lots of series have made me cry

Carmilla Fanfiction Favorites of Mine

MULTICHAPTER

Music To My Ears by Latchingontoyou

Sum: A highschool AU where the whole cast are all in band and orchestra and have their own secrets. The music unites them all in the end where they all become friends that help each other through the trials of growing up. Carmilla and Laura teach each other that love can help anyone survive even through the worst. A lot of angst and fluff. Not smuf. But there is a sequel with smuf. This series has made me cry and laugh spontaneously. It’s beautifully written and I would reread it again.

Find Me Through The Radio is the sequel to this, and it’s a lot of angst and it’s oh so wonderful. Warning: Both of these with kill you with fluff. Make sure to have kleenexs on hand.

Well That Was Unexpected by HollisteinFF

Sum: I really like this author, they have more works that I will mention because they are so good. This story is alot of smuff with some fluff and a plot that creeps up on you and turns into a mystery. It all starts out when Carmilla gets dragged into a strip club with her brother and she spots a small innocent looking honey haired woman that, ironically, goes by the name Honey, who she finds out is actually Laura. They start going on different escapades as they make their way through each other lists of fantasies, until Carmilla finds out that Laura may not be who either of them thought she was. There is also a sequel to this that I have yet to read, Unexpected Consequences by BloodandPaper, HollisteinFF

Good Enough by HollisteinFF

Sum: (This is a fanfic version of the movie Cruel Intentions. It’s beautifully done.) Like I said before, this author is amazing! This about Laura being a music prodigy and she gets accepted into a prestigious school, but before she goes her father decides that she needs to go out and do something besides just music. So he gets her to go to cheerleading camp where she ends up meeting a certain broody girl that has the whole camp of girls in the palm of her hands. (Literally. There’s lots of smuff) This certain brood also happens to be Laura’s new roommate. Which for the entirely too tightly wound blonde, may be the worst or best possible thing to happen to her. In the end they realize they may not be so different after all and that they both have issues. They show each other that love is possible and they can get through anything. Btw you’re in for a huge shocker in the end, and you’ll never expect it. So please grab some kleenexs.

Finding Real Love by KarnsteinRosenberg

Sum: Carmilla is royalty that forced into a life of obligations when at a very young age of 12 she was snatched away from the life she had grown to love. She learns that she must become true to her new self and accept it as the new heir to the throne.

Laura is a princess, who cares for her sickly father who just wants his little girl to be safe and in desperate times decides she needs to marry her off. The two girls lifes collide and they realize that they will need to work together in order to survive what has become their duties and responsibility for their kingdom. A really great story!! The only thing that I could complain is that english isn’t the author’s first language, but they do a good job otherwise. I read so much of this story in just one sitting. There’s 69(teehee) chapters full of angst, smuff, and fluff.

Where Your Treasure Is, There Will Be Your Heart There Also by churchofyourcurves

Sum: If you didn’t realize it from the title and the hint at Lily’s grave, this is a Harry Potter AU in which Laura and Carmilla and the rest of the cast are all wizards and witches that have grown into powers that require them to go to Hogwarts to learn about their abilities. Along the way Laura’s journalism desires get them all digging into things they probably shouldn’t until they all slowly unravel the secrets the school has to offer. This is a really nice twist for those that fell in love with the Harry Potter series and also enjoy reading about the Carmilla characters. Enjoy! Also when you’ve made it through (you’ll need lots of kleenexs with this one as well) all of the teenage angst, and fluff, (no smuff) then please buckleup creampuffs for the sequeal that it also has to provide. Somewhere I Have Never Travelled, Gladly Beyond.

Under Cover of Darkness by Heligena

Sum: Laura tries to sneak into the dorm that she shares with her broody vampire roommate. She comes home with injuries that she’s sporting from a long night and she doesn’t want to have to explain any of it to Carmilla. Her plan backfires when her roommate hears her shuffling around, and she ends up having to explain everything that eventually leads up to them unraveling the mysteries of the happenings that are taking place at the Silas University. All while they try and pretend they aren’t using it as an excuse to spend more time with each other.

This fanfiction is incredibly well written and has alot of mystery written into it that is nice to see along with hollistein. I feel like it really stays true to the actual show and what it had brought forth to all of us, but this is much darker and will not be easy on you. It has everything you could want in the story. Expect more good things from this author. This was beautiful.

Kept by Bodylikeabattleaxe

Sum: A zookeeper AU in which Carmilla is a Big Cat keeper and Laura works with the cute and fuzzy animals. They end up having to work together despite their differences in their job titles, and begin to see that you shouldn’t judge someone by their covers. This is a cute story that shows you the life of a zookeeper, but also shows you that love can be simple. It also can sneak up on you unexpectedly. Being a zookeeper can tug your heart in many different ways, so please creampuffs be prepared. But don’t worry, Hollstein will get us through it in the end. This has angst, fluff and smuff.

Fool’s Gold by whatsthedamage

Sum: I don’t think there is a creampuff left that hasn’t read this Highschool AU, but it’s always a honorary mention in my books. But this is about Carmilla and Laura going through highschool trying to figure out what they want, and come on people we all know that they are going to end up together, so why is it always so difficult for them to figure that out. Watch as these teenagers do everything in their power to avoid what everyone wants! Erjgh! Also this has to be one of my favorites for the simple implications of The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. Yes, thank you so much for that!!! :D

Absolution by lordvoldyfarts

Sum: This has alot of smuff and makes me so happy they way they supplied it in context to plot and angst. Carmilla has to witness her roommate with her girlfriend, Danny Lawrence, everyday and all she can think about it how she so doesn’t care. Nope. It doesn’t bother her at all. She just can’t stop thinking about the little ball of sunshine, but it still doesn’t mean anything. That is until she realizes it means everything. Carmilla decides that she’s going to wait for the right moment and swoop in to get the girl of her dreams.

