happiness; even if that doesn’t include us. This song just fills my heart and warms me at the thought of the place someone must be in to write songs like this. I feel lucky to hear it and anyone who has been through heart break and come out the other side can relate to the complete feeling you find in someone that you know won’t do that to you again. Ed somehow has the talent to make me feel in love when I’m not and has the ability to articulate the sweetest and purest feelings through amazing lyrics and song.
What Do I Know: To be completely honest, this is my least favorite song on the album and the only one I don’t really like. Ed had said his favorite lyric was in this song (Love can change the world) but I personally find it generic. Whoops. I do like the beat and how he mentioned his father. This album has such a big emphasis on family and love, so lyrically it related to that. But yeah not my favorite so I gtg.
How Would You Feel (Paean): I love this song and I’m adding it to the second Holy TrinityTM on this album: Perfect, Hearts Don’t Break Around Here, and How Would You Feel. These all truly embrace the happy and in love feeling of this album and of course I love any song about Cherry. The story behind this song actually makes me kind of laugh because Ed had only just reconnected with Cherry a week before writing this and he says he loves her. I actually really do love the sound of this song, though to be honest it’s not my favorite on the album or lyrically. I think I didn’t dismiss this song because of the back story of it. I think this song has a very + feel to it about being young and innocently in love and I really live for that. It’s a very soft and beautifully written insight to the very precious and personal time in their relationship.
Supermarket Flowers: OH GOD HERE COMES THE WATER WORKS. This song killed me just like I had expected. Ed has always been incredible at writing songs in honor of other people. I think this song killed me just as much as Afire Love did because I had just lost my great grandmother a week before this album was released. I felt an incredible connection to putting someone to rest and getting supermarket flowers to decorate their grave. It’s heartbreaking but also peaceful to know they are at rest. “you are an angel in the shape of my mom” killed me because I have never heard someone describe having an angel in such a beautiful way, as well as “heaven singing hallelujah you’re home” describing the peace that comes at knowing someone’s at rest. He wrote this song for his mother and played it at his grandmother’s funeral, which is so personal and beautiful.
Barcelona: Hearing Ed sing in Spanish was beautiful and amusing because I don’t think it was proper Spanish, but again I love the very worldly vibes that came with this album. I think this year off was both good for Ed’s mental health and his sound. It’s not only lyrically diverse but also sound and culture diverse and I love it. I feel like I’m traveling around the world listening to this album.
Bibi Be Ye Ye: I was especially excited for this song because I knew it was the song he wrote in Africa. This song truly embodies the theme of Divide and its diverse sounds. I remember when x came out and people were complaining that he “sold out” to pop and lost his sound, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I was pleasantly surprised that Ed took such a big leap in sound and really changed his image and I loved it. He got to experiment and find himself in x and I think that gave way to his confidence to make Divide because he did so well last time with the diversity. I appreciate the he takes sounds from all over the world and represents other cultures while still respecting them and of course giving them credit. This is also such a BOP and the upbeat kind of song that it going to make everyone dance at his concerts.
Nancy Mulligan: This is an absolute BOP and the story behind it is amazing. It’s quite amazing that he wrote a song in the point of view of his grandfather, much like how I was blown away by Small Bump. The idea that he could embody the view point of a love story that happened years before he was born is quite amazing. One of the things I enjoyed most about this album was his focus on love and family and this song fuses them together with a very Irish sound. When this song title came up on the track list before the album was dropped, I was very curious to find out who this song was about because WHO IS NANCY? Ed being Ed didn’t fail to let us in on not only his very personal life but also his grandparents love story, which is quite an amazing tale. Like so many of Ed’s songs, I felt like I was almost invading someone personal space or listening in to a deep conversation that I was not part of. It is so personal and no matter how many times Ed is open and honest with us, I still get blown away; especially with this song in the fact that he references his grandmother in the point of view of his late grandfather. His story telling skills forever give me chills and take my breath away. I can only imagine what his grandmother must feel listening to this.
