Johanna’s Top Anime of 2016
#3 - Mob Psycho 100

Goddamn, Mob Psycho 100 is an amazing looking show. The sheer diversity of visuals ranging from Dezaki influenced postcard memories, to Miyo Sato’s brilliant oil paint on glass animation, to the stylish effects work from web-gen animators, meant that every episode of MP100 brought something new and exciting to the table. For as much as I enjoyed the animation of 2015′s One Punch Man, I thought MP100 was an even better looking and more impressive show. The decision to hew closely to ONE’s original, unpolished designs meant that Yuzuru Tachikawa, Yoshimichi Kameda, and company could really lean into and enhance the weirdness of the source material.

The story, character relationships, and the mere existence of Reigen in MP100 are good enough that it would have been a watchable series without the outstanding art and animation. However, every year I like to watch at least one anime that excels at visual spectacle, something that justifies the fact that I continue to watch cartoons well into adulthood. Mob Psycho 100 fulfilled that need and so much more in 2016.