The Kind of People You Meet On Airplanes by alterocentrist

Sum: More of a short story, but not really. Carmilla and Laura end up sitting next to each other on an airplane. They are complete strangers that are in for a huge surprise. Inspired by David Levithan’s “The Number of People You Meet on Airplanes”. But please don’t go and read that short story before you read this fanfic. This fanfic is more of a short novella, but please read it so your little gay heart’s can get the well deserved break from all of the angst I had thus supplied. This one is an imagining of what might happen when you sit next to a stranger on a airplane. You never know who you might meet. Expect the unexpected.

Also there is a sequel to this one as well!  "Now We’re There, and We’ve Only Just Begun" Oh how I love sequels! It’s also so hard to give up on such a good story. Isn’t that why we are all here reading fanfics? ;)

Pandemic by Puntrest

Sum: An apocalyptic story where a virus breaks out and the whole cast have to stay in a facility, Silas, to survive the plague of the outbreak. They are the survivors and their sole purpose is to help find the cure for the others that exist outside of the walls. Laura and Carmilla have become roommates that know nothing about the other and Carmilla is determined to keep it that way even as determined as her roommate can be about trying to find out what really is going on within the walls of the Silas facility.

This is a really cute story that feels like I am also reading a zombie outbreak twist, but it’s not at all. It just has alot of mystery and plot twists that I solely enjoy. The love story between the two is really a nice break for all of the angst that builds up as well.

My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose by peerieweirdo

Sum: Carmilla and Laura both own stores across from one of each other. One day Carmilla hears the store next to her making an obnoxious amount of noise while in preparation for them opening up, which prevents her from sleeping at night. Running out of patience, she decides to take matters into her own hands and find out what all the ruckus is. Little did she know that such a small woman could make so much noise and turn her world upside down.

One is a floral shop and the other is a tattoo parlor. You’ll never guess who owns which.

Emancipation by ceceash

Sum: In a world where slavery is lawful, Carmilla’s mother owns her own business that puts them in the upper class in which requires them to have slaves of their own to keep their image. On Carmilla’s 17th birthday, she is finally old enough to own one of her own. She goes to the auction house with her mother, who has allowed her to pick out one of her own. Little did she know she would find one that she would like so much. In order to save the little honey haired girl from the greedy hands of the other auctioneers, she convinces her Mom to buy Laura to be Carmilla’s very own slave.

As much as this story seems like it’s pretty fucked, it really isn’t. It’s a good story, that has a lot of beautiful moments. It has it’s unnerving moments with the whole slavery ordeal, but it’s oh so oh so good.

On Your Ground by kaitlynsgonnakait  (tumblr prompt which is really cool)

Sum: Did you know that being intimate with your patient as a doctor is considered unlawful and a violation of hospital policies of the United States and is a justification for imprisonment? So did I, I mean Grey’s Anatomy, obvi, but it still makes for a damn good story. Carmilla and Laura knew that too, but the was the last thing on Carmilla’s mind when she got injured. It was ok, she had a really hot doctor to take care of her though.

Ohhhh soooo much angst. Ughh so good. And smuff with fluff of course. Pfft duh.

Secret Craving by catmilla

Sum: Carmilla is the new history teacher at the Silas highschool. The same school she went to herself. She never really liked school, so she surpised a lot of people when she decided she would teach, but it was her dream. College was finally over and she could finally pursue that dream. She’s nervous, but luckily there’s a little blonde girl that is determined to make her feel welcome to her new class and even more excited to “get to know her”.

Also, did you know that teacher-student relations considered sexual, whether consensual or not, is also illegal in public schools and immediate action of termination is required? Doesn’t this sound alot like that bloomington movie? Anyone else? No? Ok, well carry on.

The Trade We Choose by carmillasleatherpants

Sum: Laura needs a new job and she needs it stat. Luckily her friend LaF decided to put in a request for Laura to become the new personal assistant of the famous Carmilla Karnstein at Karnstein Industries until she becomes the new chairman in November when Carmilla turns 25. Or is she so lucky? When she looks at the reviews of how her possible new boss may act, maybe she isn’t as lucky as she thought she would be. At least that’s what the trail of previous personal assistants have said. Laura refuses to believe that anyone could possibly be that terrible.

This is reminds me of a better version of 50 Shade of Grey, but without the weird abuse. And it’s actually really good. Plus I’d watch this movie over and over again without feeling awkward, even while watching it by myself. *cringe* ok so not 50 Shades of Grey

The Black Cat by marissalyn14

Sum: Laura gets dragged to the Black Cat by her friends in order to get the birthday present of her dreams. Little did she know if would be a Kitty cat in a pretty black robe.

Little does Laura know her world would be turned upside down after she met the girl of her dreams. Maybe the Kitty isn’t as innocent as her name suggests.

This story a nice alternate twist to ‘That Was Unexpected’ that I mentioned before and it doesn’t disappoint. There’s smuff and fluff.

Veni, Vidi, Vici by standoutinacrowd

Sum: A HSAU, but what makes it great is that it has a nice twist of also being a stepsister AU. o.o. Hmm so the gothic broody useless lesbian and the bright and sunny popular girl’s parents decide to get married forcing the two to have to live together. Whats wrong with that? Everything! Carmilla has had a crush on the tiny blonde for 3 years. This can’t be happening! Now her crush is her stepsister. Ughh. (insert broody eyerolling).

