love in another language

examine your intentions. don’t move, why are you here? is your anger self righteous or misdirected? are you holding yourself accountable? what are the consequences of your actions? are your feelings facts, are they a tool for you to win an argument? are your actions consistent with the love you say you have for another? what does love mean to you? is your language mindful of another’s illnesses and traumas? do you respect another’s autonomy and critical thinking skills? are your emotions enriching this conversation or damaging it?

I love it how when I speak in another language people tell me that I “have an accent”
Like, yeah, I have an accent in my first language, why are you surprised by this?

littyr  asked:

what do you think drives lady macbeth's cruelty and do you sympathise with her at all?

This post and this post might be of interest. But I think ‘cruelty’ is the wrong word. Cruelty implies violence for the sake of violence and enjoyment of violence. (See here.) Lady M doesn’t revel in the violence. She doesn’t delight in it the way some of the characters in, say, Titus Andronicus do, or even Margaret in Henry VI does after the murder of Rutland/during the murder of York. For Lady M violence is always a means to an end. “Infirm of purpose” is what she calls her husband when he starts to get faint-hearted. He’s too full of the milk of human kindness “to catch the nearest way.” For her, it’s all about the outcome. The ends justify the means. Like I said in one of those posts, I think her driving force is ambition. She wants more than what she has.

Interestingly, she never expresses any personal desire to be queen. She does, however, use the singular possessive pronoun ‘my’ when she says “The raven himself is hoarse / That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan / Under my battlements.” She claims the crime as her own, and even though the idea of murder occurs to her and her husband independently, she is the criminal mastermind. She says, you shall put / This night’s great business into my dispatch; / Which shall to all our nights and days to come / Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom.” And at the end of the scene: “Leave all the rest to me.” This regicide is her baby–and I use that word very deliberately. There are a million possible explanations for why Lady Macbeth is so desperate to seize this power for her husband. My guess is it has something to do with that baby she mentions in 1.7 which doesn’t appear in the play. A woman’s function at this point in history was basically to be a baby-making machine and ensure the survival of her husband’s line. She hasn’t been able to do that (for whatever reason) and her husband, at least, is already middle-aged, so that procreation window is rapidly closing, if it’s not closed already. By early modern standards, that’s a huge dynastic failure. My guess is that her power-grabbing is about agency and compensation. Maybe she can’t continue Macbeth’s line, but she can make him king. And she does

But here’s the other part of it which I think is really important and often gets overlooked, and it goes back to the fact that Lady M never expresses a personal desire to be queen. She wants her husband to be king, and she thinks he is fully deserving of that office. “Thou wouldst be great;” she says, “Art not without ambition, but without / The illness should attend it.” AND THIS IS SO KEY. Because Lady M is nothing if not full of ambition. What she’s saying here is “You don’t have enough darkness in your soul to do this, so I’m going to do it for you.” Now. Is that somewhat fucked up? Absolutely. However, that is an enormous sacrifice to make. I’m not going to get into this in depth, but there’s a lot of natural law theory floating around in this play. What’s important to know is this: In the protestant ethos of this play, if you commit regicide, you are 100% going to be damned for eternity. There’s no doubt about that. So, in an insane backwards way, this is actually an incredibly loving, selfless thing to do on Lady M’s part. She is willing to sacrifice her own salvation to make her husband king. Let that sink in. That is so much more hardcore than just saying, “I’d take a bullet for you, babe.” She is willing to burn for all time to put him on the throne, and not only is she willing, but it’s her idea, not just something she does with her back against the wall. That is a crazy kind of love. And that’s one of my favorite things about this play. This is not a unanimous opinion by any means, but I firmly believe that even though the Macbeths are terrible tyrannical people, they are desperately, devotedly in love with one another. Their language is incredibly intimate. In his first letter Macbeth addresses his wife as “My dearest partner of greatness,” and throughout the play they are constantly struggling to help and heal one another. Theirs is a relationship built on love and equality, whatever else they do (and however their relationship is also sometimes toxic and fractures through the play). Look at Macbeth’s conversation with the doctor in 5.3 when his wife’s health begins to fail: “ If thou couldst, doctor, cast / The water of my land, find her disease, / And purge it to a sound and pristine health, / I would applaud thee to the very echo, / That should applaud again.” That. Is. Love.

