losing a battle winning the war

anonymous asked:

Do you have any new star wars fic recs? I may have gone and read through all the ones in your tag :)

JUST ONE. AFTER THE BATTLE. explicit, rey/phasma

Rey always allows herself one cigarette after a battle, win or lose. Which is fortunate, considering she can’t determine if dallying with a captain of the First Order is a victory or a defeat.

Listen, I’ve been on the hunt for good Rey/Phasma since the movie came out, and this is exactly the flavor I was craving—bad decisions, grudging connection, battlefield sex. You can practically hear ‘jealous of your cigarette’ playing in the background as you read.

TAXICAB. gen, ocs

Escorting a mathematician from a university to a transport should not be an Empire-shaking assignment.

On stormtroopers, math, and the meaning of names. A really nice bit of worldbuilding, with a light touch of humor and great OCs.

MY FRIENDS, MY FRIENDS FORGIVE ME. gen, bail organa & leia organa

Bail has never tried to outrun his ghosts. He is an Organa and an Antilles and the husband of the Queen of Alderaan; he does not run from anything.

But, sometimes. Sometimes his ghosts pop up and stare him in the face like his life is a cheap horror holofilm, and he cannot help but be taken aback.

I’m very picky about Bail and Leia (and really the Organas as a whole) but this is such a nice fic about Bail seeing Anakin and Padme in Leia.

EMPTY HEAD. explicit, kylo ren | ben/poe dameron

The first time Ben Organa uses a Jedi mind trick on Poe Dameron, it’s an accident. All the other times aren’t. It leaves an impression, to say the least.

WARNINGS FOR RAPE/ABUSE & DUBCON—I am weak for darkfic that gets creatively horrible. (I think I’ve recced ‘fraud in a field of poppies’ before, it belongs to the same awful family as this.) Especially once you throw in an increasingly twisted Kylo Ben, and the full terrible implications of the Jedi mind trick.

BOUND. explicit, rey/kylo ren

Rey and Kylo are stranded together on a world without technology where they cannot use the Force.

I love Rey/Kylo Ren as a pairing, but it’s hard to find fic with good characterization of both parties. This delivers on the prickly, grudging, stubborn, sulking, twisted up pair of them, and how they manage to find a kind of uncomfortable common ground despite that.

INVINCIBLE SUMMER. gen, finn-centric.

Finn is recaptured by the First Order. He will not give up as easily as they would prefer.

An extremely delightful Finn-centric adventure, plus you get to imagine Finn doing push ups, which is a plus.

Hey I was wondering could you list YOI completed fics which are long and good ? "-"

What a great ask! Shoutout to all the amazing fic writers who write full freaking novels for free because they love the show that much. You all do such great work for the fandom and I thank you all so much. Here are some of my favourite  long, completed fics!

AU where Victor is the the most famous actor in Hollywood and Yuuri is a silver medalist at this year’s GPF… and also has a huge crush on Victor. Yuuri auditions to become his skating coach for a movie with the help of Pitchit and cuteness ensues. Fun, great writing, good plot. Lots of fluff, some angst, and a little bit of smut. Amazing fic!

Three years after the series, Yuuri has retired, and he and Viktor live in America. It’s no secret that Viktor likes to make impulsive decisions. Cute adoption fic! Bonus angsty Yurio..

Melodies Unheard, but Felt All the Same by Watermelonsmellinfellon, Mature, 69k
Yuuri wanted to make history as the first deaf man to win the Grand Prix Final. Of course he’s a little skeptical of Victor Nikiforov’s presence, but Victor proves to be different, and Yuuri appreciates that. Amazing fic that truly shows that love wins, no matter what obstacles face them.

Victor Nikiforov is poised to win gold in his fifth consecutive Grand Prix Final. He has the world at his feet, is unparalleled in the sport–right up until a snowstorm blows into Sochi, and he finds himself repeating the same day over and over and over. He stumbles over Yuuri Katsuki, and everything changes. THE GROUNDHOG DAY AU!!

Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches by Reiya, Explicit, 197k
Rivals AU where Yuuri’s main goal, ever since he was a child, is to beat Victor and win the GPF. SO MUCH ANGST (like, so much) and deliciously hot, hot, hot! You might die from reading this… it’s that good. Thumbs up!