Save Myself: Jesus I was not ready for this song. It had so much pain in it and it kills me to know how greedy and selfish people are towards people who give and are the most selfless. It worries me a lot about Ed, but again I think this song compliments Eraser. He really needed the break from fame and especially his phone. I hope Ed learns to say no and to learn to be a little more selfish when it comes to giving people things, and I hope people who took and took from him learn to be more appreciative. I could say so much more about that, but I think I’ve rambled enough.
So, overall I think this is the best album Ed wrote and I love every song on it, which is a first! He was so open and honest with us about his family, emotions, love, pain, and loss. I appreciate Ed and all he gives us. Love you Ed, I wish you a long life xx
Jolene - Dolly Parton
I’m dedicating today’s post to one of the best songs EVER (I will fight you over this if necessary). What’s not to love about Dolly in general? She’s a ridiculously talented singer, songwriter and musician. I’ve been lucky enough to see her live and she played 7 different instruments during one concert! Jolene is the ultimate Dolly song for me though. The guitar riff, the lyrics, Dolly’s vocals….the only bad thing about it is the fact it’s just 2.30 minutes long!
Gotta start off with Dolly belting it out live, wearing what is probably THE ugliest onesie on the planet (matches her eye make-up though)
Honestly never thought I’d post a Miley Cyrus video on this blog (not that I have anything personal against Miley, she’s just not really my cup of tea musically), but she has a set of pipes on her, and this cover is excellent. I honestly CANNOT believe that this video has had nearly 100 million more views than Dolly’s video though…WTF?!
I first heard this remix at the end of Todd Terje’s set at Glasgow’s infamous Sub Club (officially one of the greatest clubs on the planet…and that’s not just me being biased, it’s a well know fact!) It was a truly magical moment when a club full of ravers started having a singalong to it.
Jolene slowed down to 33rpm is a total trip and takes it to a whole new level.
Happy Dolly Day fellow tumblrites!
Hearts Don’t Break Around Here - Cheryl Blossom
when requests are open again can you do a romantic Cheryl x Reader based off the song Hearts Don’t Break Around Here by Ed Sheeran? Please and thank you.
Sorry if this isn’t exactly what you want but this is where the lyrics lead me.
Cheryl Blossom was not the bitch everyone made her out to be. Yes she was cunning and ambitious, but she was all so sweet. She was like the independent and beautiful princess, making you the lucky peasant she loved. Sadly, for everyone else who found themselves out of her affections, she was an evil queen. She didn’t show it often, but you knew that this label got to her. Her greatest fear, the only one she couldn’t conquer, was her fear of turning into her vile mother. You could easily remember the night she told you about her feelings, regarding her family.
There was a soft knocking at the front door, causing you to stop in your tracks. You had wandered down to your kitchen to look for a nightly snack, so you weren’t dressed for guests. You walked over and looked through the small window nearest to the door. Your brows furrowed when you saw Cheryl, waiting outside your door. You opened it and Cheryl gave you a weak smile.
“Do you think I can stay here for the night?” You grabbed her hand, pulling her inside and out of the cold night air. You wrapped your arms around your girlfriend and she stiffened at your touch at first. Soon, she melted into your embrace. Her arms wrapped around your middle and she rested her head on your shoulder.
“What happened?” Her grip around your waist at your question. You pulled away from her warmth, to look into her face. You saw that her mascara was running slightly, like she was about (or already had) cry. You leaned in, pressing your lips to her comfortingly. It was a small peck, but you could feel her pressed back softly. You pulled away, entangling your fingers with hers. “Nevermind my question. How about we go to bed, yeah?” She nodded in response and you felt your heart ache. Cheryl was never this quiet, even in the library. You lead her upstairs and into your room. When you were both inside, you closed the door as quietly as possible. You turned back around and found Cheryl already sitting on the edge of your bed.
“Do you want some pajamas? I don’t know how comfortable you’ll be sleeping in that dress of yours baby.” She gave you a soft small at your pet-name you gave her.
