anonymous asked:

can you please enlighten me as to why izaya would have ptsd? not being mean, i'm genuinely curious. is this related to shizuoka almost killing him or something else entirely? please and thank you

*Spoilers from volume 13 and the spin off series*

Just the fact Izaya was severally injured and almost died is a major factor. I don’t think I need to go into further depth than “he almost died.” That in itself is traumatizing to most people.

“PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault.” (Source)

It should be clarified that not all cases are from “life threatening” situations. It can even be from a recent family member passing away, for example.

Some symptoms are:

  • Flashbacks
  • Bad dreams
  • Anxiety
  • Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the traumatic experience
  • Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the traumatic event
  • Being easily startled
  • Feeling tense or “on edge”
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Angry outbursts
  • Trouble remembering key features of the traumatic event
  • Negativity
  • Distorted feelings like guilt or blame
  • Loss of interest in enjoyable activities

Symptoms must last more than a month and be severe enough to interfere with relationships or work to be considered PTSD. (Source)

His condition in relation to being in a wheelchair and having difficulty walking is stated to be half psychological. We’ll probably get more clarification in the future.

Some things to note.

-In the Sunset novel, Izaya visibly tensed and was quiet for a moment when he heard Usubara could lift a vending machine. He was relieved from the tension when he heard he couldn’t throw it.

-In the Standing Ovation novel, Izaya completely blanks out of the moment when he sees Iroha Mayuzumi in a bartender uniform. She does not remotely look like Shizuo. She was just wearing the bartender uniform. He also visibly paled and returned to himself when he was addressed to by Hiura.

-From Sozoro’s entry in the Standing Ovation novel:

“[……] It seems the doctors have said that if he has the will he may be able to run around again, but he does not intend to walk that path right now. He exaggerates that it is his punishment, but in his heart he may be afraid.

Returning to his old self and once again returning to his home town: Ikebukuro. I have heard that it is the town of his beginning and his ending. With degrees of circumstances. […….]“

So. What have we seen so far that Izaya has for certain demonstrated then?

  • Distorted feelings like guilt or blame
  • Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the traumatic experience
  • Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the traumatic event

Some of the other ones can be considered to. I couldn’t put “anxiety” and “easily startled” here honestly because he only showed panic when he encountered something related to the person that almost killed him. But since we weren’t given Izaya’s thoughts when he had his moments of “panic” we actually don’t know his emotional state for certain or if he indeed had “flashbacks.” The incidents with both Usubara and Iroha we just saw his reaction from the outside. There is also a lot that Izaya doesn’t show as a character normally, even before the trauma.

Izaya also calls his condition a “punishment.” And also does actions like crossing his legs that actually cause him pain. It’s self-inflicting pain to an extent, metaphorically and physically.

There is the trauma of almost dying from Shizuo. But then there is the fear of going back there. From Sozoro’s perspective/insight, Izaya may be purposefully refusing treatment to go back to Ikebukuro. Or maybe his fear of going back is a possible factor into his condition itself. Now is the fear of heading back just because of having to encounter Shizuo again? Most probable. But I feel it could be more complex than that.

I highly recommend reading up more on PTSD. It’s good to know and be aware of to begin with. Also, the more you read up on it the more you can make connections. But the best way to learn is to hear from other people who have/had PTSD.

What is WSLF?

WSLF stands for Whole Starch Low Fat.  Mrs Vegan & I wrote a cookbook to help people reach health goals on a vegan diet without starving themselves called WSLF Life Changing Cookbook.  We have a free WSLF guide, too & there are plenty of videos Basic Vegan Bitch & others have made.  We have only made one or two videos on it ourselves. I think our haters have made more videos on WSLF than we have in fact, strange!  http://www.mrmrsvegan.com

The main concept is that your meals are centered on starches, which are more calorie dense than fruit & veggies, so you get enough food to support your metabolism w/o going overboard on processed foods or starving yourself on fruits and veggies.  The more important thing is not counting calories or portion control and to eat until comfortably full.  Instead of adopting a restrictive diet, WSLF is about replacing with healthier options & celebrating on celebrations.

Whole Starch based diets are what humans evolved to eat & our bodies are perfectly adapted for a healthy food environment based on starches.  When you hit your health goals or along the way you can add back in more lightly processed & richer plant foods and evaluate how they impact your progress.

Starch is the basis for the human diet & why we are human.  You can read more about Starchivores here, too.

We had so many people coming to us for help from weight gain on the vegan diet & since both of us had such a great experience following the McDougall Diet (almost 20 years for me) we combined our experience helping people McDougall into WSLF, which is just simplified with less room for error.  I used to run an app where I would get pics of the people I coached plates every day & the most common issue was processed foods with hidden ingredients.  Get rid of processed foods and everyone succeeds the first time & from there you build back more fun foods.

What WSLF is NOT:

restrictive - you can eat anything you want, you can WSLF 10% of the time to 100% its up to you.  We seek to replace unhealthy foods with tastier health foods.  Also, we have no limit or calorie counting.  Your job is to eat to comfortably full and hit your nutrient needs.

disordered eating - same as above, this is the most unrestrictive diet on the planet that works for weight loss.  you get to eat enjoyable meals, use sugar & salt, have a birthday on your birthday, christmas on christmas, easter on easter, celebrate on celebrations, not for breakfast/lunch & dinner, that is the Standard American Diet & that is disordered eating & a vegan version of the SAD diet is the same thing.  Any diet where 50% of the people on it die of heart disease or cancer & 70% are overweight is extremely disordered.

a cult - WSLF is based on science, not religion.  Our Cookbook contains an incredible amount of high quality sources from Biochemistry texts to large high quality studies on health.  Also, we would rather take pictures of our food than of ourselves.  We are not cult leaders, just vegans who want you to experience the wonderful results we had, we refer you to everyone else in the community Vegan Dr’s, Vegan RD’s, Vegan Chef’s, etc.  & we have a free version of the WSLF guide that we put a lot of work into so anyone can enjoy it.  Its not about us.  We’d rather you worship Dr. Gregor, Dr. McDougall, Dr. Campbell, Dr. Esselstyn, etc.  Those are the real heros, we just share them with you.