New York Times-bestselling author Viktor Nikiforov arrives in the sleepy seaside town of Torvill Cove to cure his writer’s block. After encountering local wallflower Yuuri Katsuki at a party, he discovers that this mysterious dark-haired man has a couple secrets up his sleeve. And Viktor will be damned if he doesn’t find out just what those secrets are. LOVE this fic!

Love So Life by shamarmon, Teen, 114k
Yuuri Katsuki was simply living his college life, teaching ice skating lessons to little kids, when suddenly his idol and champion figure skater Victor Nikiforov bursts in and requests that he start babysitting his three year old nephew, Yuri Plisetsky. Yuuri finds himself growing to be a part of their family and helping them work through their complicated family issues. Super cute!

lie to make me like you by cityboys, Mature, 80k
Victor is a retired actor looking for love, and Yuuri happens to be the (un)fortunate soul to unwittingly ask him out at the beginning of the month. Except relationships don’t come with a script, and it’s much harder understanding love than roles. Awesome actor AU!

Until You Return to Me by BatMads, Teen, 113k
Yuuri and Victor are in St. Petersburg together at last, but when Yuuri has difficulty adjusting to the transition and tragedy strikes, it seems as though they may be separated forever. An Intangible Force of Motion by doeinstinct, Teen, 76k
The new season is in full-swing, and Viktor is realizing just how much work it is to coach and compete, but the exhilaration is worth it. The pain in his leg is probably just from overworking. Probably. So sad but so good.

In which yuuri is a simple barista, viktor is a famous movie star, and yuri is an 8 year old kid stuck in the middle of it. I adore this fic!

matched by bigspoonnoya, Explicit, 52k
Viktor Nikiforov considers himself an excellent matchmaker, but there’s one love life he can’t seem to get right: his own.

A lot of people will write long posts justifying why it’s wrong the more popular actors/movies didn’t win, but here’s one for Ruth Negga.

Ruth was born to an Irishwoman and an Ethiopian man, Ruth has been working tirelessly for years in various shows and movies.

Ruth portrayed Mildred Loving, a woman who was arrested for sleeping in bed with her husband. A woman who was arrested after the birth of her first child. A woman who was not allowed to happily be with her husband or family for over ten years because of the color of her skin. When they finally won their case, Mildred lost her husband seven years later to a drunk drive. Ruth wore her ACLU ribbon today partly to represent them.

Ruth’s performance in Loving was heartstopping and everyone I’ve shown the movie to in real life watched with awe as she brought so much emotion and voice out of a woman who hardly spoke. Watch archive footage of Mildred and then watch Ruth’s performance. It’s completely astounding and you can TELL she worked so hard to bring her to life, to tell us the story of this woman who’s been only mentioned briefly in schoolbooks. Just a scene of her, standing in the sun in the countryside, had me in tears.

I can’t quite wrap my head around a white, fictional character in a performance that was underwhelming in comparison to Ruth’s winning. I just can’t. Was she undermined because of race? Perhaps. Was it because she was a new face? I don’t know.

What I do know is that Ruth Negga won that red carpet tonight and she truly kept her “always be posing” rule at maximum performance. Everytime the camera flipped to her (which was quite often) she looked so ethereal. “We may lose the small battles but win the big war.” I feel like we’ll see Ruth Negga on that red carpet again soon. She’s got so many Preacher fans at her back and she’s definitely taking the world by storm. I can’t wait to see what she does next and I hope she has a really nice night and a good night’s sleep.

Could you do 1 or 54, please?

Short opinion: Anyone who says that this series became dark over time has clearly not reread the first book in a while.

Long opinion:

While it is true that there are lighter books (#14, #35, #44, #51) and there are darker books (#6, #22, #30, #33, #52) I’m not convinced that the series gets darker as it goes.  Sure, the kids become more violent, more competent, and more morally compromised.  Yes, the yeerks gradually win the war all the way up through #52 at which point they start losing.  No, the protagonists do not grow as people over the course of the story so much as they fall apart as people over the course of the story.  However, right from the start K.A. Applegate makes no bones about the fact that this is a war, one in which there will be no nice neat simple answers, so you’d better strap in, kids, because these depictions of trauma are not for the faint of heart.