On top of that Carmilla has a bad rep of rumors floating in the halls, no thanks to the beanstalk, so the ball of sunshine already has a bad image of her. It can’t get worse, right? Ha! The blonde is straight and her twin brother refuses to give up on his chances of getting in the cupcake’s pants.

This is going to be interesting. Smut and fluff.

-SHORT STORIES-

A Human, A Vampire, And A Werewolf Walk Into A Cliché by WaterBendin

Sum: A short story in which Danny, Laura and Carmilla all decide that they should get to know each other better by playing ‘Truth or Dare’. We all know the cliche of this one, but it turned out completely different than I thought it would. It’s really good.

Coffee Sophistication by Muse92

Sum: Carmilla works at a coffee shop and she has become an expert at guessing what someone’s order will be. No one has ever surprised her with an order, until now when she meets a tiny journalist. Lots of fluff.

Shameless Smut Tropes by novaprospekt

Sum: I have never felt like a story has ever needed a warning in it’s summary, because well in my opinion I think it gives away the simplicity of the element of surprise. That can always make a story that much better. I have especially haven’t ever felt it necessary to add a warning to a story with a title such as this one, but there’s a first for everything. This story/stories has offended quite a few creampuffs, just because it pushes the boundaries, but if you think you can handle it I highly recommend it. I think it brings a refreshing change to the playground of the Hollistein AUs. I thought it was really good, and you get ample warning before each story provided. So far there are 31 or more stories listen and I think the author plans on adding more in the near future. Enjoy you dirty bastards! Shamelessly.

Anatomy Lessons with Professor Hollis by Fox_is_Fandumb

Sum: Smut with Fluff. Carmilla almost loses her job as the TA for her instructor, Professor Hollis, until Professor Hollis decides to sweep in and offer to tutor her student. The lessons go much better than planned. Maybe Carmilla actually knew a lot more than Professor Hollis had expected.

Special Delivery by bodylikeabattleaxe

Sum: Carmilla gets an interesting package in the mail. With all of the impending doom of Silas, Laura is interested in some change. Maybe this mystery package is exactly what she was looking for. Smut with Fluff.

Break Up to Make Up by littlemonster

Sum: Smut with some fluff. The title says it all.Could easily take place right after their breakup in season 2, but the author wrote it before it actually had taken place. It still reads as such.

In-Flight Distractions by Muse92

Sum: I want to say that the title says it all again, but I won’t be cruel. This is really good smut, about Carmilla having a fear of flying. Luckily she has a really cute distraction.

I plan on adding to this list as I go along. Please if anyone has more to add, tell me so I can make it grow. Ill probably read the stories or put them under as suggestions and add the name(if thats ok) of the person who suggested it for credit.

Trust Fall (personally my fav fic ever??? this writer gets andrew right in a whole new level. also made me cry about aaron how dare they???)

Lessons in Cartography & The Cartographer and the World (they’re a series . its like a continuation of the books! they’re good)

anonymous asked:

yes, can you please recommend some multiple chapfter fics? i'm really focused right now for some reason and i want to read! thank you!

Hi, okay!

For reference, I’ve bolded the fic title and I’ve also linked the writers’ masterlists so just find part one and go from there. Feel free to yell about your feels to me with any of these because I understand. It’s a lot.

Most of these are are Lin x Reader because I read them the most. A little searching and you’ll find some for every other character/cast because this community is so talented and generates so much content, it’s crazy.

@secretschuylersister is famous for But You’re You. I could go on about this one for ages.

@down4usnavy is currently writing/posting Muse, which is young Lin and he’s so awkward, it’s amazing.

@tempfixeliza has some great Daveed fics that are around one to two parts. I’m loving Where She Went (part two is saved in my drafts because I still need to read it).

@manuelmiranduh has lots of multi-part fics, some of the longer ones are Tells Your Story which is finished. And she currently writing/posting Bound to Happen which I am living for.

@daveeddiggsit has one longer multi-part fic that is great called Vegas with Daveed, but also Celebrity Crush is fantastic too.

@teamgtnw read all of When You Come Home and the corresponding 12 Days because I guarantee you won’t be able to function afterwards (in the best way possible).

@ourforgottenboleros Becca made me full on ugly cry when I read her Foundations series. And her Not So Simple series is also completed and brilliant. (Part 1 responsible for @teamgtnw)

@letsgiggletogether As The Radio Plays will also make you question your emotions about everything. I have a desire for someone to write me love letters even more because of this. (Part 2 responsible for @teamgtnw)
(I’ve linked part 4 here but Part 1 is linked at the top of the post, I’m not sure why but Cass’ masterlist confuses me a lot - maybe it’s just desktop? I don’t know technology is hard.)

I’ve tried to find curate a list that have some finished works and some still in progress! Let me know when you need more (because there’s so many more)! :)

ok…. so.. i hit a milestone. one that i literally never thought i would hit again after the successful blog i had way back when 2012 was hippin’ and hoppin’. i’ve had multiple indie accounts; two of which i deleted when i was in the three-hundreds, another i deleted before it even had a chance. and then, in the fall of twenty fifteen, i made this one with the promise that i would not delete this blog no matter what happens. with that said, i did take a mini hiatus somewhere in twenty sixteen due to personal reasons, but since returning i’d like to think that things have been movin’ along swiftly. and as of now, i am at five hundred of you. five hundred little perfect angels follow me and my lil beans. HALF A THOUSAND PEOPLE FOLLOW ME. it’s mind blowing. anways!! enough of me rambling. im gonna go ahead & apologize now if i missed you - i love every single one of my mutuals even if we don’t talk. you all seriously mean the world to me.

anonymous asked:

what is the fic that made you cry? can you share the link?