“If you don’t mind, yeah,” she whispered in response. You walked over to your dresser, pulling out some items of sleepwear for her to choose from. You turned around and saw that she was next to you, looking at the vase full of flowers. “Are these the ones I gave to you?” Her slender fingers traced over the petals of the red roses and small daisies, causing you to smile.
“Of course,” you said, handing her the clothes. “They reminded me of you,” you said as you turned around so Cheryl could change in peace. “They’re beautiful, but not as stunning as you,” you heard her shuffling around, “and while they look great and strong, I know that they’re fragile.” You felt one of her hands tug your arm gently, turning you to face her. “But that’s okay, everyone needs to break down a little now and again,” you reached a hand up to her face, caressing her cheek. You leaned in, pressing your lips to hers once more. Your hands traveled to her long, soft hair and tangled there. You tried your best to convey all the love you held in your heart for her and when she smiled softly into your lips, you felt like you succeeded. When your lips parted from hers, you gave her a small smile.
“That and you smell nice too,” she let out a giggle at your words, but it lasted for a mere moment. Soon her eyes grew sad again and you frowned. “Cheryl, I love you,” you whispered, running your fingers and thumbs across her cheek, “please tell why you’re hurting.”
“M-my family,” she murmured, “they’re no different from the people at school : they hate me” You frowned, wrapping your arms around her waist as her wrapped around your neck. “Their hate is turning me into someone I don’t recognize Y/N, and I’m scared.” It was the rare moments when Cheryl showed you her true feelings that you held on to. This time was no different; you had to be there for her and you would be. “Sometimes I even wonder why you’re with me. I’m so-”
“Don’t you dare finish that thought,” you whispered in her ear. She went quiet then, letting silence overtake the both of you. You pulled away from her embrace, looking into her brown eyes. “I found love in your Cher, you’re the lighthouse that guides me safely back home and right into your arms. I want to spend my whole year with you, no matter the season, and no one will ever change that. You make me safe, like nothing will ever hurt me again. I’m sorry I can’t do the same thing for you, but I can tell you that I love you with all my heart.” You wiped her tears away, leaning in to kiss her again. You smiled at her softly when she pulled away.
“We’re in love, aren’t we?” You nodded at her question and she smiled at you; a true smile. “Thank you, Y/N. I love you too.” You smiled at her and lead her to your bed. You shifted the covers back, making room for the two of your to cuddle. As you laid down, facing Cheryl, you saw her eyes were filled with admiration.
“Get some sleep flower,” you whispered and she nodded. As she drifted off, you smiled again; hopefully in the morning, Cheryl would be back to her lively self, but would no longer be scared to face her family. She cuddled closer to your chest, letting out a small sigh. Her heart wouldn’t break like this again, not around here and definitely not with you.
RFA+V+Saeran Reacts to MC’s Strange Music Tastes
AKA Mc has complete and utter shit taste in music and they must suffer along with her (*゜▽゜ノノ゛☆ (This is so silly I’m so sorry)
Zen
- While you were cleaning, you had decided to put on your favorite musical (sans Zen) and wash the dishes.
- I mean, there wasn’t a lot, but it gave you an excuse for being so slow with them
- Of course, as cheesy as the musical was, you found yourself singing along the best you could, despite the language barriers
- And of course, while you were attempting to belt out both lines to the duet, Zen decided to come home
- At first he was extremely confused. Was that English? Did you know English? Why didn’t you ever mention that! That was so impressive!
- But once he notices you have no idea he’s there, and you’re singing your heart out, he slowly steps up behind you, peering at the….weird musical on your laptop.
- “Babe, if you wanted to sing a duet, you could have told me.”
- You jumped, having water and suds splash back at you, as Zen chuckled and apologizes.
- “Ah, sorry babe, I didn’t mean to scare you. What are you watching though?”
- With a very red (and soapy face) you explain your love of this musical’s soundtrack, even though it’s… Not on the great side.
- But the moment you admit its a favorite of yours, he’s talking about a movie night and that the two of you could probably watch it tonight.