This book is about its protagonists fighting a major battle which they lose. It contains a scene with Marco extracting a promise from Jake that Jake will kill him before letting him become a controller.  It heavily implies that Cassie is the first person on the team to become a murderer, because she doesn’t have another way to stop the controller-cop from telling the other yeerks she was morphing.  It features a battle in which the “good guys” suffer casualties (Tobias is trapped in morph; several human hosts get killed) while also accomplishing almost nothing to advance the war effort (they free one human? Maybe?), giving us the sense that Marco was probably right that they should have stayed home.  It lovingly describes pieces of Elfangor’s body falling from Visser Three’s jaws so that the hungry taxxons below can devour them.

The series also doesn’t magically become lighter from there.  The arc of #2 hinges on the horrifying realization that, as awful as Melissa Chapman’s life has become living with neglectful and emotionally abusive parents, the alternative is infinitely worse because those same parents are allowing their conscious willpower to be destroyed in order to shield her from slavery.  #3 builds up to and then graphically describes a scene in which its narrator attempts to commit suicide.  Although #4 is lighter overall, it explores the impact Marco’s death would have on everyone from Peter to Cassie.  #5 has The Scene With The Ants.  So on and so forth.  But that’s what makes this series so freaking good: it is always horrifying, it’s always funny, it’s always heartwarming, it’s always tense, and it always features a clever balance of plot and character driving one another forward.  K.A. Applegate is a grand master wizard when it comes to emotional flow, one who does far better than most series writers I’ve ever encountered (JKR, Cornelia Funke, Jonathan Stroud, JRRT, Jeff Lindsay: take notes) at imbuing her tragedy with comedy and her comedy with tragedy without ever mocking her characters’ real pain or overdramatizing her more ridiculous plots.

Anyway, this book doesn’t spend any time at all messing around before it launches the characters on their adventure.  The narration fulfills the promise on the back of the book (“everyone is in really big trouble.  Yeah, even you.”) right from the start by giving us enough details to make the Animorphs’ hometown vivid and individuated while also making it feel like Anywheresville, USA.  Jake’s got the most “typical” (according to fiction, anyway) life of anyone on the team: married parents, golden retriever, one sibling, big suburban house, home computer, swingset in the backyard.  And it turns out that not only are there aliens invading, there are aliens that have already invaded his house.  Jake’s been surrounded on all sides by the war for weeks if not months, and he was just pleasantly clueless enough to avoid realizing that fact until Elfangor came along and woke that boy up.  Of course Jake’s apple-pie life is the exception not the rule on this team, but the fact remains that he’s the “everyman” on the team… and he’s also under the most immediate threat of infestation.  Jake punches Marco in the head for implying that Tom’s a controller (as Cates mentioned, Jake’s a heck of a lot less practical about the whole aliens-have-your-family bit than Marco is) and we can’t even necessarily blame him—he has the most to lose in this war of anyone on the team.  The call knows where he lives; he doesn’t even have the option of refusal.

The plot wastes no time at all in having the kids encounter an alien and end up on the run for their lives, but also gives us tons of characterization along the way.  Rachel thinks Jake’s an idiot for thinking he can protect her and Cassie from anything, but agrees to walk home with him and Marco so that Cassie can have a chance to talk to him.  Jake really is kind of an idiot, since he’s apparently in the habit of climbing abandoned construction equipment in his spare time.  Marco’s a fairly brilliant video game player and all-around more mature than Jake, not that you’d know it from all his irreverent jokes throughout this plot.  Jake is adorably baffled by Rachel’s response to Tobias, because he thinks of his cousin as the kind of person who eats men for breakfast and totally fails to consider that maybe she’s got a crush like any other teenager on the planet.  Tobias goes from “it’s a flying saucer” to “we find the yeerk pool, and when we do we blow it up and kill every one of those evil slugs” in about .03 seconds flat, and to some extent drags everyone else (especially Marco) into the war kicking and screaming.  Cassie’s more than a little starry-eyed at the idea of becoming a horse, and in some ways she’s almost as naive as Jake about where this war is going.  (Marco, by contrast, figures it out a lot faster: “You sure this is just the yeerk pool?… I see a guy with horns and a pitchfork and I’m outta here.”)