This one! http://archiveofourown.org/works/6016402

It’s part of a series but this one stands alone! Just a warning that this fic is extremely heavy. I literally cried at every chapter and probably wrote it in the comments section hoo boi was I a wreck

Anyway though, this fic meant a lot to me last year when I was having the worst™ time of my life figuring out who I was and why I was sad all the time. One of the top 3 things that were transformative to my acceptance tbh :’-)

There’s this letter in one of the chapters that I saved screenshots of because it hit me so hard. I was literally the worst sobbing mess because it meant so much for me to hear a parental figure say that to their child. I still read it occasionally when I’m feeling insecure or sad ahhhh

If any of you ever give it a shot, lemme know what you think!!

I also just wanna give a shout out to fic writers or writers in general, your content is life-changing and you guys really make a difference!! Thank you for blessing us with your works :’-)))) 💘💖💘💖💘

anonymous asked:

What are your favorite akeshu fics?

I think you mean shuake

Topaz, Liar Liar, Emesis, Kisses For Your Soul, Night Terrors, Remission, Sepulchre. The last one made me cry a whole awful lot. All can be found on AO3 aside from Topaz which is Japanese only and on pixiv.

Close Your Eyes And Make Believe is also quickly becoming a favorite and the series 35 Ways He Said I Love You is close to perfection - though we have yet to see how it ends.

End of my first year watching K dramas!

So last February is when I started watching korean dramas and since then it has just been a crazy snowball effect. I was trying to learn anything and everything possible about the hallyu wave and that is what this blog has kind of turned into. I just wanted to run down the list of dramas that I saw and in what order and what my general reactions to them were.

Since I am such a newb with korean entertainment, I feel like I watched a lot of the more popular well known dramas so I had a foundation to start building on. (like what actor’s/actress’ I enjoy the most, what genre ect ect.) I have also learned the entire korean alphabet and have been working on vocabulary as well. When I think about it, I have learned a lot and it hasn’t even been an entire year yet!

So here is my list.

First k drama ever was in last feb.

1. My Love From The Star 6/10

I was browsing on hulu one day and saw the picture for it of the lead actress and thought she was really pretty. I thought it might have been a japanese tv show so I had clicked on the description and found the synopsis interesting. After watching the first five minutes, I realized they were not speaking in japanese, it was korean! I remember physically pushing pause and thinking to myself about what I knew about korea. Sadly, the only thing I could think of was the division between north and south and that in elementary school I have a friend who was korean and that was about it.

So I can’t say I truly got fully addicted to My Love From the Star but it was really entertaining. Stuff that really stood out for me that kept me watching was the fashion, how funny the lead actress was and wanting to know about the murder case. It’s funny cause a lot of kdramas have romantic plot lines as I have come to fully understand but in this one, I understood that it was supposed to be in the forefront but I wasn’t feeling it. I didn’t think the chemistry was really there and I didn’t find anything about them that I could relate to. (However I did like the kiss scene at the end.)

Another thing that stood out was the fact that it was not over sexualized like many television shows in western culture. I wasn’t fully sold, but I found myself wanting more.

2. Boys Over Flowers 8/10

Alright. This is where my obsession started. After watching the first few episodes I was interested because of Jan Di. I LOOOVVVEEEDDD her character, she was cute and spunky and I wanted to see her stand up to the F4. I can’t say I was completely hooked in the beginning. It was a gradual process. I really hated Jun Pyo and I didn’t see how attractive Lee Min Ho was with his nasty attitude in the beginning. (did I have a lot to learn about the rich chaebol characters or what? hahaha) After seeing his softer side and how he really cared about Jan Di made me fall in love and then from that point onward I was appreciating every single damn scene with Lee Min Ho in it.

Around this time I had a really bad cyst and was bed ridden for a couple days while it drained, so what did I do? I stayed in bed and watched the entire series in two days! And I have no regrets. I had so many different emotions, I was laughing, crying, yelling at the screen because of stupid mistakes the characters made. Some scenes were just utterly ridiculous but let’s be honest, I was eating that shit up. I enjoyed every moment of Boys Over Flowers the first time I watched it. It was a guilty pleasure.

Note: I have watched many episodes from other dramas like Surplus Princess, to the beautiful you, liar game ect but I did not list them here because I have not finished watching them.

3. Personal Taste 6/10

So after Boys Over Flowers ended and reality set in that I couldn’t look at Lee Min Ho’s beautiful face anymore, I freaked out a little and started doing research on all of the dramas he had been in. Faith and Citty Hunter seemed really interesting but I felt like I was still so new at the kdrama thing, I needed something more light hearted and easy to follow.

Watching Personal Taste was an awesome experience. It was nice to see Lee Min Ho in a more mature role and I thought Son Yi Jin was cute in this one. The entire time I watched it I was wishing I could live in a house with that kind of architecture.

Although I found Personal Taste enjoyable, I was getting the same feelings that I did watching Boys Over Flowers! I was on a hunt to find something similar.

3. Playful Kiss 5.5/10

While doing my kdrama research a lot of people were recommending this one so I figured why not? It had Kim Hyun Joong in it and he played Ji Hoo in Boys Over Flowers. Let’s see him get the girl this time, I figured.

