You sighed as you flicked over the page, only ten more pages to go.
“Well if it isn’t our favourite Ravenclaw.” You heard a familiar voice say as you lifted your head up.
“Fred and George, in the library?” You teased as they sat down at your empty table. There was only one other person in the library and they were sat on the other side of the room,.
“Well, it is the only place to find you.” George shrugged, placing his elbows on the table and resting his head in his hands.
“Yeah, what book are you reading?” Fred asked, picking the book out of your hands and looking at the cover. You chuckled and shook your head, trust them to come and disrupt your reading. But it was okay, they had been doing this for the past five years, you were used to it now. You had been friends with the twins since your second year at Hogwarts, which was quite surprising considering you were very different people. The twins were out there, they were loud and energetic, whereas you were quiet and much preferred to spend your time in the library, reading. You took the book out of Fred’s hands and found the page you were up to.
“So, what brings you two to the library?” You asked, bookmarking your page and putting it aside.
“We just wanted to remind you-” George started.
“That Gryffindor is versing Ravenclaw next Saturday,” Fred continued.
“And Ravenclaw is going to lose.” George whisper shouted. Another factor that made your friendship unlikely was the fact that you were in two different houses. You were a proud Ravenclaw, while they were proud Gryffindors. You hummed in response, trying to contain your smile. It was unknown to the twins that a few weeks ago you had tried out for the new chaser position on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. You had always loved Quidditch and you decided to try out, it was a good way to show house pride and have fun. However, you didn’t really want to tell anyone about this because you would be quite embarrassed if you didn’t get the position.
“Are you ready for them to lose?” Fred asked, placing an elbow on the table and leaning his face against it to look in your direction.
“Please, Ravenclaw could beat Gryffindor in their sleep.” You teased raising an eyebrow in a threatening way.
“Yeah, okay, sure,” Fred said sarcastically rolling his eyes playfully.
“Well, maybe if their new chaser is better than the old one,” George said, laughing to himself.
“Ravenclaw is getting a new chaser?” You asked, acting dumb. You didn’t want them to find out at all.
“Yeah, their old one was shit.” George laughed and you tried to stop your smile. It was true, your last chaser was not good at all and it was the best decision your captain had made to get a new chaser.
“I wonder who it will be,” Fred said as the twins thought about it.
“Do you know?” George asked.
“Yeah, tell us so we know who we are up against.” Fred smiled as you playfully rolled your eyes at them.
“I didn’t even know they were getting a new chaser.” You exclaimed, trying hard not to show you were lying.
“Well, whoever it is better be good,” Fred said.
“Yeah, they need to be better than Gryffindor.” George continued.
“And that is not easy.” Fred finished as he moved his elbow from the table to slouch in his chair.
“Whatever.” You scoffed, biting your lip to prevent yourself from saying anything else.
“Want to go get some lunch?” George asked, also removing his elbows from the table.
“Sure.” You shrugged packing your book away as the three of you stood up and walked into the Great Hall. Giggling and talking as you went along. You couldn’t help but hope that you got the chaser position just so you could see the look on their faces when they saw it was you.
The next day you were sitting in the library again, you had started a new book and you were already three-quarters through it. Today there was a few more people in the library and you could hear their faint talking.
“So,” you heard a familiar voice say
“We heard Ravenclaw picked their new chaser.” Another voice continued.
“Did they?” You asked, putting your book down.
“They did,” Fred said as they sat on opposite sides of you.
“Who is it?” You asked, raising an eyebrow.
“We don’t know,” George said.
“That’s why we came to find you.” Fred winked as you shook your head.
“Sorry to say guys, but I don’t know who it is.” That was the biggest lie you had ever told. Of course, you knew who the new Ravenclaw chaser was, it was you. You were ecstatic that you got the position, but you weren’t planning on telling anyone. You wanted it to be a surprise and the captain wanted to keep you a secret until the game to try to put Gryffindor off their game.
“How do you not know?” Fred exclaimed earning a ‘Shh’ from Madame Pince. You shrugged not really knowing what to say.
“I mean I know you’re not into Quidditch all that much, but still?” George asked and you tried desperately hard to keep your mouth shut. No one really knew how much of a Quidditch fanatic you were. When people thought of you, they thought of books and libraries and studying, no one ever thought of Quidditch. This was also why the captain wanted to keep you a secret. No one would ever expect it to be you, no one knew about your love for Quidditch and how good you actually were at it. This would make Gryffindor stunned at the game and they would think you weren’t any good when in actual fact, you were one of the best players on the team. Ravenclaw Captain’s words, not yours.
“Well anyways, whoever it is, they better be bloody brilliant.” Fred sighed as George agreed.
“Gryffindor has the best team, they better be ready for some hard competition,” George added.
“Well, we will see you tomorrow when Ravenclaw loses.” Fred stuck his tongue out at you and you stuck yours out back.
“Bye losers.” You smiled picking your book back up and continuing to read.