So. Why does Lady Macbeth do the terrible things she does? There’s no certain answer. Ambition has a lot to do with it. But I think that ambition is rooted in guilt about what she hasn’t been able to provide her husband with, and a passionate yearning to make up for that, somehow. Leo’s character says in Inception that positive emotion trumps negative emotion every time, and I think that’s true here. Lady M doesn’t orchestrate Duncan’s murder because she’s inherently cruel. She does it for love.

She’s the kind of girl you never see coming. It starts off simple and two months later you’re saying I love you, you are my world. She told me ‘I want a kiss’ and I knew I was in trouble. I want to spend every night tucked up in the mystery that is her mind. What is she thinking? What does she want? Is this enough for her? Am I enough for her? Some people you can read; she’s a novel written in another language. Love is never easily understood. Our love was unexpected, the kind you only read about. One second I was flying on a plane, the next we were falling in love. It gives me hope that the world is a good place. She gives me hope that I am good. I look into her eyes and I’m in her soul, completely transfixed. She wraps her arms around me and I swear no one has ever felt safer in this world. Fingers intertwined with mine and I’m sure we can take on the world. Lying next to her I feel her magic, the kind you can only find in a girl who finds humor in everything. She kisses me and I sprout wings that take me to a place where we’re together forever. Sometimes she laughs and I swear it’s the cure for any disease. It healed me. She feels like home. No better than that; she feels like where I belong, where I was always supposed to be. I wasn’t looking for anyone; she showed me my forever. She’s the kind of girl that can do that, steal your heart and change your life.

BTS react to their Hispanic girlfriend

A/N: These two requests are very similar so i’m putting them together, thank you for requesting and I’m sorry this took so long ~

I should be studying right now, i totally flunked my maths test…

Jungkook

Mr. International Playboy would probably show off one of his (many) skills and learn a couple of phrases in Spanish to try to woo you, he’d also want you to teach him Spanish as a way of spending time together.

“Eres muy bonita, did i say it right?”

Taehyung

Similar to Jungkook, Taehyung would be pretty proud that he was able to win your heart. He wouldn’t be as snobby about having you but everytime he saw people stare at you he’d just proudly think about how you’re hispanic roots have blessed you with good looks as well as a good heart.

“Those boys kept staring at you, it’s too bad you like me too much huh?”

Jimin

Jimin wouldn’t mind at all if you weren’t the slightest bit Korean, he would love the fact that despite being so different to one another, in language and physical features, that the both of you were able to still bond as well as fall in love,

Namjoon

Namjoon would be interested, not only in your language but your culture in general. He would kind of just ‘observe’ you in everyday life wondering how your western roots differentiate from his. He would learn to love and embrace this difference between you two.

Hoseok

We all know what western air does to this boy You know, when he puts on a hat, lets his forehead see light and turns to a fuckboy. I think that in all honesty, your hispanic roots will probably turn him on more than anything.

Yoongi

I think that Yoongi would become increasingly interested and intrigued by your physical features because of course the western features are different to the ones in Korea. Even though Yoongi is a kept-to-himself type of guy i think that he would be honest and open about how beautiful he thought you were.

Seokjin

Seokjin would be pretty entertained by this, sometimes he would just ask you to say random phrases before he would burst out in giggles because your pronunciation is so different when compared to Korean pronunciations.

Yoosung

  • you speak TWO LANGUAGES??
  • FLUENTLY???
  • this bean is so impressed
  • he loves to hear you speak in another language, especially if you say nice things to him~ not like he can tell the difference but shh it’s not like you’d say anything mean anyway
  • secretly tries to learn some of the language so he can talk to you in it
  • loves it when you teach him different words or sayings
  • loves it even more when you read something to him and he tries to guess what it means
  • watches movies and TV shows in that language with you
  • some of the people he plays LOLOL with speak that language! now you can translate what they’re saying for him!