This….drama…..uhhh, guys where do I even begin? I wanted to absolutely hate it with a fiery passion but I didn’t because I liked almost all of the characters. The lead girl was soooo co dependent and obsessed with Hyun Joong’s character and I hated it! There was a second male lead in this one that loved her. (I think his name is Lee Tae Sung) And he was sooo fine! Ahhh I loved him. Kim Hyun Joong’s character treated her like absolute crap. And not the way Jun Pyo did to Jan Di. Like he seriously treated her like crap and she was completely okay with it. Pretty much I gritted my teeth and watched it for Lee Tae Sung and the lead girl’s friends. (they were funny!)

4. Faith The Great Doctor 7/10

So after the terrible disappointment with Playful Kiss I figured, fuck it I need Lee Min Ho in my life so I put on Faith. I really enjoyed all of Faith and this is one where I watched multiple episodes in one sitting. The entire progression with the war went on a little too slow for my liking but I did enjoy Lee Min Ho’s character as Choi Young. I loved the overall story and the ending was one of my favorite endings I have seen in a kdrama to date. I should also make note this is when I was exposed to actor Philip Lee I think his name is and I was happy when I saw him in Secret Garden.

Oh, one last thing, my boyfriend actually was interested in this one. All of the other ones he rolled his eyes at haha.

5. The Heirs 5.5/10

So at this point I was still super in love with Lee Min Ho and there was a new drama that was buzzing all over drama land called The Heirs. Pretty much same plot line as Boys Over Flowers, I was excited!

I have come to realize that certain dramas (The Heirs, My Love From The Star) are so over rated and they aren’t even that great. Although I did enjoy certain pieces of Heirs (Kim Woo Bin, the mute mom, the relationships between the mothers ect) I really didn’t like how feminine they made Lee Min Ho’s character. Like…after watching this I didn’t find him that attractive. Actually, after watching The Heirs I took a break from watching kdramas because I was so disappointed. I mean at that point I was like, what other dramas am I going to watch? Lee Min Ho isn’t in them…

6. Coffee Prince 10/10

The Gods in heaven sent Coffee Prince to me. And Gong Yoo!!! So after my disappointment with Lee Min Ho in Heirs, it was so nice to watch a new drama and actually find a male lead attractive. The entire story was executed perfectly and the chemistry between Gong Yoo and Yoon Eun Hye is so amazing, they go from being best friends to lovers. This drama especially touched me because it isn’t the typical, “seperate the two and give them heartache.” scenario. The music wasn’t over played and annoying, I mean seriously, everything was perfect in my book. This is still my favorite drama to date.

7. Secret Garden 7/10

For the most part I found Secret Garden enjoyable. This is where I was introduced to Hyun Bin who I find to be an exceptional actor. The only reason I am not super crazy about this one is the main actress unfortunantely is not up to par with Hyun Bin’s acting skills. At least for me, it was REALLY obvious Hyun Bin had committed to his role 100% and she was somewhere in the 72% range.

8. City Hunter 9.5/10

After finally getting over my disappointment with Heirs, I decided it was time to watch City Hunter. To my surprise I found it on Netflix so I didn’t have to watch it on my computer! I watched it on my PS3 and my boyfriend actually joined me in watching it. He never thought he would get used to the subtitles but he did because he got into the story along with me. The entire thing was enjoyable for both of us and I am really glad I got to have that experience with my boyfriend. So ladies! If you like watching kdramas and have a boyfriend, I highly recommend watching City Hunter with him lol.

9. My Name is Kim Sam Soon 8/10

I have heard this is the mother of all Kdramas so why wouldn’t I want to watch it?! I have to say I absolutely loved the entire drama, one of the funniest ones I have seen. Kim Sun Ah’s acting really stood out for me so she instantly became a favorite and of course Hyun Bin was awesome. One of my favorite scenes is the piano scene ;)

10. Scent of a Woman 9.5/10

So I decided to watch this one because of Kim Sun Ah and lemme tell you…you’re going to need some tissues lol! For some reason I found this one listed as a romantic comedy…it is not! This is a melodrama if I ever did see one. It is about dealing with cancer and death so it is a serious subject. I kept thinking by the end she was going to me miraculously healed and if that was the case I was going to hate the whole thing but that is not what happened. It was much more realistic so this is one of my favorite kdrama endings along with Faith.

11. Rooftop Prince 10/10

This I believe is the only other drama besides coffee prince that I give a 10/10 to. I loved the story, the directing, writing, acting and everything about it. Sometimes I myself can get a little spoiled and I saw myself in the Crown Prince which made me laugh. When he gets mad and yells it feels like I am looking at a male version of myself. This is a must watch for EVERYONE!

12. Goong 7/10

And now I end 2014 off with Goong. I am almost done watching it! I have to say that I really do enjoy it but it is sooooo slow right now! I am on episode 19 and I am almost 10% positive they could have made this show shorter. I am finding myself dozing off every time the elders are having a conversation. All their conversations are almost always the same. But I have to say that I do love Yoon Eun Hye in this drama.

After I finish Goong I will probably try and finish some dramas I am almost done with (surplus princess and liar game mainly)

I feel very good with this year of discovering the hallyu wave and I can’t wait for next year!

Quick sketch for Gutterball over at Ao3, who writes the most fantastic Pacific Rim fics that made me cry and laugh and definitely satisfied the Herc/Chuck hole in me a million times over (your son is off to save the world and die and you guys can’t even hug?????). This is for the ShifterChuck AU http://archiveofourown.org/series/398722 where Chuck can shift into a golden retriever and Herc made a lot of heart eyes and I am sitting there wondering if Herc was worse when Chuck was an adorable little puppy. So this happened > < I may have made a lot of embarrassing gushing noises while reading this.

Dude thanks for sharing this! I totally need to get the prequel novels of the POTA series!

