Crookedly in Love - Chapter Thirteen (A Shawn Mendes Fan Fiction)
I sat in my hotel room the
afternoon after the night we went to the club. I was deep in thought, tossing
and turning my interaction with Shawn in my mind. I know he was drunk, but was
there any truth to his sentiments? Did he really think we could be together?
That somehow we could be in love with each other?
I shook my head. I had to
think about something else. I was about to turn on the television when I heard
a knock at my door. I got up to answer it, and there stood Shawn.
His eyes were wide and a
“Shawn? What’s happening?”
He pushed past me and
grabbed my converter. He turned on the television to ETalk! and I just watched
The lady on the screen was
saying, “And now talking about Shawn Mendes. You all fell for him for his boyish
charms and innocent demeanour. But, check out these photos we received of him
at a club last night. He seems to have been charming quite a few different
girls. None of which were his rumoured girlfriend, Julia.”
My jaw dropped, as a
picture of me flashed onto the screen briefly. What is happening?
I spun around to look at
“My image is ruined,” he
“No, it’s not,” I said,
shaking my head.
“My publicist and manager
want to have a meeting with me to see how we can solve the problem.”
“No one hates you for this.
You’re a teenaged boy. You made a couple drunken mistakes, made out with a
couple girls. Who wouldn’t?”
“Apparently, I wouldn’t,”
he mumbled. “My label’s mad. Because I’m a new star. Every move counts.”
“Well, I’m sure it will all
blow over,” I said, comfortingly.
Shawn just sighed with
frustration and took out his phone. I looked at him with confusion, but he just
typed something in without looking up. Then, he thrust the screen towards me.
I looked closely at the screen,
checking what people had been saying about him. It took me a while to even
decipher what the messages were saying.
@shawnmendes SUCKS. I
thought he was loyal.
@shawnmendes is turning
into this f*ckboy now. Called it.
@shawnmendes knew you were
too good to be true.
I stared, appalled. I
looked up at him, but he was still staring at the ground. I don’t think he
could comprehend what was happening and why it was happening so fast. I was so
horrified and angered at the people who sent these mindless tweets without a
thought as to how it could affect someone.
I pulled his hand so he
would stand closer to me. Shawn stepped forward, and I rubbed his shoulder
“Shawn, ignore them.
Seriously. These people don’t have a life. They hide behind their computers
saying hateful things,” I tried to tell him.
But he shook his head.
“Doesn’t matter. Still
ruined myself so fast,” he responded quickly. “I can’t believe how quickly I screwed
this up for myself.”
“You didn’t!” I exclaimed,
urgently. “Look, so many stars have done way worse things than this and they’ve
always managed to make a comeback. Remember Britney Spears?”
He almost laughed.
“You’re comparing me to
“Yeah,” I said, chuckling. “I
mean, I guess I am. Justin Bieber had a monkey for God’s sake. Louis and Zayn
from One Direction were caught smoking a joint on camera! They survived!”
“I guess,” he shrugged.
“You might have to do some
major publicity rehabilitation, but you’ll get yourself up to where you were
“You’re right,” he agreed,
nodding his head. “Andrew says he has a game plan, and I believe him. These guys
are experts at what they do.”
“Exactly! See? It’ll all
work out in the end.”
He pulled me in close to
him without warning. I looked up at him unblinkingly, and his face was so close
to mine. I could feel his warm breath tickle my skin, and I didn’t really want
to move away. I didn’t want to deal with him asking if I loved him, but I just
wanted to be close to him. To make him feel better.
“I don’t know what I would
do without you,” he whispered.
“No, Jules. I’m serious. I don’t
know how I would survive any of these new things happening. And I’ve been so
stupid these past few weeks, ignoring you for no reason. Picking fights, asking
questions I don’t need to ask.”
“It’s alright, Shawn,” I
“No, it’s not. I promise
you, I won’t ever put our friendship in danger like that again. Not unless I’m
I nodded. “Shawn, I love
you. I’m so glad to have you back.”
He hugged me and kissed my
forehead ever so gently. I could barely feel his lips touch my skin, but it
made me shiver.
“Also, I actually have a
question to ask you.”
I looked at him and nodded.
“Sure, what’s up?”
“Well, Andrew was thinking
that for one of my songs I play on tour, you can come out and play guitar for
me and harmonize. Wouldn’t that be fun?”
My whole heart jolted. Sing
on stage in front of a crowd? One of our originals? It was like a dream come
true, or a world I never knew I could exist in.
I squealed happily and
threw my arms around him.
“I’m taking that as a yes?”
“Yes! Yes!” I jumped up and
He laughed some more, and I
could feel my heart was lighter than ever. Pressure was off. Tension was gone.
“Okay, let me go tell
Andrew in my meeting.”
He disappeared out my door,
and not a few moments passed when I heard another knock.
“Come in!” I shouted.
There stood Brad, and I was
really surprised to see him.
“Hey, I just wanted to ask
you something. Get a few things straight.”
I nodded, letting him come
“Look,” Brad continued. “I
don’t know if this is just me, or if it’s both of us, but I felt something
between us as soon as we met. And I think you did too.”
“Uh,” I hesitated. “Yeah,
no, you’re right.”
No point in lying if he was
being so forward. Although, I was very tentative as to where this conversation
“And, I think our chemistry
is right together,” he continued on. I nodded, unsure of what to say. “But, I mean,
since last night at the club, I’m getting confused.”
I tilted my head. “What do
“Well, I mean, this whole
time, you and Shawn have been very weird with one another. Sometimes you act
like you barely know each other. Sometimes you act like you love each other. I don’t
“We’re just friends,” I
reassured him, seeing as this last conversation I had with Shawn, we had sorted
this exact thing out.
“You are?” he wondered,
curiously. I nodded. “Because it seems like you’re kind of holding a torch for
him. When you saw him kissing that other girl…”
“We were having issues,” I
admitted, vaguely. “But we sorted everything out, and we’re just friends. Nothing
Brad gave a sigh of relief.
“Oh,” he said. “Oh, okay,
“So?” he asked.
“So…?” I asked back.
“I just – I think you and I
could really work together.”
I thought so too, but there
was something stirring in the pit of my stomach that didn’t feel quite right. Nevertheless,
I saw him inch towards me, and I silenced the protests in my mind. He and I hit
it off, we had chemistry. There was no denying it.
So I went for it. He
stepped forward, and I moved towards him. I put my arms around his neck and
pulled him closer. Our lips touched, and suddenly we were kissing. And it was
sweet and nice.
But in the back of my mind,
my thoughts went to Shawn.