  • slip into that language when you’re having sex and this boy is GONE
  • tHE BEAST, MC
  • no but really, he thinks it’s so attractive that you can speak two languages fluently

Jaehee

  • so when she hears you speaking in another language, she’s immediately asking you tons of questions
  • is it your mother tongue? did you live in that country? is one of your parents from there?
  • no matter the language, she wants to start learning it
  • that way you two can talk to each other without anyone except Seven understanding
  • and she can complain about Jumin a lot more freely

  • he was so surprised, especially when you got them to agree to the deal he’d been discussing
  • once they’re gone, he turns to you and gives you a kiss
  • wants to know how you know that language
  • like Jaehee, he asks a lot of questions
  • sometimes has you translate some papers for him
  • talk to Elizabeth 3rd in your other language and this man will love you so much

Seven

  • canonically speaks like 17 languages fluently
  • so there’s a high possibility he understands you
  • and loves talking to you in your other language
  • it’s like speaking in code around the others
  • sends you memes in that language
  • SENDS YOU THE ENTIRE BEE MOVIE SCRIPT TRANSLATED INTO THAT LANGUAGE
  • it’s really nice being around him though because you never have to worry when you forget a word, you can just slip into another language
  • if he doesn’t understand the language you speak, he learns it asap and always comes to you with questions
  • has you teach him all the bad words

V

  • since he travels a lot, he probably knows a few snippets of the other language you speak
  • lets you teach him more vocabulary
  • you have cute little lessons where for every word he gets correct, you give him a piece of chocolate or a kiss
  • you guys are honestly the softest couple
  • he writes little messages in either language and leaves them around the house for you to find
  • like Yoosung, he enjoys watching movies in your other language and has you translate the things he doesn’t understand
  • teaches you some of different languages he speaks, even if he only knows one word
  • you two have vocabulary lists hung up all over the house
  • if he’s still blind, he teaches you how to read braille in return for you teaching him your other language

After a long day at work, you laid down in your bed finally getting some rest. Work had been an absolute disaster and you were suprised you actually made it through the day. The phone started buzzing next to you on the bed, making the sheets vibrate. Groaning, you checked the screen to see who could possibly be annoying you when all you wanted to do was sleep. However your face lit up when you saw who was calling, The screen read the famillar name “Jungkook”. He had been your friend since childhood, but you rarely got to see him because of his increasingly busy schedule, all thanks to him being an idol. The two of you still remained close, dispite rarely seeing eachother inperson. You quickly pressed the accept call button and pressed the phone to your ear, relaxing when you heard his sweet voice flow through the speaker.

“Y/N! How are you?” Jungkook asked excitedly. After spending alot of your time travelling to different countries, you had picked up a lot of languages, so it took you a second to adjust to the korean he used.

“Ive been great, I missed you so much.” You responded, all the tensions seeping out of your body. The conversation went on, both of you talking about what happened since the last call, and about Jungkooks sudden success abroad.

“Y/N, Im really sorry but I have to go now, We have to go on stage soon. Ill call you again really soon, I promise. Goodbye.” Jungkook said, the saddness evident in his voice.

“Okay, Du bist derjenige, den ich am meisten lieb habe, Goodbye.” you responded, adding an i love you in german. It had become a habit for you to say I love you in various languages at the end of your phone calls. It always annoyed Jungkook, because he only really knew korean, he tried to learn english at school but… it didnt work out. He didnt know what you were saying each time.

“One day im going to find out what you are saying.” Jungkook said before he hung up. Sighing you placed the phone back on the bedside table before falling back onto the bed and slipping into a hopfully peaceful sleep.