- (God, Zen, Please no)
- Honestly, when the two of you did manage to watch it, he didn’t tease you too much for loving the songs due to how embarrassed you were
- I mean…He’s definitely sung worse.
Jumin
- After a long and annoying workday, he often found it comforting to see you and Elizabeth 3rd bonding.
- But coming home to a speaker system blaring god awful noise, and Elizabeth 3rd in your arms as you rocked your hips in time with the music, was not exactly what he found comforting.
- After taking a moment to find the stereo remote and quickly turning it down, he took a deep breath before speaking.
- “Mc. What are you doing to Elizabeth 3rd.” His voice was so monotone you couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
- “I, uh, was just dancing with her to some music. She’s okay, see?”
- You turned to face him, showing how lazily Elizabeth 3rd was curled in your arms.
- It didn’t stop him from slowly taking her out of your grasp and holding her close.
- “That was music?”
- “Uhm….Yes…Electro kinda swing music.” Embarrassed already, you turned to go cut the stereo off completely, trying to avoid his gaze.
- Of course that didn’t stop his questions
- He went on and on. What was Electric Swing? Why did it sound like his phone was dropping a call with someone in an old records store? What was the weird slang?
- After spending around an hour showing him examples, why you were listening to it, explaining to him how he could use urban dictionary for most slang questions, he finally let the subject drop for a bit.
- “Do a lot of people listen to this type of music?”
- “Not really, I just have shit taste in music, honestly.”
- Catching on that you feel a bit embarrassed, he decided to clear his throat.
- “Well, I rather….Like it.” (He did not) “It’s….unique.”
- “Jumin, you don’t have to lie-”
- “No, no, teach me how to dance in tune with this. You were dancing with Elizabeth 3rd, and I will admit I was a bit jealous.”
- This dork. But… At least he was willing to at least pretend he liked it, and not tease you.
Seven
- So, Seven was busy working. Usually when he was in so deep into his work, you could literally say or do anything and he wouldn’t notice. And hey, you had listened to music before when he was like this. Why not listen to the one song that had been stuck in your head all day?
- You loaded up your playlist, took another look at him as you started up your music. When he didn’t react whatsoever, you popped up your internet browser and started to goof around offline, enjoying your music.
- You zoned out pretty quickly, not paying attention as it switched to a very perverse song, and Seven finally perking up from his own computer screen.”
- “….Mc, what are you listening to?”
- “Hm?” You refocused on the lyrics, recognizing one of your japanese songs playing. You cringed a bit, not realising the language change to hide from Seven, but, oh well. “It’s just a silly song.”
- “….A silly song about prostitutes?”
- You felt the color drain from your face. “You know what it was saying?”
- “You really think out of all the languages I’ve learned, japanese wouldn’t be on that list?” He smirked as you groaned and covered your face. “So, uh, were you in the mood? Were you wanting to try those things she was saying? Like makin-”
- “Don’tyoufuckingdare.”
- He busted out laughing, getting out of his computer chair to walk over and ruffle your hair.
- “But I mean, seriously, are you in the mood because…”
- “…Okay, fine.”
Yoosung
- Okay, so Yoosung probably has the same amount of shit taste of music as you do. At least, that’s what you tell yourself as you finally bring over some of your games to play at his house.
- You told him you loved shooters, scary games, or just basically anything with a good story plot.
- But…You hadn’t told him about your love for a certain music game yet.
- Once you two were all settled in his room with gaming drinks and snacks, you let out a deep breath.
- “Yoosung….Please don’t judge me for this.”
- ???
- You turned on the game, a certain popular computer idol filling the screen in such a cute pose. You expected him to laugh at you, to wiggle around uncomfortably trying to figure out if you were a ‘real’ gamer or not.
- But he just let out a little chuckle.
- “Mc, why would I judge you for that? A lot of my friends play some of her games. They like her music, too! I guess that goes without saying…”
- You looked at him in shock. “What!?”
- “Yeah, I kinda wanted to play it too. Will you show me?”
- Oh my god, you loved this man.
