The man would win because he knows the stakes. He’s lived in a world up to this point being a baby sized man but has accompliahed a lot. He has student loans and a mortgage. No matter the fight he will try and that determination makes him a vicious foe.

essays are tangents and rabbit holes and diversions, woven together with lots of unnecessary descriptive words to demonstrate a proficient understanding of a subject you were meant to research in more depth but did not, in place of other pursuits, or could not, because you chose your subject poorly, and so now you must flesh out an arduous ten-page research paper and convince your scrutinizing instructor that you are well-versed in the topic at hand.

emails are blunt. say what you mean. be specific. end it quickly.

Ravenclaw Headcanon

Ravenclaws like looking at the trophies in the school. They like seeing the names, and what these people did. They like to speculate if they’re still alive or not. But their favorite section is a whole wall will names of people who have done “Special Services for the School.” Some of the names are obvious, “Harry Potter,” “Neville Longbottom,” “Hermione Granger,” “Ron Weasley.” While others are names that Ravenclaws have heard mixed things about, or haven’t heard of at all. Names like “Colin Creevey,” “Lavender Brown,” “Remus Lupin,” “Nymphadora Tonks,” and “Draco Malfoy.” There was even plaque for those who could not be named. And above all of the names was magical banner that glittered the words, “Thank you for your assistance and dedication on 2 May, 1998.”

Georgia Martin stood at the back of the media scrum and watched Alexei Mashkov stumble his way through his post-draft interview, saw the way his fingers kneaded the brim of the brand-new Falconers’ cap he’d been handed for the initial official photos, saw the way his eyes widened and stayed intently glued to whoever was asking him a question, like he was afraid he’d miss some key bit of meaning if he blinked.

She pulled out her phone and made a call.

«Let me guess, nice? »

Alexei sighed. «Yes.»

«You know I don’t doubt you, right, Alyosha? I’m not worried you can’t do this. You will be fine. But I know this is your first time to live in another country, with none of the boys from your teams here. It can be… hard, sometimes. I know.»

«Yeah, Mama, I know. You told me.»

«Are you telling me you’ve heard the stories of my youth too many times?» she asked in mock outrage.

«No, no!» he laughed. «Of course not.»

«Good. I should think not.» He could picture her face exactly, and it made him smile. «I’m glad your host family seems nice, Alyosha. I’m sure you will have many friends in no time.»

He flopped back on the bed again and stared at the ceiling. «I hope so.»

«We’ll talk again soon. Love you, son.»

«Love you, too.»

He hung up and let his phone rest on his chest. He’d been to America before. He’d thought he’d known what it would be like, that it wouldn’t be so bad. Different, yes, but there would be so many interesting new things to see, and new teammates, and he certainly knew how to play hockey. What he had failed to take into account, apparently, was how exhausting it was to try to function in English all day. For a US hockey team, the Falconers’ roster was shockingly low on Russian players, so his host family was one of the French Canadian ones. To their credit, they did speak some Russian, but it was hardly enough to have a real conversation. Alexei felt like he’d been practically mute all day.

Dear college students...

Congratulations, you’ve made it through the worst of the semester doldrums, and the end of term is in sight! It is also time for more unsolicited advice from me, harried college professor and spinster aunt of Tumblr.

For the love of all that is good and holy, COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PROFESSORS. Professors like this. We find it reassuring. This is because we care about your well-being. Note that I say "your well-being” and not “your academic success.” We totally do care about your academic success too. But on communication hang, as it were, all the law and the prophets. Why do I find it necessary to write this blog post? Because struggling students tend not to come to me until assignments are overdue, and we’re both stressed out and anxious about the situation by that point. Also, I see a lot of students very hesitant to come into office hours without “something to show” or “ideas to discuss.” In response to these phenomena, I wish to say this:

THERE ARE NO PREREQUISITES FOR COMING TO OFFICE HOURS.

If you’re struggling to find ideas or create “something to show” or… anything, really, then that is a good time to talk to the person who is an expert in the subject matter you’re working with and who is responsible for designing the assignments you’re working on. There is no bad time to visit office hours. You can set up appointments if the usual hours don’t work for you. Some professors even have tea on offer. And popping into a 10- or 15-minute meeting can really pay dividends, I promise… not least because it communicates to your professor that you are serious about developing skills and/or mastering content. Talking with students about work is literally what office hours are for. In theory. In practice they’re for me drinking too much coffee and worrying about the students who aren’t coming to see me.

Additional communication strategies include:

  • Quick pre- or post-class questions to clarify small points
  • Drawing the professor’s attention to tech glitches, if you have an LMS you’re using for the course (I am always, always grateful for this)
  • Sending emails
  • Responding to emails

All of these things demonstrate engagement, and that is a good thing. Also, re: responding to emails… for the love of all that is good and holy, answer your professors’ emails, even if it’s only to confirm receipt! This isn’t necessary for a general message to the class, but if you’re being sent a list of references, or a question about field trip registration, or a missing assignment… answer the email. I’m not gnashing my teeth in my professorial lair, waiting to assign demerits if the answer to the email is something along the lines of “I’ve been really overwhelmed and have barely even started the assignment; can I come to your office hours?” 

Please. If you’re struggling, or if you’re not; if you want a little extra help, or just want to talk more about Wednesday’s reading… communicate with your professors. And consider coming to office hours; there might be tea.

🍁⭐And here the last part of 🌿“Floraison”🍂, It was at first a challenge, because i never do backgrounds, big illustrations with perspective, indoors design etc… I wanted to add it to my portfolio too, last year. But the first one took me.. like more than one week only for the color, so I choose to take the time to learn, analyse, think etc… and now it’s finish, and I’m happy :) Thank’s again, for your kind words, it’s always motivating !🌟👍👏 and I called the character Yori yeah.