 ***

The sound of your alarm blaring woke you out of a fitful sleep. Thought of Jungkook’s voice kept you awake, when all you wanted to do was rest. Throwing your hand onto the bedside table, you rummaged around finding your phone. Sliding the phone open, you turned off the alarm and began mindlessly scrolling through social media, as you did every morning.

After checking what was trending on twitter you found something out of the ordinary. There was a tag trending in korean, and after reading it you gasped in surprise. The tag read “who_is_jungkooks_mystergirl”. You hurriedly clicked on the tag and the first tweet was a video. It was one of their bangtan bomb but it was of jungkook on the phone. Towards the end, he put the phone on speaker and you hear your voice saying i love you in german. After he hung up he looked at the camera and asked.

“International armys, can you please tell me what this means?”

Your heart dropped as you scrolled through all the tweets, exposing what you said.

“who ever this person is, they love you a lot!”

 “awww that’s so cute”

 “She’s so lucky!!”

“It means ‘you are the one I love the most’ most simply it means I love you”

The screen blackout and the caller ID came up. Jungkook was calling you. After panicking for a little while you hangup, pressing the red button and sighing while collapsing back onto the bed to wallow in self pity. The secret was out.

After lying on the bed in utter mental exhaustion the door bell rung forcing you to get out of bed. You swung the door open to figure out who was dragging you out of bed, when your mouth fell open in disbelief at who was in front of you. Jungkook stood in the doorway.

“What the hell, why are you here?” You shout in shock.

“I told you I would figure it out.” He said a smile playing on his lips. Unable to look him in the eye, your eyes were glued to the floor and your hands were playing with the hem of your shirt.

“Look at me” He demanded gently, his hand caressing your chin and tilting your head to look at him. He slowly leaned in until his lips were ghosting over yours, causing you to freeze in place. He pressed a chaste kiss against your lips, nothing too passionate or lustful but it made your heart run a marathon.

“Du bist auch der, den ich am meisten lieb habe”

I just finished Paris is Burning and wow. How amazing, strong, and beautiful are all the men and women in it. They had the courage to be themselves at a time when it wasn’t so easy to be. Black gay men and black transgender women had it the worst of all and yet they continued to fight and exist and survive. They found solace at these balls and they formed families and they loved one another and they created new languages and forms of art and just wow…everything about it is so damn beautiful.

ti-re-elintes  asked:

So your tags fuckin kill me, especially the ones about Eskimo kisses. Can u elaborate on Isak x Even Eskimo kisses and why they make you all fuzzy? I'd love to hear your thoughts

HELLOOOOOO MY LOVE!!!

Okay I’ve had this ask sitting in my inbox for a couple of days, because, I really wanna commit myself 100% to when I answer this, and answer it as … fully as I can, because, yes, you’re right. Their eskimo kisses make me all fuzzy. They’re probably my most favourite thing about them. This may get long? But urm … yeah, I need to explain.

Eskimo kissing, honestly, is normally, majority of the times, passed off as “just another trivial act of affection and love”, in most cases. It’s given a moment of appreciation where people go “AWW!! That’s cute!!”, and then … that’s it. You move on. It’s never really dwelled upon that much. In short, what I mean to say is, eskimo kissing is super underrated.

But Even and Isak make it … much, MUCH more than that. They have it be this constant running theme between them, one that never drops midway through the season once they become more sexually/physically close. It remains. It stays. It sticks. Even until the very, very last scene of the season, it stays.

Now, I don’t know if … it was scripted? Or if Henrik and Tarjei simply improvised it, but … once they had their very first, proper, eskimo kiss in episode 5, where Even and Isak spend the whole weekend in bed, after their first kiss, it’s been an ongoing Thing. Never edited out. Always being there, incorporated.