No prob!! I highly recommend them both, but to be honest I enjoyed Revelations even more than Firestorm! There is a lot that I didn’t include in that post because I don’t want to spoil everything, but Revelations sets the scene for War very well and introduces/develops some of the new characters pretty well also. It touches a lot on Ash’s death as well, and some of it actually made me cry. I’m so glad that they were so sure to include the fact that his death was such a heavy toll, it would have felt awful for them to pretend it never happened and gloss over it!

RUSHISO’S JAPANESE DRAMA & MOVIE LIST (update: 6.3.2015)

This became so long that I thought it was a waste to just send it privately, so here goes!

Alright so, the first thing I want to point out in regards to this is: it’s a sportsanime. A whole bunch of people seems to have forgotten this. It’s not an anime about Viktuuri with figure skating as a subplot. It’s an anime about figure skating with Viktuuri as the subplot. Whether you like it or not, it will feature a whole lot of sports, since it’s the main narrative focus. I can’t find the source for this now (I read it weeks ago, I’m afraid), but I’m convinced I read that Viktuuri wasn’t even in the original script. Kubo-sensei wanted to write about a student/coach dynamic, and Viktuuri was added in rewrites because Yuuri and Viktor wanted to fall in love so badly that Kubo-sensei decided to give them what they wanted. It was always about skating, and will always be about skating.

So with that in mind, let’s approach the dissatisfaction these people feel. I understand that it would have been nice to have the characters in an honest, face to face conversation(s) about their love, but I also don’t think it’s necessary. Why? Because in my eyes, the language they share on the ice is much more beautiful and unique to me. And they understand it much better than people give them credit for. It’s love for them, in its purest form.

To be honest, I don’t watch romance anime. I don’t watch romantic movies either. It bores me, even though I am a highly affectionate person in my relationships and a bit of a hopeless romantic. It bores me because it’s unimaginative and stale, in most cases. Most of the time it fails to grab my attention and fails to make me care, because the characters go through the same motions and the same speech. Viktuuri, however, has me sobbing over my desk at 3am as I rewatch Yuuri’s FS programs. It’s just so raw. It’s artful. It’s brave of the creators to not give us those conversations and instead give us Yuuri dancing his heart out to prove his love for another man over the course of a whole season. Through Yuuri’s skating both he and Viktor starts understanding love, and through that love Viktor’s inspiration is born anew. Their whole theme is about love.

It has to be like this in an anime about figure skating. They only had 12 episodes, and had trouble fitting all the programs into the episodes as it was. There simply wasn’t much time for Yuuri and Viktor to sit down and have a heart to heart, in my opinion, unless they would do it all off screen and that is just poor writing. Just imagine how much screen time they would need to realize their love through conversations instead. It just wasn’t bound to happen, and instead we have a much more unique and, to me, fun, narrative to take part of. Kubo-sensei did say that she wanted to write more domestic scenes, but there just was no time to fit it into the episodes. And don’t get me wrong, I would have loved more domestic love between them! It was so good to watch them in episode 10, where this was given some space. But the main focus of the story is about Yuuri’s and Viktor’s love for the ice. It makes perfect sense that they would converse their love for each other on the ice as well. Everything on the ice we call love.

As for them being trapped in misunderstandings due to the focus on skating, I will argue against it. They have one large misunderstanding that finally culminates in the final episode, but it wasn’t caused due to the skating. Rather, it’s caused by Yuuri’s anxiety and inability to tell Viktor when he plans to retire. In fact, their misunderstanding isn’t caused by their romance (or failure to discuss said romance), but is instead made much more severe thanks to it. Viktor gets his heart broken, but this has little to do with Yuuri’s choice to show his love for Viktor through his skating. Viktor knows how much Yuuri cares, which makes Yuuri’s decision even more confusing and upsetting to him. In this case I fully agree that the characters, or Yuuri, should have approached an honest conversation months before they did, but don’t forget the dramatic arc as well. If everything was absolutely perfect and they resolved all their miscommunications in the first episodes (for example, Viktor just assuming that Yuuri remembers the banquet and living with this belief for almost the whole series), a lot of fun would have been lost. They’re just human, after all. People sometimes fail to communicate, even with those they love. I adore how real they are. They resolve it in the end, after all. Through skating. Yuuri’s last program made me, an emotional rock, cry, because it was just incredibly touching to see him pour his whole heart into his love for skating and Viktor and perform the best result of his whole career. It was beautiful and touching.

I admire and respect the writers for not explicitly telling us what Viktor and Yuuri felt for each other. They showed it, through the best means possible. Yuri on Ice operates very strongly on the show vs tell narrative, which I appreciate. A lot of writers and developers are so scared of not getting their message across that they tell their audience exactly how to feel and react. Not Yuri on Ice. They never outright tell us that Viktor and Yuuri are a couple (as in, we never hear them call each other boyfriends/fiance´s/lovers, although to me Viktor’s use of the term “engagement ring” is pretty obvious. I know many do not see this as proof, however, hence my word choice above), they just show their bond develop and become deeper over the course of the whole season. It baffles me that people don’t find them “canon” or “confirmed.” It’s literally right there. We don’t need them to sit down and say I love you. They already do. Especially on the ice. This is why their relationship is so inspiring and enchanting to watch. They just love each other, and they know it. There is no need for big talks. They both know, because on the ice they speak the same language.

Tl;dr: since it’s an anime about figure skating with a romantic subplot and a limited amount of episodes, their love story developing on the ice makes perfect sense and was the right choice to make. This did not impact their relationship as negatively as people perceive, rather it shows their ever growing love for each other and their sport. It was good and beautiful and I admire the artistic choice the creators made.

