do you remember how you felt when you first played breath of the wild? ngl as soon as my screen said "nintendo presents the legend of zelda breath of the wild" i started crying lol
Let me tell you the story, anon.
I worked the day of the release and went to the midnight release, arriving home at about 1am. I set everything up, popped in BOTW and, alone in my living room surrounded by darkness, started up the game.
I knew there was something special about BOTW by the quiet way it opens, and that beautiful visual of the golden light as Zelda wakes Link up. But the real magic came at about 4am when I was first heading towards the Duelling Peaks and got caught in my first thunderstorm.
I unequipped all my gear as I knew I should, but was stuck in Gatepost Town and was too afraid to move on to find shelter. So I just had Link crouch by some ruins to wait out the storm as all around the ground was shaking and trees were getting blown to bits by lightning strikes. I was already pretty terrified (I have a lowkey fear of lightning) but then I panned the camera around and saw in the south – this enormous green, glowing dragon just silently flying through the air.
I wish I could adequately describe it. I’d never felt smaller or more helpless in a game before, and it hit me just how huge the world in BOTW is, and how strongly the odds are stacked against Link at first. If I felt like this scared after a pithy thunderstorm, how tf was I gonna defeat Ganon? I almost wanted to stop playing because it was so overwhelming, but by fuck it was one of the realest experiences I’ve had in a videogame.