What Even and Isak bring into their eskimo kisses is intimacy. Intimacy on a whole other level.  And it’s amazing, just how they showed that level of intimacy right from episode 5, when they’re both lying in bed that weekend, and they become, for the first time, physically close to one another. It instantly becomes so much more intimate, when Isak rubs his nose against Even’s, and Even waits to see what Isak is doing, whilst Isak is simply allowing him to bask in that feeling of being in the arms of a boy. In the arms of THAT boy that he’s felt so MUCH for. In the arms of Even. And Even smiles. He SMILES when he realises what Isak is doing, because … he’s already head over heels for Isak, but here is this boy, who just wants the smallest of touches, the simple feeling of pleasure you get when you are this close to someone you’ve been crushing on for so long, that you can finally lie in bed and brush noses, and the outside world doesn’t matter. And Even reciprocates it back. That, yeah, I feel that too, Isak. I feel that too.

Yes, it’s cute. Yes, it’s adorable. But I find it also being EXTREMELY intimate. In fact, even more intimate than their actual kisses. Why? Because their eskimo kisses aren’t just used “when they kiss”, they don’t just eskimo kiss then. They eskimo kiss in other times too: in times where they want to comfort each other, or start a conversation with each other. It’s their direct, first point of contact.

Case in point: In episode 5, before Even asks Isak “So, what do you think your parents would say if we began dating?”, there’s a small, private, intimate moment between them 2, where Even brushes his nose against Isak’s, then bites his bottom lip and looks down, in apprehension for what he’s about to ask Isak (because he KNOWS how big of a deal this is to Isak and him). Isak senses that Even’s … nervous … and Isak then brushes his nose against Even’s. And that’s when Even works up the courage and takes a breath in, and asks Isak the question.

And again, in episode 8, when Isak says “Only you can feel what you feel”, Even instantly brushes his nose against Isak, again, comforting him, making it a point of contact, before he tells Isak, “And I haven’t felt anything, quite like this, ever.” It’s SO … private. JUST for them.

Again, in O Helga Natt, what’s the FIRST thing they do? Isak walks up to Even, and he brushes his nose against Even’s, and then traces his nose against Even’s cheek. It’s SO fucking intimate. It’s SUCH a private moment. It’s literally … their first point of contact and communication. No words, just a way of them telling each other, “Hey, we don’t have to speak, but I’m here, ready to listen, when you’re ready to talk. In the meantime, let’s do something we’re both familiar with.”, and they brush their noses against one another.

In episode 10, during Minutt for Minutt, that last bit, where Isak brushes his nose against Even’s. It’s a sign of Comfort. Warmth. Safety. Intimacy. It’s so much more than just being “another physical symbol of love”, it speaks it’s own language. And Even’s deep long breaths that you can hear him take during that bit show him wanting to feel safe, and feeling safe, feeling somewhat content that he has Isak there, and that he’s taking in all this familiarity, this warmth, that Isak’s giving him.

Even in the last scene of the season, before Sana walks in on them, AGAIN, there is this CONSCIOUS moment, where they both eskimo kiss. But here, it’s Even now providing Isak with some courage, with some calm, because even though Isak said to Even that he doesn’t find it awkward meeting Even’s Mum, so as long as Even’s smiling, and wearing clothes, that things will be chill then, Even still knows just how frightened Isak was that night when Even had his episode. Even can still feel the after effects, hear it in the way Isak’s voice became so serious, even if he was saying it light heartedly. And it’s Even that says, “I promise I’ll wear clothes”, but it’s so much more than that? That’s Even saying to Isak that, I know somedays it’s won’t be easy, and I’m sorry that I scared you as much as I did, but know that … I do love you. Know that, I’m still me. Know that, when you get scared, I can feel it. Know that, I want to soothe your worries and comfort you too, just like how you do with me. We can be that for each other. And then Even goes ahead and brushes his nose against Isak’s, for good measure, a visual, physical measure, to once again show that their eskimo kisses are a sign of comfort. It’s intimate. So intimate, that Sana walks in on them doing THAT, instead of having her walk in on them kissing. They could have EASILY shown Sana walk in on them kissing, but she didn’t. Why? Because their eskimo kisses ARE that much more intimate, and she walked in on THAT, and her fond laughter shows that she too realised she walked in on a very private moment between them 2.