It was the day of the match and you knew you shouldn’t be, but you were freaking out. You knew the twins were just joking around, but you felt the need to win, to prove them wrong. If Ravenclaw didn’t win then it would be pretty embarrassing and you knew it would be your fault if they lost. You were at the Great Hall eating breakfast by yourself when the twins came over.
“So we heard a rumor about the new chaser.” George teased as they stood on either side of you and bent down to your height.
“Yeah?” You asked trying to play it cool and continue eating. You hoped they had been given the wrong information and were still clueless to the fact that it was you.
“Apparently, it is Edwards,” Fred smirked, talking about a boy in the year above you.
“Is it now?” You asked, you tried to stop yourself from smiling, but it came through anyway.
“Yeah, which is great because he sucks!” George exclaimed as you rolled your eyes. Lucky Edwards didn’t hear them over the loud chattering of the rest of the students.
“Why do you look so nervous?” Fred asked, placing a hand on your shoulder. You didn’t know what to say and instantly shrugged your shoulders.
“Poor thing, she is worried about Ravenclaw losing.” George fake pouted and you gave a sarcastic laugh.
“Well anyway, hope to see you in the crowd when Ravenclaw loose,” Fred said as they walked away. You nodded at his statement, but it only made the nerves worse.
As you got dressed and ready for the big game you got a lot of ‘good lucks’ from your team mates. You thanked them with a small smile, convinced you were going to throw up if you actually said something. You took a few deep breaths and gave yourself a quick pep talk, as Lee Jordan started commentating.
“Ravenclaw will be coming out first today, showing off their new chaser for the first time. They have kept this new position a secret and we are all dying to know who it is.” Lee said and you were sure your knees were going to go weak as you walked onto the pitch. The crowd cheered as you all walked out.
“You got this.” The captain mouthed at you and you nodded. You did have this.
“And I don’t believe it. Wait until Gryffindor find out who the new chaser is.” Lee exclaimed. You smiled to yourself, at least you were going to get to see the twins expressions when they saw you were the new chaser.
As Gryffindor walked out you saw all of their heads immediately look over at the Ravenclaw team, trying to spot the new chaser. However, you were hidden behind all of the taller players who stood in front of you. As everyone moved out to their positions you looked over to the Gryffindor team. All of them were shocked and you couldn’t help but smirk. You looked over at Fred and George who had a look of confusion on their face. You smiled at them and waved, maybe your captain was right and you being chaser would put them off their game.
Everyone’s shocked reactions only made you want to win more and fueled a fire that made you determined to win this game. Madame Hooch blew the whistle and everyone flew up.
“And there goes Y/L/N with the quaffle, and she dodges and she scores again! The new chaser is definitely making a good first impression.” You heard Lee say as Ravenclaw cheered. The score was currently 190-30 with Ravenclaw winning. You had scored about seventy percent of those goals and you were proud of yourself. You were proving most people wrong and putting them into a further state of shock. It is a wonderful feeling when people don’t think you can do it and you prove them wrong. Which is what you were doing right now.
“And it looks like Potter has got the snitch and he has caught it! The game has ended with a score of 190-180 with a win to Ravenclaw. And I think they can thank their new chaser for that.” You heard Lee say as the crowd cheered. Everyone got off their brooms and the rest of the team congratulated you. As you were going to thank the Gryffindor team you felt an arm wrap around your shoulders.
“‘I don’t know Ravenclaw is trying for a new chaser’, she says, ‘I don’t know who the knew chaser is’, she says.” You heard Fred say as he mimicked your voice.
“Hey, I sound nothing like that.” You defended smiling up at him.
“Why didn’t you tell us you were the new chaser?” George asked as he stood on the opposite side of you.
“I wanted to keep it a surprise.” You explained, shrugging your shoulders slightly.
“Well, you sure surprised us, and the whole school.” Fred chuckled as you nodded.
“That was the plan.”
“Who knew you were so good at Quidditch.” George shook his head.
“Why didn’t you tell us you were so good?” Fred asked.
“I don’t know, it never came up.” You finished the sentence as more of a question than a statement.
“Well, you were the best player on the team.” George said, “I’m proud of you.”
“Thanks.” You said laughing.
“You are the best player in school,” Fred exclaimed making the three of you chuckle.
“Well, I need to go and get changed, see you around.” You got out of Fred’s grip and smiled and waved as you walked away.
As you got dressed you took a big sigh. You were proud of yourself, you had done an amazing job and Ravenclaw beat Gryffindor. Now you could tease the twins about them having the losing house.
The next day you were in the library, doing some studying. It was late at night and there was no one else in the library. It was quite dark and you needed a lamp to see what you were doing
“Here is the best chaser in the school.” You looked up and put your quill down as Fred came and sat next to you.
“Where is George?” You asked smiling at him. He shrugged his shoulders as he sat next to you. Fred had been acting quite strange ever since the Quidditch match. Both him and George had been congratulating you all week, which was nice of them, but Fred seemed to do it more often. He was always with you and always talking about how great you were. He kept stuttering and fumbling over his words which you thought was strange.