I hope that helps you & everyone else who is interested!  I know you got more than you bargained for with this answer!  There is a ton of confusion and misrepresentation out there.  Our WSLF Facebook group is just the most amazing place.  We have had over 1000 testimonials posted, several happen every day & I have just started posting the quotes to this Tumblr.  We get a lot of criticisms, people are tired of fad diets & don’t trust food or people hyping food & I don’t blame them, but I help people for free in the group.  People think that is weird & attack me over helping others.  Some people watch TV, play video games, etc with their spare time.  The reason I have spare time is because of the vegan diet & Dr. McDougall so this is what I do with it for over 10 years now :)  It will always be a huge part of my life.  It has been when 4 people read my blog or 40,000 people watch me order a vegan pizza on youtube.

Life the proof & spread the truth. ~ Mr & Mrs Vegan

What signs of PTSD did Dipper show?

Lets look at the definition of PTSD according to the National INstitute of Mental Health

Signs and Symptoms

“Not every traumatized person develops ongoing (chronic) or even short-term (acute) PTSD. Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event. Some experiences, like the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one, can also cause PTSD. Symptoms usually begin early, within 3 months of the traumatic incident, but sometimes they begin years afterward. Symptoms must last more than a month and be severe enough to interfere with relationships or work to be considered PTSD. […]“

“To be diagnosed with PTSD, an adult must have all of the following for at least 1 month: At least one re-experiencing symptom, At least one avoidance symptom, At least two arousal and reactivity symptoms, At least two cognition and mood symptoms”

Re-experiencing symptoms include
Flashbacks, frightening dreams, and bad thoughts

Avoidance symptoms include
staying away from places, items, or events that are reminders of traumatic experiences AND/OR avoiding thoughts or feelings related to that traumatic event.

Arousal and Reactivity symptoms include
Being easily startled, Feeling tense or “on edge”, Having difficulty sleeping, Having angry outbursts.

Cognition and mood symptoms include
Trouble remembering key features of the traumatic event, Negative thoughts about oneself or the world, Distorted feelings like guilt or blame, Loss of interest in enjoyable activities.

Risk Factors and Resilience Factors for PTSD

Some factors that increase risk for PTSD include
Living through dangerous events and traumas
Getting hurt
Seeing another person hurt, or seeing a dead body
Childhood trauma
Feeling horror, helplessness, or extreme fear

Having little or no social support after the event
Dealing with extra stress after the event, such as loss of a loved one, pain and injury, or loss of a job or home
Having a history of mental illness
or substance abuse

Some resilience factors that may reduce the risk of PTSD include
Seeking out support from other people, such as friends and family
Finding a support group after a traumatic event
Learning to feel good about one’s own actions in the face of danger

Having a positive coping strategy, or a way of getting through the bad event and learning from it
Being able to act and respond effectively despite feeling fear

After going through and bold/italicizing everything that aaplied to DIpper, I realized that it would have been easier to bold items that DIDN’T apply to him surrounding the events that SPECIFICALLY BILL affected.

The ONLY thing that I wasn’t sure about was avoidance behaviors, but that simply may have to do with necessity and story telling- HOWEVER one could argue that sitting down hooked up to a machine so that you can have your brain re-coded could be classified as an avoidant behavior.

Not everything that I’m talking about is in the specific video that I cited. and much of it is sprinkled throughout season 2. I can’t believe I’m making this post.

Bill fucked Dipper up something SERIOUS. Thank the fucking lord that he has such a supportive family, or else that boy would have been fucked for life.

A security guard at a 2013 WWE house show has filed a lawsuit after he says he was hit with a chair. The suit (via Courthouse News Service) names Dean Ambrose, John Cena, Ryback, Ryback, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Kane, Daniel Bryan, Fandango, R-Truth, Cody Rhodes, Cesaro and Damien Sandow as defendants and claims that he was struck from behind with the chair “about the head, neck, and back.”

The plaintiff, Troy Rivers, says he was hired to work an event in the Savannah Civic Center and that his job was simply to “stand with his back to the ring” and monitor the crowd. The hit happened “suddenly, with no warning” and while he believes it was Dean Ambrose who hit him, he isn’t sure because his back was turned.

Rivers attorney said, “We haven’t reviewed the video from the event yet, so we’re bringing in everyone on the card that night. Only one guy did it, but we don’t know which one yet.”

Rivers claims the incident left him with “serious, significant and permanent personal injuries.” His wife, who is also a plaintiff, says that the incident has cost her “conjugal fellowship” with Rivers and accuses WWE of gross negligence causing “physical and mental anguish, diminishment of his earning capacity, and continues to suffer a loss of enjoyment of life.”

Rivers is seeking unspecified punitive and compensatory damages.

WWE said that they have no knowledge of “any such incident and the security company that hired the plaintiff doesn’t have any record of this matter either. Furthermore, the plaintiff’s attorney has admitted he has no basis to sue the individual defendants named in the lawsuit.”

So you wait 2 years to sue?  Plus since when do they video tape house shows??