And, well, if that doesn’t make me feel all fuzzy, and warm, and safe … then what will?

“Yo también te amo,” he mumbles, acting as if he doesn’t care, but is honestly trying not to kiss you right now

- Yamaguchi: smiles and grasps your hands

“I love you too, Y/N!”

- Kageyama: “A-AH WHAT?” *is trying very hard to not combust into a flustered mess*

- Hinata: “Y/N that’s so cool! I love you too, haha!” and he pulls you into a gentle hug

Question time. I am reading Marcus Aurelius's Meditations and in the first book he condemns "homosexuality." The Meditations were originally written in Greek, I know, but I'm not sure if ancient Roman concepts of male-male relationships translates easily into modern English. Unfortunately the translator/editor does not make any useful notes on this passage. Can you shed some light on male-male relationships in Roman antiquity?

SO. Despite being queer, this is something I read less about than I should, because it is kind of a minefield of exhaustion. To begin, you need to be constantly aware of the huge gaping discourse pits that plague ancient sexuality studies, especially when it comes to male-male relationships:

1. Labeling issues.
Modern sexualities do not map to ancient ones. This should be kind of obvious as they are separated by 2000+ years of history, but you would be surprised how badly this works out in practice. The problem here is that after being violently written out of history for basically forever, anything that vaguely sounds like “gay people didn’t exist back then” is obviously inflammatory. (And some gross academics have indeed argued just that.) The basic idea is that there is no neat 1-to-1 translation system of our current sexuality spectrum to the ancient spectrum, and our modern day realities can’t be imported backwards. However, this leads us to…

2. Language issues.
We don’t really have specific terms for much of the ancient spectrum, so we have to use modern words, which results in people applying their current conceptions. But wait, there’s more! We’ve got textual/linguistic issues where there is no differentiation between words for homosexuality (interest-only-in-men), homosexual behavior (acts-with-men), and pederasty.  Then you have hundreds of years of bigoted translators conflating homosexuality and pederasty. And then you’ve got today, where pederasty itself doesn’t neatly map to modern CSA but is understandably not something victims want distant academics philosophizing about!! Everyone is trapped navigating between Abuse Apologism and the Predatory Gays stereotype, which are both a helluva lot more harmful than Scylla and Charybdis ever were.

3. Reception issues.
With modern lgbtqia+ movements and queer theory rising in academia, we’ve seen a lot more perceptions and interpretations of classical works. There’s a tendency for any academic questioning of these minority narratives to be taken as an attack (and sometimes it IS, like with the hyper-focus on Sappho). A lot of “Western” sexuality movements also owe a huge debt and inspiration to their own imaginings of the classics, and while they aren’t invalidated by those imaginings being disproved, it can sure feel like that’s the goal sometimes. Murky waters.

4. Agency issues.
A lot of lgbtqia+ people have really bad experiences with being labeled rather than choosing labels. Since we can’t talk to ancient Romans and have them self-define, we’re either stuck discussing trends rather than people (which is impersonal), or deciding that because they do X, they must be Z. This results in sweeping generalizations: “well technically they’re all bi” or “if they ever had male/male sex they must be gay” and so on. But that kind of black/white labeling doesn’t manage to describe reality today either.0

5. (Bonus issue: Academia can’t keep up with our terminology which results in anything older than about 5-7 years being cringe-worthy and if I read one more article talking about a two-sexed image being bisexual I’m gonna friggin lose it)

Meanwhile, there are the ancient biases that one has to take into account:

1. We mostly know about ELITE male/male customs, as systemized in unbalanced arrangements and/or pederasty. There is considerably less data on the other 99% of Romans.

2. Active/Submissive. Labels were based on role during intercourse, not interest/attraction as our spectrum generally works today. The stereotypes surrounding men taking an active role (dick go in thing) were completely different than those about men taking a submissive role (thing dick go in). This also aligned ‘submissive’ roles with women, who performed the same function, and so doubled the implication of unmanliness.

