Can you talk about Hal Jordan? Just anything at all I just wanna read something about him. Thank you.
so let me start by saying hal is my meme son but in a different way from bruce. bruce is the past-midnight-buzzfeed-articles-with-the-first-comment-being-jesus-peeking-out-of-a-corner kind but hal is the full blown daylight, that-post-that-keeps-circulating-on-tumblr-at-4:13-every-afternoon type. bruce is the CEO behind the idea, but hal? hal is the BRAND. the FEELING. the consumeristic MEMERY
there’s this thing i’ve noticed about his various characterizations i find incredibly interesting and difficult to achieve with mainstream comics, how his first publications have him act in way A and his recent comics have him act in way B, and if you look at them separately, they’re two wildly different interpretations, but somehow, at the same time, they seem to be the same person. throughout the majority of green lantern comics, they’ve somehow managed to produce a solid character development on a continuous scale and i haven’t seen that happen with any other DC character (let alone batman who’s only recently started being written correctly on a monthly basis instead of one good comic every six months)
this brings me to the next point, about how certain parts of the DC fandom seem to treat and/or perceive him. there are still some of you on here who make him out to be a complete asshole on a near irrational basis. and listen, hal can be an asshole. but he’s wise about it and that makes all the difference. he picks his battles even if he starts 98% of them. he’s as resilient as they come, he can think up complex constructs that will confuse the bad guy before they knock him out (i mean, not on kyle’s level because kyle was alarmingly into it), but that doesn’t mean he can’t fly straight into a pole while talking too much, or won’t go for a green glovebox that tickles you to the death. he has a multiplexed personality and a multitude of different reactions depending on who he interacts with, and that only speaks volumes to who he is. he puts up the wiseass act the moment he has to deal with people who can hurt the people he loves (or batman. yeah, or batman) but he’ll take the lead and straighten up when he has to. he’s very duty driven and doing what he thinks is right for others, but it’s sometimes almost to a fault and why the guardians have a pavlovian eye-rolling response to his name
one of the most important things that make me love him more than showing up as the first dude from earth ever to join the GL corps and going “sup where’s the buffet” @ the guardians, is the way he deals with pain, and the fact he’s had to deal with a lot, not just as part of his origin. but he dealt with it in more human ways than any other character i’ve seen, even if it was emotionally destructive
and, oh right, he, uh. he also created a lawn mower to cut the parademons down like grass at some point. yeah. there’s that too