1. Manga without anime you would recommend?
I don’t watch that much anime so I have no idea if the mangas in my possession actually have an anime or not, lol. I’m relatively certain A Lollypop or A Bullet by Kazuki Sakuraba and Iqura Sugimoro doesn’t have an anime and it’s definitely worth a read. Be warned, it’s quite heavy topic-wise and it made me cry A LOT.

2. Pokemon, digimon, both or none?
I’m not the biggest fan of the Digimon franchise but I did watch some of the anime as a kid. As for Pokémon… don’t get me started. I love the games and the manga series and I sometimes watch the anime. My Mom is still hoping it’s “just a phase” but over ten years of love and a closet full of Pokémon clothes say otherwise.

3. Mystery book you recommend?
I hate genre classifications (and since I have written too many papers on this particual topic for my German literature studies, it’s a well-founded hate). Which defintion of “mystery book” are we talking about? Anyway, I’m a fan of the classics, so I’d recommend Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes or Christie’s Miss Marple if we’re going by “detective novels count as mystery”

4. Favorite string instrument?
The violin. I always wanted to learn playing the violin but since I’m living in a very small town thre wasn’t anybody who could teach me and I had to make due with keyboard lessons.

5. Ever finished a series where you hated the main character?
Not sure I ever actively hated the main character, maybe thought them overrated or didn’t particularly like them. I’m not good at finishing series anyway so it’d probably be a ‘no’ anyway, even if there was such a series, haha

6. Average amount of songs listened in a day?
I don’t have the faintest idea. I have music playing in the background most of the time so I could probably work it out if I wanted to, but I don’t.

7. Have you ever dropped a series after the first chapter/episode?
Do fanfictions count? If so, then yes

8. Most unsatisfying ending you’ve ever seen in a series?
When nothing gets resolved and everyone is unhappy. That’s very unspecific but since I’m trying to acticely repress the memory of ever watching/reading some endings, I’m not gonna talk about it more

9. is there a song you liked in the past but now you hate?
I made some very questionable music choices when I was a child (it was the late 90′s/early 00′s, what did you expect) but I actually like listening to most of them even now because of the nostalgic factor.

10. solitaire or minesweeper?
Solitaire. Minesweeper is rage enducing and I hate it. My parents love to play Solitaire on the computer but I actually learned how to play it from my grandma with real cards. I still play it like that when I want to remember her.

11. if given an opportunity to be an author of a novel, what era would you choose as the setting for that novel?
It would be a contemporary setting or somewhere in the future. Otherwise it would have to be a fantasy setting with a made-up or deliberately changed history. I’m someone who likes to keep their facts straight, I could do all the research in the world and still wouldn’t be satisfied if I don’t have at least a bit of first hand knowledge / have to completely make it up. I can do it when writing fanfictions but there’s no chance I’d be able to curb the habit for a novel that’s actually getting published.

My questions:
1. If you had the chance to move to another country permanently, would you do it? If so, to which country?
2. Describe yourself from the point of view of your favourite character
3. Did you have an OTP you lost interest in? If so, why?
4. What’s your favourite fanfiction trope?
5. If people had marks on their skin that show who their soulmates are, what would the mark on your soulmate’s skin look like?
6. What was your favourite series to watch as a kid?
7. What’s the easiest way to make you angry?
8. Your answer is never. What’s the question?
9. If you had the chance to save one fictional character, which one would you choose?
10. You have a time machine. Do you travel to the past or the future? Why?
11. Cats or dogs?

The people I’m gonna tag are a funny mix of people I have talked to once, actually know a bit and blogs I follow that don’t even know I exist so you can all happily ignore me if you so wish

Hey Admins! Besides KNB, do you both have any other anime or manga titles you love? Also, when did you first get into anime? -Una

Hey there. I have a bunch I like a lot and have made a list in the last FTS I believe. I got into it because I watched the anime tied to the series Devil May Cry. Not really a dramatic story lol

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time a young Admin Neon couldn’t fall asleep, so she turned on the TV to Cartoon Network. Except it wasn’t CN, it was Adult Swim. A pretty weird cartoon with demons and blood and dying was playing (InuYasha). And then the fire nation attacked I got into anime. And dude, if I told you all the other anime I’ve watched and enjoyed, this answer would be miles long so lets go with the first that comes to mind. The Devil is a Part Timer. Go watch that. That one I enjoyed very much.

Ok I have to tell you this. Your HP AUs have made my days. Since exams are approaching they really keep the Stress*tm* and Anxiety*tm* at bay. HP helped me so much to destress and I gew up with the series so I love it a lot. Honestly please keep writing them. They are wonderful. So many moments where I just wanted to cry because of the stories and because how well thought-out and written the stories are. And don't even get me started in the kink miscommunication. I was howling because of Geno.

!!! OH MY!!!! Thank you!! I love writing the AUs so I’m really happy you like them!!!

Conflicts and Character Depth: Why we love certain characters.

// So, as some of you may have seen or heard, I recently watched all of RWBY with a friend of mine, and during the course of the series I developed some attachments to certain characters…

Yeah, that hit me pretty hard, but as I sat there cursing those devilish bastards at Rooster Teeth, and my friend literally started crying over Discord at the end of V4E2, I started questioning what it was that made me like certain characters over others.  And, in fact, I questioned what qualities would draw a person to a particular character over another.

See, I’ve noticed something about a lot of characters I tend to like.  Riven, Pyrrha Nikos, Merida Cruz, Saber, Rei Ayanami, Rin Tetsuka, Simon from Gurren Lagann, and many others all have some things in common.  No, it isn’t that 90% of that list is female characters (I do seem to like a lot more females than males though as far as narratives, hmm…).  Rather, they all have something fundamental about them, and that is a very strong internal conflict, and a strong character helps too.