3. Propaganda. If you hate an emperor/politician, make him seen unmanly. If you want to make him seem unmanly, say he’s submissive to other men and does other “womanly” things. It was a pretty simple equation. This does not mean everything is hands down a lie, but this is a bias that has to be accounted for when we delve into questions about the Galli, Elgabalus, and basically any secondhand report.

It’s kind of like if you had to write a history of modern sexual identities, but all you had were some 00s top/bottom stereotypes, homophobic diatribes, some philosophical meta on RPF, vague mentions of rainbow parades, and a handful of closeted love letters. In another language. Missing 90% of its context.

All of that said, there is constant work being done in the area, though more (and more varied) work is always needed. Here is a small chronological sampling across a few disciplines, with a caveat that I have not read most of these yet myself – apologies if they willingly hurl themselves into a discourse hellscape.

And to circle all the way back to Marcus Aurelius, I give you:

Hmmm...

I don’t know, peeps, I think I maybe was a bit too subtle again. XD

I’ve been looking through some of my comments on the latest chapter while trying to wake up enough to respond to them (I’m solo parenting again while Io is out of town) and I’m seeing a bit of a trend.  Not every comment, but enough that I’m worried about me getting across what I’m trying to get across without going all screedy in text.

When Yuuri’s thinking about Shouta and how he feels about Shouta he thinks of what he would say in all three languages he speaks and even admits that if he were speaking English or Russian, he’d say that he loves Shouta.  So it’s wrong to say that he doesn’t love Shouta.  But that’s in English and Russian.

In Japanese “aishiteru” or “I love you” is SERIOUS BUSINESS.  (And Yuuri is actually going to have a conversation about this in the fic at one point, but I really want to address this right now just a little).  I think most everyone that has watched anime of some sort has come across the kokukahu or love confession.  The thing is, the actual translation is “love” but not “love”  they don’t use aishitemasu.  They’re using “suki” or “daisuke”.  Literally I “like” you or I “really like” you.  Or I love you, but not that super deep only for one person ever love but more the way I get excited and say I love Chris Evans.  Or I love Yuri!!! on Ice.  Or the way teenagers talk about how much they *love* their SO.  I love him/her so so much, you don’t understand. That’s all in English, btw. That’s closer to daisuke.

But what I’m getting at is that a teenager isn’t going to use “ai”.  And that is kinda what Yuuri is ruminating on.  If he was speaking another language, he’d be saying love.  But he’s not.  In Japanese it’s not ai… it’s suki.  In Yuuri’s case right now it’s daisuki.

And we know from canon that Yuuri’s love isn’t straightforward.  And we know that he put a shit ton of thought into using “Ai” as a theme before doing it.  And you’ll notice that everyone is really taken aback when they’re watching the presser because Yuuri wasn’t using suki to talk about Viktor, he was using ai…

Now I could be completely wrong, but I have read so many articles and forum posts about the difference between like and love both in language and as a cultural thing in Japan, so I hope that I got that right.  Please oh please I hope that I got it right because it’s kinda important storywise…

At the center of our movement stood the philosophy of love. The attitude that the only way to ultimately change humanity and make for the society that we all long for is to keep love at the center of our lives…The Greek language comes out with another word [for love] and it is agape. Agape is understanding, creative, redemptive good will for all men…It is an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return.

At last, here’s my ultimate tribute to this show and the amazing brains behind it. Yuri on Ice means so much to me, and I’ve never been so invested in a series to the point of being at the verge of a heart attack everytime a new episode aired. (Well, not an actual heart attack, but it felt like it anyway). It’s taught me a lot about myself and how to deal with something I didn’t even know I had (anxiety has always been there, lurking somewhere inside my head without being noticed, but this last couple of weeks have been terrible and I even had an anxiety attack).