Ravenclaw Headcanon

McGonagall will work with any student for as long as they need her to, and Ravenclaws will sometimes take advantage of that, while also being too nervous about it because she’s not their head of house. So one day she makes a point of telling the Ravenclaws that she was a hatstall and it was between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Ever since then, the Ravenclaws sit late into the night with McGonagall, working, and smiling slightly when they hear Filch complain about students out of bed.

No one asked for late night doodles but here I am uploading them anyway. Just wanted to do a personal take on them. Evidently, my take on them is mainly BTAS with hints of other iterations. I dig it. Have a good week ahead folks. :)

Tools for Mentally Ill Students #1

Hey guys! So I’ve been thinking a lot about what I use to control my mental health and keep me on track to recovery. Little things that make life easier for when everything seems hard. They’re not going to work miracles, but they can at least help, so I thought I’d share them with you. Here’s part one.

The DBT Wellness Planner

This planner uses dialetical behaviour therapy to help you bring order to your life and keep track of your emotions. I received it as a gift a few months ago and it has helped SO much. I really recommend this.

Anxiety and Worry Workbook

A lot of students cannot access therapy, whether because of money or your family or whatever. Workbooks can help you start developing skills by yourself. It’s hard, but if you put just a small amount of time into it consistently, you could really help yourself overcome symptoms. Add it to your schedule like homework. I have chosen this workbook because anxiety is something so many students struggle with.

Fidget Pen

We all know by now that fidget toys can be more distracting than anything. However, a lot of people with anxiety and similar symptoms can find fidget toys grounding. This pen is perfect for study, as it’s less likely to be taken away from you by an ignorant teacher. Just make sure you’re the kind of person who is helped by these things!

Sleep Supplement

Sleep is something most students struggle with, and the side effects can be seriously damaging to your mental health. You may be able to get a sleep aid from your doctor, but many don’t prescribe them to young people for fear of them forming a habit. A natural sleep supplement might be a good alternative. Though they don’t work for everyone, and are not as strong as prescription meds, supplements with things like melatonin, magnesium, and valerian root can give you a little extra push towards sleep. I find them especially useful when I can’t sleep because of anxiety. (Always keep in mind your specific body and needs before taking supplements).

Pill Reminder Clock / Reminder Bottle / Portable Bag

Remembering to take meds can be hard. Even apps can be easy to miss and ignore. That’s why I’ve added three different options to help you remember your meds. The first is an amazing alarm clock that says stuff like “Good morning, please remember to take your morning pills”. The second is pill bottles with caps that automatically count down from when you last took your meds. The third is a set of containers that fit into a small, discreet portable bag. 

Fitness Tracker

Regular exercise can be vital to help you regulate emotions and sleep. A fitness tracker can help you keep this up. You don’t have to fork out for a Fitbit, especially since you’re a student. There are plenty of cheaper options out there. One like this, with a heart rate monitor, can also be good for tracking anxiety. 

Intake-Tracking Water Bottle

We’ve all heard it a million times- we should drink more water. It’s not gonna cure us, but it does help our overall health. However, it can be hard to remember to drink enough, which is where bottles like this come in. It’s clearly marked showing you how much you should have drunk by different times of the day.

There some things that I’ve noticed that a lot of successful students have in common and I thought i’d share what these students do to help them achieve not only academic but personal success. If you’ve ever wondered how that one person does it, chances are they use a combination, if not all of these habits. Some of them are:

  1. They learn at their own pace: everyone learns at their own pace so successful students know when they can move ahead of the class and when to take their time on a particular topic. Following the syllabus as it goes can not only waste time, but also slow you down when you get to a topic that is difficult for you.
  2. They work under time restraints: You’ll always have those students who get straight A’s but also get a full nights rest and that’s because those students know that working aimlessly for hours just to feel “productive” is actually counterproductive. The motto is work smarter not harder.
  3. They keep past exams and quizzes: this goes without saying but instead of throwing away old test papers at the end of the semester or school year, get a big filing system where you can keep your work so you can practice and review when you need them.
  4. They have good relationships with their teachers: teachers are literally there to help you, so take time to get to know your teacher and form bonds with them as they have all the knowledge you need to pass a course. There’s also the added benefit of your teacher being little more sympathetic to you when you don’t do your best.
  5. They take ORGANIZED notes: there’s a difference between aesthetic note and organized note. Successful students know that you can take both but not just one. Having a simple system organize your notes will transform your school life, you don’t need all the frills; all you need is a couple colored pens and a notebook to take decent notes. If you’re stuck, there’s literally thousands of template online that you can apply to your own notes
  6. They collaborate with other students: this is important. No man is an island and while competition can be healthy, the best relationships you’ll have with your classmates are the ones where you help each other out; let face it, you’re all going through that shit together whether you help each other or not.
  7. They ask a lot of questions: Swallowing your pride is one of the most useful habit a student can attain. Asking questions can be a bit embarrassing but you never fully understand a topic until you ask the questions that need to be asked. 
  8. They practice active reading: DROP THE HIGHLIGHTER and instead of highlighting every other word: write summaries and make annotation, this will help you to be engaged while you’re reading and make it 100 times easier to review.  
  9. They focus on their weaknesses: I know we all wish that subject we suck at would disappear but the sad news is, it won’t, and if you ignore it, it will only eat at your GPA. So bite the bullet and spend some time working on that subject you’ll start to notice that your grades will ultimately be better as you have a healthy balance in grades.
  10. They prioritize: teacher can make it seem like everything is important and everything is urgent but successful students know that some things take precedence over others. Once you find that balance of putting more important work first, you’ll see your grades start to improve.