After sad things happened I had to wonder where and at what point Pyrrha had become my favorite character in RWBY, just edging out Penny (I’m sensing a troubling trend here).  And that got me wondering at what point these other characters started to grow on me, and why.  In most cases, they aren’t even the main character, although they’re usually important to the story.  Except Simon, but, he technically follows the same criteria as the others despite being a main character.  But since this is a Riven blog, let’s talk about Riven…

Riven faces a fundamental conflict that strains her character and everything she is.  Her teaser image here says it all.  What is her purpose in life?  If everything you know is flawed, what’s the right answer?  For someone who has lost everything, where does she find the answers she’s looking for?  These questions were the things that immediately drew me to Riven, even before she became an inspiration for getting me through some dark times.  Out of all the other champions that I’d played, Riven was the first one to actually speak to me as a character in a major way.

When I played Riven, I felt the burden of her past and her struggle.  And every time she ulted, you could feel a glimpse of hope, something driving her forward toward something more, something beyond, as she grasped something that made her realize her path in that moment.  To this day no other champion, in my opinion, has really “hit” so strongly between thematic presentation and execution and personality.  So, why am I drawn to Riven?  The simplest way to say it is that I empathize with her situation and character.

The same can be said for Pyrrha.  You feel for her when she talks about being alone, despite being popular and skilled, and when she’s faced with the difficult decision at the end of Volume 3, you know that she’s being torn up inside because she just doesn’t know, and she can’t turn to others for support.  She doesn’t want to burden her friends with what she sees as her responsibility.

The same can be said for Penny, where she struggles with the realities of her situation and yet wants to be so much more, to live a normal life despite being so different from everyone else.  And her completely naive behavior makes her all the more endearing, because you as a viewer want to care for her, and you can empathize with her as well.

Rei Ayanami, who many people who have seen Evangelion consider to be bland compared with Asuka, is honestly a very deep character, and, just like the others, she’s struggling with her personal conflicts and her understanding of things.  She doesn’t know how to be a “person” because she’s never been allowed to be one by anyone until Shinji shows up and starts treating her that way.  She struggles with her emotions and wants to understand why she’s feeling the way she’s feeling, but has no frame of reference, despite her apparently being very intelligent.

These characters have depth beyond the surface of their personality, looks, or reactions, and that is what makes people connect with them.  It isn’t just that they’re pretty or strong, it isn’t only that they’re badasses or popular, it’s something beyond just their personality that draws audiences and or readers to them.  Somewhere along the line, a real emotional connection is made, and you can feel that depth every time something significant happens.

You cry when Merida Cruz from Gundam Unicorn falls in battle because she was just getting to a point in her long and difficult life where she was being accepted as her own person.  She was turning into more than just a tool for someone to use, or a soldier in a seemingly endless war, and was able to actually be happy.  And her losing the prospect to live that life hurts.

You cry when Saber is forced to kill Berserker, or when Kiritsugu forces her to destroy the Grail, because you know how much she’s hurting, and how much both of those things mean to her.  She’s fighting so hard to achieve her wish, to make a difference for the people that have lost their lives because of her, and yet, she keeps getting denied, or is forced to add more bodies to that growing pile.

You cry when Simon and everyone else loses Kamina, not just because Kamina is the penultimate badass and seemed completely invincible, but because you know that he feels that loss more completely than everyone else.  You know he is going to struggle with that loss, and it is going to hurt you watching him suffer through it too.

When Rin breaks down because she doesn’t know how to connect with people and just wants to have a meaningful relationship with a person and find understanding, or just wants to be herself without everything or everyone else forcing something else on her, it crushes your heart because we’ve all been there.

Having relatable conflicts being a part of a character is what makes them human, and go beyond words on a page or a piece of art.  It makes them have depth, and gives us something, as an audience, to connect and empathize with.  It is not powers, looks, connections, or even just personality that draws us to a character.  It might make us like them, might make us remember them, but in the end, the characters that we love, the characters that stick with us and keep us up at night, are the ones we form a connection with through their conflicts and struggles.  And when they finally make progress, finally win or triumph, we celebrate with them and share in their victory.

One-dimensional characters are everywhere.  Some of them are even the main characters of their respective stories.  It is no surprise then, that side-characters can sometimes be some of the most beloved characters in any work.  They have a lesson to teach or a story to tell, and even if it isn’t the focus, the main character can often learn something life-changing from them.  Conflicts like this teach us that we all change and grow through adversity, and our mutual suffering is what brings us together and builds such strong bonds with things that otherwise are make-believe.

But, as my acting coaches were fond of saying, “There is nothing more real than an emotion.”  And if these characters and their stories can bring out true emotions from their readers and audience, is it really so surprising that so many people really connect with, and love them?

Just food for thought as you write your own stories and create your own worlds.

Until next time, have a good one.

Art and Review of Cassandra Clare’s “City of Heavenly Fire”

I suppose this at is a tiny bit spoilery, but no more than anything Cassandra Jean drew before the book even came out so I figure it’s okay.

I never want to draw a character surrounded by fire again. Never. It made me want to chuck my tablet out the window. -dead-

I mean, I discovered an awesome new method of painting fire which saved me a hell of a lot of time. But still. The lighting. THE LIGHTING. Never again

Any who, review below the cut. The first section is my actual review. The second half (after the ———) is just me rambling like an idiot.

Don’t forget! I’m doing a giveaway for all the books currently out in The Shadowhunter Chronicles, including all of The Bane Chronicles!