Given the immediacy and scale of the acute tension here—the planet is being taken over by parasitic aliens!—the chronic tension seems sort of silly.  Jake didn’t make the basketball team, boo-hoo.  However, he only wanted to make the basketball team so badly because he was hoping it would make Tom want to hang out with him again.  Because Tom’s been acting distant toward his whole family recently, to the point where Jake’s parents are mildly concerned.  Because Tom’s been wrapped up with this new organization, The Sharing.  Because The Sharing seems to have some really strange effects on its “full members”… Because the planet is being taken over by parasitic aliens.  I love the subtlety with which everything in Jake’s life comes around.  The war has already started reshaping his school, his town, his family, and his whole life, well before he starts turning into animals and killing aliens.  This book is scary, because not only is the invasion moving quickly but also because the Animorphs’ early attempts to fight back are like spitting on a forest fire.  Anyone could be a controller.  None of the other Animorphs know for sure about their own families until #49.  These kids can’t even ask their own families and friends for help.

As scary as this book is, it still has room for a lot of wonder.  Cassie compares them to ancient warriors tapping mystical animal spirits for help in protecting the Earth.  Tobias reacts like every one of us sci fi fans would to finding out that aliens exist.  Jake insists that there’s hope for the planet no matter what just as long as the andalites are out there.  Right from the moment the Animorphs lose their first battle, both on a personal scale (they don’t save Tom, and lose Tobias) and on a cosmic one (they find out that Visser Three is a lot better at morphing than they are) this series sends the message: buckle up, because it’s going to be a hell of a ride.  But as scary as it’s going to be, there’s still space for Marco’s awful driving, Cassie’s wondering fascination with dolphins and horses, Tobias’s crazy eagerness to embrace the bizarre, Rachel’s joyful exploration of her inner elephant, and Jake’s heartbreaking willingness to walk into hell in order to try and protect his big brother.

Mentally ill superheroes

Ok so I saw a post talking about how we should have more mentally ill superheroes and see mentally ill people as people and not plot devices. I agree, but consider this:

Obnoxious neurotypical villain invents mind control. The team of superheroes (or just regular people, they don’t have to have superpowers) who comes to stop him is full of people who’ve been battling mental illness for years, so they’re used to dealing with unwanted thoughts and feelings.
The villain sends the impulse for them to harm each other and the fear that they will act on it, and the person with OCD is like “nah”. The villain sends an overwhelming wave of depression, and the person with depression is like “ok but imma still kill you though”. The villain sends a wave of fear, and the person with anxiety is like “ok cool but you’re still gonna lose”. The villain sends hallucinations, and the person with schizophrenia is like “it’s ok guys I got this”. The villain sends a huge burst of energy and emotion (mania), and the person who is bipolar is like “is that all you got?”. The villain sends a flood of random, irrelevant thoughts to distract them, and the person with ADHD is like “whatever”. For everything the villain tries to throw at them, there’s someone who’s dealt with it before and can guide the team through. The villain then just hopes maybe he can keep up the fight long enough that they get tired, but these people are used to fighting a long and never-ending war. They don’t get tired, and if they do, they push through anyway because this is a battle they cannot afford to lose. And that is how they win.

(Feel free to add any mental illnesses I missed. Also someone should totally write this. I’d write it myself but I don’t know enough about most of these mental illnesses.)

Aaron Sorkin’s Letter To His Daughter After Trump’s Victory

Sorkin Girls,

Well the world changed late last night in a way I couldn’t protect us from. That’s a terrible feeling for a father. I won’t sugarcoat it—this is truly horrible. It’s hardly the first time my candidate didn’t win (in fact it’s the sixth time) but it is the first time that a thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn has.