That’s why I wanted to thank Mitsuro Kubo-senei and Sayo Yamamoto-sensei for this wonderful work of art and love. They’ve given me (and the world) so much, it felt wrong not to give them something back. I don’t want to give them just a fanart but all my affection and support.

By the way, each flower means something! Boy, I love flower language, it’s so beautiful <3

Maybe I’ll post another image with the meaning of all the 17 different kind of flowers I drew here…

So… Thank you so much for Yuri on Ice!!! See you next level!! <3 <3 <3

PS: Does someone know how to post something with transparent background? Because I’ve tried and it looks like Tumblr corrupts it…

Country: Canada

Hi, my name is Louise. I’m a 16 year old girl, turning 17 in May, and I’m bisexual. My favourite things to do are reading (mostly classics and anything about history), listening to music, and watching hockey (my favourite teams are the Vancouver Canucks and the Dallas Stars). I like to watch movies, go camping, travel, and take pictures of everything (though I’m not very good at it).
I’m very introverted and have a hard time meeting new people where I’m from, so I would love to have a pen pal I could talk to and become friends with. I can’t talk to people well in person, but I find writing to people to be much easier for me. I can only speak English, but I would love to learn another language sometime, and it would be great to talk to people from all around the world.

Preferences:  I’d prefer to talk to people close to my age, 16-18. Any gender or sexuality is fine with me, although no one who is homophobic or sexist.I’d like to start talking through email and then start to send letters and packages.

ON WRITING USING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

The joys of having a muse that doesn’t speak your language, amiright? Just like writing anything that you don’t know about, it’s fine if you put in effort to research and understanding the subject. However, languages usually take longer than a quick Google search to master.

That is why I’d like to remind those who use Google Translate for the language’s actual symbols and lettering that it is not reliable. In fact, it is painfully obvious and anyone on your dashboard who is well versed in that language might be wriggling in agony over the inaccuracies. As someone who is familiar with multiple languages, I can tell you from experience Google Translate can help with one or two word translations, but anything beyond that is usually a little or totally off.

Don’t get me wrong here, if that’s how you’d like to do things, float your boat like that. Roleplaying is meant to be fun! Just toss out a disclaimer in your rules perhaps.

However, if you’re reconsidering how to incorporate multilingualism into your threads, here are some tips ( besides all that amazing research you’ve done ):

     1. Use different word styles. By highlighting using bold/italics/brackets/etc you can indicate they are speaking in another language. For example:

Character A: <I love showing my crotch for gorillas.>
Character B: Was that French? What’d you say?

“*I love frogs that ride unicycles!” She exclaimed in Chinese. He had no idea what she just said.

     2. Ask an expert if they’re around. Acknowledge you are not an overnight expert at this, and I’m sure if you know someone they’re more than willing to help with a few phrases worth of translating.

     3. Avoid it. If your partner’s muse does not know this language, they do not need any more information. Often times writing out the translation causes the other to somehow act with an inkling of what’s going on. So, omitting it can provide a much more realistic tone. For example:

He yelled something unintelligible, though the few who understood looked up in shock.

Another thing I’ve seen is adding snippets of a language into their speech. For example, many French muses I encounter say things as “mon ami”, “excusez-moi” or give quite literal nicknames.

I highly encourage you to reconsider if they’d do these things. Are they the type to blurt out confusing bits of foreign languages? Most multilingual people I know of refrain from doing this, unless they are stuck or trying to explain just what they are trying to translate. it adds much more realism than pulling out words you don’t know for your character to seem cool or different. As for literal nicknames; the French can call someone a cabbage out of endearment, and I think that just goes to show all the fascinating traditions that have collected into a single language.

Of course, if there are more helpful tips feel free to add on. If you disagree with me, please go ahead and tell me in my inbox. I’d actually be very curious to know why ( if you aren’t too rude ). With that said, I’d like to reiterate that having fun is the most important. Toss out a disclaimer and continue on using Google if you feel comfortable that way. Thanks for considering this, have a great day!
