Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up. - Stephen Hawking
“One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.”
I think the simplest, most powerful thing you can do in your walk as a believer is to look up. Whatever the circumstances, wherever you are, the simple act of choosing to look up at Jesus instead of around you will empower you and carry you through any situation you may be facing. But what does it mean to look to Jesus? Looking to Jesus, fixing our eyes on him (Hebrews 12:12), is choosing to lean on him. Think of it as selecting your source of help. When we are faced with a problem, we search for the solution hoping that the source we go to for help will have the answer that will solve the problem and give us an answer. Wherever we go or whoever we turn to for help decides whether or not we end up solving the problem or not. When we make the active decision to look up, when our first response when faced with a situation we cannot handle ourselves is to look up at Jesus and not around us, we’re selecting him as our source of help, and he is the one source in the world, the only source in the world who never ever disappoints.
Do you have a broken heart? If you are hurting today, where are you looking for comfort? Don’t lean on the things of the world, don’t search for love from people who cannot provide it, or don’t want to provide it. God is love. Go to the source.
Feel like your life is in ruins? Stop looking for solutions in the world. Your solution isn’t found in the world. You won’t find it in the casinos, you won’t find it in alcohol, drugs, pornography, or cigarettes, you won’t find it chasing after the things of the world - more money, more power, more fame, more friends, more worldly comforts - none of these things hold the answer to your problem. Is there even an answer? I’m here to tell you that whatever mess you’re in, Jesus is the answer.
Make Jesus the person you turn to when you need an answer to anything. He is the only source that will never disappoint, that will always come through for you. So look up. Tell your problems, “I’m done focusing on you”, and refocus your eyes, fix them on Jesus, and He will give you whatever you need. :)