And it wasn’t just Donald Trump who won last night—it was his supporters too. The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life (or are the reason for their way of life) have been given cause to celebrate. Men who have no right to call themselves that and who think that women who aspire to more than looking hot are shrill, ugly, and otherwise worthy of our scorn rather than our admiration struck a blow for misogynistic shitheads everywhere. Hate was given hope. Abject dumbness was glamorized as being “the fresh voice of an outsider” who’s going to “shake things up.” (Did anyone bother to ask how? Is he going to re-arrange the chairs in the Roosevelt Room?) For the next four years, the President of the United States, the same office held by Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R., J.F.K. and Barack Obama, will be held by a man-boy who’ll spend his hours exacting Twitter vengeance against all who criticize him (and those numbers will be legion). We’ve embarrassed ourselves in front of our children and the world.

And the world took no time to react. The Dow futures dropped 7,000 points overnight. Economists are predicting a deep and prolonged recession. Our NATO allies are in a state of legitimate fear. And speaking of fear, Muslim-Americans, Mexican-Americans and African-Americans are shaking in their shoes. And we’d be right to note that many of Donald Trump’s fans are not fans of Jews. On the other hand, there is a party going on at ISIS headquarters. What wouldn’t we give to trade this small fraction of a man for Richard Nixon right now?

So what do we do?

First of all, we remember that we’re not alone. A hundred million people in America and a billion more around the world feel exactly the same way we do.

Second, we get out of bed. The Trumpsters want to see people like us (Jewish, “coastal elites,” educated, socially progressive, Hollywood…) sobbing and wailing and talking about moving to Canada. I won’t give them that and neither will you. Here’s what we’ll do…

…we’ll fucking fight. (Roxy, there’s a time for this kind of language and it’s now.) We’re not powerless and we’re not voiceless. We don’t have majorities in the House or Senate but we do have representatives there. It’s also good to remember that most members of Trump’s own party feel exactly the same way about him that we do. We make sure that the people we sent to Washington—including Kamala Harris—take our strength with them and never take a day off.

We get involved. We do what we can to fight injustice anywhere we see it—whether it’s writing a check or rolling up our sleeves. Our family is fairly insulated from the effects of a Trump presidency so we fight for the families that aren’t. We fight for a woman to keep her right to choose. We fight for the First Amendment and we fight mostly for equality—not for a guarantee of equal outcomes but for equal opportunities. We stand up.

America didn’t stop being America last night and we didn’t stop being Americans and here’s the thing about Americans: Our darkest days have always—always—been followed by our finest hours.

Roxy, I know my predictions have let you down in the past, but personally, I don’t think this guy can make it a year without committing an impeachable crime. If he does manage to be a douche nozzle without breaking the law for four years, we’ll make it through those four years. And three years from now we’ll fight like hell for our candidate and we’ll win and they’ll lose and this time they’ll lose for good. Honey, it’ll be your first vote.

The battle isn’t over, it’s just begun. Grandpa fought in World War II and when he came home this country handed him an opportunity to make a great life for his family. I will not hand his granddaughter a country shaped by hateful and stupid men. Your tears last night woke me up, and I’ll never go to sleep on you again.

Which TWICE member should you fight?

Nayeon is old therefore her bones are weak. Actually she gets tired easily too. But she is feisty and may have the tendency to fight dirty. Yeah you could probably beat her, but even though you win the battle, she’ll insist she’ll win the war. Expect a lot of counter-attacks. Should you fight her? Sure, why not if you don’t mind being sucked into an endless back and forth.

Years of cleaning the dorm has instilled strength and discipline in Jeongyeon. The girl knows how to run too so escaping won’t be an option. Gets scary when mad. Are you sure you want to fight her? If you like losing, be my guest.

Pretty sure she works out, I mean look at her abs. Has strong muscle control from all the dancing. But you could probably lure and pacify her with food. Not really much of a fighter, very passive, will most likely not hurt you. Don’t fight her, what would you accomplish by doing so? Nothing, that’s what.

Very clumsy. Doesn’t seem like she can throw a punch either. But really scary when mad. Don’t think she’s kidding. Should you fight her? I mean, I guess if you really hate her. She takes make love not war to a whole new level though, so you might want to take that into consideration.

Why would you want to fight Jihyo? She has been nothing but an angel. Plus she’s God. You’ll never win. Don’t fight Jihyo.