Jaehee
- When you two closed the cafe down at night, you would start a playlist the two for you set up filled with your favorite chore songs and start cleaning. It helped speed things up, and helped the two of you have a few cute moments.
- She would hum along with some of Zen’s songs, or other songs from musicals. If you starting signing along, she would slowly join you, both of you giggling afterwards.
- It wasn’t often a song of yours popped up, mainly due to the fact you wanted to try and hear her sing as much as possible, but tonight one of your favorites popped on and you didn’t have the heart to skip it.
- So soon, as the slow music started playing, you steadily stopped sweeping, swaying side to side with the broom in your hand.
- Jaehee tried to hide her laugh as she watched, failing a bit. “Mc, what are you doing?”
- “I love this song soo much, it’s so relaxing.”
- She listened to the lyrics, some strange japanese tinted broken english, and was lucky she was able to understand it. Lingering affects of working with such a huge business, even though she hadn’t had to use english in a while.
- But you put your broom aside and held your arms out to her.
- “I know it’s silly, but dance with me, please? I’ve always wanted to dance with someone to this song.”
- Aaaaa, you were making her face so red.
- She walked over, letting you wrap your arms around her and sway to the music. Slowly she did the same, resting her head on yours and letting her shoulders drop a bit.
- Even though it was a strange song…. It was nice being able to do this with you, especially if it made you happy.
V
- Usually when he came home, he was used to you being somewhere in the living room, since it was connected to the front door.
- I mean it’s not like he absolutely needed your help, but it was always sweet walking up and hearing you hop off the couch to hug him and subtly try to guide him where he needed to go
- Instead, he was greeted by some solemn sounding music coming from the bedroom. After a bit of of navigating, he made it in, the music nearly blasting.
- As the crescendo lowered, he spoke up a bit.
- “Mc?”
- “I’m laying on the bed.”
- He nodded, finding a spot where the bed didn’t dip too much and sat down, happy he managed to sit beside you but a safe distance.
- He listened to the music pick up again, a male voice sounding low and grief stricken. Due to being overseas and picking up some english, he recognized some words, but not all.
- “Mc, what is this?”
- “It’s like…A novel, but an album? Each song tells a continuous story, but it’s so… I don’t know. Sad, but good?”
- “Are you feeling okay?”
- “…A bit. I don’t know.”
-  He took off his glasses, placing them in his shirt pocket and carefully laying down. Once his hand found yours, he managed to pull you to him, encouraging you to snuggle up.
- “Do you want me to listen to this with you?”
- “…Yeah.”
- He didn’t understand the lyrics fully, or why you were wanting to listen to something sad, but he just kissed your forehead and let you zone out to the music.
- Later on, when he found out that album helped you become more creative, he was wanting you to explain and translate a bit of it for him on the off chance it would inspire him as well.
Saeran
- You were a bit ashamed of your music tastes around him, especially since he wasn’t afraid to tell you if something you liked was ridiculous or not (to him, at least), but he managed to find out anyway.
- You were just picking up a bit since the two of you still lived with Seven and the house was horrible, and you were humming along with your music blasting from your headphones. Since it was loud, and you were more focused on cleaning in time with the music, you didn’t notice Saeran had been trying to talk to you.
- Until he yanked out your earbud.
- You yelped, even though it didn’t hurt too much, and turned to scold at him, but he spoke before you could.
- “How many times do I have to tell you to let him clean up his own mess? He won’t learn otherwise,” He paused for a moment, hearing the music coming from the earbud in his hand. “What kind of emo shit is this?”
- You frowned, yanking the earbud back away from him. “Don’t try to act like you don’t listen to this kind of music!”
- “I did when I was younger, and now I’m an adult, Mc. Something you’re apparently not.”
- Ooooho! That jerk. You cut off your mp3, bringing out your phone instead.
- “Don’t try to hide it!”
- “I’m not hiding anything, Mc.”
- Your fingers typed away on your phone, searching for a song you knew he couldn’t argue against.
- “…What are you doing?”