“Not sure.” He replied as you nodded slowly. Over the years, a few people have thought that either Fred or George had a crush on you, no one really knew which was which and therefore didn’t know who. But you never believed it, you guys were only friends. And plus, you had never thought about them in a romantic way, and you didn’t think you ever could.
“So what brings you to the library?” You asked leaning back in your chair.
“Just thought I would come say ‘hi’.” He smiled sitting up and leaning his elbow on the table to rest his head in his hand.
“Hi.” You giggled as he smiled.
“You know, you truly were amazing on that broom, I never thought you would be that good.” He said.
“Thank you, I think.” You giggled and he smiled.
“Shouldn’t you be in bed?” You asked, poking his shoulder and he shrugged.
“Shouldn’t you?” He raised an eyebrow at you and you shook your head.
“So what homework are you doing?” He asked, leaning over to see what you were doing.
“Potions.” You sat up in your chair as Fred looked at your work.
“Oh, that question was hard.” He pointed to the question you had just finished writing.
“Well maybe if you listened in class, you would know.” You teased, the answer was easy to write when you went off the notes you took in class. Fred breathed out.
“See your, good at Quidditch, you’re smart, you’re beautiful, is there something bad about you?” He asked leaning into you. You smiled, not really knowing what to say. He kept leaning in, but you didn’t want to move away and seem rude. But before you could stop anything, his lips were on yours and he was kissing you. You didn’t know what to do and softly kissed back.
“I-uh, I gotta go.” You whispered as soon as he pulled away. You got all of your stuff and ran out of the library. What just happened? It was a good kiss, you weren’t going to lie. And yes you did feel bad about leaving Fred like that. But you just weren’t interested in him like that and you were taken off guard and needed to get out of there as soon as you could.
A few months later, Ron and Harry catch her kissing Dean; Ron comes dangerously close to calling her a slut. Ginny lays into him; she is merciless, ripping into Ron about his own lack of experience. She accuses him, “Been kissing Pigwidgeon, have you? Or have you got a picture of Aunt Muriel stashed under your pillow?” 46 It is very clear that Ginny is more than willing to use humour as a deadly part of her arsenal when she is angry.
It should be noted, however, that this aspect of Ginny’s personality is actually very similar to Harry’s own behaviour. Harry has always used his sense of humour against those with whom he is angry with or does not like.
The most obvious example is Dudley. In the first book, before Harry learns of Hogwarts, Dudley teases him about the local comprehensive. “˜They stuff people’s heads down the toilet first day at Stonewall,’ he told Harry. ˜ Want to come upstairs to practise?’ ˜No thanks,’ said Harry. ˜The poor toilet’s never had anything as horrible as your head down it - it might be sick.’ ” 47 A few years later, when Dudley claims he had the right to beat up a ten-year-old because he cheeked Dudley, Harry replies, “Yeah? Did he say you look like a pig that’s been taught to walk on its hind legs? ˜Cause that’s not cheek, Dud, that’s true.” 48 Unable to use magic during the summer, Harry easily resorts to his oldest survival mechanism to deal with the enormous bully Dudley.
In fact, Harry’s reliance on humour has become so instinctive by the sixth book, he does not even think before he uses it. During his first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, Harry and Snape have the following exchange:
“Do you remember me telling you we are practising non-verbal spells, Potter?”
“Yes’ said Harry stiffly.
“There’s no need to call me ˜sir’, Professor.”
The words had escaped him before he knew what he was saying. Several people gasped, including Hermione. Behind Snape, however, Ron, Dean, and Seamus grinned appreciatively.49
When angered, Harry turns to the device that has served him so well all his life, even when it is not necessarily in his best interests and earns him detention.
Harry is not shy about using his wit in fights with his closest friends. When Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, he and Ron stop speaking for a time, largely due to Ron’s jealousy. One night they have a fight; Harry throws a ˜Potter Really Stinks’ badge at Ron’s head and sarcastically quips, “There you go. … Something for you to wear on Tuesday. You might even have a scar now, if you’re lucky. […] That’s what you want, isn’t it?” 50 Ron’s insecurity about his place in the world has caught up with him. Ron is angry because he worries he is only the sidekick, never having any attention for himself. Recognition is something for which Ron yearns. Harry knows this; Hermione has tried to explain it to him. However, he is not afraid to use biting sarcasm to throw that insecurity back in Ron’s face when Harry becomes angry.
The way Harry and Ginny both use their humour as a weapon make them evenly matched. They both have the same dark, dry wit and are not afraid to use it when it suits them. Ginny’s possible fault in no way makes her unworthy of Harry; it is a behaviour pattern they share.
It is likely they could turn this weapon on each other; every couple fights eventually. It may work out, however, that they would be less hurt by a defense mechanism they both use and understand. In addition, their rather mature emotional honesty to date indicates they would survive any squabbles fairly well.