Mina is one of those people you’d think is pretty weak but could probably take you out, albeit in a more ninja like way. She’s probably really light on her feet and can launch a surprise attack on you from behind at any given time. Don’t fight the penguin.

She’s squirmy and flexible so she’d probably escape your grasp over and over. Won’t really fight you but has a lot of energy and will probably wear you out before you can end her. Is really close to the Big Man upstairs. Do you really want to take the risk?

A smol bean but is not a cub for nothing. Will fight you even if she can’t beat you. Everyone in the group loves her though and will probably give you hell if you hurt her. If you don’t want eight girls ganging up on you, don’t fight Chaeyoung.

Has probably observed and judged you for some time, knows all your weaknesses. Might blackmail you into submission. Is also really rich and can sue you, your family and your cow. Not to mention a possible underground mafia at her disposal. Value your life. Value your cow. Don’t fight Tzuyu.

Gem with a nose pointy enough to rival Pearl’s, also known as “The hot one”

Only known for two episodes so far and already enough to do a decent enough analysis.

Jasper is a very proud gem and considered being an escort for Peridot’s mission to Earth beneath her. Meaning she’s somewhere past the working class in gem society.

She’s also a war veteran. In her monologue to Steven she mentioned being in the war for Earth, and respecting Rose’s battle tactics. She also seems to take pride in winning a fair fight. She was disgusted at the idea of fighting Garnet in the ship, telling her to stop doing such a shameful act. And when she loses against such a “shameful” tactic she’s livid.

She’s so livid that she’s willing to use the same tactic she called embarrassing and cheap. And in her attempts to win against her newfound foes, her fusion partner, Lapis Lazuli, turns on her and literally drags her into the ocean.

She’s an interesting character that I can’t wait to see again.

Hang in there Jasper.

Rhaegar supports his father's actions. He leads the loyalists to war against Lyanna's remaining family. Ned dies in battle and so sad too bad?

And that’s why Lyanna is the ultimate loser in basically every Robert’s Rebellion AU situation.

1) Rhaegar lives and wins? Then he’s killed Robert and must punish the rebelling houses, including the Starks
2) Rhaegar dies but Lyanna lives? Then Lyanna might have to marry Robert. Or maybe not, but she’s still lost her brother and father and certainly cannot call her son her son.
3) The knights win at the ToJ? Then that means Ned has died and Lyanna loses another brother before she ultimately dies too
4) Ned dies at the Trident? Then the only person who can negotiate or refuse Robert her hand in marriage is dead too, and she must marry Robert
5) Rhaegar wins and Lyanna lives? She definitely is not going to marry Rhaegar regardless of what Rhaegar wants, would most likely be sent home with Jon remaining in King’s Landing + a punishment for the rebelling houses

The only good AU is 6) Rhaegar dies, Robert dies, Elia + the children live, Elia and Lyanna co-queen Westeros into a golden age, everyone is happy, nothing hurts

Quick Note on Devos’ Confirmation:

Everyone who called.  Everyone who reblogged Congress’s numbers.  Everyone who visited offices.  Everyone who rallied to fight her: you did an an amazing job.

We didn’t win.  And it’s hard.  But we have to keep fighting, and we have to focus on some small victories:

We put enough pressure on the GOP that two of their Senators (Collins-Maine, Murkowski-Alaska) voted NO.  Believe me, if they hadn’t gotten thousands of calls from you, from their constituents they never would’ve voted No.  This is a victory, because it means if we can keep the pressure up, we can CONSTANTLY REMIND THEM they are up for re-election and we have the power to vote them out of office.  They will start singing different tunes, if they think their current song won’t get them elected again.

This is a war; we’ll lose battles.  We need to win the war.  George Washington lost more battles than he won, but he still won.

Jeff Sessions is Next.

Scott Puritt is Next.

Gorsuch for SCOTUS is Next.

2018 Elections are Next.

Keep fighting.

Go to your school board meetings.

Get involved in your local councils and town boards.

But keep fighting.

best of greys - winning a battle, losing the war
I’ve been wondering to myself, why are you so hell bent on getting me to go out with you? You know you’re my boss, you know it’s against the rules, you know I keep saying no. It’s the chase.