- You smiled as you found good audio of the song, pressing play and turning the volume up. He looked confused, until a certain G note rang out, and he instantly looked furious.
- “Don’t you play that shit, cut it off. “
- “Nope~!”
- “Mc, I swear to fucking god-”
- The vocals started, and you sang along with them, causing him to start stomping out of the room. But, you followed him anyway, making him yell at you more.
- “I will ruin your phone if you keep this up!”
- “Apologize, then I’ll cut it off!”
- The only thing stopping your argument was Seven coming home, and him even laughing at your music choices.
- You just couldn’t win with either of them.
K-MUSIC: A Competition?
(Thoughts may differ and I respect that)
I will show you a glimpse of the Then and Now of the K-MUSIC industry throughout the years and allow me to start off by naming them as an introduction.
1ST GEN(FATHERS): Shinhwa, Sechskies, H.O.T, Turbo, Seo Taiji, Noel, RooRa, etc.
2ND GEN(PIONEERS OF GLOBALIZATION OF KPOP): SUPER JUNIOR, BEAST, TVXQ, JYJ, BIGBANG, UKISS, INFINITE, SHINee,2A/PM,etc.
3RD GEN: SEVENTEEN, EXO, BTS, NCT, MONSTA X, etc.
For so many years, K-MUSIC has been on the surface of the general scope of the entertainment Industry. Back in the days, K-MUSIC has been, from 1ST GEN and 2ND GEN, been an avenue of quality music. If you take glimpse of the younger years of the industry, taking emphasis on the 2nd gen where it was the Golden Age of Kpop, Music was by all means, meaningful and it reeked of quality and emotion.This is evident that needs no further elucidation.
I’ll show you what K-INDUSTRY is NOW (I will not mention any). In contrast to the previous generation groups, K-MUSIC now is becoming a battle of popularity, album sales and views. It is understandable that these are somewhat factors that distinguishes a group’s success. It is understandable that it is recognition for hard work but it is never a measure for a group’s worth. Hear me out,  if your group wins awards and get so popular, that’s good. But if you say that your group’s the best? That’s purely subjective. The massive success of other’s groups DOES NOT determine the uselessness of others.
Hear me our, Quality Music is not the beat nor the rhythm nor melody but the sense and meaning. One of the renowned singer-composer-producers of the arena, Around Us Entertainment CEO and Highlight(BEAST) member Yong Junhyung has stated that He never produces songs with no meaning in it. Shouldn’t that be the essence of the music industry? The analogy is this: Music nowadays , not only korean but the generalized perspective, music is like a soup without broth.
Music is no longer the core if the industry. Its slowly becoming visuals and popularity with no talent nor skill in the field whatsoever. K-MUSIC is a understand, its KPOP, like LITERALLY Korean POPULARITY. Today, the songs and type of music recognized are those with the best beats and rhythm, views, album sales and ALL BOILS DOWN TO POPULARITY.
If youre not popular and if youre not good looking, no matter how talented you are or poetic you are, very little chances and opportunities will knock on your door. Thats what makes up the K-INDUSTRY NOW, a competition. WHERE IS THE TRUE ESSENCE OF MUSIC THAT IT IS MEANT TO BE ENJOYED AND SHARED? POPULARITY can give you awards and profit. Its a disgusting system that needs tending to. ERADICATE THE SYSTEM.
If you’ve watched G-DRAGON and TAEYANG’s performance on MAMA 2014, You must remember the legendary diss of G-DRAGON against MAMA, saying; “It’s been a year, MAMA. Because you set such a large table/awards (sang), You hand it out generously so your children don’t fight. I’m all grown up now so I get full from even watching,
Just feed the younger ones.”
So, tell me, should shit continue getting released in the form of music or quality music with genuine meanings?
Which deserves who? Groups who just got lucky? or ARTISTS that work their asses off because they simply love what they do? It’s crucial, we’re losing the truest essence when it should be Lyrical Genius and Quality Music.
Eradicate the system. Educate the ignorant. Challenge the System now.
